The 2016 Review
This year’s review is packed with more than just photographs. There are videos included
as well which does lengthen the viewing time but you can always shorten the videos by
grabbing the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen to fast forward through them more
quickly. You can also flick to the next slide if you do not want to view a video.
The 2016 Review
2016 continued as 2015 ended for Mackenzie & Ebert – rather busy!
Some highlights included:-
Trump Turnberry
The Ailsa Course opened on target with the members playing the first rounds on 30 th May and hotel guests on 1 st
June as scheduled. This was an incredible feat with work on the reconstruction of every green, every tee, every
bunker and 5 new holes only starting at the end of September 2015. Everyone involved must be congratulated on
such an achievement. Mr Trump flew in for the Grand Opening of the Ailsa and the Hotel in the middle of June. At the
end of the year, the course received the award of No. 1 ranking in Golf Monthly’s Top 100 courses in UK & Ireland and
the award for International Renovation of the Year by GOLF magazine.
Once the Ailsa project was completed, the focus shifted to the Kintyre Course. The completely new holes at the far
end of the course, on Bains Hill, will be the equal of the coastal holes of the Ailsa Course in terms of their setting. The
redesigned course is to be opened again on the birth date of Robert the Bruce, the first King of Scotland, on 11 th July.
The 2016 Review
The 2016 Review
Royal Portrush
The Dunluce Course now has two new holes which will be open for play in the early summer of 2017. They were
actually playable by the end of 2016 but some extra months will allow the fairways to be refined even further. The
new par five 7 th and par four 8 th holes look as though they have been there forever which is a testament to the
construction work as both holes had to be shaped from tee to green. The new 2 nd , 3 rd and 8 th (to be the 10 th green in
the new layout) were opened early in the playing season of 2016 as were all of the other changes to the course.
The Royal Portrush members and the Rathmore members have already enjoyed the new 15 th , 16 th , 17 th and 18 th holes
on the Valley Course which opened for play in May 2016. The opening of these holes allowed a start to be made on
the two new Dunluce holes. The par 3 Skerries Course reopened shortly afterwards with two stunning new holes with
views down onto the beach.

The Open Venues
As well as the major projects at Turnberry and Royal Portrush, input has also been provided to 5 of the other Open
venues. Advisory visits were made before and after The Open at Royal Troon, a dune construction plan put out to
tender at Royal Lytham, the 2 iconic bunkers on the 4 th hole at Royal St. George’s were reconstructed, work got
underway at Carnoustie on adjustments to the 3 rd hole and Open practice facilities and the adjustment of two green
surrounds at Royal Liverpool (below) was implemented in the autumn.
2016 Notable Projects
2016 Notable Projects
Some other notable projects were:-
St Andrews – New Course
The company was delighted to be invited to provide input at the Home of Golf, St Andrews in 2016, advising on the
New Course. The project has involved converting areas of rough, which were formerly covered by gorse, into bare
sand areas. This has followed similar work at Royal Troon, Turnberry and Royal Portrush.
Prestwick
Another historic course to be advised is Prestwick, the venue of the first Open Championship. A bunker strategy
report has been produced for the Club. More detail will be added to this in 2017.
Portmarnock & The Island, Dublin, Ireland
This wonderful pair of classic links courses will host The Amateur Championship in 2019 with Portmarnock hosting
the matchplay part of the event. Portmarnock has been advised for a number of years but The Island is a new
commission in 2016. Back tees, bunkering adjustments and dune construction are being implemented at
Portmarnock. At The Island, proposals have been developed for a more extensive set of changes. Assuming that these
are approved by the Club, the implementation will be split either side of The Amateur.
Royal County Down, Newcastle, Northern Ireland
Following the addition of the three new holes to the Annesley Links, which weaves its way through the No.1 Course,
the focus moved onto the new practice ground and the formation of dunes to the right of the 17 th hole on the
Championship Course in 2016. These dunes were intended to divide the 17 th from the practice area and have really
improved the character of the 17 th . Once again, the technique of lifting and relaying rough vegetation, called
translocation, has proved itself in allowing changes to look as though they have been in place forever.
