Publisher 22CM to launch
Healthy Living Expo on Jan. 14
JON DEPAOLIS
Freelance Reporter
For many winters, publisher
22nd Century Media has put together
a Healthy Living Guide
to inform residents about all the
area has to offer in terms of living
better.
But on Saturday, Jan. 14, those
words will become reality, as the
company hosts its first Healthy
Living Expo.
The free event is to take place
from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Tinley
Park Convention Center, 18451
Convention Center Drive in Tinley
Park.
“For years, we’ve done a
Healthy Living Guide, always
around the first week of January,”
said Heather Warthen, chief
events officer at 22nd Century
Media. “We wanted to partner
it [this year] with an event. It’s
been a very popular special section,
and this can help your New
Year’s resolution.”
And with 2017 set to begin,
the event is perfectly timed.
“I think a lot of people view
January as a time to restart or reexamine
what is going on in their
lives,” Warthen said. “This expo
can help with that.
“We do a good job of getting
a variety of vendors. We have
everything from insurance and
health to physical therapy and
weight loss.”
The expo also is to offer
free, 30-minute fitness classes
throughout the day.
“We wanted to give people
this opportunity,” Warthen said.
“Yeah, you can go to your gym,
but also come check out these
free classes.”
Body Tech Total Fitness,
of Mokena, and Heart & Sole
Dance, of Tinley Park, have
signed up to run some of the
classes.
“A dance class could be very
different than a cardio class,”
Warthen said. “Both are using
similar aspects but in different
ways. Maybe someone will find
a new workout they want to do.
But, most of all, we want people
to come have fun and get off to
a healthy start to the New Year.”
Warthen said there will be
some breakout sessions with
medical personnel, as well as
Warthen said. “We’re excited to
have him onboard.”
These events are organized by
22nd Century Media to engage
with its communities.
“We are your community
newspaper, but we also want to
bring you out into those communities,”
Warthen said. “It gives
people the opportunity to learn
about some local businesses
maybe they had no idea were in
their backyard. It also gives you
the opportunity to meet people
with similar interests.
“It’s free, so it’s a great chance
for people to get out and have
some fun.”
Tinley Park doctor’s program may just be
the prescription for true weight loss
The hidden reasons most people have trouble losing weight, explained
Many people start
weight loss programs with
the best of intentions, only
to give up due to lack of energy,
inability to resist the
food “cravings” that sabotage
weight loss, or, even
worse, eating what are
supposed to be the “right”
foods when in actuality
they are the wrong foods
for them. Even worse is
to lose the weight initially
only to gain it right back.
It is possible that these
people start diet and exercise
programs while still
suffering from metabolic
imbalances and chronic
“If you are serious about losing weight
and getting healthy I urge you to attend
my free class to learn about the hidden
reasons most people have trouble losing
weight.”
Dr. Ed Beyer — D.C. in Tinley Park
conditions they may not
even know they have.
Dr. Ed Beyer, D.C., in
Tinley Park has started
offering his metabolic
weight management program
in conjunction with
Shape ReClaimed. This
dual program uncovers
the causes of the problem
so that they can be eradicated.
With this unique
approach, patients are getting
extraordinary results
in a practitioner-monitored
program.
Dr. Beyer said that “…
common metabolic problems
that people have prevent
them from successfully
and permanently losing
fat and gaining energy …
these are the hidden reasons
why most people
have trouble losing weight
and staying healthy.”
These include:
• Unstable (too high and
too low) blood sugar
and Type 2 diabetes and
metabolic syndrome;
also, reactive hypoglycemia
• Adrenal gland fatigue
• Undetected poor thyroid
function
• Undetected anemias
• Hormone imbalances and
why you have them and
how to fix them
In order to manage your
health, you need to look at
the causes of the problem,
not just the symptoms.
This means proper testing.
Along with metabolic
testing, monitoring and
management, the Shape
ReClaimed program
has shown fantastic results
with so many of Dr. Beyer’s
patients.
Dr. Beyer invites anyone
interested in learning more
about this program to attend
his free informative
workshop in Tinley Park.
“If you are serious about
losing weight and getting
healthy, I urge you to attend
my free class to learn
about the hidden reasons
most people have trouble
losing weight,” he said.
Good news for smokers.
Smarter detection is smarter prevention. The good news is that lung cancer is relatively rare, even among smokers. The bad
news is that if lung cancer is diagnosed too late, it’s deadly. Of course, quitting smoking is the best prevention; you already know
that. But even if you’re not ready to quit, you can be smarter about managing your risk. The Ingalls Spiral CT Lung Scan is an early
alert system, providing the earliest possible detection of stage 1 tumors, when they can be most successfully treated.
