Men’s Soccer & Women’s Tennis Win Conference Titles

The fall 2016

season saw both

the men’s soccer

and women’s tennis

teams capture Little

East Conference

Regular Season

Championships as

part of an outstanding


Head Coach John Mello’s Anchormen took home a share of their

first Little East Conference Regular Season Championship, posting a

15-4-1 overall record with a 5-1-1 mark in league play. RIC dropped a

heartbreaking, 2-1, decision against nationally-ranked UMass Boston in the

conference championship game and narrowly missed securing an at-large

bid to the NCAA Div. III National Championship.

The team was led by a trio of All-New England performers as junior

forward Komla Dogbey and senior goalkeeper Chris Moura were named

First Team All-N.E., while senior midfielder Dan Monteiro was named

Second Team All-N.E., by the National Soccer Coaches Association of

America (NSCAA). Dogbey led the team in scoring with 15 goals and eight

assists for 38 points. Of his 15 goals, five of them were game-winners.

Moura posted a 1.07 goals against average and .877 save percentage in net

for the Anchormen. Monteiro notched seven goals with two assists for 16

Sánchez has been active in what he calls his

“Listening Tour.” This year’s annual event,

held in Naples on Jan. 27, will be an extension

of his tour and will highlight the many great

happenings taking place on campus.

Junior Dayna Reilly was named the Little East Player of the Year,

while senior Julie Reddy, also an All-Little East selection, established

a new school record for points in a career with 77.5 during her four

years at RIC.



Roland Blais ’55

Rhode Island College was saddened by the passing

of Athletic Hall of Famer and basketball legend Roland

Blais ’55 and former head men’s & women’s tennis

coach Dick Ernst and this fall.

Blais was inducted into both RIC’s and Lincoln

High School’s Athletic Hall of Fames. He played soccer

was an accomplished basketball player, and was the

first 1,000 point scorer at Rhode Island College. Roland

was an educator for 38 years, principally in the Lincoln

School System and the ARC of Woonsocket.

At the Blais Family’s request, donations are being accepted to endow

the men’s basketball MVP award in Roland’s name. Anyone wishing to

contribute to this endowment is asked to send in donations

to RIC Athletics.

Ernst guided the men’s and women’s programs

to four Little East crowns apiece during his tenure.

He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of

Fame in 2005. Ernst’s coaching career at the collegiate

and interscholastic level spanned over 50 years.

Gammell’s men’s golf

team narrowly missed winning

the program’s sixth

straight Great Northeast

Athletic Conference

(GNAC) title, by finishing

second with a score of

610 (305, 305) at the 2016

GNAC Championship.

The Anchormen finished just three strokes behind St. Joseph’s

(ME) for the championship and junior Drew Quirk placed sixth overall

(one place shy of earning All-Conference honors).

After winning the MCLA Invitational to start the season, RIC finished

in the top two in four of its six competitions this fall.

Over 200 people attended the annual Athletic Recognition

Dinner and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held

at Donovan Dining Center on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016

President Emeritus Dr. John Nazarian ’54 and former

Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Gary Penfield

were honored by being the first recipients of the

Nazarian/Penfield Leadership Award.

Twenty former men’s basketball players and coaches were on

hand to support former Head Coach Bob Walsh’s induction.

R.I.I.L. Inducts Four With RIC Ties Into HOF

The Rhode Island Interscholastic

League (R.I.I.L.) held its annual

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at

a gala event held at the Crowne Plaza

in Warwick on Oct. 26.

Four of its inductees have ties

to Rhode Island College, led by current

Associate Director of Athletics

and Athletic Hall of Famer Jo-Ann

D’Alessandro ’88.

In addition to D’Alessandro,

Don Gainey ’66, a long-time administrator and former principal at West

Warwick High School and Betty Marquis ’71, current league director of

softball and a longtime assistant principal, were also enshrined.

Craig Blanchard, who is the father of current Assistant to the Athletic

Director Eric Blanchard, was also inducted. Blanchard worked closely

with the RIC Department of the Athletics and played a key role in its

webcasting endeavors.

The Department of Athletics recently had

aerial shots taken of its facilities.

2016-17 Winter Sports Update

With the fall semester winding down, the winter sports teams

are already underway with their seasons. Here is a quick update.

• The men’s basketball team, led by senior forward Domonique

Bull with 11.7 ppg and 6.9 rpg, is off to a 4-6 record this season.

Head Coach Michael Byrnes’ Anchormen captured second place

at the Roger Williams/Courtyard By Marriott Tournament earlier

this season.

• Senior guard Alex Moore became

just the 14th player in RIC history to record

1,000 career points in women’s basketball

on Dec. 10. Moore is averaging 17.8 ppg

and 6.8 rpg to lead Head Coach Glenn

Senecal’s Anchorwomen to a 4-7 record

to date in the ’16-17 campaign.

• Head Coach Jay Jones’ wrestling

team is 2-1. RIC recorded solid showings

at a pair of early tournaments featuring

nationally-ranked programs before opening

the dual-meet portion of the schedule

with a 22-15 victory against Western

New England on Dec. 2. Junior Michael

Gallagher is ranked in the top five in New England at 184 lbs., while

senior John Georges is also in the top

five in N.E. at 285 lbs.

• Head Coach Ron Sutherland’s

women’s swimming team has competed

against some of the toughest opposition

in New England to open the

season and will head into the home

stretch of the campaign after the New

Year. The Anchorwomen are led by

senior Abbie Leazes who has finished

in the top five in nearly every race she’s

entered this year.

• RIC’s men’s & women’s indoor

track & field season is underway after

a pair of individual meets at UMass

Boston and Northeastern. On the women’s side, sophomore Melanie

Brunelle has been strong in the long jump and the 400m for Head

Coach Timothy Rudd. Head Men’s Coach Nick Palazzo has seen

junior Shamar Spruill and the rest of the field athletes lead the way.

• Head Coach Bob Nannig’s women’s gymnastics team, led

by captains Miranda Murphy and Erin Shea, will open the season

on Sunday, Jan. 15 (Noon) at The Murray Center against Springfield,

Ithaca and Brockport.