2016 Notable Projects
Trevose Golf and Country Club, Cornwall, England
Work on this glorious Harry Colt layout continued in 2016 with focus turning to the renowned 4 th hole as well as the
10 th and 18 th . The 4 th is one of the most photogenic holes in the UK with Constantine Bay in the background but,
despite that, the hole did not live up to expectations. It has been the subject of a complete overhaul with new tees,
bunkers and a huge new rolling green from which the glorious backdrop is now visible unlike the old green.
2016 Notable Projects
2016 Notable Projects
Saunton West Course, North Devon, England
Despite having two excellent links courses, Saunton is not content with sitting back and doing nothing. It has a
progressive policy to re-invest in its courses and this year’s focus was on the West Course with an extensive
programme completed. Back tees were added on 7 holes; 8 bunkers were inserted on the 3 rd , 8 th , 10 th and 12 th holes
on this lightly bunkered course; a ditch was re-routed on the 12 th ; fairway softening on the 6 th and 12 th and green
surrounds reshaping undertaken on the 11 th .
The goal is to create two courses of a similar test that are both capable of hosting top class national amateur events.
2016 Notable Projects
Royal Automobile Club, Old Course, Woodcote Park, Surrey, England
All of the bunkers on 12 holes of Herbert Fowler’s Old Course were revamped during 2016 with the remaining holes
to be completed in early 2017. Bunkers were renovated, new ones added and others filled in, often replaced with
closely mown green surround areas. The overall sand area has been significantly decreased, while the visual impact of
the bunkers has been significantly improved and their strategic impact greatly increased.
It demonstrates what can be done relatively quickly to transform the appearance and playing characteristics of a
course in a short construction period.
Golf At Goodwood, West Sussex, England
After a break of a year, Golf At Goodwood has now completed the revamp of all of the bunkers on its Downs Course.
The work has involved rationalising bunker numbers, easing off certain areas to make the course more enjoyable for
the regular golfer and stiffening up the driving test for better players. The bunkers have been sculpted to blend in
harmoniously with the downland landscape.
2016 Notable Projects
2016 Notable Projects
Effingham Golf Club, Surrey, England
Effingham’s rolling bunker renovation continued with the 1 st , 9 th and 18 th holes complete, leaving 6 to do. This
downland Harry Colt layout is coming to life again with bunkers that have more shape to them, sited to test the better
players more thoroughly, inspired by the words of the great man himself:-
“For testing the long driver, and also for putting a premium upon accuracy, it is highly desirable to include a number of
long optional carries in the round, and also to provide opportunities for the bold and straight driver to play close past
the edge of a hazard which he cannot carry. In all such cases it will be arranged so that the player who has brought off
the drive successfully should gain a substantial advantage over his more timid or less skilful opponent.”
2016 Notable Projects
Oakmere Golf Club, Nottinghamshire, England
Intent on consolidating its position in Notts golf, Oakmere Golf Club continued its heavy investment in its golf
facilities. A new irrigation system has been installed, 10 holes on the Admiral’s Course have been fully re-bunkered
and three new greens complete on the Commander’s Course. Work resumes in early 2017.
Kedleston Park Golf Club, Derbyshire, England
Having rebuilt every bunker over 3 winters, Kedleston Park re-launched its course in 2016. In that period, it has filled
its membership list again, re-introduced entrance fees and funded the renovation project through the additional
income generated by the increase in membership activity. All in all, a positive outcome for all involved. It remains at
top spot in the county in the Top 100 rankings.
2016 Notable Projects
Canadian Projects
Advice has continued to be provided at a number of Canadian courses during 2016 – Angus Glen, Goodwood and
Hamilton Golf & Country Club.
