The <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course - True Links
Introduction<br />
The purpose of this booklet is to present <strong>the</strong> adjustments to <strong>the</strong> famed<br />
<strong>Dunluce</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Courses</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong>. The reason <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
adjustments is twofold - To increase <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> links <strong>for</strong> regular<br />
member <strong>and</strong> visitor play <strong>and</strong> to provide courses which would make it<br />
feasible <strong>for</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong> to host <strong>the</strong> 148th Open. However, <strong>the</strong> overriding<br />
principle would be to ensure th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>and</strong> visitors enjoy <strong>the</strong><br />
courses even more than now.<br />
As part of this course review exercise, investig<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> evolution of golf<br />
<strong>at</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong> has been undertaken to assess how <strong>the</strong> layout has changed<br />
over <strong>the</strong> years <strong>and</strong> especially since Harry Colt laid out his final design <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course in 1932. Th<strong>at</strong> has highlighted a fundamental issue.<br />
When Harry Colt designed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> in 1932, <strong>the</strong> clubhouse was over<br />
1,200 yards away from <strong>the</strong> present clubhouse in <strong>the</strong> town of <strong>Portrush</strong>. Two<br />
of his original holes - <strong>the</strong> key 1st & 18th holes - are now lost. They provided<br />
a link from <strong>the</strong> old clubhouse to <strong>the</strong> current 17th <strong>and</strong> 18th. The existing 8th<br />
<strong>and</strong> 9th holes did not exist. Although Harry Colt was consulted over <strong>the</strong><br />
addition of <strong>the</strong> replacement 8th <strong>and</strong> 9th holes, <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong> conception<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Club’s professional, P.G. Stevenson, <strong>and</strong> Colt was not involved with<br />
<strong>the</strong> detail of <strong>the</strong> holes. This shows th<strong>at</strong> Harry Colt was open to adjustments<br />
to <strong>the</strong> course required by changing circumstances.<br />
Would Harry Colt advoc<strong>at</strong>e such a change if he were alive today? We<br />
believe th<strong>at</strong> he certainly would. Not just because <strong>the</strong> prize of The Open<br />
awaits but also due to <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> it will streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> layout. He would<br />
always look <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> best l<strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> his designs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> new holes will occupy<br />
<strong>the</strong> strongest l<strong>and</strong> imaginable.<br />
Will such a change lead to more enjoyment of <strong>the</strong> members <strong>and</strong> visitors<br />
through an increase in quality of <strong>the</strong> course? There is little doubt th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
two new holes will be far superior in n<strong>at</strong>ural character compared with <strong>the</strong><br />
existing 17th <strong>and</strong> 18th holes. Th<strong>at</strong>, on its own, would lead to <strong>the</strong> course<br />
receiving even gre<strong>at</strong>er plaudits than it does now <strong>and</strong> gener<strong>at</strong>e more<br />
enjoyment in <strong>the</strong> play of <strong>the</strong> course <strong>for</strong> all golfers.<br />

The Current<br />
Clubhouse<br />
The Club is now <strong>at</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r juncture of its evolution with <strong>the</strong> opportunities<br />
presented by <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong> 148th Open coming to <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong>. The<br />
Championship has grown in scale tremendously since Max Faulkner lifted<br />
<strong>the</strong> Claret Jug when <strong>the</strong> event was held over <strong>the</strong> links in 1951. The R&A has<br />
been clear from <strong>the</strong> outset of <strong>the</strong> negoti<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> return of The Open<br />
th<strong>at</strong> sufficient room has to be available in <strong>the</strong> right areas to allow all of<br />
<strong>the</strong> usual infrastructure to be put in place to support <strong>the</strong> Championship.<br />
Following an intensive study of all options, <strong>the</strong> inescapable conclusion was<br />
drawn th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> existing 17th <strong>and</strong> 18th holes of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course would<br />
have to be made available <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> majority of <strong>the</strong> spect<strong>at</strong>or village area.<br />
Following a detailed study of <strong>the</strong> opportunities to replace <strong>the</strong> 17th<br />
<strong>and</strong> 18th holes, <strong>the</strong> conclusion was th<strong>at</strong> two replacement holes <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Dunluce</strong> could be <strong>for</strong>ged from <strong>the</strong> area of <strong>the</strong> 5th <strong>and</strong> 6th holes of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Valley</strong> Course. This is a tremendous arena <strong>for</strong> two dram<strong>at</strong>ic <strong>and</strong> iconic<br />
holes which should quickly achieve world fame. Th<strong>at</strong> led to two questions.<br />

