Local gyms helping area
residents achieve 2017 goals
Erin Redmond, Assistant Editor
“Oh my gosh, it’s burning,”
Courtney Brownly
said, lifting a weighted plate
above her head while doing
a pulse-up during an early
morning fitness class Jan. 5
at Challenge Fitness.
While temperatures were
in the single digits, Brownly
and countless other Lockport
and Homer Glen residents
were cranking up the
heat inside local gyms. For
fitness lovers and newcomers
alike, a new year brings
new opportunities to achieve
their fitness goals.
Brownly was one of only
a handful in the intimate
CXWORX by Les Mills
class, which sets choreographed
routines to upbeat
music. But the rest of the
Challenge Fitness gym, located
at 2021 S. Lawrence
Ave., Lockport, was abuzz.
Some members were lifting
weights, while others
hit the treadmill. Others still
were hitting balls on the tennis
court or getting in their
laps in the five-lane pool.
But all were there with the
goal of getting or staying in
shape.
“It’s like a family. You have
support from people and people
actually miss you when you don’t
come.”
Anita Kube — Challenge Fitness Les Mills instructor,
on the sense of camaraderie at the gym
“I could talk forever about
what we have; we try to have
something for everyone,”
Challenge Fitness Facility
Manager Ben Ragle said of
the 70,000-square foot complex,
noting they offer programs
for children as young
as 4 years old through seniors
ages 80 and older.
There is a feeling of community
at Challenge Fitness,
which is run by the Lockport
Park District. Anita Kube, a
certified Les Mills instructor
at the gym, said she has
worked at larger facilities in
the past and the difference
between the two is like night
and day.
“It’s like a family. You
have support from people
and people actually miss you
when you don’t come,” she
said. “I’ve worked at other
gyms before and you cannot
find this [feeling] anywhere.”
For those looking to kick
start their fitness, Kube also
leads classes such as yoga and
GRIT, which is high-intensity
interval training. But not all
the classes are as intense. The
gym’s menu also includes a
low-impact class and even a
“fun-loving” dance workout
called SH’BAM. Members
can also get one-on-one personal
training sessions for an
additional fee.
As an added incentive,
Challenge is running a special
to help make Lockport
residents healthier at the
start of the new year. The
enrollment fee — normally
$39 — is waived through
January.
City Council
Discussion of LTHS construction plans tabled
Council members
want explanation
from D205 about
previous project
Megann Horstead
Freelance Reporter
Recent Lockport City
Council action delayed plans
for construction and expansion
at Lockport Township
High School East Campus.
City officials voted 3-2 to
table the discussion of a special
use permit for the proposed
LTHS building expansion
at the Jan. 4 Committee
of the Whole Meeting. Second
Ward Alderman JR Gillogly
and Fourth Ward Alderman
Jim Petrakos were the
dissenting votes. First Ward
Alderman Kris Capadona,
Third Ward Alderman Jason
VanderMeer, and Fourth
Ward Alderman Robert Perretta
were absent.
Third Ward Alderman Darren
Deskin said he couldn’t
support the city in granting
the special use considering
the lack of cooperation they
had with the high school in
regard to a sidewalk project a
few months ago. Deskin made
the motion to table the discussion
until the next City Council
meeting Jan. 18, because
he would like a representative
from the school district to be
in attendance to speak about
the sidewalk issue.
New developments in
school zoning law signed
by Governor Bruce Rauner
in August of 2016 gives the
City of Lockport ability to
apply and enforce its zoning
regulations on schools. Officials
will also be required
to file a final development
plan.
“I just think it’s disingenuous
that we would go ahead
and they would even expect
us to go ahead and waive
any fees or reduce any fees,”
he said. “I’d like to have the
superintendent and/or the
school board president here,
at the next Committee of the
Whole meeting, to discuss
why it’s in the city’s best interest
to go ahead and waive
any fees, reduce any fees
with the lack of cooperation
we had with the superintendent
and the school board
just a few months ago.”
The City of Lockport recently
went to the Lockport
Township High School D205
Board of Education to offer
a solution to address resident
complaints regarding
the safety of children crossing
streets at the south end of
13th Street closer to Garfield
Avenue and Lincoln Street.
