Exploring the Role of 'Visual Catalysts' on Influencing People's Attraction and Use of Place

FIELDWORK PROCEDURE
The procedure for behaviour mapping involves <strong>the</strong> observation, tallying and note taking <strong>of</strong>
what is happening in <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case study during <strong>the</strong> allotted times. These observation
periods, being over two time slots in three session, will provide <strong>the</strong> information needed to
analyse, and compare, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> ‘visual catalysts’ have an influence over <strong>the</strong> experience
<strong>of</strong> place. Each period <strong>of</strong> behaviour mapping involved one hour <strong>of</strong> observation. As such, <strong>the</strong>
behaviour mapping will occur before, during and after <strong>the</strong> installation as shown by table table
4.1 below:

The selection <strong>of</strong> dates, days and time blocks were determined by several factors. The most
significant factor was that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> temporary public space installation being active during <strong>the</strong>
early weeks <strong>of</strong> June and during <strong>the</strong> evening – hence why evening recordings are prevalent in
<strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> June. Ano<strong>the</strong>r factor was <strong>the</strong> desire to also observe <strong>the</strong> changes in behaviours
across different times <strong>of</strong> days and during busy periods when <strong>the</strong> interventions are not active –
hence why early afternoon recordings are prevalent. Additionally, <strong>the</strong> time blocks <strong>of</strong> one hour
shall be sufficient for observation purposes due to <strong>the</strong> small scale <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site. Lastly, for stage
three <strong>the</strong>se specific dates were chosen due to it being several weeks after <strong>the</strong> conclusion
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> event; with this being important to determine whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> place has
endured as asked by one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research questions.
The behaviour mapping involves <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> observation, mapping, tallying and note taking. The
wea<strong>the</strong>r, site conditions and o<strong>the</strong>r unforeseen phenomena will also be noted on <strong>the</strong> arrival
<strong>of</strong> each period to use for later comparison if <strong>the</strong>y have any effective relationship with <strong>the</strong>
results. Likewise, following <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> each period <strong>of</strong> mapping some concluding notes
will be taken on <strong>the</strong> thoughts and significant behaviours observed in <strong>the</strong> period. A tallying and
shorthand system will be implemented for <strong>the</strong> mapping and observation <strong>of</strong> key characteristics