The Two New Holes<br />
If <strong>the</strong>re has been a criticism of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course over <strong>the</strong> years, it has been<br />
th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> 17th <strong>and</strong> 18th holes are slightly weak after such an amazing tour of <strong>the</strong><br />
dunes over <strong>the</strong> first 16 holes.<br />
This will be addressed by cre<strong>at</strong>ing two new holes th<strong>at</strong> will continue to improve<br />
Colt’s finest links. The dunescape which <strong>the</strong>y will occupy is second to none,<br />
giving rise to two holes which will be more in-keeping with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r 16 holes<br />
on <strong>the</strong> course.<br />
Firstly, a new par 5 hole will play down into <strong>the</strong> valley, over <strong>the</strong> route of <strong>the</strong><br />
existing 6th hole of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course <strong>and</strong> rising gently up to a new green,<br />
hugging <strong>the</strong> enormous dunes to its right. ‘Big Nellie’ from <strong>the</strong> existing 17th<br />
hole will be recre<strong>at</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> right of this new hole. This will fit very well into <strong>the</strong><br />
huge dune bank.<br />
Secondly, a new par 4 hole has <strong>the</strong> potential to become one of <strong>the</strong> most dram<strong>at</strong>ic<br />
in championship golf <strong>and</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> main fe<strong>at</strong>ure holes of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course.<br />
From a tee position close to <strong>the</strong> existing 5th tee on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>, <strong>the</strong> golfer will<br />
face a dem<strong>and</strong>ing drive played across <strong>the</strong> chasm of <strong>the</strong> valley between tee <strong>and</strong><br />
fairway to a green close to <strong>the</strong> existing 8th green.<br />
The two holes fit in perfectly between <strong>the</strong> existing 6th <strong>and</strong> 7th holes <strong>and</strong> make<br />
up <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> considerable loss of length from <strong>the</strong> removal of <strong>the</strong> existing 17th <strong>and</strong><br />
18th holes. These holes may also be played between <strong>the</strong> 13th <strong>and</strong> 14th holes<br />
instead <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> is something which <strong>the</strong> Club may opt <strong>for</strong> but, <strong>for</strong> The Open,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y will be <strong>the</strong> 7th <strong>and</strong> 8th holes.<br />
These holes have <strong>the</strong> potential to become not only famous but iconic<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> world of golf.<br />

