SANTA GOES TO BED
The 23rd December saw a very special
guest visit one of Uppermill's premier
venues. None other than Father
Christmas himself popped into BED in
Uppermill to provide some festive joy
to local families out enjoying a spot of
brunch.
Complete with his trademark belly, red
suit and white beard, around 40
children were overjoyed as he took
time out to have photos taken with
them, as well as handing out gifts. The
morning was certainly popular with
everyone who came along and a
percentage of the money raised will be
going towards MacMillan.
On the 23rd of February
BED will be hosting a
charity fashion show in
conjunction with The
Saddleworth Boutique.
The show will begin at
7.30pm and will include
a whole host of fashion,
fizz and canapés. A third
of all ticket sales will be
going toward MacMillan
so make sure you show
your support for a great
event. You'll be able see
a review of the fashion in
next issue!
Nicola Martin - Britain’s
best market champion in
the Great British High
Street Awards
TAMESIDE Council’s Markets team have added another title to their
growing list of accolades. Manager Nicola Martin has been named
Britain’s best market champion in the Great British High Street Awards.
The competition, which is organised by the Department for
Communities and Local Government, celebrates the work that is being
done to revive, adapt and diversify Britain’s town centres. It is one
among many initiatives championing high streets as the cornerstones of
the community.
Nicola, who received her award from High Streets Minister Andrew
Percy, commented: “I’m so honoured to have won, but the award’s not
just down to me, it’s down to all the great staff and traders I have the
honour of working with. I want to say a big thank-you to everyone who
supported me.” The awards website praises Nicola as the embodiment of today’s modern market manager. It adds: “She leads a number of thriving markets in Tameside –
indoor and outdoor, farmers’ and artisan markets. “Among her many achievements, this year Nicola has created an innovative and award-winning market at Tameside
Hospital which sells fresh produce to meet the needs of patients and staff alike. “Her social media skills and redevelopment of Ashton’s new outdoor market make her a
worthy winner.”
As part of her prize, Nicola will receive training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants, and a trip to Twitter’s UK headquarters in London. As part of
her prize Nicola will also receive training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants, and a trip to Twitter UK’s London office to boost her social media
skills. Cllr John Taylor, Tameside Council’s deputy leader, said: “Nicola and her team are always looking for new ways of attracting people into our town centres and they
fully deserve the recognition that a Great British High Streets Award gives them. “The fact that Tameside’s markets continue to be popular is down to the dedication and
creativity of Nicola and her team. I offer them my heartiest congratulations.”
High Streets Minister Andrew Percy added: “Nicola deserves the very highest praise. She demonstrates how today’s markets manager has to think. Nicola has put her
innovative ideas to good use and that makes her a worthy winner.” Minister Andrew Percy said: “Nicola deserves the very highest praise for being a category winner in this
year’s Great British High Street Awards. “She demonstrates how today’s modern market manager has to think. Nicola has put her innovative ideas to good use as she leads
a number of thriving markets in Tameside which makes her a worthy winner of this award.”
Oldham Business 100 raises money for
Maggie's at Christmas get together
OB100 teamed up with The Clough Manor in Denshaw, Brand Consortia in Shaw
and cancer charity, Maggies Oldham to offer a night of quality food, wine and
entertainment. Together, they filled the luxury venue with 100 businesses that
work or operate in and around Oldham. The night commenced with a free 3
course meal and wine for all attendees, accompanied by the soulful Suburban
Swing Orchestra whose performance covered a range of music the audience
could jive along to.
During the night, Mujahid Khan of Oldham Council, introduced himself as a
representative for Maggies Oldham. Maggies Oldham are delighted to announce
that they will be building a new Centre here in Oldham to facilitate around 10,000
visits per year. The Centre is still in early planning stages, but please check back throughout the year as they provide updates direct on their website
(www.maggiescentres.org/our-/greater-manchester-campaign/maggies-oldham).
In return for providing free grub, drinks and some cracking entertainment, organisers politely asked the audience to dig deep in their pockets to offer any donation they
can towards this great cause. They managed to drum up a whopping total of £750.00 in just a few short hours.
Further in the night, they had talks from Kashif Ashraf, OB100 Founder, and Danny Simpson, Vice President of OB100 and MD MID Communications. Both gave
speeches to inspire guests that have
never been to Oldham Business 100 or
don’t know much about it. You could feel
a buzz in the room from local businesses
and individuals that genuinely have a
passion to do more together. Oldham
Business 100 will be known as a family
or a union formed together to help each
other.
