The plains of Bagan at dawn
are a mystical sight, with
sunrays shining through
mist-shrouded temples.
There are over 2,000
Buddhist sites in this area,
with Ananda temple being
the finest. Those wishing to
fly by balloon will need an
early start, as take off is
at sunrise.
Sandamuni Pagoda is surrounded
by lots of smaller stupas. The
stupa has an important meaning
in Buddhism, where the shape
represents Buddha sitting in
meditation on a lion throne.
Bagan has full moon festivals that
rotate through the major temples,
during which you can see people
launching lanterns into the sky.
And if you’re lucky, they’ll include
the larger fire lanterns. The most
accessible is the Ananda Pagoda
festival in early January.