The Existing <strong>Dunluce</strong> Holes<br />
Along with <strong>the</strong> two new holes which have been designed, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sixteen holes<br />
of <strong>the</strong> course have been reviewed to assess where appropri<strong>at</strong>e adjustment would be<br />
merited. This has been carried out in conjunction with officers of <strong>the</strong> Club <strong>and</strong> The<br />
R&A.<br />
However, any improvements proposed have to bear in mind <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> course is<br />
used as a priv<strong>at</strong>e members’ facility <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> vast majority of its life. Hence any changes<br />
must not compromise <strong>the</strong> enjoyment of <strong>the</strong> members. A few back tees are proposed<br />
which will not be used by <strong>the</strong> members <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> addition of bunkers or adjustment of<br />
<strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong><strong>for</strong>m proposed will, on <strong>the</strong> whole, affect <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ing areas of <strong>the</strong> elite players<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>icap golfers.<br />
It is interesting to note th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are no suggestions to change any of <strong>the</strong> par 3 holes<br />
on <strong>the</strong> course o<strong>the</strong>r than adding a back tee <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> famous Calamity. Without exception<br />
<strong>the</strong>y have all withstood <strong>the</strong> test of time. However, adjustments will be made to every<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r hole although a number of <strong>the</strong>m are rel<strong>at</strong>ively minor in n<strong>at</strong>ure.<br />
In terms of leng<strong>the</strong>ning <strong>the</strong> holes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> course, <strong>the</strong>re was no target set <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
overall length of <strong>the</strong> layout. Instead each hole has been considered on an individual<br />
basis <strong>and</strong> to ensure an even balance of lengths of holes throughout <strong>the</strong> course. Th<strong>at</strong><br />
has led to an overall length of 7,337 yards - An increase of just under 200 yards from<br />
<strong>the</strong> existing 7,143 yards.<br />
The quality of <strong>the</strong> contouring of <strong>the</strong> greens <strong>and</strong> surrounds on <strong>the</strong> course is <strong>the</strong><br />
element which fundamentally defines <strong>the</strong> skills of Harry Colt <strong>and</strong> his construction<br />
team. There are some wonderful shapes to admire. There is fur<strong>the</strong>r evidence of this<br />
by a comparison of <strong>the</strong> true ‘Colt’ greens with <strong>the</strong> surfaces of <strong>the</strong> existing 8th <strong>and</strong> 9th<br />
which did not benefit from his <strong>at</strong>tention to detail as <strong>the</strong>y were added l<strong>at</strong>er. There is<br />
a marked difference in <strong>the</strong>ir shapes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y blend into <strong>the</strong>ir surroundings<br />
although <strong>the</strong> 9th sits better in <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape than <strong>the</strong> 8th. Hence <strong>the</strong> proposal to make<br />
minor adjustments to <strong>the</strong> shape of <strong>the</strong> existing 8th green (proposed 10th) to turn it<br />
into a green of which Mr Colt would approve.<br />
As with <strong>the</strong> proposals <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> two replacement holes, any adjustments to <strong>the</strong> existing<br />
holes will pay respect to <strong>the</strong> original design philosophy of Harry Colt. He made very<br />
sparing use of bunkers <strong>at</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong>. The n<strong>at</strong>ure of terrain <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> penalty of <strong>the</strong> rough<br />
would have rendered over reliance on bunkers unnecessary. There is little doubt th<strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard of play has increased over <strong>the</strong> years which has led to proposals which<br />
result in <strong>the</strong> overall number of bunkers increasing but only by 3 from 59 to 62. Th<strong>at</strong><br />
would be far lower than any o<strong>the</strong>r Open venue. Turnberry is <strong>the</strong> closest having 81<br />
bunkers with <strong>the</strong> majority of <strong>the</strong> venues having around 100, Muirfield more than 150<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> Lytham & St Annes relying on as many as 203 <strong>the</strong> last time The Open was<br />
held <strong>the</strong>re!<br />
Par 5 holes generally require <strong>at</strong>tention to ensure th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y still ask <strong>the</strong> right questions<br />
of <strong>the</strong> best players. Th<strong>at</strong> has proved to be <strong>the</strong> case <strong>at</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong>. The most<br />
dram<strong>at</strong>ic of <strong>the</strong> proposals is to leng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> 2nd hole by pushing <strong>the</strong> green fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
back. Th<strong>at</strong> seems to be a n<strong>at</strong>ural opportunity to implement although <strong>the</strong> hole will still<br />
be reachable with two well struck shots. The existing 9th hole (proposed 11th) has<br />
been played as a par 5 in <strong>the</strong> past but, <strong>at</strong> less than 480 yards, it would be played as<br />
a par 4 <strong>for</strong> The Open. The existing 10th hole (proposed 12th) will be leng<strong>the</strong>ned just<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> elite players with tees to <strong>the</strong> left of <strong>the</strong> preceding green. The existing 17th has<br />
been replaced with <strong>the</strong> new 7th hole <strong>and</strong> this includes <strong>the</strong> recre<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> fearsome<br />
‘Big Nellie’ bunker.<br />

