the Stevens Point Area, passing the
Wisconsin River, Plover River and other
streams and creeks. The trailhead is
located at the Schmeeckle Reserve, a
beautiful 280-acre park that’s part of the
UW-Stevens Point campus.
Portage County is also home to
a segment of the Ice Age Trail, a
thousand-mile walking path that winds
through terrain sculpted by glaciers.
In eastern Portage County, Standing
Rocks County Park features 13 miles of
trails open for hiking and biking, as well
33 holes of disc golf. The trailhead is
located off Standing Rocks Road.
The community is still known for its outstanding
beer and so much more: companies such as
Delta Dental, Sentry Insurance, Travel Guard
and Herrschners all call this place home. The
University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point is one of
the community’s treasures. The 400-acre campus
includes Schmeeckle Reserve, the Wisconsin
Conservation Hall of Fame, the Museum of Natural
History, the Carlsten Art Gallery and the Allen F.
Blocher Planetarium.
Plover
Just south of Stevens Point on the east shore of
the Wisconsin River is the Village of Plover. This
charming community is conveniently located at
the crossroads of I-39 and is home to a variety of
retailers and businesses, including O’so Brewing
Company and Great Northern Distilling. The village
also has many great parks and the Korean War
Memorial of Wisconsin at Lake Pacawa.
Town of Plover
The Town of Plover is a great place to live, offering
peaceful surroundings just minutes from shopping,
dining and other businesses. The town has a rich
agricultural tradition and is home to some of the
state’s largest vegetable farms.
Amherst
On the banks of the Tomorrow River, you’ll find the
Village of Amherst, a quiet but thriving community
with a very strong sense of place. Amherst is home
to the Tomorrow River State Trail, Lettie W. Jensen
Community Center and Central Waters
Brewing Company.
Other Gems
The countryside is dotted with small communities
like Junction City, Almond, Bancroft, Rosholt,
Nelsonville, Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst
Junction. The rural Lake DuBay area in northwestern
Portage County offers many recreational
opportunities and encompasses most of the
townships of Eau Pleine, Hull and Dewey.