When Lockport officials
extended an offer to the high
school to pay for the sidewalks
through their 50/50
program, they were met with
a roadblock, City Administrator
Ben Benson said.
“We thought it would be
appropriate to offer that to
the high school,” he said.
“They deliberated it, but
they decided that ultimately,
it wasn’t… in their best
interest—I’m paraphrasing
here—to put school funding
towards safety measures that
they felt should be [paid for
by the] municipality.”
Peter Pontarelli, LEED
Green Associate for DLA
Architects, spoke on behalf
of the special use. He said
he wants it to be clear that
tabling the $9 million project
isn’t ideal.
“This project is kind of a
separate issue from the sidewalk,
and it is time-sensitive
in terms of the school year,
getting construction started,”
Pontarelli said.
Construction and expansion
plans at Lockport Township
High School East Campus
would add 7,500 square feet
for a multipurpose room and
another 19,700 square feet for
an 11 classroom addition.
The campus is currently
zoned as R-1 single family
residential, which makes it
a special use in accordance
with the city’s zoning ordinance.
Council action to approve
a special use permit will give
the State 90 days to consider
the measure, at which time
the timeline for the Lockport
high school project would be
further cemented.
Pontarelli said for the record,
parties involved in the
project have been working to
be good neighbors.
“We have had a precedence
of waiving building
permits for other governing
bodies in the community,” he
said. “We did it for the Lockport
Township Park District,
we’ve done it for the Lockport
Township facility on
Farrell Road.”
Lockport Township High
School Director of Facilities
Bill Thompson said, while he
won’t speak for others and
doesn’t know all the details
regarding the sidewalk issue,
the high school has been
a cooperative neighbor with
the city.
“I am aware of a few of
the projects that we just did
with the city over the last five
years,” he said. “We have cooperated,
we have donated
money, or split the costs for
the parking on Garfield Avenue,
for the bike path that’s
going to be on Farrell Road,
for the flooding that’s in the
subdivision by the golf course.
All three of those times we
split costs with the city.”
But that’s not the whole
story, Deskin said.
“However, the precedence
has always been with the
other governing bodies that
they will cooperate with us,”
he said. “In this instance a
few months ago, it was and I
quote from the highest level,
‘it wasn’t in their best interest
to go ahead and contribute
anything financial to a sidewalk.’
So the question is, is it
in the city’s best interest to go
ahead and grant the waiver of
any fees to the high school
when we can go ahead and
use those exact same fees to
go into our Capital Improvement
Fund to go ahead and
maybe fix a few sidewalks
around town?”
Second Ward Alderman
Brian Smith said he would
support the council in tabling
the matter to allow time for
further discussion with Lockport
Township High School
officials.
“I wouldn’t mind if there
are some questions here in
regards to what’s going on,
nothing better than to come
forward and explain,” he
said. “That’s all I’m saying,
just to clear things up.”
Lockport Township High
School is required to pay the
municipality for the costs of
review fees. No other fees are
conveyed to them by the city.
Petrakos said he understands
Deskin’s concern to
a point, but he would beg to
differ.
“We do not have any jurisdiction
over building permits,
materials or anything inside
the actual building, but we
are responsible for reviewing
zoning,” he said.
The Lockport City Council
will place the matter up for
vote at its Jan. 18 meeting.
Freelance Reporter
For many military families,
it is rare to have the opportunity
to all be together at
the same time.
Julie Hoffman knows
that due to the nature of the
armed forces, she is usually
lucky to have even one of her
three children with her for
the holidays. This year, however,
she had all three, all of
whom are Lockport Township
High School graduates
who took part in Air Force
Junior ROTC while there.
“It means so much to me
to be able to have them together
around the holiday
season,” Hoffman said. “I
am so proud of them for all
for what they have accomplished
so far.
“I am honored to say that I
am their mother.”
Hoffman and her three
children; 25-year-old Kenneth
Macejak, 22-year-old
Olivia Macejak and 18-yearold
Hannah Macejak celebrated
the graduation of
Hannah from United States
Marine Corps basic training
with family and friends last
month at American Legion
John Olson Post 18 in Lockport.
The celebration came days
before Olivia, an airman in
the Navy, was sent on deployment
for an undisclosed
amount of time. Kenneth
serves as a sergeant in the
Marine Corps, who went on
a deployment of his own to
Afghanistan.