• Ultra-precise detection of small tumors • Low level radiation exposure • Fast and easy procedure
• Clinically proven to save lives • Physician order required
Are you eligible? You must meet the following criteria to qualify for the CT scan:
• 55 through 77 years old
• Have a 30 pack-year history of smoking (1 pack/day - 30 yrs, 2 packs/day - 15 yrs, etc.)
• Are a current smoker, or quit within the last 15 years.
• No signs or symptoms of lung cancer
Now approved for reimbursement
by Medicare and many private
insurance plans.
Smith Crossing residents derive
enrichment from Renaissance
Corner Academy program
Residents of Smith
Crossing in Orland Park
possess a thirst for knowledge
and a sense of value.
These traits land them
in classroom seats at St.
Xavier University’s nearby
campus on Fridays in
fall and spring for courses
conducted by Renaissance
Corner Academy, a lifeenrichment
program for
older adults. For a $50
fee, they can sign up for
as many of 31 classes as
they like, exploring a variety
of topics including
the arts, politics, psychology,
economics, history,
poetry and more. The only
restriction is that members
attend only classes they’ve
signed up for.
Smith Crossing residents
also enjoy the convenience
of a shuttle that takes them
to the nearby university
campus. Even better, they
can attend “How the Irish
Saved Civilization” in a
classroom at Smith Crossing.
Renaissance Corner
Academy members who
do not live at Smith Crossing
also can attend.
“The class at Smith
Crossing is special because
participants can
always grab lunch at the
Smith Crossing Bistro —
we don’t have anything
like that at St. Xavier,”
said Marion Sherlock, a
Renaissance Corner Academy
board member and
former president.
Renaissance Corner
Academy began offering
classes under the name
Renaissance Academy at
the Orland Park St. Xavier
campus in 2005, growing
from 50 enrollees then to
302 in the term that ended
the first week in November.
Semesters conclude
with a luncheon at Silver
Lakes Country Club,
which is covered by the
$50 class fee.
Smith Crossing residents
have been so taken
with Renaissance Corner
Academy courses, several
have even stepped up to
serve as course facilitators.
“We call those who instruct
‘facilitators,’ not
‘teachers,’” Sherlock said.
“That’s because they don’t
necessarily teach. It’s
more that they facilitate
open discussions on a variety
of topics.”
Jane Andringa and her
husband, John, have attended
Renaissance Corner
Academy courses for
the last four years — even
before their move to Smith
Crossing from Palos Park
in 2014.
“I always sign up for the
poetry appreciation course
facilitated by Bill Hermanson,”
Jane Andringa
said. “He selects poetry,
we have copies and work
through the poems. It’s a
wonderful class.”
Last year, Andringa, a
retired special education
teacher who earned a doctorate
in curriculum development
from Loyola University,
began serving as a
co-facilitator for a course
titled, “Understanding the
Mysteries of Human Behavior.”
The class content
was presented in eight installments
using a DVD
series developed by a
Duke University professor.
In the spring of 2017,
when Renaissance Corner
Academy classes start
again, Andringa expects to
lead another eight installments
in the human behavior
series.
Smith Crossing resident
Charlie Ranlett also has
taken and taught Renaissance
Corner Academy
courses. This past term,
the retired human resources
executive and local history
buff taught a course
called “New and Different
Chicago Personalities.”
“You never know how
people are going to respond
to the courses,”
Ranlett said. “I profiled
several Chicago notables,
but I got the most reaction
when we spotlighted
Al Capone. I think he provoked
the most discussion.
It seemed like just about
everyone knew someone,
who knew someone who
knew him.”
Smith Crossing resident
Margaret Yates volunteers
in Smith Crossing’s onsite
library for assisted
living residents. A retired
St. Xavier University professor,
she enjoys Renaissance
Corner Academy
classes, though she has not
facilitated a course.
“I signed up for a course
on Sherlock Holmes and
one on the history of jazz,”
she said. “I loved them.
They kept my mind busy
and active. They’re just
wonderful.”
Respecting choices, offering more: New Clarendale of Mokena is here
Can one really have it all?
It seems only fair that when
considering a retirement lifestyle,
one should be able to continue
to enjoy what makes life
special, but also have access to
new, exciting and enriching opportunities.
One can at Clarendale of Mokena,
the full-service retirement
community at 21536 S. Wolf
Road in Mokena.
Here, one will find a lifestyle
built on the belief that staying
connected to the people and
places one loves most is key to
living a healthy, rewarding life
— and it’s just as important in
retirement.
“Clarendale of Mokena offers
a common sense approach to retirement
living, one that respects
what you love about your current
lifestyle, while offering a new
and dynamic option for enriched
living,” said Bobbi Kelley, executive
director of Clarendale of
Mokena. “Staying part of mainstream
living is what we are all
about.”
