January 2017 celebrating

the first, the fastest and the famous!

This January marks the 90th

anniversary of the first live football

match broadcast by the BBC

World Service, featuring Arsenal's

League One fixture against

Sheffield United at Highbury.

George Allison, who became

Arsenal manager after the death

of Herbert Chapman, provided

the commentary on the game,

which was a 1-1 draw.

Fast forward 90 years and it's unlikely Arsene Wenger would be

providing any commentary other than a post-match interview!

However, for an impressive piece of modern architecture setting

the scene for an array of events, The Emirates Stadium provides

a place befitting Arsenal FC's ambition to maintain the mantle as

one of the world's greatest football clubs. It's also equally impressive

world. Founded in 1857 by William Prest and Nathaniel

Fifty years ago, on 4 January 1967, aged just 45, Donald Campbell

lost his life trying to break the Water Speed Record on Coniston

Water, Cumbria. In the course of his short life, he broke eight world

speed records on water and land, and he remains the only person

to set both world land and water speed records in the same year.

Along with his passion for speed, Campbell was a great patriot

and saw his achievements as being for the greater good of Britain.

If it's a Cumbrian setting you're

Jacquelane Airnes is Sales Director for the portfolio

of eight Hilton Hotels, on the previous pages.

Under franchise, managed by Westmont Hospitality

Group, all eight hotels received a significant capital

investment throughout 2016 and have now all

rebranded to DoubleTree by Hilton.

What does your typical week at work

involve?

At the moment, my weeks vary. I visit two or

three of the hotels and spend time with the

Sales Manager at the property, looking at our

commercial focus and key activities to drive

sales. It’s a very exciting time for all the hotels

following a £16M refurbishment programme

and the re-brand to DoubleTree by Hilton.

I often visit clients alongside our Director of

Corporate Sales, Sue Thompson and Director

of Leisure Sales, Nici Pagels. It’s a key

focus to keep our clients up-to-date with

the developments at the hotels and discuss

activities to strengthen our partnerships and

grow our business in 2017.

We frequently engage with the Hilton

Worldwide Sales Team too as they represent

our hotels globally.

Are there any events you have held that

stand out for you?

DoubleTree Strathclyde recently welcomed

the Tour of Britain cycling event. We had over

70 cyclists (including bicycles!) stay with us

during their tour.

The feedback was fantastic as the hotel is

perfect for sport as we have the largest

LivingWell Leisure Club in Europe.

What attracted you to the leisure industry?

As part of my Marketing Management degree at Napier University I had to complete a six month

work placement and I was lucky enough to secure a placement as a Marketing Assistant for

Milton Hotels, which was a Scottish based family run hotel group.

This was a fantastic introduction to the Hospitality and Leisure industry. I enjoyed the buzz of the

hotels and loved the variety of segments that you can work on from a marketing perspective.

At this point, I knew that this is what I wanted to do, and 16 years later I've not looked back.

Why should an Event Organiser use your

hotels for their next event?

We have new, fresh, vibrant hotel meeting

rooms with great AV facilities and attention to

detail. Our meeting planners will help create

a memorable event and support organisers

throughout the process. We offer dynamic,

funky break time options including Starbucks,

cookies, popcorn, make your own pancakes

along with a selection of healthy options.

Our hotels are located in fantastic locations

that are great meeting points. Coventry has a

meeting capacity for up to 600 delegates and

is an easy two hours from many key locations

with major motorways including the M1, M6,

M40 and very close to the NEC.

What achievements are you most proud of?

I am very proud of my part in the successful

launch and re-brand of DoubleTree London

Hyde Park and DoubleTree Ealing Hotels in

2013. Following a £20 million refurbishment

programme, both hotels launched into the

London market as the ninth and tenth

DoubleTree Hotels in London.

This was a very fast paced and exciting role

and led to my new position leading the sales

team through this recent rebrand process

from Hilton to DoubleTree.

What are your professional goals and

dreams?

I am excited to be part of a new, dynamic

sales team embarking on our first year as a

portfolio of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotels. I have

come in at the start of a very exciting project

and I look forward to seeing all of our hard

work come to fruition in 2017.

It’s also worth mentioning that DoubleTree

Aberdeen Treetops has the largest hotel event

space in the area. They recently held a Boyzlife

event with over 800 local ladies in attendance.

What do you love doing when not working?

My job takes me to Scotland on a regular

basis which is great as I get to spend time with

my friends and family. I have lived in London

for ten years so it is always good to go back to

my Scottish home!

What’s your favourite meal on the menu

at your venue(s)?

I absolutely love a starter at DoubleTree

Aberdeen Treetops; smoked trout and

beetroot cheesecake and pickled fennel.

It’s delicious!

I have a little girl who is three years old and

I love spending my time with her.

Who do you admire and why?

I admire my Mum most. She worked as a

midwife for over 30 years and brought thousands

of babies into the world. She is a brilliant mum

to my brother and me, and a fantastic granny

to her three granddaughters. I aspire to have

the strength, kindness and tenacity of my mum

and hope I can set the same example for

my daughter.