Tarka dal (lentils)
By Sukhi Singh
The famous tarka dal we’ve all tried in restaurants
but this recipe far surpasses what you think is
tarka dal. As you eat a spoonful of the golden
lentils you’ll understand how it soothes you like
you’re being wrapped in a blanket of warmth.
This recipe comes from my maternal grandparents
family. Everything was cooked in copious amounts
of ghee and ghee was deemed to be a status
symbol.
I tend not to use ghee and butter in my recipes but I make an exception for tarka dal. My favourite way of
eating tarka dal is by breaking my chapatti into small pieces and putting them in a bowl full of dal. As the
chapatti absorbs the liquid from the lentils, it swells, it becomes really soft and it’s heavenly.
Directions
1 Place the lentils in a large mixing bowl and wash with warm water. Rinse and repeat this process until
the water runs clear. Finally drain the lentils and put them in a large heavy bottomed pan.
2 Add the salt, turmeric, water to the lentils and mix. Cook on a medium high heat for 40 minutes. Stir the
lentils occasionally and skim the scum off which floats on the top.
3 Whilst the lentils are cooking, in a medium sized saucepan melt the butter and the oil on medium heat.
4 Add the cumin seed, ginger and cook for 1 minute.
5 Add the onions a cook for 10 minutes. Stir frequently as you want an even colour on the onions. The onions should look caramelised and a deep brown colour.
6 Reduce the heat to low and then add the Kashmiri chilli powder and stir for 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes and cook for a further 4 minutes.
7 Stir in the coriander and then add to the lentils once they've cooked. Add more water if you want your dal to be a thinner consistency.
Ingredients
100 g red split lentils
100 g mung lentils
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 litres water
80 g unsalted butter
1 tsp cooking oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 red onions finely chopped
2 tbsp ginger finely chopped
1 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder
2 tomatoes finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped coriander
A NEW DAWN RISES FOR THE FARRARS ARMS
Local Comedy
Promoter
Named Best In
UK
2016 has certainly ended well for local
comedy promoter Rob Riley who has
just been named Best Independent
Comedy Promoter in the UK Comedy
Awards. The awards were set up in
2014 by London comedian John
Moloney with only professional
comedians and industry insiders being
allowed to vote.
A new year and a new beginning for one of Saddleworth’s most iconic pubs,
The Farrars at Grasscroft. Elizabeth Cosgrove, who has been working at The
Farrars for over 4 years is taking over the business and giving it a whole new
feel, specialising in great Wine, Tapas and Entertainment.
“The Farrars has always been a great venue, so I’m really pleased to have the
opportunity to take things to another level and introduce a few nice changes
which our customers will love.” says the new land-lady.
Elizabeth takes control after the recent exit of local musician, Anthony Kinsey,
who has gone on to a full-time career in music and events after over 6 years
as licensee. The re-opening will be on Friday January 20th when the pub will
open it’s doors from 7pm with complimentary Tapas Tasters for all customers.
"To be voted as best at what you do in
the entire country is pretty amazing but
the fact that it was all votes from my
peers is even better. I must admit to
being ever so slightly gob smacked and
Eagle-eyed schoolchildren set to
count Greater Manchester’s
birds
Big Schools’ Birdwatch, 3 January- 17 February 2017
Tens of thousands of schoolchildren across the UK, including throughout Greater
Manchester, will be swapping books for binoculars this term to take part in the
UK’s biggest schools wildlife survey.
The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch 2017 takes place during the first half of the spring term and helps children discover the wonderful wildlife they share their school
grounds with, whilst providing a helpful insight into which species are thriving or declining. According to research conducted by the RSPB2, one in five children are
disconnected from nature. Big Schools’ Birdwatch aims to inspire children to care about the natural world around them in the hope they’ll want to help protect it for future
generations. Last year almost 100,000 pupils and teachers from schools all across the UK took part by counting the birds that visited their school grounds, and it is hoped
even more will take part this year.
Over the years, more than 70 different species have been recorded in school grounds, ranging from starlings and house sparrows, to red kites and green woodpeckers.
The blackbird remained the most common playground visitor in 2016 whilst starlings held onto the second spot. And for the first time wood pigeons made the top three,
jumping up the list from sixth position the year before. Since its launch in 2002, the Big Schools’ Birdwatch has provided opportunities for children and teachers to learn
about how to give nature a home in their school grounds. Many schools prepare for the event in advance by putting up feeders and nestboxes and making bird cake.