Equally appealing about the
new retirement address is its
“village-type lifestyle,” embracing
characteristics that Mokenaarea
residents cherish, such as
feeling down-to-earth, unpretentious
and comfortable. Clarendale
is a choice that is welcoming
and friendly, with the added bonus
of services that make it easy
to enjoy a maintenance-free, relaxed
lifestyle.
“This is all-inclusive living
on a rental basis, with exceptional
services and amenities,”
Kelley said. “Have coffee in the
bistro, walk around the nearby
wetlands, sit by the fire pit and
reminisce, and relax knowing a
professional staff will take care
of everyday chores.”
Clarendale of Mokena’s convenient
location also helps residents
stay connected.
The community occupies 11.4
acres of open green space at
Wolf Road and Lincoln Highway.
The village downtown, Old
Plank Road Trail and the Hickory
Creek Preserve are all in close
proximity. The result is a sense
of belonging and active independence,
while inviting new options
for engagement.
“And those looking for beautiful
new residences that feature
today’s preferences for larger
floor plans with well-appointed
details will love what they find
here,” Kelley said. “Plus, there’s
the value of a simple monthly
service fee, with no substantial
entrance payment, and the peace
of mind knowing supportive services
of on-site assisted living
and memory care are available
should they ever be needed.”
TheraCORE: Treating patients to a healthy life
TheraCORE Physical
Therapy was opened in
2008 by two doctors of
physical therapy, Jen Bazan
and Amy Goebbert.
The goal at TheraCORE
is to treat our patients effectively,
using the most
up to date treatment techniques,
providing one–onone
care. When a patient
comes to TheraCORE for
treatment, they will be seeing
the same therapist every
time. TheraCORE are a
very manually-based company,
so its staff’s hands
will be on the patient in
order to mobilize the necessary
muscles and joints
and provide feedback to
the patient on appropriate
posture and technique.
The practice strongly
believe in the power of
self. It wants the patient
to know exactly why each
treatment technique is performed
during the physical
therapy session and how
the exercises prescribed
located in Five Seasons
Family Sports Club. All
proceeds from the event
will benefit Ronald Mc-
Donald House Charities
of Chicagoland and Northwest
Indiana. The triathlon
will consist of three timed
segments: 10 minute swim
(laps in an indoor pool),
20 minute bike (stationary
spin bikes) and 15 minute
run or walk (treadmill).
The controlled environment
is perfect for beginners,
while still a great
way to challenge the most
competitive.
New Year’s resolutions
for a healthier You
STATEPOINT MEDIA
New Year’s resolutions
can be a double-edged
sword. While many of us
feel inspired to make goals
to improve our health, happiness
and wellbeing, we
often find the changes hard
to sustain, and sometimes
end up reverting back to
old practices.
Check out these tips for
starting and maintaining a
healthier lifestyle.
Baby Steps
Many people start a new
year hoping to improve
their fitness routines and
eating habits, and quickly
become discouraged when
results aren’t immediate.
Instead of cancelling your
new gym membership and
opting for a box of chocolates
by Valentine’s Day,
set achievable and realistic
goals to stay on track.
If losing weight is the
objective, aim for 10
pounds instead of 50. If
you succeed at losing the
first 10, celebrate and
make a new goal.
Instead of adopting an
extreme diet, cut back
on one snack a day or incorporate
a smoothie as a
healthy meal replacement.
Use ingredients like fresh
fruit, dark leafy greens,
flax or chia seeds -- even
savory vegetables like
beets -- the possibilities
are endless.
Fuel Up to Get Fit
Sticking to fitness goals
takes the right fuel. Eating
whole foods instead of
processed foods will give
you more and longer-lasting
energy. Plus, a wholefood
diet is more simple
and sustainable than restrictive
calorie counting
or elimination diets.
Powering your body
with snacks like low-fat
yogurt topped with granola,
fresh hummus and
whole-grain pita, or an apple
and peanut butter, will
carry your body through
a workout and help you
feel fuller longer. To make
delicious homemade nut
butter, throw three cups of
roasted, unsalted peanuts
or cashews into a highpowered
blender like a Vitamix
machine and blend
for a minute or so. The
result is a gooey, good-foryou
treat that will provide
ample energy for healthy
pursuits.
While grocery shopping,
stick to the outer perimeter
of the store and pick up
nutrient-rich and versatile
ingredients like avocados,
chickpeas, bananas, nuts
and spinach, that can stand
alone or be mixed into everything
from healthy salads
to frozen desserts.
Indulge Your Sweet Tooth
Being healthy and eating
whole foods doesn’t
mean you have to sacrifice
your sweet tooth. Before
you plunge into a tub of
cookie dough, consider
other ways to curb cravings.
Make your own, customized
whole-food ice
cream without artificial
colors, flavors or preservatives
using a blender.
Varieties like apple pie and
spiced strawberry will delight
without guilt.
