İznik Hagias Sophia Church and

Green Mosque

İznik is a very important religious centre for Christians. The first

council on which Christians’ main principles were determined

convened in Senatus Court of İznik with 228 patriarchs in the

year of 325. The argument which is still believed; “Jesus is the

son of the God”, was accepted in İznik after long discussions.

20 articles, which are known as Christian Feast days and İznik

Laws, were accepted after this council. Therefore, İznik was

announced as third sacred place after Kudus and Vatican

at the 19th council, which had met in Vatican in 1962. The

Hagias Sophia Church that VII. Council had met, in İznik, is

accepted as a sacred place for both Christians and Muslims

as Green Mosque that takes its name from its green ceramics

and bricked minarets.

Trilye Jesus Church or Fatih Mosque

Trilye has been a very important belief centre for Greek-

Orthodox Christians. Isa Church (its original name is Hagios

Stephanos) was established in Trilye in the year of A.D. 720-

730. It is the oldest Byzantine structure that could keep its

authentic structure up to the present. The Church was turned

into a mosque with the name of Fatih Mosque in 1560 after

Turks took Trilye. There were seven churches, three monasteries

and three Ayazma (sacred spring) from Greek Time in

Zeytinbağı, but only three of them are still kept. Panagia

Pontobasilissa or its other name, as known by people; Kemerli

church, is the first church that its walls were painted. There are

laminar paintings on the walls of this church and this church is

still very important for Christian People.

Mayor Synagogue

It was built by Seferad Jewish People, who came from

Spain’s Majorca Island to Ottoman Esquire as refugee in

15th Century. They gave name of “Mayor” to the synagogue

because their island’s name was Majorca. Synagogue, which

is on Sakarya Street, is square planned and adorned with

pen motifs which are designed in different colours. Mayor

Synagogue, which was open for praying until 1975, was

restored in 2004 and started giving service as a culture

centre. Fixing and restoration works started in 1998 and it

reopened for praying in 2001. Praying was done in Mayor

Synagogue in winters because it was small and heated

easily; the praying was done in Geruş Synagogue in the

summers. It has been open as a culture centre since 2004.