“My oldest and my youngest
have always wanted to
serve in the military,with
my middle child deciding to
join after two years in college,”
Hoffman said. “My
kids were always raised with
respect for the military, and
once they got to the age to
decide, they made the decision
to serve our country.
“Events like [the American
Legion recognition]
show me that people care.”
Lockport Mayor Steve Streit,
himself a Navy veteran,
made an appearance to congratulate
the family.
Olivia said she is grateful
for the chance to see her
brother and sister before she
begins her deployment.
“You don’t know where
you are going to be in the future,
so being with them now
is great,” she said.
The sometimes difficult
reality for families of armed
service members cannot be
escaped, said Hoffman, who
suffered many sleepless
nights while her son served a
seven-month deployment in
Afghanistan.
“In the military, you have
the highs and lows,” Hoffman
said. “As a mom, you
are full of pride and worry;
I had many sleepless nights
when my son was gone.
“It definitely taught me
great patience and strength.

LPD asks for public’s help in murder investigation
Max Lapthorne, Editor
The Lockport Police Department
is working a variety
of angles in an attempt to find
the person responsible for
the November murder of two
brothers at a construction site
in Lockport.
Marco Antonio Ceja-Sanchez,
37, and David Ceja-
Sanchez, 36, both of Aurora,
were found shot dead inside
a townhome in Lockport’s
Sagebrook subdivision early
in the morning on Nov. 29.
There are currently no suspects
and “no clear motive”
for the murder, according to
Lockport Police Department
Detective Sergeant John
Arizzi.
“We’re doing everything
we can to find out why someone
would want to harm these
individuals,” Arizzi said.
Neither of the men had
criminal histories, and the
crime is not believed to be
drug-related, Arizzi said. Police
have conducted hundreds
of interviews with friends
and family who all say the
men were hard-working and
spent much of their time at
work or with their families.
“We can’t find anyone that
has a negative thing to say
about them,” Arizzi said.
The two men, who worked
together as drywall hangers,
were working at the time of
the murder, according to police.
They worked at job sites
in various cities, and police
believe the murder would have
happened regardless of where
they were working that day. It
was only the second time the
men had been to Lockport.
“There is no Lockport nexus
to it,” Arizzi said.
The Lockport Police Department
has worked with a
number of law enforcement
agencies during the investigation
including the Will-
Grundy Major Crimes Task
Force, Will County Sheriff’s
Department, Joliet Police
Department, Illinois State Police,
FBI, Drug Enforcement
Agency and Homeland Security.
The LPD has four officers
working on the murder case
every day, but is also asking
for help from the public.
“This is our number one
priority; it has been since it
happened,” Lockport Police
Chief Terry Lemming said.
“We believe that someone
other than those responsible
for killing the brothers know
something about this.”
Anyone with any information
about the murders is
asked to contact the Lockport
Police Department Investigations
Division at (815)
838-2132 or call Will County
Crime Stoppers at (800)
323-6734.
“We’re trying to get their
families justice,” Lemming
said. “Those two guys didn’t
deserve this.”
Why do we make resolutions?
Max Lapthorne
max@lockportlegend.com
New year, new me.
That is the mantra
commonly thrown
around this time of the year,
as we all attempt to better
ourselves by sticking to our
New Year’s resolutions.
Some people set specific
goals for themselves, such
as losing weight or getting
a promotion, but my New
Year’s resolution isn’t as cut
and dry.
My goal for this year is
to get out of my comfort
zone more often and be
more welcoming to new
ideas and opinions. While I
don’t consider myself to be
exceptionally close-minded,
I think one of the most
important things people can
do is be willing to accept a
point of view that conflicts
with their own. And I am a
creature of habit, so getting
out of my comfort zone isn’t
usually on my day-to-day
agenda. But, I’m hoping I’ll
push myself a little more to
experience things I wouldn’t
normally in 2017.
There’s a wide range of
New Year’s resolutions for
us to choose from, and I’m
sure most of you have your
own —big or small — that
you plan on sticking to this
year. In this week’s news
cover story on Page 3, we
take a look at how people in
Lockport are accomplishing
the most common resolution
of all — getting in shape.
Gyms always get more
crowded at the beginning
of the year with everyone
starting their resolutions,
and Lockport is no different.