Seeing and counting the birds coming to their feeders during the Big Schools Birdwatch is the perfect reward for their efforts.
Emma Reed, RSPB Education, Families and Youth Manager in Northern England said: “Taking part in Big Schools Birdwatch uses just one lesson or lunchtime so it’s really
easy to get involved. We hope the excitement of taking part will then inspire children in Greater Manchester to get out and experience more of the wildlife around them.
“With studies showing that children are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature, a concern that is linked to poorer physical and mental health, we want to
provide young people with as many opportunities as possible to have fun exploring the natural world around them.”
The Big Schools' Birdwatch is the school version of the Big Garden Birdwatch – the world's biggest garden wildlife survey aimed at families and individuals. The event will
take place over three days on 28, 29 and 30 January 2017 and further information can be found on the RSPB website rspb.org.uk/birdwatch
To register to take part in the 2017 RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch, visit rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch. Everything schools need to take part is available to download from the
RSPB website.
The White Lion
Head Chef Alan Enjoys Great First Year!
In a time when many country pubs are feeling the pinch, the same cannot be said for one local haunt, as they continue
to serve and satify the masses. As you may recall last year, The White Lion in the heart of Delph village took on
experienced chef Alan Warrior as he planned to enhance and improve the pubs already popular menu.
Well, we're happy to say that this has proved to be a great success, as the pub has never been busier. The Christmas
was booked up throughout and with many more ideas in the pipeline for 2017, the future certainly looks bright for both
Alan and the rest of the team. In fact, bookings are now being taken for next Christmas.
"It has been hard work but worth it." Says Alan. "The support Marie, Carl and the rest of the team have shown me has
been fantastic. I'm really looking forward to implementing some fresh ideas this coming year, so watch this space."
As well as a fantastic range of light bites and meals (including the popular Soup & Sandwich for £5 and Meal Deals for
smaller appetites 2 for £6... available Monday - Friday before 4pm), Alan is preparing to serve up a new menu towards
the end of February, which will include Steak
Nights every Tuesday and Pizza & Pasta Nights on
White Lion landlady congratulating
Head Chef Alan Warrior on a great
first year at the pub.
Wednesdays. There will also be a full gluten free section. There is also a fantastic range of starter and
dessert options available, as well as children's menu which will certainly keep them happy. Every
Sunday there is no other place to be, as you can take advantage of the two for one offer on Sunday
Roasts, including a vegetarian nut roast option with all the trimmings.
The pub also offer outside catering, Warrior & Co. So please keep an eye out for a new website coming
soon and on Facebook.
A big date for your diary is the 25th February when the White Lion will be launching a whole new
catering concept with a Charity Hoe Down. Further details of which will be posted on their Facebook
Alex Smith are currently battling it out in teams to see who can lose the most weight for charity.
The English Patient
The English
Patient
Reflections of yesterday....
by Mark Sheppard and Joyce Raven
It soon became apparent that with the tremendous amount of injuries sustained on the
battlefields during the First World War that a large amount of Red Cross Hospitals would be
required for the soldiers to recuperate. From the outset of the war, large commodious
buildings were requisitioned, such as ‘Oakeden’ opened 17th December 1914, and
Wharmton Towers, and Ashway Gap all at Greenfield, which also became the Saddleworth
Red Cross Hospital in January 1916.
Dukinfield, Denton, Mossley, and also Ryecroft Hall, Audenshaw (donated by Austin
Hopkinson), had one each, with the latter being one of the leading hospitals. Oldham had
three, as did Ashton under Lyne. The one in Stalybridge was ‘Early Bank’, then situated next
to Bower Fold. A Victorian gothic mansion built in 1857 for James Kirk, a cotton
manufacturer, and later lived in by Harry Gartside, a brewery director of Gartsides Brookside
Brewery, Ashton under Lyne, whose grand-father John Gartside had founded
the Matley Spring Brewery in 1837, at the bottom of what is now, Woodend
Lane (1936) Stalybridge, originally Brewery Lane, and off Blundering Lane.
