Christmas in Newburyport fun and familiar songs with more contemplative quiet music with her partner, renowned resophonic guitarist Roger Williams. Amy & Roger’s vocal blend is a treat to the ear, and they always make sure to include some compelling duets in their show to the delight of the audience. Rick Lang & Friends will perform songs from The Season Of My Heart as well as Rick’s most recent CD release That’s What I Love About Christmas. Their part of the show will feature the sparkling vocals of Karen Lincoln Wilber. Karen is the former lead vocalist for the popular New England bluegrass group “Waystation”. Award winning songwriter Rick Lang’s Gospel album “Look To the Light”, released in 2010 was nominated for a Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Award and International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) award for Gospel Recorded Event Of The Year. Most recently, in October of this year, Rick was honored with an award for Holiday Song Of The Year (“That’s What I Love About Christmas”) by the IMEA at their annual Awards Show at the Marietta Performing Arts Center, Marietta GA. *To keep the shows fresh, each performing act introduces new material each season, much to the delight of the audience. Veterans will also be introduced to potential business funding sources as well as ongoing mentorships. The course is conducted by VetToCEO, a non-profit training company. If successful, this pilot program could be rolled out to VFW chapters around the country, Marsh said. VetToCEO has taught the program primarily on-line. The course offered at the Ipswich VFW will be only the second one taught in a classroom. The first was at Fort Bragg Army Base in North Carolina. “There’s widespread recognition of entrepreneurship in creating dynamic economic growth. Veterans bring an extraordinary skill set to entrepreneurial ventures. A scalable training program has the potential for enormous positive impact on the economy, the success of transitioning veterans and the challenge of veterans unemployment,” Marsh said. According to a study by the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, veterans are at least 45 percent more likely to take the plunge into entrepreneurship than people with no active-duty military experience. The result, according to census data, veterans owned 2.4 million businesses, which is about 9 percent of all businesses nationwide. About 45,000 veterans live on the North Shore. VetToCEO is a Georgia based non-profit which provides a learning program that has helped hundreds of veterans plan their entrepreneurial businesses. Former Navy SEAL Monte Heath, who is the VetToCEO executive director, wrote: “Existing veterans entrepreneurship training programs are either geographically constrained or omit the personal interaction that’s critical to building dynamic business plans. This pilot will demonstrate a scalable model through which our proven curriculum can be dynamically delivered in person in veterans clubs around the country.” Michael Horn, director and cofounder of VetToCEO, said another advantage of the program is that veterans hire other veterans. “When a veteran starts a business that’s a twofer,” he said “As more vets undertake entrepreneurial ventures, they contribute to a dynamic economy and create jobs for other veterans.” Facilitating the program will be Phil Thomas, a Navy veteran and founder and CEO of the consulting firm Boston Business Group, and Ed Brzychcy, a former Army staff sergeant and infantry squad leader who launched a consulting firm, Blue Cord Management. Speakers include sales and marketing expert Jack Derby. The Institution for Savings is a sponsor of the program. President and CEO Michael J. Long Awaited Waterfront West Project Unveiled Continued from page 1 The plan also includes 138 boat slips and 6,500 square feet of retail space. City Planning Director Andrew Port, said, “the overall scope of residential development here, along with ancillary commercial space, and a much-needed hotel – with meeting space, will be of benefit to Newburyport’s downtown vibrancy.” Port urged NED to build a 100- room hotel that would be large enough for moderate sized conventions and provide “the associated patronage for downtown businesses.” The reaction to the project has generally been favorable. When the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority (NRA) met the night after NED announced its plans, members of the quasi-public landowner, which owns 4.4 acres adjacent to the NED site, talked about the new development for less than five minutes. Several years ago when the NRA proposed constructing similar residential buildings, it ran into stiff opposition. It is still grappling with a design for those riverfront acres. This week, its discussion focused on clarifying where were the access ways to the river and if NED planned to build a path through its property to connect the two phases of the rail trail. The prospect of having a fully built-out boardwalk seems to be one of the most popular aspects of the plan. “In particular, I am pleased to see the extension of a publicly accessible boardwalk along the water’s edge, something this community has been looking forward to,” Port said. “This boardwalk can also serve both as a public amenity, reinforcing the maritime connection our downtown once had to the Merrimack River, and as a means to bridge public access from Phase I of the Rail Trail eastward across the central waterfront, as part of the NRA’s waterfront park expansion, to Phase II of the Clipper City Rail Trail.” Kelley estimated that the project will pay the city $2.2 million in taxes, as compared to the $75,000 the site pays in taxes now. The construction will also generate $1.3 million in permit fees. At build out, it will create 100 permanent jobs. The construction will employ 300 workers, according to the NED presentation. Port said the project will help solve the problem in Newburyport of retail stores closing because the summer months do not generate enough revenue to stay. “I routinely hear of downtown businesses opening and then closing, due in part to the seasonal nature of our tourism and community festivals,” Port said. “The proposed composition of public space and private uses will complement and support, rather than change or detract from the downtown we all love.” With only 6,500 square feet in retail space, the new project will not compete with nearby downtown shops and restaurants. It will create more residents living and shopping in downtown. This is important to NED, which owns and leases out about 70 percent of the downtown retail space. The architectural plans call for most of the buildings to be constructed of red brick to match downtown buildings. Port urged NED to use “brick, granite and precast architectural elements in the proposed buildings for consistency with the historic architecture of downtown Newburyport.” The project is likely to keep city boards and some state agencies busy in coming months as “there are many details to discuss and review in any development proposal, such things as pedestrian access, vehicular circulation, infrastructure improvements, and architectural design,” Port said.