Challenge Fitness is
even offering discounts for
those who are looking to get
started working out.
A discounted membership
and the desire to be a better
person in the new year is
often enough to get people
to the gym in January, but
the struggle comes with
consistency. Year-round
gym-goers often joke about
the influx of members in
the month of January, but
it inevitably dies down
because people struggle to
break their previous routine
and create a new one. There
is definitely no shame in
that, because it is difficult to
make a change and have it
stick on the first try.
If we’re willing to accept
a change in our lives, be it
small or large, we will be
able to facilitate not only
New Year’s resolutions, but
all sorts of positive changes.
Making New Year’s
resolutions is a way for us
to prove to ourselves that
we’re capable of changing
for the better, and it doesn’t
really matter what the resolution
is. So, best of luck to
all of you with your resolutions,
I hope you stick with
them to the end and can turn
around this time next year
and make a new one.
Pop’s franchisees honor family
tradition, just in different industry
“THE
8TH WONDER
OF THE WORLD. ...”
—Joe Heard, former White House photographer
Tim Carroll
Contributing Editor
Twenty-two years ago,
Mike Motto and his two
brothers, Matt and Mark —
all educated at Providence
Catholic — had the chance
to keep up the family tradition.
Their version of the family
tradition was not exactly the
same — the Mottos’ parents
and grandfather had been in
the grocery store business —
but it was close enough.
They bought a Pop’s Italian
Beef & Sausage restaurant.
“We thought we were going
into the grocery store
business, [but my parents
sold] right before I’m getting
ready to be college age, so I
went off to Illinois State, followed
by my two brothers,”
Mike Motto said.
After his parents sold independently-owned
Motto’s
Foods and it became clear
that a grocery career was not
in store for him, Mike Motto
took a position out of college
at Frank’s Nursery & Crafts.
But he immediately began
researching different franchising
opportunities, including
McDonald’s, Hardee’s
and Blockbuster video
stores. None of them was
the perfect fit, though. One
brother was finished with
school, and the other was
getting ready to graduate,
but they did not yet know
which chain to join until the
chance to get in on the Pop’s
expansion arose.
“Pop’s was just starting
to expand a little bit,” Mike
Motto said. “... We got to
know the product a little bit,
and we knew the owner, so I
talked to him and explained
to him how I was looking to
go into business.”
After Matt, the youngest
Brothers (left to right) Matt, Mike and Mark Motto combine
to own five Pop’s Italian Beef & Sausage locations in the
south suburbs, including Lockport, Mokena and Orland
Park. Photo Submitted
of the Motto boys, graduated,
the Motto family was
in the market for a new car.
That was when they heard
Pop’s owner Frank Radochonski
had opened a Bourbonnais
location and was
having some trouble running
between the original Palos
Heights Pop’s and the Bourbonnais
store.
When they went down to
Bourbonnais, the Mottos decided
to get involved with
the business. The brothers
came up with half of the
money necessary to buy the
Bourbonnais spot and borrowed
the other half from
their father in 1994, keeping
the Motto business owner
tradition alive.
In 1998, something eerily
similar happened. Motto
himself was in the market
for a new car this time, and
he heard that the Orland
Park location was for sale.
The brothers jumped at
the chance. At that time, the
three were living together in
Bourbonnais in a two-bedroom
condo.
Mark and Matt Motto
moved back to the Tinley
Park area and began working
at the Orland Park location.
Shortly thereafter, the
Mottos sold the Bourbonnais
location back to Radochonski
to focus on the growing
Orland Park store, and Mike
Motto moved back to the
Tinley Park area, as well.
In 2004, the Mottos licensed
another location in
Mokena. In 2006, the brothers
opened a Lockport location.
In 2007, they opened
up in Tinley park. In 2009,
they opened up in Romeoville.
And finally, in 2013,
they opened another location
in Orland Park.
It was not always easy
for the brothers, especially
when they were cramped together
in Bourbonnais, but
they always made it work.
“There were three of us,
but it was a two-bedroom
condo,” Mark Motto said.
“But we always got along.”
Despite the fact that they
spend the majority of their
time at different Pop’s locations,
Mike Motto said he is
most proud of his family’s
cohesion.