<strong>Dunluce</strong> Links
The <strong>Valley</strong> Course<br />
The first thing to say is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> is a tremendous links course in its own<br />
right. The use of <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> containing <strong>the</strong> 5th <strong>and</strong> 6th holes on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course<br />
<strong>for</strong> two new holes on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course clearly means th<strong>at</strong> a reconfigur<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> is required unless <strong>the</strong> members were to choose to return to <strong>the</strong><br />
existing 17th <strong>and</strong> 18th holes <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course between Opens. If not,<br />
<strong>the</strong> possibility of adding <strong>the</strong> 17th <strong>and</strong> 18th holes of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong><br />
Course has been assessed but discarded <strong>for</strong> two main reasons. The character<br />
of <strong>the</strong> holes would not fit in with <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> use of<br />
this area during an Open would lead to <strong>the</strong>se two holes, along with <strong>the</strong> 2nd<br />
hole, being taken out of play <strong>for</strong> a long period. Hence <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> would be left<br />
as a 15 hole course during <strong>the</strong> year of an Open. As a result, a solution has been<br />
provided which will c<strong>at</strong>er <strong>for</strong> all scenarios. The changes will streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Valley</strong> Course with <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion or restor<strong>at</strong>ion of four holes to <strong>the</strong> layout.<br />
The <strong>Valley</strong> Course changes are described in more detail l<strong>at</strong>er in <strong>the</strong> booklet<br />
but <strong>the</strong>y involve:-<br />
1. playing a dram<strong>at</strong>ic new par 3 (<strong>the</strong> proposed 15th) after <strong>the</strong> existing 16th hole.<br />
2. extending <strong>the</strong> 17th (<strong>the</strong> proposed 16th) to a dogleg par 5.<br />
3. restoring one of <strong>the</strong> historic <strong>Portrush</strong> holes (<strong>the</strong> proposed 17th) from tees<br />
which have fallen obsolete to <strong>the</strong> left of <strong>the</strong> existing 17th green to one of <strong>the</strong><br />
Skerries Course greens. This was an original green <strong>at</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong>.<br />
4. playing a new short par 4 18th hole from a stunning tee loc<strong>at</strong>ion on <strong>the</strong><br />
dunes with views of <strong>the</strong> beach, sea <strong>and</strong> town to a green close to <strong>the</strong> 1st tee on<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course.<br />
The existing 18th hole on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> will be retained <strong>for</strong> use during build<br />
<strong>and</strong> restitution periods <strong>for</strong> The Open. It will be played after <strong>the</strong> existing 17th<br />
(proposed 16th), followed by a par 3 from a temporary tee to <strong>the</strong> proposed<br />
17th green to make up <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> temporary loss of <strong>the</strong> 2nd hole.<br />
All four new or adjusted holes <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> will be extremely high in quality<br />
of scenic views <strong>and</strong> golfing character. Th<strong>at</strong> is why it is justified to say th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />
will streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course overall.<br />
The proposed 17th hole on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course would restore one of <strong>the</strong> original <strong>Portrush</strong> greens

Martin Ebert has been <strong>the</strong> partner in charge of <strong>the</strong> work <strong>and</strong> this followed <strong>the</strong> input<br />
which he made with Donald Steel from 2001 until 2005.<br />
In th<strong>at</strong> time <strong>the</strong> projects which have been undertaken <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Club have included <strong>the</strong><br />
improvement of <strong>the</strong> practice ground, <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> short game practice area, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Royal</strong> St. George’s, <strong>Royal</strong> Lytham & St Annes, <strong>Royal</strong> Troon <strong>and</strong> Carnoustie have to<br />
present an enjoyable experience <strong>for</strong> members <strong>and</strong> visitors as well as <strong>the</strong> supreme test<br />
of <strong>the</strong> world’s best players. Striking <strong>the</strong> right balance is <strong>the</strong> key as well as paying due<br />
respect to <strong>the</strong> wonderful heritage of <strong>the</strong>se courses.<br />
Those same skills learned from working on so many classic championship courses<br />
have been brought to bear on <strong>the</strong> planning <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjustments to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course<br />
which will enable it to once again host The Open. This has involved working with <strong>the</strong><br />