Or try a simple sorbet:
blend two peeled oranges,
two tablespoons sugar
and four cups of ice. Use
a blender with special settings
for this purpose, such
as the Vitamix Professional
Series 750. Its Frozen
Dessert program, one
of the machine’s five preprogrammed
settings, allows
you to make an easy,
healthy dessert in minutes.
Looking for something
that feels even more decadent?
Find recipes like
chocolate hazelnut spread
and more at vitamix.com/
Find-Recipes.
For a healthier new year,
focus on small, attainable
goals, and use whole foods
to get creative with your
diet.

Why hiring a personal trainer is worth it
It’s a question Kasia
Topor is often asked. As
the owner of ProCoreFitness
in New Lenox, and
a personal trainer, Kasia
fields countless inquiries,
but this is her favorite.
“People ask: Why can’t
I just work out on my
own? Does it make a difference?”
Topor said.
Yes, it makes a big difference.
Here’s why:
Motivation: Many people
start a fitness regime
with a lot of enthusiasm,
but as their motivation
wanes, so does their success.
“A personal trainer is
like a personal cheerleader,”
said Topor. “We are
here to encourage you,
applaud your accomplishments
and give you a pep
talk when needed.”
Accountability: It’s
easy to sleep in and ignore
that workout you had
planned to do, but when
you have an appointment
with a trainer, there are no
excuses. The more you
show up, the more success
you will see.
Professional Advice:
Fitness goes beyond the
gym, which is why Kasia
and her team of trainers
dispense more than workout
advice.
“Everyone has different
lifestyles and needs,”
Topor said. “We get to
know our clients to help
them get the results they
want.”
Whether you are a workout
warrior or just starting
out, ProCoreFitness has
four experienced trainers
Cancer gone after treatment at Silver
Cross Advanced Endoscopy Center
Jim Salerno had chronic heartburn
that just wouldn’t go away. His doctor
referred him to an expert in digestive diseases
to see if there was something more
serious going on. There was.
While performing an upper endoscopy,
Dr. Kamran Ayub, medical director of the
Advanced Endoscopy Center at Silver
Cross Hospital, suspected the 69-yearold
New Lenox man had gastroesophageal
reflux disease or GERD and Barrett’s
esophagus, a serious complication
brought on by chronic heartburn along
with years of smoking. But that wasn’t
all. Dr. Ayub also found a small nodule in
the esophagus, that he suspected was carcinoma
esophagus.
“In Barrett’s esophagus, normal tissue
lining the esophagus — the tube that carries
food from the mouth to the stomach
changes to tissue that resembles the lining
of the intestine,” Dr. Ayub said. “About
10 percent of people with chronic symptoms
of GERD develop Barrett’s esophagus.
However, if left untreated, it can lead
to esophageal adenocarcinoma, which is
a serious, potentially fatal cancer of the
esophagus.”
The biopsy confirmed Dr. Ayub’s suspicions.
Salerno did indeed have esophageal
cancer. In December 2015, Dr. Ayub
took Salerno back to Silver Cross Hospital
where he removed the cancerous cells
from Salerno’s esophagus, performing a
special procedure called endoscopic resection.
“Fortunately, we caught it early and
I was able to resect the tumor using advanced
endoscopy techniques,” he said.
While Salerno was under sedation, Dr.
Ayub also treated the Barrett’s esophagus
using radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
therapy to minimize the risk of the cancer
returning in the future. He inserted a
Dr. Kamran Ayub
device called the HALO System inside a
thin flexible tube through Salerno’s mouth
into his esophagus. The HALO delivered
a controlled level of radiofrequency energy
and power to remove a thin layer of
diseased tissue. Less than one second of
energy removes tissue to a depth of about
one millimeter.
“Endoscopic ablation with RFA allows
me to provide a controlled amount of heat
to the diseased tissue which in turn minimizes
any injury to healthy esophagus
tissue,” Dr. Ayub said. “Once the tissue
is removed, normal healthy tissue grows
within three to four weeks.”
Since then, Salerno had two more outpatient
endoscopies with biopsy to make
sure that the cancer and effects of Barrett’s
esophagus has not returned. Today,
Salerno remains cancer-free.
More than 20 million Americans experience
chronic heartburn or GERD. Of
these, between 1 million and 2 million develop
Barrett’s esophagus.
Vitality helps local woman live healthier
Trying to lose weight
is frustrating. It’s a vicious
pattern of ups and
downs that seem to result
in a never-ending cycle of
euphoria and depression.
This is not healthy, mentally,
physically, or emotionally.
It’s not good for
a person — so why do we
keep using the same tricks
and expecting different results?
Tiffanee Fouts was a
lifelong dieter stuck in the
same routine of serial dieting
that many Americans
are experiencing today.
She kept moving on from
one program to the next,
hoping this time was going
to finally be the time she
would lose the weight. She
would work hard to lose
3-5 pounds in a month,
and then blow it on a bad
weekend.