“The proudest thing is that
me and my brothers have
stuck together through it
all,” he said. “We’re part of
a successful chain now that
we helped develop, and it’s
a lot, it’s a big thing. A lot of
people would not have done
it. But it’s paid off in the
long run.”
lockportlegend.com DINING OUT
the Lockport Legend | January 12, 2017 | 13
The Dish
Side Street combines unique flavors with entertainment
Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor
Side Street American
Tavern offers more than just
good food.
Accurately named, Side
Street American Tavern is
nestled off 183rd Street and
Harlem Avenue at 18401
North Creek Drive in Tinley
Park. The restaurant not
only offers a wide range of
meal options on its menu
but also seemingly can adjust
to anyone’s entertainment
needs.
Side Street has a private
dining room for all occasions.
The restaurant also
can shift into a sports bar
when needed, with 25 televisions
throughout. It truly
is a chameleon of a restaurant,
featuring seasonal
menu items to boot.
Owner Jimmy Kollintzas
has been working in the
industry his entire life. He
wanted Side Street to be a
middle ground for residents.
Kollintzas is a Tinley
Park resident but grew up in
Indiana. He has worked as a
bus boy, on the line and now
has opened yet another restaurant.
He also owns a fast
food concept restaurant in
Joliet, World Famous Jimmy
K’s Gyros.
“In high school, I started
off working in a family diner
and worked my way up
into owning my own restaurant,”
Kollintzas said.
He opened Side Street
with his business partners
and cousins on March 17 of
this past year.
“Being on the south side,
you have sports bars and
you have very fine dining
restaurants,” Kollintzas
said. “We wanted to be a
unique experience where
you could have a little bit of
both.”
Since the Tinley Park
Convention Center is close,
and the restaurant itself is
This BBQ Burger ($12) at Side Street American Tavern in
Tinley Park features an antibiotic-free patty with cherrywood
bacon, onion strings, cheddar cheese, lettuce and
BBQ sauce, garnished with a pickle and seasoned fries.
Brittany Kapa/22nd Century Media
surrounded by hotels, it provided
a good opportunity to
play around with the menu
and add some more highend
dishes. Kollintzas said
they wanted to be able to offer
everyone a good variety
of options for dinner.
“What I’ve learned: Our
biggest asset as an independent
is that we’re hands
on,” Kollintzas said. “I’m
here every day. We’re really
getting to know what our
customers want and getting
customer feedback.”
Customer feedback has
played a major role in what
is offered on the extensive
menu.
Patrons can come in
with friends and share the
generous portion of Side
Street Nachos ($10). Options
with the dish include
adding chicken ($2) or steak
($4).
“We wanted unique items
on the menu — wow items,”
Kollintzas said. “I think it’s
very important, because people
eat with their eyes.”
Kollintzas always is willing
to hear what customers
have to say about his restaurant.
And recently, Side
Street opened for lunch, per
customer request.
“Our menu added a couple
more items that people
wanted,” Kollintzas said,
noting with the cold weather
people were craving heavier
options.
Uniquely named, the
Weezee is a creation from his
store in Joliet that has been
brought to Tinley Park. A
repeat customer visited, and,
at the time, Kollintzas was
trying out a new beef sandwich.
The customer loved it
so much that he brought his
friends the next day. Kollintzas
decided to name the
sandwich after him.
“He was a truck driver,
and his name said ‘Weezee’
on [his shirt],” Kollintzas
said. “He was a bigger guy,
so we called it the ‘Big
Weezee.’”
The ‘big’ has been
dropped, but the Original
Weezee ($12) can be found
on the menu, complete with
beef, mozzarella and signature
seasoning, known as
sottaceti.
Since the space is so large,
Kollintzas has capitalized
on this fact. And there are
events throughout the week
— live entertainment during
the week, as well as live
bands on the weekend. The
restaurant also has indoor
bags and trivia nights for
those interested.
“This restaurant is very
unique, because it’s such
a beautiful building,”
you have to make yourself
stand out a little bit.”
10 Questions
with Gianna Palade
Gianna Palade is a freshman at Lockport
Township High School.
How did you get into cheerleading?
I started in sixth grade; I just did
the recreational cheer. I wanted to do
it for Lockport because their teams
are really good, and I just wanted to be a
part of it.
What do you like about it?
A lot of the girls on it are really fun, and
you make really good friends through it.
