employees opportunities to reconcile their working hours with family life.<br />

The compatibility of family and career is becoming<br />

increasingly more important. This topic does not only<br />

refer to finding a balance between children and career<br />

because, in our aging society, the compatibility of nursing<br />

care and career is also becoming a challenge for a growing<br />

number of employees. A large number of companies<br />

in the <strong>Bonn</strong>/Rhein-<strong>Sieg</strong> region are facing this challenge.<br />

In this regard, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce<br />

<strong>Bonn</strong>/Rhein-<strong>Sieg</strong> supports them in manifold ways.<br />

“Compatibility of Family and Career” – this has long since<br />

changed from a trend to a fact that is lived-out reality, as it<br />

is a part of daily working life. Increasing numbers of large,<br />

medium-sized and small companies in Germany have<br />

recognised that they will have to offer their employees<br />

possibilities to harmonise their work with time for their<br />

family. This does not only apply for persons who are already<br />

employed but also for the future workforce. In times in<br />

which there is a lack of family-friendliness, this is an im -<br />

portant benefit in the competition for the best brains.<br />

Also in the <strong>Bonn</strong>/Rhein-<strong>Sieg</strong> region, more and more companies<br />

are aligning themselves to the principles of a familyconscious<br />

corporate culture and personnel policy. Here,<br />

attention is paid to both sides of the “family coin”. The focus<br />

is not only on those employees who would like to have both<br />

children and a career, since increasing numbers of older<br />

employees are also facing the task of nursing a member of<br />

the family, in most cases the own mother or father or, at<br />

least, they spend quite a bit of time doing what is necessary<br />

to organise accommodation in a care facility. For this, today<br />

more than ever before, the employees are reliant on flexible<br />

work time models.<br />

Three examples: family-friendly companies in<br />

<strong>Bonn</strong> and Rhein-<strong>Sieg</strong><br />

This flexibility, for instance, is offered by the Reifenhäuser<br />

Group, based in Troisdorf. The machine builder employs 900<br />

people at this location. “Today, much more frequently than<br />

in the past, employees and applicants ask what we can offer<br />

them to unite work and family interests with one another”,