“I was getting tired of
the constant feeling of failure.
I kept blaming myself
for not being able to lose
the weight I wanted to,”
said Fouts, a New Lenox
native and recent college
graduate. “I went to Vitality
as a last resort, hoping
that maybe it would be
the program that actually
worked for me.”
And it did. Fouts is
down 70 pounds in less
than a year. She has experienced
improvements in
sleeping patterns, energy
level, cellular hydration,
and her overall outlook on
life.
When asked why she
thought Vitality worked
for her when all of these
other programs failed, she
said, “Vitality is personalized
to me.”
“I don’t have the same
program as my mom,
dad, or sister,” Fouts said.
“The health coaches there
walked me (sometimes
dragged me) through my
program. They explained
to me why I was eating
the foods I was eating, and
why the ‘diet foods’ I was
previously feeding myself
were actually helping me
gain weight. It made sense
to me. For the first time in
my life I knew that I could
achieve my goals.”
Vitality Health Systems
is helping people like
Fouts achieve their weight
loss goals without drugs,
surgery, hormones, and
prepackaged foods. This is
all possible because of the
breakthrough technology
of NutriMost.
The Vitality team strives
daily to realize their vision
of a happier, healthier, fullof-life
community with
less sickness, less disease,
and less suffering; where
children are healthier, families
are happier, and marriages
and relationships
are enriched.
Ingalls patient is second in world to enroll in
immunotherapy study for advanced colon cancer
Michelle Burnett of Palos Heights recently
became the second person in the
world to enroll in a breakthrough research
study that uses immunotherapy to tap into
the body’s own ability to fight advanced
colorectal cancer.
And it happened right here at Ingalls
Cancer Care.
Approximately 360 patients in all will
take part in this worldwide Phase III study
sponsored by F. Hoffman-La Roche Ltd.
Ingalls is the only hospital in Illinois –
and one of only a few in the Midwest –
to offer the trial. As a result, people from
neighboring states routinely contact Ingalls
Cancer Research about it.
A number of patients have already been
enrolled since it debuted in the summer,
and most are tolerating the treatment well.
For 56-year-old Burnett, that is nothing
short of a miracle.
Previous chemotherapy treatments
from her seven-year battle with advanced
colon cancer left her debilitated, fatigued
and unable to drive. When her cancer
spread to her lymph nodes in 2015, Burnett’s
doctors told her she was out of options
– and out of time.
But that all changed when she came to
Ingalls Cancer Care at a friend’s recommendation.
“When you’re given a diagnosis like I
was, you want to find a really good place
to go,” she said. “As soon as I stepped
into Ingalls, I knew it was where I should
do my treatment.”
Unfortunately, her body didn’t react
well to the powerful chemotherapy treatments
she initially received, and she had
to stop them.
“Thank God, the doctors at Ingalls are
involved in clinical trials,” she adds. “I
was absolutely non-functional. I couldn’t
drive my car; I was hospitalized for pain
because the disease was worsening, and
the chemotherapy wasn’t working for
me.”
That’s when Mark Kozloff M.D., Medical
Director of Ingalls Cancer Care, and
cancer research nurse Joy Vlamakis,
R.N., told her about the new study at Ingalls.
The difference in Burnett after just
four treatments was like “night and day.”
“I remember calling Joy and saying,
‘Oh my God, I feel like normal,’” she
said. “This was the first time in a year and
a half that I felt so good because of these
treatments. The real miracle came when
I had my scan done after four treatments
and found out that not only did my disease
improve overall by 36 percent, but
that one of the tumors in my liver completely
disappeared. That’s why I wanted
to go to Ingalls, and that’s what they can
accomplish for you.”
About the Study
The Phase III clinical trial
(NCT02788279) is studying three different
chemotherapy regimens –regorafenib,
the standard treatment, to cobimetinib
plus atezolizumab and atezolizumab
monotherapy. At the American Society
of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting
in Chicago in June, researchers reported
that the combination of cobimetinib and
atezolizumab was well tolerated and demonstrated
promising results.
To enroll in the study, participants must
be at least 18 years of age, have locally
advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer,
and have had at least two previous rounds
of chemotherapy.
“Colorectal cancer was once considered
unresponsive to immunotherapy,”
Dr. Kozloff said. “The immune system
is the body’s natural defense against disease,
but cancer cells have a way of inhibiting
the immune system. Immunotherapy
agents help unleash the immune system’s
potential to fight them off in certain types
of cancer.
“These are the hot drugs in cancer care
right now,” he said. “And I’m proud to
say we’ve been investigating and using
these treatments at Ingalls for several
years now.”
Ingalls currently offers immunotherapy
treatments for malignant melanoma, certain
types of lung cancer, and kidney cancer,
and is investigating immunotherapy
agents to treat esophageal and gastrointestinal/stomach
cancers.