Competition season is really fun, too.

What has your first season with the
Porters been like?
There’s a lot of practices, but in the end
it’s worth it. It’s just been a good experience
to have.
Do you have any pre-competition
rituals?
We have a little pump-up circle, and we
just give each other confidence and then we
end up going out there.
What is your favorite TV show?
Currently, I’m watching “The Fosters.”
If you had a free ticket to go anywhere
in the world, where would you
go and why?
I would probably go to California because
it always interested me and it just seems really
fun. I just like warmer places.
Do you have a role model?
Not really. I have expectations for myself
and goals that I like to reach.
What do you want to do when you
get older?
I want to be a cosmetologist. I want to lean
more into doing hair and makeup.
Photo submitted
What is your favorite subject in
school?
This is crazy, but math [is], even though
I’m super bad at it. Once I get the hang
of the subject I’m on, it’s actually kind of fun
to do.
What is your goal for the season?
My goal is for us to win state, not only because
it’s state and you want to win it, but
the team we’re going against [Sandburg]
beat us in both competitions, but not by a lot.
It would just be a good feeling to know that
we beat them, and even better because it’s
at state.
Day 1
On Day 1, Lockport
found itself in the middle of
what has been described as
a “meat grinder” of a tournament.
The Cheesehead Invitational
— which brings
together some of the top
prep wrestling teams in the
Midwest and the country
to Kaukauna, Wisconsin —
began Friday, Jan. 6, and
the Porters were right in the
thick of the battle from the
start.
Lockport sat in fifth place
in the 31-team tourney after
Day 1. Kasson-Mantorville
(Minnesota) led at that time
with 163 points. Defending
champion Mt. Carmel,
Southeast Polk (Iowa) and
Apple Valley (Minnesota)
rounded out the Top 5 on
Day 1.
tournament is definitely a
step up in competition,”
Porters coach Josh Oster
said. “We were out in
[Pennsylvania] at the
Powerade last weekend, so
we have seen this high level
of competition.”
The Porters got off to a
strong start on Day 1, with
only the 220-pounder and
the 285-pounder losing
their first-round matches.
Lockport said it hoped
to be in the mix for the
team title.
“It is really hard to track
what you are doing in a
tournament like this,” Oster
said. “You have 11 mats going,
and you are constantly
on the move. You don’t have
time to process, because
you are match on match on
match. We went 12-2 in that
all-important first round, so
that was good. We wanted
to get all 14, obviously but
we didn’t get there.”
The Porters did very well
in the first two pool rounds,
and they had a fair amount
of student-athletes who
moved into the 1-8 pool.
“We know the kind of
wrestlers we have, and everyone
is going to go out
there and wrestle hard, so I
am not surprised by our success
so far,” Oster said. “We
wrestle hard, wrestle smart,
and they prepared for this
type of tournament.”
Girls Basketball
Porters fall to Celtics in local matchup
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
Just the mention of it made
Claire Paciga squirm.
“Oh yeah, it was awful,”
the Providence senior said.
The “it” was the matchup
between the Celtics girls basketball
team and Lockport
Township from the season
before. It was safe to say that
Paciga and her teammates
liked this season’s result a lot
better.
Paciga poured in a gamehigh
18 points as Providence
took charge early and went
on to defeat Lockport 50-
41 in a clash of local opponents
Saturday, Jan. 7 in New
Lenox.
Sophomore forward Ryann
O’Garek (16 points, 9 rebounds)
also came up big for
the Celtics (12-6), who were
celebrating alumni day and
got their second win of the
week. Lockport (11-8) lost its
third straight game. The Porters
were led by junior guard
Taylor Hopkins, who scored
all 10 of her team-high points
in the fourth quarter.
The season before, the
Celtics traveled to Lockport
and lost 55-40. They used
that as motivation in last
week’s rematch.
“That was the worst game
I ever played,” Paciga said of
the previous season’s tussle.
“I feel that last year made me
want to redeem myself.”
That she did, scoring 14
points in the second half to
help keep the Porters at bay.
“Last season was the worst
game against them,” Providence
coach Eileen Copenhaver
echoed of the previous
Lockport matchup. “There
was no energy in that game,
but [last week] we had it.
They are talented. We had to
have everyone step up and
we did.”