Soon after his death, in March 1909, Early Bank was acquired by Dr.Philip
Talbot and his wife. In October 1914, Early Bank was being prepared for a
hospital, and on the 2nd November, the house was opened for inspection, and
Early Bank and Hough Hill
became a Red Cross Military Hospital. The first arrival of wounded soldiers
from the trenches arrived here on the 6th November, 1914. At Christmas that
year all sorts of presents were delivered to the hospital such as foul, hares, rabbits, brandy and fresh eggs. Visitors were allowed access every Saturday between 2.00-
4.30pm. However, it soon became apparent that the hospital was not big
enough to cope with the influx of wounded soldiers. A torpedo had sunk the
Lusitania ship in May 1915, with some people throughout the district, suffering
a personal loss for one reason or another.
‘Early Bank’ was not sufficient, having treated over 100 soldiers, and an empty
residence the ‘Old Hall ‘at nearby Mottram in Longdendale, its last tenant being
Mr. Roscoe, would be offered for use as a hospital. The staff and patients
would all be transferred to the ‘Old Hall’. On the 1st June 1915, saw the arrival
of 22 wounded soldiers at Mottram Old Hall, only a few days landed from
France. With the exception of one, all were severe surgical cases, under the
watchful eye of Dr. Awburn. Hundreds and hundreds of patients passed
through the hospital, and throughout those in the district, such as the two at
Glossop, being Patrington and Moorfield. As before, local people offered food
parcels, beds, gifts, and help, to maintain the hospital.
With the end of the War in November 1918, the guns fell silent, and Mottram
Old Hall finally closed as a hospital on Wednesday 30th April 1919, the last 15
patients would be evacuated, and that final evening, tea’s supper, games, and
presentation’s took place. Miss Elsie Dean of Stalybridge, who had also been a
nurse at Early Bank, and was one of the staff, would be congratulated by Queen
Alexander and the Duchess of Westminster likewise.
The English Patient
Red Cross Hospital, Early Bank
Early Bank, Mottram Road, Stalybridge
Another woman, 82-year-old Mrs Martha Smith, who lived at Swan Houses
opposite Bower Fold, spent a total of 468 hours, first at Early Bank, then the
Old Hall Hospital, Mottram, darning thousands of pairs of socks for the injured
soldiers, this would be documented by the Red Cross.
Ashway Gap, Greenfield
On the 21st May 1919, at 1.30pm, an auction took place at the Old Hall, which
included 20 bedsteads, 18 hardwood chairs, sheets, pillars, socks, shirts,
towels, and a billiard table were just some of the items.
The Saddleworth Red Cross Hospital at Ashway Gap, Greenfield, closed on the
17th February 1919, as did another chapter in our local history, but one of
great importance and dedication, by all those involved. As we remember over
100 years ago, the great sacrifice given by our ‘Brothers-in-arms’.
Early Bank house, Stalybridge, continued as a residence and for many years,
was the home of the Lady of the Manor, (Lancashire side, Stamford Estates)
Mrs. C. Grey , who on her removal to Malton, Yorkshire in November 1953,
offered the property to the town council of Stalybridge, who declined it. It was
then quickly bought by a private developer, who demolished the house in the
summer of 1954, and built houses on the site, and in the gardens. Today only
the original outbuildings and lodge remain, as well the houses. Ashway Gap at
Greenfield suffered the same fete, and was demolished in 1981, thankfully
Mottram Old Hall remains to this day, as a much loved private residence.
Made famous by comedian Micky Flanagan, the term 'Going Out Out' may not have
FUNKY FITNESS & FUN CREW
Ready for the New Year ahead
by Carita Smith
We are enjoying our new base at the Satellite Centre in Greenfield; We visited Ikea for some new things and Rob has been busy building new store
cupboards.
Again we have been busy out and about in the community. We have visited some
fabulous places and have been made very welcome; we can certainly vouch for many
of the lovely tea rooms around Saddleworth!
A highlight for us was a visit to the fairy sanctuary in Delph, it was a magical
experience. We also joined a fun workshop in the Cellar Pot Cafe with the lovely Jenny,
who was dressed as a Christmas Tree and made some lovely Christmas decorations.
I think we told you last time we were looking forward to a visit from Dogs for Good;
Cathy, one of their volunteer
puppy socialisers, visited us and
brought two of her dogs, Frankie
and Zebedee. We had a lovely
afternoon and learned a lot, with
our members asking some very
interesting questions. Following
the visit we are delighted to say
we are now sponsoring a puppy
and look forward to sharing news
about the puppy with you. Once
fully trained, the dogs support people with additional needs and are able to help with everyday tasks, for example, crossing the
road, taking laundry out of the washing machine and picking up items from the floor.