Hole Description<br />
In general uphill holes are not amongst <strong>the</strong> finest on a course but <strong>the</strong> opening hole <strong>at</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong>, which<br />
rises some 20 feet from tee to green, is an exception. First of all, <strong>the</strong> tee shot must avoid out of bounds to<br />
<strong>the</strong> right. Th<strong>at</strong> should not trouble <strong>the</strong> world’s best players so a bunker is proposed to tighten <strong>the</strong> hole on <strong>the</strong><br />
fairway’s right h<strong>and</strong> side <strong>at</strong> a distance which will tighten <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ing area <strong>for</strong> tee shots played with an iron or<br />
rescue club in still or downwind conditions which is <strong>the</strong> normal str<strong>at</strong>egy <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> best players. The reason th<strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> hole is such a good one lies almost entirely with <strong>the</strong> character of <strong>the</strong> green which Harry Colt designed. The<br />
shapes are wonderful, dividing <strong>the</strong> surface into quadrants <strong>for</strong> flag positions. The front two spots are <strong>the</strong> most<br />
testing as any shot which is underhit will fall back off <strong>the</strong> front <strong>and</strong> run well back down <strong>the</strong> approach or even<br />
into <strong>the</strong> cavernous bunker <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> front left. At <strong>the</strong> moment, <strong>the</strong> bank to <strong>the</strong> right of <strong>the</strong> green is <strong>the</strong> safe place<br />
to miss <strong>the</strong> target but <strong>the</strong> proposed pot bunker <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> front right will dem<strong>and</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>er accuracy.<br />
Hole Changes<br />
1. Out of bounds right.<br />
2. One bunker to be added to tighten <strong>the</strong> lay up l<strong>and</strong>ing area.<br />
3. Small pot bunker to be added to <strong>the</strong> right.<br />
4. Wonderful green surface with four gre<strong>at</strong> flag positions.<br />

Hole Description<br />
The rel<strong>at</strong>ively new back tee has added some steel to <strong>the</strong> drive of <strong>the</strong> par 5 2nd hole but <strong>the</strong> longer<br />
hitters still enjoy <strong>the</strong> benefit of plenty of run on tee shots played in still or downwind conditions. Par<br />
5s are generally <strong>the</strong> holes which need to be bolstered on classic courses. While <strong>the</strong>y should remain<br />
birdie <strong>and</strong> eagle chances, <strong>the</strong>re should also be <strong>the</strong> capacity <strong>for</strong> larger scores if <strong>the</strong> risk is taken <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> shot is not pulled off. A fairway bunker to <strong>the</strong> left <strong>at</strong> just beyond 300 yards from <strong>the</strong> tee is <strong>the</strong><br />
first measure recommended but <strong>the</strong> more far reaching proposal is to move <strong>the</strong> green back by over<br />
40 yards. This has long been considered. The hole will still be reachable but <strong>the</strong> longer club required<br />
will bring <strong>the</strong> dangers of <strong>the</strong> approach more into play. The new green will take <strong>the</strong> contours of <strong>the</strong><br />
existing green as inspir<strong>at</strong>ion as it is ano<strong>the</strong>r gre<strong>at</strong> example of Harry Colt’s work.<br />
Hole Changes<br />

2. New bunker added to tighten <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ing area <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> long tee shots.<br />

The first of <strong>the</strong> par 3s sits up high <strong>and</strong> gives <strong>the</strong> golfers <strong>the</strong>ir first wondrous sight of <strong>the</strong> majority of<br />
<strong>the</strong> links. Just as <strong>the</strong> par 5s generally need <strong>the</strong> most adjustment to produce <strong>the</strong> appropri<strong>at</strong>e test,<br />
par 3s rarely need much, if any, adjustment <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> is <strong>the</strong> case with <strong>the</strong> 3rd hole. The green is well<br />
guarded by <strong>the</strong> bunker <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> front left <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> significant mound <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> front right. Missing <strong>the</strong><br />
green beyond <strong>the</strong>se on <strong>the</strong> left or right also leaves an awkward recovery. The area behind <strong>the</strong> green<br />
will be tightly mown to allow balls to slip fur<strong>the</strong>r away from <strong>the</strong> surface but this will also permit<br />
different recovery shots to be played.<br />