Angus Glen, Markham, Ontario
The South Course was renovated in the off season of 2014 / 2015 and hosted the PanAm Games very successfully in
July 2015. 2016 saw drought conditions affect the Toronto area so a focus has been to reduce the areas covered by
irrigation by increasing the areas of fescue rough.
Goodwood, Ontario
This ultra private course continues to draw great reviews from the lucky few who get to play. The possibility of
lengthening the par 5 18 th hole was looked at during 2016.
Hamilton Golf & Country Club, Hamilton, Ontario
Harry Colt designed this great course in 1914 but a further 9 holes were added much later. The Club has hosted the
Canadian Open on a number of occasions. A Masterplan was produced for the Club in 2015 and a presentation was
made to the members at the end of 2016 regarding these proposals. This involved representing the changes on drone
video footage of each of the three loops of nine holes – a new and effective form of presentation.

2016 Notable Projects
Existing Course Projects In Finland
The company’s long history of experience of advising courses in Finland has continued in 2016.
Pickala
The new 1 st and 2 nd greens on the Seaside Course bedded in during 2016 and the new putting green was opened and
proved very popular. The Short Game Area was the focus for construction during the year with a new target green
being built.
Tuusula
Tuusula was the first course in Finland which the company advised. Tee projects were assessed during 2016 along
with discussion regarding the long term strategy for the course.
Vierumäki
The green reconstruction project has continued in 2016 with the 6 th , 8 th , 12 th and 13 th greens opening for play and
the 2 nd and 14 th green being rebuilt. The project will be completed in 2017.
Vantaa, Helsinki, Finland
The front nine was played by the share holders by the end of the playing year on this new course very close to
Helsinki Airport. The course is being built in two phases with the front nine completed during 2016 and the back nine
awaiting landfill before the golf construction can commence. A huge Himalayas putting green (shown below) has
been built at the clubhouse which joins onto the 9 th green.
2016 Notable Projects
2016 Notable Projects
Golf Terramar, Sitges, Spain
The original nine hole course at Terramar, just south of Barcelona, was designed by Tom Simpson in 1927. This was
extended to 18 holes but, more recently, a new 3 rd hole with a green right on the coast was built. Work on this hole
was completed during 2016 and a plan for a major reorganisation of the back nine was the subject of a number of
planning visits throughout the year.
Noordwijkse, Holland
This tremendous links course to the south west of Amsterdam now has a new Green Committee. 2016 has been
spent discussing the way forward for a number of projects including bunker and green reconstruction.
The 2016 Review
Once again this year, we have been entrusted to work on many of the great courses across the British Isles,
Europe and also in Canada. Working sensitively on courses where the great old architects have plied their trade
is part of what we have always done in our careers.
Chris Huggett & His UAV (Drone)
Chris Huggett has been a key member of Mackenzie & Ebert since the formation of the company in 2005. He has
been responsible for producing all of the plans and visualisations which have assisted with virtually every project, as
well as artwork for all of our publications such as the booklets which have featured the proposals for Turnberry and
Royal Portrush and the changes made to Royal Troon for The 144 th Open this year.
Now Chris has added another string to his bow by earning a qualification from the Civil Aviation Authority to fly a UAV
(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or Drone) on a commercial basis. This has already allowed the company to illustrate
proposals in an even more interesting way and finished changes in even greater detail.
The other service which Mackenzie & Ebert now offers is producing drone fly throughs of existing courses. The
services extend to editing the final video footage to the requirements of the club.

2016 Mike Howard
Mike Howard – The Newest Member of Mackenzie & Ebert
Mike Howard started working for the company in 2016. Mike studied Environmental Geography at Stirling University,
whilst part of the golf scholarship programme and then at the University of Edinburgh where he gained a Masters
degree in Landscape Architecture. He was also an R&A scholar for six years.
Mike has immediately provided valuable input to a number of projects carrying out historic research, produced
visualisations and provided input into layout design and detailed design. He has also marked out new and redesigned
bunkers for a number of projects.