Orangetheory transforms bodies
through science, interval training
Coming in February
There’s a new fitness
option in town and it’s
completely backed by science.
Orangetheory Fitness
Frankfort recently
opened it’s doors and there
is no denying that body
transformations are taking
place.
At Orangetheory, members
move through three
different stations around
the studio: treadmill running,
rowing and weight
training. In most classes,
they can expect to spend
half the time on the treadmill
running intervals at
different speeds and inclines.
For the weight lifting
portion of class, personal
stations are set up
with all the weights, medicine
balls, steps and TRX
straps needed to complete
the block. An instructor
demonstrates the exercises,
but video played on
overhead TV screens also
depict the moves, showing
how many reps to do
per set. The dual guidance
aims to take the guessing
game out of what to do
next when members space
out or lose count while exercising.
“It’s 100 percent fullbody
in nature,” Morgan
Curry (aka Coach Mo),
Orangetheory fitness
Frankfort’s Head Coach,
said. “It’s weight and resistance
training, it’s core
exercise, its high cardio,
it’s rowing — it’s as much
as we can do in over the
course of an hour to keep
you moving.”
To optimize fat burning,
members wear heart
rate monitors during the
workout. The 60-minute
interval-based class is designed
to help their heart
rates reach the target “orange”
zone for at least 12
to 20 minutes.
“When you’re doing
things in an intervallic
way and taking yourself up
to a higher level of cardio,
we call it the anaerobic
threshold— where it gets
to be 84 or 85 percent of
your maximum heart rate.
That’s what we call the orange
zone,” Curry said.
Getting in the orange
zone produces what exercise
scientists call the
“EPOC” effect, excess
post-exercise oxygen consumption—
known as the
afterburn.
“EPOC occurs when
our bodies require excess
oxygen after a workout in
order to return ourselves
to our normal physiologic
steady state,” Curry said.
“The best way to think of
EPOC is a way for your
body to pay off an ‘oxygen
debt’ after an intense
workout. This is why our
bodies are able to burn
more calories after working
out.”
Besides the extra calorie
boost from EPOC, research
continues to suggest
the health benefits of
interval training.
A study published in the
April 2016 edition of the
journal PLOS One found
as little as one minute of
intensive exercise had the
same endurance, muscle
function and insulin resistance
benefits as a 45-minute
continuous workout at
the same pace.
“Our members like
watching their heart rates
progress on the overhead
TV screens can help keep
members motivated,” Coowner
Adryenne Hearne-
Alvarez said.
“They like the fact that
they can see their names
on a monitor,” Hearne-
Alvarez said. “Our members
like to see where they
stand. When there in a
gray zone, they know they
need to push a little harder,
so there’s a lot of accountability.”
Hearne-Alvarez said the
fitness coaches help keep
the members on track
The company said its
sweat session can burn
up to 1,000 calories, and
many of its members can
attest to the regimen’s results.
Seven ways to get fit as a family this year
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Healthy eating habits and gym
routines can be hard to keep up
after the excitement of the holidays
fizzle. For parents who juggle
busy schedules, it can be particularly
challenging to squeeze
in the recommended amount of
physical activity each day.
However, with a little motivation
and a dose of creativity,
families can resolve to stay active
and get fit together -- without
stepping foot into the gym.
Here are seven ideas to consider:
1. Explore the neighborhood.
Take the children on
regular strolls around the block.
Create your own nature walks
by identifying different insects,
leaves and animals along the
way. Collect pinecones, acorns
or other foliage that can be used
for fun crafts back at the house.
2. Take advantage of local
parks. Visit a local park to discover
different walking paths or
bike trails. And spend some time
on the playground while you’re
at it! Equipment, such as monkey
bars, climbing walls and balance
beams are all fun ways to
get moving.
3. Invest in gear without
breaking the bank. Athletic
clothes and accessories with the
latest performance fabrics enhance
comfort and safety while
working out. What’s more, new
gear can be a great way for each
family member to show his or
her sense of style, which can be
just the motivation needed to get
moving.
Footwear is especially important
to replace often, as worn
out athletic shoes can increase
risk of injury. To go easy on the
wallet, consider shopping at retailers
like Rack Room Shoes,
which offers everyday value on
brands for the entire family. For
more information, visit Rack-
RoomShoes.com.
4. Schedule dance parties.
Enjoy music and shake off some
stress by scheduling regular
dance parties after school, during
commercial breaks or before
bedtime.
5. Make a game out of
chores. Make the most of family
chores. Shoveling snow, raking
leaves and mowing the grass
don’t just enhance your home’s
curb appeal; they are all great
forms of exercise!
6. Get in a routine. A routine
ensures consistency. Set aside
time each week for bike rides,
tag football and soccer games,
all of which can all be done in
the neighborhood, backyard or at
a favorite park. In bad weather,
head to a local trampoline park,
climbing gym or indoor soccer
field.
