Sculptures breathe and kings weep in Shakespeare’s late
masterpiece of wit and wisdom, The Winter’s Tale.
Cheek by Jowl tackle the play’s countless hairpin turns, through
multiple countries and over the course of sixteen years, in a fiercely
contemporary production.
When King Leontes suspects his wife of infidelity, he throws her in
prison and initiates a chain of events that destroy his once happy
family. Fundamental questions about redemption and forgiveness
are tackled in this tour-de-force interpretation, testing the limits of
hope and humanity.
Playing at the Citizens Theatre for the first time, Cheek by Jowl is
one of the world’s leading theatre companies. Their production of
The Winter’s Tale has received rave reviews during its European
tour.
“As invigorating and intoxicating as a shot of adrenaline: as exciting
as theatre can get!” Luxemburger Wort
MOVEMENT EJ Boyle
Strutting adolescent double act Phil and Spanky have broken free
of the confines of the A. F. Stobo & Co. Carpet Factory in Paisley
and are off to the annual staff dance. Phil may have lost his job
and been rejected by the Art School, but he can still dream of a life
beyond the slab room.
John Byrne’s funny and poignant Slab Boys trilogy paints a vivid
picture of the tough, rebellious, working-class culture of 1950s
industrial Scotland. Following our hugely popular production of
The Slab Boys in 2015, this next instalment in the era-defining
trilogy is directed by Caroline Paterson.
The cast includes well-known faces from much-loved Scottish
comedies and drama including Barbara Rafferty, Scott Fletcher
(River City, Gary: Tank Commander), Ryan Fletcher (River City,
Citizens Theatre’s The Choir) and Paul-James Corrigan
(Gary: Tank Commander).
The production also tours to the King’s Theatre Edinburgh from
DIRECTOR Rufus Norris
In the days after the EU referendum, the National Theatre of
Great Britain began a nationwide listening project. A team of
interviewers spoke to people around the country – from Leicester
to Derry/Londonderry and Merthyr Tydfil to Glasgow – to hear
their views of the country and town they live in, their lives, their
future, and the referendum.
Using exact words taken from the interviews, My Country: A Work
In Progress puts those conversations centre stage. Rufus Norris,
Director of the National Theatre, collaborates with Poet Laureate
Carol Ann Duffy to create this new performance which opens in
London before starting its UK tour at the Citizens Theatre.
At the rural retreat of the eccentric Bliss family, retired actress
Judith is learning the names of all the flowers in the garden, her
children are speculating about her possible return to the stage,
while their father David is upstairs trying to finish his new novel.
Each has invited a guest for the weekend and as the party settles
down to an after-dinner parlour game, the hapless visitors rapidly
find themselves characters in the Bliss’s self-made melodrama.
Revelation, romance and outrageous behaviour set the tone of this
1920s’ comedy which explores the games people play to avoid the
realities of everyday existence.
Noël Coward’s riotous farce charting the unconventional antics
of a self-dubbed bohemian family is directed by Artistic Director
Dominic Hill.
When retired bank manager and dahlia enthusiast Henry Pulling
meets his long-lost Aunt Augusta at his mother’s funeral, he has
no idea of the whirlwind of exotic adventures that lie ahead of him.
Coaxed into a life on the road, Henry’s travels take him across the
world as he unravels the unconventional details of his aunt’s past.
Hilarious, witty and great fun, Giles Havergal’s celebrated stage
adaptation of Graham Greene’s classic comedy challenges a cast
of four to bring to life more than 20 characters through the course
of the play. First performed at the Citizens Theatre in 1989, the
play became an Olivier Award-winning West End hit, and is now
staged around the world.
Director Phillip Breen returns to the Citizens Theatre having
previously directed True West, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg
Telling the greatest love story of the Celtic tradition, Kneehigh’s
Tristan & Yseult blends comedy, live music, grand passions and
tender truths in an irresistible night of love.
Cornish King Mark is at war: he rules with his head not his heart.
But he hasn’t counted on falling head over heels for his enemy’s
sister, or expected the arrival of the enigmatic Tristan.
Tristan & Yseult catapulted Kneehigh onto the international
stage over a decade ago. Since then the show has played to rapt
audiences across the world. This latest incarnation of their most
successful show sees one of the UK’s most innovative theatre
companies tour to the Citizens Theatre for the first time.
Tristan & Yseult has been hailed by critics as “a triumph”,
“deliriously joyful” and “breathtaking in every respect”.
“if this show doesn't make you fall in love with theatre, there's no
potion on Earth that can help you.”
LIGHTING Lyn Cunningham
Scherzo for Piano and Stick is a dramatic duologue for piano
and stick performed by Mia Theil Have and composer Nikola
Kodjabashia. Nikola’s distinctive and theatrical musical style has
provided the soundtrack to many Citizens’ productions in recent
years, including Crime and Punishment, Hamlet, A Christmas
Carol, This Restless House and Hansel & Gretel.
Created as an homage to Italian cartoonist Osvaldo Cavandoli’s
celebrated 1970’s cartoon series, La Linea, Mia Theil Have performs
with a 1.9m-long wooden stick in a fast-paced, meticulously
crafted physical performance punctuated with short poems
by Peter Oswald. Nikola’s original live score moves between
contemporary classical, world music and jazz.
Scherzo is a shifting landscape of images and emotions, a
kaleidoscope of imaginative transformations which are in turn
light and impish and darkly unsettling.
A poetic, political black comedy, written and directed by
Drew Taylor, about what we could do, what we should do and
how burying your face in the latest cat video isn't enough right now.
We are living in familiar territory – a period that history books will
say leads up to something frightening. We are ignoring facts – letting
charisma and empty promises cloud our judgement. We are just
like lots of countries before us. We are allowing an Alternative Right
perspective – Farage, Le Pen, Trump. Should we be going Left, or is a
new direction needed?
Drew Taylor is the first winner of the Somewhere New award
for contemporary Scottish theatre makers, created by Take Me
Somewhere and the Citizens Theatre. Take Me Somewhere is a
new festival of contemporary performance for Glasgow, which
builds on the legacy of The Arches arts programme.
Following the performance, a playlet from Fear And Misery
of The Third Reich by Bertolt Brecht will be delivered.