Hole Description<br />
The 4th hole has, since its inception, been regarded as one of <strong>the</strong> toughest long par 4 tests <strong>at</strong> <strong>Royal</strong><br />
Portush. The out of bounds lurks menacingly along <strong>the</strong> right h<strong>and</strong> side of <strong>the</strong> entire length of <strong>the</strong><br />
hole <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fairway bunker to <strong>the</strong> left middle of <strong>the</strong> fairway provides an uncompromising challenge.<br />
In order to maintain <strong>the</strong> hole’s stiff examin<strong>at</strong>ion, a new back tee will be <strong>for</strong>med along with a fairway<br />
bunker set just beyond <strong>the</strong> existing bunker. Th<strong>at</strong> will ensure th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> brave <strong>and</strong> bold will have to fire<br />
a drive between <strong>the</strong> hazards <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> out of bounds to gain <strong>the</strong>ir advantage. The green is tucked just<br />
beyond two guarding dunes right <strong>and</strong> left of <strong>the</strong> approach.<br />

Hole Description<br />
The 5th enjoys such a stunning backdrop <strong>and</strong> its green teeters on <strong>the</strong> edge of <strong>the</strong> cliffs which has<br />
a large part to play in its gre<strong>at</strong> popularity. Some of <strong>the</strong> longest hitters can look to drive or get close<br />
to <strong>the</strong> green on this downhill par 4 despite it measuring just over 400 yards. Gre<strong>at</strong> short par 4s need<br />
some bite as well as opportunity but <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ing area <strong>for</strong> long drives widens <strong>and</strong> not one bunker<br />
defends <strong>the</strong> hole although old photographs do show a greenside bunker. The proposal is to add<br />
bunkers to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ing area although <strong>the</strong>se should have rel<strong>at</strong>ively little impact upon <strong>the</strong> club golfers’<br />
tee shots. The better golfers should have some doubt in <strong>the</strong>ir mind when <strong>the</strong>y are st<strong>and</strong>ing on <strong>the</strong><br />

Hole Description<br />
The par 3 holes are a real strength of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> 6th is one of <strong>the</strong> strongest. No changes<br />
are proposed to this classic hole apart from mowing out <strong>the</strong> green surface <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> rear. No bunker is<br />
necessary so well defended is <strong>the</strong> green by <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural undul<strong>at</strong>ions of its surrounds. The obliquely<br />
angled, pear shaped green has <strong>the</strong> ridge of low dunes to its right <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall away <strong>at</strong> its front left.<br />

Hole Description<br />
The existing 8th <strong>and</strong> 9th holes were added to <strong>the</strong> layout in 1939 when Harry Colt’s original 1st <strong>and</strong><br />
18th holes in <strong>the</strong> ‘Triangle’ were lost. Sir Anthony Babington’s history of <strong>the</strong> course tells of how <strong>the</strong><br />
Club’s professional, P.G. Stevenson, came up with <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> two holes leading Harry Colt<br />
to wonder why he had not thought of it! The corner of <strong>the</strong> sharp dogleg must be reached to give an<br />
unobstructed view towards <strong>the</strong> green. It is <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> green where it is possible to detect th<strong>at</strong> Harry Colt<br />
was not involved with <strong>the</strong> detail of <strong>the</strong> hole’s design. The fl<strong>at</strong>ness of <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> lack of harmony<br />
with its surrounding dunes is in contrast to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r greens on <strong>the</strong> course. Hence <strong>the</strong> proposal to make<br />
minor adjustments to <strong>the</strong> green surface contours to improve its definition <strong>and</strong> character.<br />

This will be a new par 3 hole which is played after <strong>the</strong> existing 16th. The tees will be elev<strong>at</strong>ed in <strong>the</strong><br />
dunes behind <strong>the</strong> existing 16th green giving wonderful views over large parts of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course.<br />
The green will sit to <strong>the</strong> right of <strong>the</strong> existing 16th fairway, well below <strong>the</strong> level of <strong>the</strong> tees. This will be<br />
a very inviting green to play to.<br />