Oldham Chiropractors came along to the Centre and delivered a useful and informative interactive presentation on posture,
showing us all the best ways to sit, stand and lie down in bed. We were given a stretchy band to do some exercises to practice
and develop better posture. It's always a pleasure to see Hannah and her colleagues and learn from them.
Sarah from Inspire Languages ran a French language session, and we practiced our numbers and had an amazing afternoon of
fun. Our friends Jen and Dawn from Dance Syndrome came along for a visit, it was lovely to see them again and swap ideas, we
are looking forward to working with them during the coming year. Jenny performed some interactive dancing. Part of the purpose
of their most recent visit was to meet Richard, who wants to help people set up their own enterprises and came along to hear our
experiences.
Since we last spoke to you we have had a few trips out. We have
been to Hebden Bridge and Albert Dock; we have had a farm visit and
cinema and theatre trips. We also visited the Velodrome in
Manchester, some lovely garden centres and markets. Our members
loved Hard Graft's production of Pinocchio performed at the Oldham
Library. We are already looking forward to future productions by
Mark at Hard Graft.
reasonable prices.
Have you been to the new cinema in Oldham, it's a great venue; we
enjoyed seeing the movie The Trolls. We combined our visit to the
theatre with a visit to the Molino Lounge and were delighted to be
made so welcome; it was lovely to relax and enjoy lovely food at very
Health and nutrition are very important to us here at Funky Fitness, we continue to enjoy regular supermarket shopping
trips, choosing lovely healthy items which we cook for our lunches.
As you know our members love to show off their many talents and I am delighted to say that we have taken part in a
couple more shows recently, and received great reviews. We performed at Talbot House, Manchester, a charity supporting
parents and carers. Our members showcased their own dance routines to some popular 1940s numbers; we did some
magic, incorporating a poem and performance on the real meaning of Christmas. Along with Barbara Ann, author of the
Policeman Pete books, we performed our
dramatised version of The Cheeky Magpie
to the children of Diggle School. It's a
challenging and interactive way to bring
the characters of the book to life and was
thoroughly enjoyed by all. We hope to
work with Barbara and other local schools
during 2017.
We are very proud of Mikey, one of our members, he was involved in the hugely successful production
of the Grinch at the Grange Theatre during December.
Mindful of other people not as fortunate as ourselves; we went shopping one day to buy food for the
homeless which was distributed on our behalf. We also plan to visit the food bank on Clegg Street in
Oldham, delivering much needed items and hope to develop closer links with the charities during
2017.
So, 2016 was very busy, 2017 promises to be just as busy and exciting for us here at Funky Fitness
and Fun. Keep a look out for us and do say "hello". We do enjoy our little chats when we are out and
WILLOW WOOD
PETER WOOD, MBE
Willow Wood are deeply saddened to announce the death of founder member and trustee Peter Wood, MBE. Peter
embodied the spirit and the ideals of the Hospice movement, and we are all deeply saddened by his passing.
Peter was a true gentleman in every sense of the word, and it is largely due to his vision and his hard work that Willow
Wood exists at all. As a member of the Hyde Rotary Club back in the 1990’s, Peter was at the forefront of the campaign
to raise funds and build Willow Wood
He became a Trustee of Willow Wood in 1992, a position which he retained until the end; indeed, he was still working five
days a week as the Finance Director at the beginning of October. Peter was a volunteer in this role, and no-one could have
demonstrated more commitment and dedication. Karen Houlston, chief executive of Willow Wood said “Peter was a true
friend, he was our rock. As one of the founders of Willow Wood we thank him for providing us with such a loving, warm and caring place, it was fitting he should be with
us in his last days, benefitting from the care he so passionately believed. My sincere condolences go to his family.”
Peter believed in leading from the front, and would never ask anyone to do anything he wouldn't do himself. This followed through into his fundraising. He completed
four marathons for Willow Wood, a parachute jump and took part in our first firewalk. He even took part in a fun run dressed as a Willow tree!
His charity work was recognized back in 2007 when he was awarded a very well deserved MBE. Peter was also given the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch when it
passed through Tameside.
Peter had a long and illustrious career in industry, following service in the RAF. He was appointed Company Secretary and Finance
Director at local company Chloride Ferrostatics back in 1963 and became Managing Director in 1971, staying with the company until
his retirement. He then joined the Rotary Club and the rest is history!
