EXHIBITIONS Organized biennially, Young at Art presents works of art by Madison Metropolitan School District students in kindergarten through grade 12. The exhibition is the result of a long-standing collaboration between MMoCA and the school district’s Arts Education Department. For the exhibition, each of Madison’s public school art teachers is invited to submit up to three works of art for the exhibition, including individual works as well as those made collaboratively. The resulting exhibition showcases a full range of subject matter, technique, and art mediums—from drawing, painting, and collage to photography, metals, ceramic, fiber, and new media arts. Young at Art calls attention to children’s creative potential and to the scope and variety of individual expression. The exhibition also highlights YOUNG AT ART the high caliber of art instruction in Madison’s public schools and the interdisciplinary nature of art education. RECONFIGURED REALITY On view in the Henry Street Gallery, Reconfigured Reality: Contemporary Photography from the Permanent Collection, presents an overview of developments since 1970 that have helped define contemporary photography. The world of photography has been transformed since the advent of the traditional black-and-white photograph, particularly in recent decades. New and older technologies and formats, many of which have been adopted by artists represented in Reconfigured Reality, have opened photography up to fresh perspectives. Contemporary photographers have discredited the narrow view that the camera is a recording device only, not a creative tool, and that its purpose is strictly representational. Artists have devled into this malleable medium, having laid to rest the notion that the camera can ever capture the “objective” world—as wittily suggested in Kenneth Josephson’s New York State, 1970. An arm holds out what may be either a postcard or a photograph of a cruise ship that floats on the horizon line of some great body of water. Is this only a visual pun about what’s real and what’s not? Possibly Josephson’s photograph of a photograph within a photograph questions, as it plays with representation, the ability of the camera to chronicle something as elusive as objective reality. Exhibitions in the Henry Street Gallery are generously funded through an endowment established by the Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation. EXHIBITIONS ON VIEW THROUGH NOVEMBER 12, 2017 NEW ACQUISITION Due to the generosity of longtime MMoCA supporter Richard E. Brock, the museum has acquired a drawing by Claire Stigliani. Initially presented during her recent solo exhibition Claire Stigliani: Half-Sick of Shadows, the work, simply titled Drawing (2015), is a self-portrait in acrylic and colored pencil with gold leaf accents. In a room blanketed floor-to-ceiling in pink fur, the barefooted artist sits on a gilded chair in front of an easel drawing a picture. Her left hand is tethered with ropes to a woman, clad in a black leather bodysuit, who lies helplessly on the pink shag carpet, bound and gagged. In a notable reversal of power roles, this illustrated version of Stigliani holds the reigns, placing her dominatrix counterpart in a position of submissiveness. However, the artist and her be-leathered alterego are inextricably linked, each independent action impacting the other by the ropes that bind them together. If, as stated by Stigliani, her blonde doppelganger represents the personification of creativity, then the composition as a whole speaks to her relationship to her artistic self—a relationship she at once controls and is controlled by. And with its allusions to erotic love, Drawing also hints at the struggle between intimacy and power; how the desire for human connection—romantic, sexual, creative, or otherwise—can bind and restrict.
