7SEVEN
STRATEGIES FOR
HIGHLY EFFECTIVE
NEW YEAR’S
RESOLUTIONS
New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. It’s likely that at least one person will ask you what your resolutions are for the year
ahead. Whether you like to make them or not, research has found that people who make resolutions are 10 times more likely
to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. Yet as you know, it’s not so easy to keep your resolve as
life returns to normal and your old habits of mind and action start testing your resolve and pulling you away from the new ones
you resolved to create. Change is difficult, yet as hard as it is, everyone has the ability to make and keep meaningful changes in
their life, regardless of their age, or how well worn their habitual ways of engaging in the world.
Indeed there’s a science to success when it comes to achieving goals and making life changes - whether on January 1 st or
any other time of year. Below are 7 strategies to help you make the changes you want in the year ahead - including making
the right resolutions to begin with. I hope you will read it, but more so, I hope you will apply them so that 2017 will truly be
the best year of your life. Not because everything will go as you want, but because you be firmly at the helm of your own life
- living by design rather than by default.
1. Know Your Why. For a resolution to stick, it has to be aligned with your core values. We all want to look better or get richer,
but your resolutions have to go beyond superficial desires and connect with what truly matters most to you. In other words,
you have to “Know your why” and feel truly passionate about the goals you set for yourself. If you don’t, then when the going
gets tough or your alarm goes off at 5:30 AM, you won’t have the resolve to stick to your plan. Connect your resolutions to
those things that give you a deeper sense of purpose and align with your core values. When your resolutions connect to a deeper sense of purpose, it
compels you not to think small or play safe, but to dig deep and stay the course when the going gets tough - no matter how many hurdles.
2. Be Specific. Resolutions to ‘eat better, get fitter, be happier, relax more or have better life balance’ are doomed for failure because they lack specificity.
The more specific you are, the more likely you will be able to succeed. Describe your goals and resolutions in ways that allow you to track your progress
and measure your success. For instance, if you want to build a better relationship with your partner, schedule at least one date night per month or, as
I’ve done with my husband, one weekend away - sans kids - per year. Likewise, if you’re committed to a better health and exercise regime, schedule how
many workouts you’ll fit into each week.
3. Don’t Just Think It, Ink it! A Stanford University study found that when people wrote down their goal, it increased the probability of them achieving it
by over 70%. But don’t just write down the specific goal, write down how you will feel when you’ve accomplished it. When you have finished penning your
desires, jot down on sticky pads the words that inspire you most about your goal and put them around your home/office to remind you of why you are
committed to doing what it takes to bring your goal into reality.
Towne Lake | January 2017 3
4. Design Your Environment. Never underestimate the power of
your environment to support or sabotage your success. Design
your environment so that it’s hard NOT to do what you resolved.
Create a progress chart, recruit a cheer squad among your family
and friends, find someone to hold you accountable, hire a trainer,
join a group, create a blog. Likewise, if there are people or things in
your life that pull you down or off track, address them directly and
set whatever boundaries you know you will need up front.
5. Narrow Your Efforts. Trying to do too many things at once
can make you so unfocused that you just bounce around like
Tigger on Red Bull, not quite sure which direction you are going.
Set yourself up for success and start with JUST ONE MAJOR
UNDERTAKING come January 1 st . Then break that goal down
into small bite size steps. Small steps, strong start!
6. Focus On The Process. It’s easy to get caught up in an initial
wave of enthusiasm, only to come crashing down when your
initial efforts don’t produce immediate and amazing results. So
focus on the process itself and develop greater competence of the
actual activity, habit or skill you want to acquire. For instance, if
you want to become more fit, focus on being able to jog a little bit
further every time you go for a walk, rather than being able to run
5 miles within a week. PERSISTENCE ALWAYS PAYS OFF.
7. Forgive Your Failures. Your setbacks and failures will not
define your success in the year ahead or any year. HOW YOU
RESPOND WILL. If you happen to mess up, lose your resolve,
press the snooze button or revert to a familiar well-practiced
behavior, don’t beat up on yourself. Okay, so you didn’t get to
the gym like you’d planned. How about 5 minutes of stretching?
When it comes to slipping up and tripping up, you are in good
company. It happens to everyone. Just don’t let your mishaps,
setbacks and failures mean more than they do. Reflect on the
lessons they hold, make adjustments accordingly, then tap your
inner John Wayne and get back in the saddle. Life rewards those
who work at it.
JANUARY IS NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH
One in three young people will grow up without having a mentor - either through
a formal mentoring program or informally through a family friend or community
member - leaving them disconnected from a critical resource to help with these very
things.
Before becoming a mentor, here are a few things to understand about the role of
mentoring. Most of us have had a teacher, supervisor or coach who has been a
mentor to us and made a positive difference in our lives. Those people wore many
hats, acting as delegators, role models, cheerleaders, policy enforcers, advocates
and friends. Mentors assume these different roles during the course of a relationship
and share some basic qualities:
• A sincere desire to be involved with a young person
• Respect for young people
• Active listening skills
• Empathy
• Ability to see solutions and opportunities
• Flexibility
Mentoring relationships are a shared opportunity for learning and growth. Many
mentors say that the rewards they gain are as substantial as those for their mentees
and that mentoring has enabled them to:
• Have fun
• Achieve personal growth and learn more about themselves
• Improve their self-esteem and feel they are making a difference
• Gain a better understanding of other cultures and develop a greater appreciation
for diversity
• Feel more productive and have a better attitude at work
• Enhance their relationships with their own children
Above all, a good mentor is willing to take the time to get to know their mentee, to
learn new things that are important to the young person and even to be changed by
their relationship. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, there are a variety of
places that are in need. Seek out non-profit organizations, your local school district,
college or university, within your family, church groups, even community groups
such as your local chamber of commerce. Chances are great that most of these have
a mentor program and need more volunteers.
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to
help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with handson
community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.
Board Certified in Family Medicine
DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary
foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting
adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all
medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term
commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all
you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally.
If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets
are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative),
then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like
the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the
friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster
homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life
and consider fostering today!
Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org and
a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information you
need!
Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.org and
START THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW
BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats
hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to large
dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from. We are a
foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to commit to
adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster families.
Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster families
socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so
you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal
like your own and train him/her, if possible. Although you may feel sadness
when your foster animal is adopted, please know that your efforts helped
to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever home. Visit Loving Arms Pet
Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit us at
Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529 each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.
CYPRESS CALLING MINISTRIES BUNCO FOR BABIES
How about a fun night with some girls for a good cause? Cypress Calling
Ministries (a non-profit corporation that helps mothers in need) is hosting
Bunco for Babies in your neighborhood. Instead of entrance fee, bring a
new $10 baby item (such as a pack of sleepers or blankets). Each month
will have a new baby item theme. Even though there will be no collection
of money, awesome prizes will still be given. Don’t know how to play
Bunco? No problem! It is a simple and easy to learn game that you will
become addicted to! To find out more please email CCM at jsimpson@
cypresscalling.com or come check out our website www.cypresscalling.
com for more info. If you are already part of a Bunco group and would
consider playing twice a year for Bunco for Babies, we would love to talk
to you about how this works. It is a great way for your group to give back
to the community.