A loving family man, nothing gave Peter more pleasure than to spend time with his wife Mavis, his three lovely daughters, his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pat McCloskey, Chairman of Willow Wood said “Willow Wood would not have existed today if it had not been for his vision,
dedication and loyalty. Peter has left us all a fantastic legacy and it is now our responsibility to protect that legacy and enhance it
where we can. On behalf of everyone associated with Willow Wood past and present I would like to express our deepest sympathy
to Mavis and all the Wood family. Peter is gone, but will never be forgotten.”
It’s often said when we lose someone that we will not see their like again, but it is certainly true of Peter Wood, MBE. We will all
miss you, more than words can say.
COPLEY PUPILS PREPARE BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS
Pupils from Copley Academy in Tameside have spent the day at homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley to
support their homeless outreach project.
On Thursday 8 December students from Copley Academy visited Emmaus Mossley’s base at Longlands Mill
to bag up essential winter items for people who are street homeless. Eight young people aged between 14
and 15 gave their time to prepare over 100 bags filled with socks, hats, gloves, coats, fleeces, jumpers and
personal care items.
Bethany Nuttall, pupil at Copley Academy, said: “Visiting Emmaus was really good and very educational. It
widened my knowledge of all the tiny struggles homeless people go through every day – whether it’s being
cold and hungry or the struggle to cope on your own with no help. “Emmaus offers lots of help to those in
need. They offer lots of advice, help people build themselves back up and allow them to get qualifications and
start a fresh. The staff and companions are lovely and are very encouraging and motivational.”
The bags will be distributed by volunteers from Emmaus Mossley to people who are street homeless in
Manchester City Centre. The volunteers regularly travel to the city centre to give out hot curry (donated by
Indian Ocean), tea, coffee, clothes, sleeping bags and essential items to people living on the streets.
Copley pupils helping at Emmaus
Ali Hill, Director of Emmaus Mossley, said: “We were so impressed with the work, behaviour and
achievements of the Copley Academy pupils who supported us on the day. Everyone at Emmaus Mossley is
delighted with the 100 bags they managed to put together for our outreach project – an amazing effort in a
short space of time.”
Emmaus Mossley supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home and work in a
community setting. The charity runs a social enterprise in Mossley, selling donated and upcycled furniture,
household goods and vintage wares.
ROTARY FASHION SHOW COMES
TO TOWN!
A glamorous Fashion Show was held at the White Hart on
Wednesday 16th November. The event was hosted by Saddleworth
Rotary Club and featured designer ladies wear, elegantly presented
by Decisions of Ashton-Under-Lyne.
The shop is known locally for its excellent selection of high quality
clothes and accessories at affordable prices and also its friendly,
helpful staff. A bevy of glamorous models strutted their stuff down
the cat walk, accompanied by the Rotary Clubs' own collection of
handsome male models in their dinner suits!
Indeed, the highlight of the
night was the clothes presented to the anthem, "It's Raining Men"! The Grand Festive finale featured the Decisions models with their
Rotary Counterparts, suitably attired in cheerful Christmas Jumpers.
The Event, which was organised and compered by Gill Bussey, ably assisted by her husband, Bill was very successful. The Fashion
Show was a lot of fun for all and the proceeds were significantly supplemented by an auction and raffle - which the audience
contributed to most generously. The Rotary Club would like to thank Face and Body and Fletcher's Florists of Grotton, as well as Eden
Florists of Uppermill for their generosity. Several Rotary
members also donated prizes.
At the end of the evening, The Rotary Club was delighted to have
made £900 which will go towards its charities and community
projects.
NEW YEAR REPORT
At the first meeting of the year for the Saddleworth W.I on the 4th January, which
took place at the Saddleworth Hotel, they presented a cheque of £3000 to their
outgoing charity, Transport for Sick Children which was a fantastic achievement.
They also welcomed their new charity, Saddleworth Sports Youth and Community
the battle of the brains in their popular January quiz with quizmaster Paul Norfolk.
and see what the W.I. is all about.
At the 1st February meeting, Kerry Newton, independent consultant with the health,
wellness, skincare and beauty company Arbonne, will give the ladies a brief insight
into the company sharing with them their luxurious products which are purely
botanically based and free of animal testing. There will be plenty of time after the
talk to sample all the ranges.
