As the inventor of the footbed with its functional, orthopedic core expertise, BIRKENSTOCK has
always stood for a healthy gait and stance. A subject that has long been close to our hearts:
the expansion from anatomically shaped footbeds into anatomically shaped beds. We want to
ensure that you not only lie as comfortably as possible, but that you also sleep as soundly as
possible thanks to BIRKENSTOCK sleep systems.
Special Supporting Function: BIRKENSTOCK Sleep Systems
An inspired idea – only one step ahead: just like the original BIRKENSTOCK footbeds, BIRKEN-
STOCK sleep systems also mold to the shape of the body. Our slatted frames and mattresses
adopt the form of the human body when lying down, and support it in a unique way: ideal
conditions for restful sleep. The BIRKENSTOCK sleep systems include yet another highlight:
our mattresses have a newly-developed cork-latex layer.
The BIRKENSTOCK Layer Made of Natural Latex with Cork Granulate
This cork-latex layer is found, or rather experienced, in all BIRKENSTOCK mattresses. Together
with the mattress cores and slatted frames, it ensures perfectly balanced comfort when lying
down, as it makes the necessary fine adjustments to the body and quickly returns to its
original shape once the weight is removed. The difference between lying on a latex layer with
cork granulate can be felt clearly: The BIRKENSTOCK layer made of cork-latex has a
particularly homogeneous foam structure and increased surface elasticity thanks to the manufacturing
process. At the same time, the gentle cushioning property also conforms to the body.
BIRKENSTOCK Sleep Systems: The Slatted Frame Model
The specially developed slatted frame with waves that mold to the contours of the body
forms a key part of our sleep systems. This wavy shape conforms to the natural contours
of our bodies and aims to improve pressure distribution and relieve the human body. Our
mattresses are a perfect match and mirror this wavy shape – both components lead to
exceptional comfort when lying down.
BIRKENSTOCK slatted frames and mattresses are also available in a straight shape. Sleep
culture is individual and varies widely – with diverse sleeping positions and countless
requirements. The range reaches from sensitive sleepers with zero tolerance for variations
through to those who appear to be very heavy sleepers regardless of the circumstances.
For this reason, the BIRKENSTOCK product range has been designed to be as comprehensive
as possible. All BIRKENSTOCK slatted frames have a high-quality solid frame made of
European beech, a rarity in today's market. The high weight-bearing capacity of this material
makes our slatted frames particularly durable and permanently elastic. In addition, the use
of high-quality and highly elastic plastic caps for the slats ensures a long working life.
A BIRKENSTOCK Highlight: Newly Developed Disc Spring Slatted Frames
To be better able to meet your individual requirements, the most extravagant BIRKENSTOCK
frame has been developed: the disc spring slatted frame with a disc coating with 50% natural
cork granulate. These discs provide higher elasticity in combination with flexible positioning.
The loose surface of the individual disc elements should also optimize contact with the mattress
and better dissipate any moisture that occurs.
BIRKENSTOCK Mattresses
Just like the slatted frames, wavy and straight mattresses also form part of the BIRKENSTOCK
range. Wave-shaped mattresses in conjunction with the body contour slatted frame form
the premium class of BIRKENSTOCK sleep systems and ensure that the mattress molds
specially to the body. This support can be felt clearly when lying down – exactly how a
foot also feels on our footbed in a shoe!
The Pocket Spring Mattress
With approx. 1,000 micro-pocket springs per surface area of 100 cm x 200 cm, the BIRKEN-
STOCK pocket spring mattress is one of the highest quality models of this type of mattress.
Such a high number of springs ensures a particularly high point elasticity and fine adjust-

ment: the mattress only yields at the point of the body weight. Moreover, it offers improved
ventilation, for example, good for sleepers who perspire a lot.
The Natural Latex Mattress
Natural latex – an exquisite material for mattresses, provides not only exceptional elasticity,
but also instantly returns to its original shape when pressure is removed. Latex is naturally
dust-mite resistant, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial.
Our mattresses also have an inner core made of natural rubber, which gently supports the
body but yet is still sufficiently firm. It belongs to the most natural type of mattress models
that are available on the market. In addition to the ecological aspects, latex also impresses
thanks to its natural structure that allows air circulation that prevents dampness, natural
springiness that cushions weight, and outstanding elasticity.
The Cold Foam Mattress
In comparison to a spring mattress, cold foam mattresses retain more heat and are particularly
suitable for people who tend to be cold at night. Furthermore, the low weight makes handling
easier. An innovative cold foam is used for the production of these mattresses, which
have improved pressure distribution in comparison to conventional mattresses thanks to
special components and a high proportion of natural castor oil – and the result is outstanding
comfort when lying down. The cushioning characteristics present in cold foam support
the body when lying down and relieve pressure from the spine. The combination with castor
oil also ensures that our cold foam has an improved ecological footprint and a very high air
permeability of 25 l/min, in contrast to 12 l/min for conventional cold foam.
BIRKENSTOCK Beds
The BIRKENSTOCK range of beds consists of four box spring beds and two insert variants.
Box spring beds are well-known for outstanding sleeping comfort and BIRKENSTOCK
demands high levels of well-being as well as healthy sleeping comfort. Due to the modular
structure, they can be adjusted to the user's individual requirements. The insert variants are
ideally suited for combination with the BIRKENSTOCK sleep systems and can also be combined
with the wave-shaped contour slatted frames as well as the straight variants.
Materials Used
During the manufacture of our beds and slatted frames, solid wood and the same sustainable
materials are used as in the production of BIRKENSTOCK sandals and shoes: natural cork,
latex, leather and fabric. Our woods exclusively come from controlled forestry in Central
Europe. Solid oak is used for all visible wood elements and European beech is used for the
frame and the frame slats. The wood used in BIRKENSTOCK sleep systems is processed
using natural oils.
The loden used in the Maine model, for example, consists of wool from the Tiroler Bergschaf
(Tyrolean mountain sheep) and is a pure, natural material. Such tear-resistant, high quality
loden is difficult to find today.
The Production
We found a partner in an Austrian premium furniture manufacturer who follows the same
philosophy as BIRKENSTOCK: exceptional quality, the best materials, and high functionality.
This family business from Styria stands for the highest level of quality and combines traditional
craftsmanship with modern production techniques. This manufacturer has produced
premium pieces of furniture from sustainable materials for centuries – and this now includes
BIRKENSTOCK sleep systems that are predominantly manufactured in the company's main
factory in the Styrian town of Anger.
Our products are not mass-produced, they are produced with a high manufactory proportion.
The assembly of the individual components is done by hand just like, for example, sewing
the thick leather headboards for the beds – no sewing machine could handle the 3 mm thick
leather. An employee requires eight hours for this special cobblers stitch with braided hemp
rope. The piping and leather tabs are finished using traditional craftsmanship. In short: the
vast majority of the manufacture of our sleep systems is done by hand.