7. Make a Matrix. Planning
fun activities increases the
chance you will keep up the
good work. For those who love
to check items off a list, a colorcoded
spreadsheet can be a fun
visual reminder to test out new
activities. Hang this in a common
area, such as the kitchen, to
keep track.
Once you’ve got the plan in
place, get into a fitness routine
that works for your family and
stick with it!
Don't Let Your
If your dryer takes longer than one
may have a fire hazard in your vent.
Installation Alteration Repair
AFTER
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Hidden buildup in
clothes dryer vent
is fire hazard
Most people know they
need to clean their dryer
lint tray between each cycle,
but what lurks behind
the wall is just as important
for safety and avoiding fire
traps, as well as fully efficient
dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger, owner
of Dryer Vent Wizard,
opened his New Lenoxbased
business in 2009.
Lint is the villain - lint
that has been allowed to
build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent.
It is estimated by the
U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and
the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually. These fires
account for an average of
20 deaths, 370 injuries and
more than $88 million in
property damage. “Failure
to clean the dryer vent”
was the leading factor cited
in U.S. Fire Administration
reports.
“It is something very
few people know about or
think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company
specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration
and installation. “It is
the leading cause of dryer
fires.”
Lint accumulation also
can cause dryers to stop
working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent
clogged with lint can add
as much as $18 to $24 per
month to energy costs.
“Improper venting causes
problems, as well,” he said.
“The dryer exhaust duct and
connections should be made
of rigid metal or semi-rigid
metal and secured with metal
heat-resistant tape rather
than duct tape. I often find
plastic or foil accordiontype
material, which can
easily trap lint and is more
susceptible to kinks and
crushing.”
Warning signs include:
• Clothes are taking
more than one cycle to dry,
especially jeans & towels.
• No lint visible on lint
screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops
during a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy
smell after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after
a dry cycle.
• The top of your dryer
hot to the touch while running.
• There’s excess lint left
on your clothing.
“This has been a consumer
education process,
but it’s hard to get the
word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t call until
they have a serious problem
with their dryer.”
He suggests people
treat clothes dryers as a
household item in need of
regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer
performance and promote
safety by cleaning the lint
screen between each use,
ensuring the connection
between the dryer and
wall is made of compliant
material and remains
un-kinked, and having the
dryer exhaust duct cleaned
regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection
and cleaning at least
annually.
Now is a great time to
have an inspection and
cleaning of clothes dryers
and dryer vent systems.
Another important tip:
never let your clothes dryer
run when you are out of
the house or asleep.
The consequences of hearing loss
Many people are aware
that their hearing has deteriorated
but are reluctant to
seek help. Perhaps they do
not want to acknowledge
the problem, are embarrassed
by what they see as
a weakness, or believe that
they can “get by” without
using a hearing aid. And,
unfortunately, too many
wait years, even decades,
to address the effects of
hearing loss before getting
treatment.
But time and again, research
demonstrates the
considerable effects of
hearing loss on development
as well as negative
social, psychological,
cognitive and health effects
of untreated hearing
loss. Each can have farreaching
implications that
go well beyond hearing
alone. In fact, those who
have difficulty hearing can
experience such distorted
and incomplete communication
that it seriously
impacts their professional
and personal lives, at times
leading to isolation and
withdrawal.
The effects of untreated
hearing loss
Studies have linked untreated
hearing loss effects
to: irritability, negativism
and anger, fatigue, tension,
stress and depression
avoidance or withdrawal
from social situations, social
rejection and loneliness,
reduced alertness and
increased risk to personal
safety, impaired memory
and ability to learn new
tasks, reduced job performance
and earning power,
diminished psychological,
and overall health.
Hearing loss is not just
an ailment of old age. It
can strike at any time and
any age, even childhood.
For the young, even a mild
or moderate case of hearing
loss could bring difficulty
learning, developing
speech and building the
important interpersonal
skills necessary to foster
self-esteem and succeed in
school and life.
At South Suburban
Hearing Health Center, the
mission is to help educate
the public about hearing
loss, and promote the importance
of prevention
and treatment. On their
website, interested parties
will find basic information
about hearing loss, including
advances in diagnosis
and treatment, a review of
different hearing aids, and
resources for medical care
and financial assistance.
For those who think they
or a loved one suffers from
hearing loss, do not delay
another day. Anyone can
visit the professionals at
South Suburban Hearing
Health Center and take the
first step toward a world of
better hearing.
Local dentist serves victims of violence
For Dr. Lena Halikias, dentistry goes
far beyond a regular checkup and the occasional
filling.