Lockport coach Dan Kelly
noted that the Celtics are talented
as well.
“A lot of credit goes to
them,” he said of Providence.
“They executed offensively.
They moved the ball and
found the shot.”
Things started out fairly
well for the Porters. Senior
guard Elena Woulfe (5
points) hit a 3-pointer with
5:24 to play in the opening
quarter to give them a 5-2
lead. But with just over four
minutes left in the first quarter,
Paciga fittingly put Providence
ahead for good by converting
an offensive rebound
into a basket for a 6-5 lead.
That bucket came during
a 10-0 run that would give
the Celtics the lead for good.
Lockport sophomore guard
Payton Grcevic finally ended
that by hitting a 3-pointer with
55 seconds left in the quarter
to make it 12-8. But the Porters
trailed 13-9 after the first
quarter and never got closer.
Much of that was due to
O’Garek, who had 12 points
in the first half. With Providence
leading 19-12 midway
through the second quarter,
O’Garek scored the final
eight points of the half for
the Celtics. They led 27-18 at
halftime.
“We had more energy this
year and were ready for the
game,” said O’Garek, who
was on varsity as a freshman.
“We were just more
prepared. I think it’s just having
more experience that has
helped us.
“We’ve come ready for
every game and have played
with a different attitude.”
The Porters tried to clamp
down on defense to open
the second half. Baskets
by junior forwards Megan
James and Taylor Shingler
(9 points) drew them within
27-22 with 5:01 to play in the
third quarter. But they missed
some other open looks that
could have narrowed it to a
one possession game.
“To start the second half
we scored and then had some
nice looks,” Kelly said. “We
forced some turnovers [five
in the third quarter, 18 in the
game] and then couldn’t convert.
That would have been
a huge momentum swing to
score some more points and
get that.”
Instead it was Paciga with
a pair of free throws and a
3-pointer to restore the Celtics
led to 32-22 with 3:43 left
in the third quarter. The guard
had seven points in both the
third and fourth quarters and
Lockport never got closer
than nine points the rest of
the way.
Ahead 34-25, a layup by
junior guard Courtney Mahalik
(4 points) and a 3-pointer
by senior guard Meghan
Morrissette (6 points) put
Providence ahead 39-25. It
was 39-27 after three quarters
and a quick 7-2 spurt gave
the Celtics a 46-29 lead with
6:36 to play in the game.
Fueled by Hopkins, the
Porters had a 7-0 run to close
within 46-36 exactly midway
through the fourth quarter.
But the next two minutes
brought a series of missed
shots and turnovers by both
teams and the Providence
lead was never under 10 until
the final seconds.
Senior center Kaleigh Schmutzler
(4 points) came off
the bench as starting center
freshman Treasure Thompson
(4 points) was hampered
by foul trouble most of the
game for Lockport.
While Kelly hoped to get
his teams offensive woes
patched up for the Porters’
third meeting of the season
with Sandburg, which took
place on Tuesday, Jan. 10,
Copenhaver was happy where
her team was. Providence had
seven wins total last year and
has already nearly doubled
that this season.
“It was a good week for
us,” Copenhaver said. “The
kids have had a good attitude.
As long as they keep bringing
this attitude, we’ll be in good
shape and play well.”
Earlier in the week, on Jan.
5, Lockport lost 72-40 to first
place Homewood-Flossmoor
at home in a SouthWest
Suburban Blue matchup.
Hopkins (16 points) paced
the Porters while Thompson
added nine points and five
rebounds.
OPPORTUNITY
It was a quick beginning,
but not the end the Porters
were looking for.
The team will now look
ahead to regional play after
finishing fifth after a hot start
to the day at the SouthWest
Suburban Conference championship
meet Saturday, Jan.
7, at Laraway Lanes in New
Lenox.
The Porters rolled a 3,183
in the morning session to
build a 102-pin lead after
three games but managed a
2,743 in the afternoon.
Lockport’s top bowler,
Andy Sims, was held to a
201 average after averaging
around 245 in December.
“The lanes broke down on
us,” Lockport coach Ron Davis
said. “We just had a hard
time making adjustments.
You needed a good touch
today on these lanes, and we
didn’t have it. Even our top
bowler, Andy Sims, couldn’t
find that touch.”