Hole Description<br />
The new par 3 15th hole will take <strong>the</strong> layout towards <strong>the</strong> tallest dunes <strong>and</strong> this will permit <strong>the</strong><br />
existing 17th drive to be extended with new tees <strong>and</strong> played from a different line. The fairway will be<br />
extended back on this line <strong>and</strong> a par 5 hole will result with a left to right dogleg. The green is more<br />
suited to come <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end of a par 5 ra<strong>the</strong>r than a long par 4, especially bearing in mind <strong>the</strong> flag<br />
positions which can be tucked away on its left h<strong>and</strong> side.<br />
Hole Changes<br />
1. New tees built.<br />
2. Fairway extended back to make <strong>the</strong> carry achievable.<br />
3. The green is really well suited <strong>for</strong> a par 5.<br />

Hole Description<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> original holes <strong>at</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong> was <strong>the</strong> existing 17th on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Course played through to<br />
<strong>the</strong> Skerries green beyond it. Between <strong>the</strong> Wars, <strong>the</strong> approach to this green was covered with s<strong>and</strong><br />
blown from <strong>the</strong> beach which made it unplayable as a long hole. Hence <strong>the</strong> existing 17th green was<br />
built <strong>and</strong> tees were <strong>for</strong>med to its left to add a short hole to <strong>the</strong> old green. The s<strong>and</strong>y approach was<br />
not a problem in <strong>the</strong> carry of <strong>the</strong> par 3 which resulted. The old tees <strong>for</strong> this par 3 can clearly be seen<br />
in <strong>the</strong> rough to <strong>the</strong> left of <strong>the</strong> existing 17th green. The restor<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong>se tees, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> addition of<br />
three more tees, will bring back to life an original <strong>Portrush</strong> green which is a gre<strong>at</strong> story in itself. It also<br />
provides <strong>the</strong> course with one of <strong>the</strong> best par 3s <strong>at</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong> with its tremendous dune backdrop.<br />
Hole Changes<br />
1. Back tees added.<br />
2. Two old tees restored.<br />
3. Forward tee added.<br />
4. The original green to be mown out larger.<br />

Hole Description<br />
The golfer does not enjoy a view of <strong>the</strong> sea anywhere on <strong>the</strong> existing <strong>Valley</strong> Course but th<strong>at</strong> will change<br />
with <strong>the</strong> new 18th hole. The tees <strong>for</strong> this hole will lie <strong>at</strong> a high elev<strong>at</strong>ion in <strong>the</strong> dunes, providing an<br />
incredibly beautiful view over <strong>the</strong> beach <strong>and</strong> sea. The hole plays towards <strong>the</strong> Ladies’ <strong>and</strong> R<strong>at</strong>hmore<br />
clubhouses. The drive will be aimed <strong>at</strong> a valley between <strong>the</strong> dunes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> green lies close to <strong>the</strong> 1st<br />
tee of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>. New dunes will be <strong>for</strong>med behind <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> right of <strong>the</strong> green to screen <strong>the</strong> car<br />
park from view <strong>and</strong> to provide separ<strong>at</strong>ion to <strong>the</strong> Skerries Par 3 Course.<br />
View of <strong>the</strong> sea from <strong>the</strong> tee<br />

Conclusion<br />
The two new holes <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r adjustments to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> Course will provide a fitting test <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> finest players <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
148th Open. However, <strong>the</strong>y will also streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> character <strong>and</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> already renowned links <strong>for</strong> all golfers. The<br />
<strong>Valley</strong> Course proposals will also lead to significant improvement to this tremendous foil <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dunluce</strong> <strong>and</strong> should lead<br />
to an increase in its popularity. Hence <strong>the</strong> overall set of proposals should make golf <strong>at</strong> <strong>Portrush</strong> an even more enjoyable<br />
experience <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>and</strong> visitors.