On Wednesday, 1st March, Fran Pridham will talk to the ladies about the beauty and
culture of Madagascar plus her experiences working with local inhabitants helping
to build better irrigation
systems and clean water wells.
There will be an opportunity at
the meeting to donate towards
this very worthy cause.
updates before attending the meeting.
The W.I popular sub-groups meet on a monthly basis and are a great way to make
new friends of all ages. Once again please visit their website and Facebook page for
Weddings
Congratulations Heather and David
On Saturday 6th August 2016, David Howe married Heather Marshall at Christ Church Friezland, and was officiated by Rev. Cannon Sharon Jones. This was followed by a
lavish reception at The Saddleworth Hotel.
The wedding party included Heather’s parents Ian and Lesley
Marshall as well as David's parents David and Pam. Best Man
duties fell to Sam Howe, who did a magnificent job ensuring the
day went as smoothly as possible. The Ushers went to Chris
Marshall, James Bradshaw, Rob Ward & Jason Saxon, who again,
were all superb throughout. Heather's Matron of Honour was
dutifully performed by Helen Broadhurst and her Bridesmaids
were Sarah Shaw, Amy Wells, Eppie Nicholls & Katie Marshall
who all looked lovely.
The Bride wore a stunning Roland Joyce dress which was
certainly a show stopper. The grand princess soft tulle ball gown
had an elegently presented swarovski dusted corset and was
finished off with a dramatically bushelled 6ft train with delicate
swarovski roses. It was accompanied by a 15ft hand made
swarovski edged veil with scattered crystals created made by the
mother of the bride.
The Bridesmaids wore traditional timeless elegant A line claret
gown. which were created by a private designer. In addition the
gentlemen wore traditional Edwardian tuxedo tailcoat suits,
accompanied by top hats groom wore a three piece tailor made
bespoke suit by Slaters Menswear.
The couple's amazing Wedding cake was created by Clare Moreland Artisan Chef. The
impressive 4ft pearlised cake had alternating layers luxury pearlised icing with elegant
detailing to complex sugar crystal work. A magnificent sweep of over 250 swarovski crystal
brooches embracing the cake from top to bottom. The hand made swarovski monogram
cake topper was crafted by local artist Sarah Shaw.
The Wedding flowers were expertly designed by Bloom'in Lovely of Lees. Heather held a
stunning luxury hand tied boquet of claret roses & Cala lilies enveloped in black feathers,
tied with the Marshall family tartan, whilst the Bridesmaids carried red roses with black
feathers.
During the service, the bride was gifted a 1ct platinum princess cut diamond ring as her
wedding present from the groom. The groom's Wedding band and twelve diamond half
eternity rings were crafted by Alexander jewellers.
The whole day was captured perfectly by Steve of Studio 3000 in Stalybridge. The classic Wedding cars included a luxury Maserati for the Groom and a Rolls Rouce
Phantom for the Bride were also supplied by the Saddleworth Hotel, another reason this is the venue of choice for so many newlyweds. The wedding bus by Belleview
wedding hire was on hand to transport the guests to the hotel.
Special mentions must go to the brides mum who painstakingly crafted the 15ft veil, and even hand stitched every last Swarovski! The Saddleworth hotel, have been good
family friend to Heathers family for many years, so without their expertise they would not have had the wedding of the year. Kind mentions must also go to Mr Paul 'boots'
Errock 'the most honest man in the country' for his heart felt special support and contributions. Finally to Tony Seel for his beautiful speech which didn't leave a dry eye in
the house.
The happy couple minimooned straight after the wedding to the Sensatori Dominican Republic and then took an extended honeymoon to Sensatori Mexico at christmas.
The whole team at the Around Saddleworth & Tameside Magazine would like to take this opportunity in wishing Heather and David a long and happy life together.
Weddings
Congratulations Louise and Bryn
On Friday 18th November 2016, Bryn Chapman married Louise Brennan at a beautiful service held at the picturesque Clough Manor in Denshaw. The weather was certainly
not favourable earlier in the day as heavy snow fell, but as luck would have it, everything was able to proceed as planned. The service was officiated by the Superintendent
and Deputy Registrar Metropolitan borough of Oldham. The guests
then enjoyed a lavish reception at the venue.
Emma Stelfox. Each were chocolate or vanilla in flavour and individually created with
rose patterned decoration including butterflies. The whole wedding reception was
perfectly captured by Phil Wareing Photography and guests.