On the other hand, rival
Sandburg’s first conference
title in boys bowling was not
going to be complete without
some added drama.
The Eagles entered the
day atop the nine-team leaderboard
but had to wait until
their final frame to celebrate
winning the meet. They ultimately
won the conference
championship and placed
three bowlers on the All-
Conference team.
In all, area teams finished
first, second and third, and
10 of the 12 All-Conference
honorees were from area
teams.
Entering the sixth and final
game, Sandburg sat in second
place in total pins. With
Suburban Conference meet Saturday, Jan. 7, at Laraway
points combined from regular
season conference meets
and the conference championship,
Sandburg could be
at worst a co-champion by
finishing second. Instead, the
Eagles put the math aside by
erasing an 11-pin deficit to
take first place by nine pins.
“They showed some resiliency
and a never-quit
attitude,” Sandburg coach
Jeff Kwilose said. “I tried to
pump some positive energy
into them, because we needed
every pin. That’s what
I preached, that every pin
counts.”
The Eagles were led by
All-Conference performers
Cameron Crowe, Brandon
Goeringer and AJ Svatos. It
was Goeringer’s 256 in the
final game that helped Sandburg
outscore Lincoln-Way
Central 1,026-1,006 to jump
back in front while holding
off a late surge by Lincoln-
Way West.
Central, which finished
second with 120 points, had
been 137 pins out of first
place after the three morning
games. It took the lead after
the fifth game, which included
junior Trevor Amir taking
a perfect game into the ninth
frame. Amir, Jack Davern
and Alex Nolan were named
to the All-Conference team.
“Our whole goal this season
has been to win next
week [at regionals],” Central
coach Coley O’Connell said.
“We’re where we want to be.
Today was a total team effort,
and you saw that balance to
be No 2. It was a fun day to
be a coach.”
West, which finished third
with 114 points, rolled the
highest frame of the day
(1,125) in the sixth game.
It was too little too late, as
Sandburg finished with 6,212
pins, Central with 6,203 and
West with 6,171.
Eric Ullian (269) and Michael
Nork (249) posted their
highest scores of the day for
West in that game. Ullian,
Nork and Caleb Kirby earned
All-Conference recognition.
East finished in sixth and
was led by junior Colton
Marks. He finished tied for
11th in total pins and was one
of just two All-Conference
honorees from a team outside
of the Top 4.
“He’s been consistent, and
his performance today is
what we’ve come to expect
from him,” East coach Mike
Foster said.
Lockport will be in the Oswego
East Regional at Parkside
Lanes in Aurora.
All three regionals feed
into the Plainfield North Sectional
Jan. 21 at Joliet’s Town
and Country Lanes.

Porters finish fifth at Cheesehead, as Abdullah Assaf wins title
The Lockport Porters wrestling
team knew the grind the Cheesehead
Invitational would be Jan. 6-7.
A frequent visitor to the prestigious
tournament at Kaukauna High
School in Wisconsin, the Porters
have earned Top 15 finishes for the
past five years.
This year was no exception.
Coming in as the highest
nationally ranked team in the
tournament, the Porters wrestled
their way to a fifth-place finish in
the 31-team tournament. Montini
Catholic won the team title, with
Mt. Carmel, Kasson-Mantorville
and Apple Valley rounding out the
Top 5.
hunt, and then, obviously, we
are not there,” Lockport coach
The Homer Jr. High eighthgrade
girls basketball team
recently finished third in state
competition, capping a season
in which the team went 25-
champions in the Des Plaines Valley
Conference.
The squad, coached by Melody
Lukancic Middle School 35-22 Dec.
and earn the trip to the Illinois
thing I said to myself coming in is that no
one touches me on neutral. I knew I had
the best offense, and I wanted to come in
and show that.”
Abdullah Assaf — Lockport Township wrestler, on going 7-0 at
the Cheesehead Invitational
Josh Oster said. “We had a couple
rough rounds in the quarters
and the semi-wrestlebacks. We
had seven in the Top 8, which is
good, but we were looking to have
double digits in that Top 8 area,
and we fell a little short of that.”
The Porters got a championship
from Abdullah Assaf. The senior
beat the New Lenox Liberty 35-
rebounded with a 47-43 victory
over Markham Prairie-Hills in the
third-place game for its ultimate
finish.