She believes that going to the dentist
and receiving oral care should be a comfortable
experience for the patient, and
one that looks at the whole picture when
considering patients’ options. Your smile
is your fingerprint - truly and uniquely
you. Everything done at Perfect Smiles is
It blends the team, the tools and advanced
technologies to deliver leading cutting
edge dentistry.
Dr. Halikias is part of a team of seven
specialists behind the practice Perfect
Smiles, which recently opened its doors
in Frankfort.
Perfect Smiles is unique in its approach
to oral care because it’s a multispecialty
practice.
Patients are not referred from specialist
to specialist to receive the appropriate
treatment or preventative care. Instead,
the Perfect Smiles experts can provide
general dentistry, periodontic, endodontic,
orthodontic, oral surgery and implant
services for the patient within the same
practice.
Imagine your total dental needs cared
for in one central place: general, surgical
and cosmetic.
Imagine no longer bouncing from appointment
to appointment. At Perfect
Smiles, the team will review your case at
one common table, sharing the same set
of current diagnostics and each enhancing
your care plan. Our team of elite professionals
will rotate within the offices.
Perfect Smiles opened its Frankfort location
in July, but Perfect Smiles is also in
Oak Forest, Palos Park, Champaign and
Elmhurst.
There is a strong sense of community
ingrained in the work that Dr. Halikias
and the other specialists at Perfect Smiles
do. Their comprehensive approach to oral
care is part of their commitment to give
patients healthy and beautiful smiles, so
they put forth an effort to make these services
accessible to the community.
Dr. Halikias also participates in the
Give Back a Smile, a program under the
American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
that provides free care to victims of
domestic and sexual violence by restoring
their smiles.
“I was a victim of domestic violence
and I was passionate about cosmetic dentistry,”
Dr. Halikias said. “I have taken
care of quite a few victims that way, so
I thought I should give back in my own
community.”
Seven years ago, Dr. Halikias founded
the Chicago Smile Foundation, an organization
that provides free dental care
to women in local shelters so they can
have an easier time getting back to work.
If these women have children, Chicago
Smile Foundation will give them care free
of charge as well.
You’re calm, content and confident,
knowing this will be no common visit.
The service you will receive at any of its
five privately-owned practices and associated,
where an ideal fusion of talent
Undiagnosed thyroid
dysfunction causes weight
gain, depression
Research suggests
there is an estimated 20
million cases of undiagnosed
hypothyroidism
in the U.S., a chronic
condition that causes
abnormal production of
thyroid hormones affecting
the body’s metabolic
processes.
Researchers regard a
lack of comprehensive
testing in mainstream
medical practices as one
of the main culprits to so
many being undiagnosed.
“Traditional medical
approaches to thyroid
conditions are over 50
years old,” said Dr. Stephen
Beyer. “It only recognizes
one type of thyroid
malfunction, when
in actuality there are 24
specific ways the thyroid
can be dysfunctional. In
most instances, individuals
seeking treatment are
receiving outdated care
and are not being diagnosed
properly.”
Through advancements
in medical understanding
and approaches, most
thyroid problems can be
managed well if properly
diagnosed and treated. A
lot of times this can be
done naturally, without
any harmful drugs or side
effects.
Diagnosed with a lowfunctioning
thyroid condition
at the age of 18,
Corey suffered from insomnia,
weight gain, depression
and moodiness
for over a decade before
finding relief with a natural,
functional medicine
“Traditional medical approaches
to thyroid conditions are over
50 years old”
Dr. Stephen Beyer
Beyer.
“For years, I felt like
there was a film over
my eyes and life,” Corey
said. “Ever since this new
treatment, that film has
been lifted. The weight
started falling right off, I
slept better, and the pressure
was gone – It’s been
life changing.”
When asked what
makes his methods so
different from general
procedures, Dr. Beyer
attributes research advancements,
new methods
and a more natural,
functional approach.
“What we do is
unique,” Dr. Beyer said.
“We do proper testing —
not guessing — to find
out what is really going
on with your body. Then
we focus on fixing the
cause, not covering the
symptoms.”
The difference? Proper
testing and a very powerful
functional medicine
approach in the treatment
of thyroid conditions.
This approach has given
relief to many who have
suffered for years under
the traditional drug/hormone
approach.
Alice suffered from a
variety of symptoms including
weight gain, fatigue,
vertigo, and brain
fog. She started seeing
results immediately after
seeking treatment at Beyer
Chiropractic Center in
Frankfort.
“My kids are excited
to have their mom back,”
Alice said. “My husband
is excited to have his wife
back, and I’m excited to
have my life back. And it
was all done in a 16 week
program.”
Common symptoms
of thyroid conditions include:
Fatigue, difficulty
managing weight gain/
loss, cold hands and/or
feet, heart palpitations,
difficult or infrequent
bowel movements, depression,
insomnia, lack
of motivation, night
sweats, mental sluggishness,
thinning hair/ hair
falling out, and dryness
of skin and/or scalp.