At the joyous reception there was live entertainment including band, REWIND
featuring Billy T Lowthian, Peter Smith and Andy Troman. There were also live
performances by groom Bryn . with his hit, 'Delph has got no shops,' as well as
The wedding party included Louise's Uncle, Mr. Gilbert Symes,
who proudly gave her away on behalf of her late Mother and
Father Margaret and Ken Whitehead. The Grooms Mother Mrs
Barbara Chapman was also in attendance.
The honour of best man was given to Mark Stelfox and Gareth
Chapman, who both did a magnificent job throughout the
wedding. The role of chief bridesmaid was dutifully performed by
Helen Samuels and ring bearer for the couple was Bryn's
daughter Lily.
The bride wore a stunning full length evening pewter sequined
gown, which complimented Lily's dress, whilst Helen wore a
lovely black designer cocktail dress. The gentlemen all looked
tremendously dapper in designer petrol blue suits.
During the ceremony the couple exchanged wedding rings by
Hammond's of York featuring Whitby Jet and White Gold. Sue of
Fletcher's Florists in Grotton expertly designed the flowers which
included White Calla Lilies and matching Button holes.
Film Review
Another Great Year of Cinema
By Mike Kemble
Looking forward over the calendar year things look tantilisingly promising as a whole host of cinematic releases are due to hit the big screen. Sci-fi
lovers will be in for a real treat with some massively anticipated follow-ups due for release, with spring seeing Ridley Scott’s follow-up to Prometheus
in Alien: Covenant, which is a prequel sequel if that makes any sense? Sometime later in the year sees another Ridley Scott associated feature with
the long-awaited and overdue Blade Runner 2049, set 30 years after the original and again starring Harrison Ford along with Ryan Gosling this time
around. No doubt the Sci-fi spectacular year will close with Star Wars: Episode VIII and what will more than likely be the biggest hit of 2017 as the
story re-centres on Luke Skywalker and his return from self-exile. However, the release of the film will be tinged with sadness following the passing of
Carrie Fischer over Christmas. Carrie played the icon character Princess Leia, and was a favourite amongst fans and co-stars alike.
Comedic gems to look forward to over the year include Baywatch, with Dwain ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Zac Efron in fine form. While Woody Harrelson
goes back to his roots in Lost in London, which will be his first foray in the director’s chair as he shares with us his personal exploits from 2002
culminating in a night in the cells. Sequels will continue to dominate the headlines again with the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Fast and Furious
8 (how many more you ask). And whisper it, but the un-deadly follow-up to World War Z is coming with Director David Fincher, along with Brad Pitt
in the lead role again.
Those of a more serious disposition have some crackers on the cards, with the likes of T2: Trainspotting (further mentioned below). An as yet untitled
repairing of Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day Lewis who last got together in the magnificent ‘There Will Be Blood’ (2007). A further offering
from the waning master Terence Malick in Weightless featuring a stellar
cast in Ryan Gosling, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Michael
Fassbender, Christian Bale, Rooney Mara and Benicio del Toro. While my
personal favourite director, Michael Haneke reunites with Isabelle
Huppert, who seems to be having a late flurry of fantastic parts in her
twilight years, in Happy End about a not-so-happy story that has the
migrant crisis as the backdrop and will no doubt frame this setting
against telling questions relating to our ignorance, disposition and worth
as human beings.
Films to look out for over the coming months...
A Monster Calls (6th January) A lovely children’s fantasy drama that will even have
adults in tears, about a young boy finding his way in life through a most unlikely ally
in an ancient monster (voiced by Liam Neeson).
Manchester by the Sea (13th January): Casey Affleck stars as an affected loner, who
suddenly finds himself the sole guardian of his 16 year old nephew in this emotional
story about loss, grief and coming to terms with life’s difficulties.
T2: Trainspotting (27th January): Twenty years on from the original and the crew are
back as we catch-up with Begbie, Renton, Sick Boy and Spud in probably the most
eagerly anticipated British film in years.
Loving (3rd February): Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga star in this real-life retelling of
an interracial couple who fought all the way to the Supreme Court in 1967 to ensure
their right to marry and live as a family, and thereby setting the precedent for all
future generations to come.
The Handmaiden (17th February): Old Boy director, Park Chan-wook tries his hand
at an altogether more different film in this sumptuous study of love and deception in
what looks like another visually stunning piece of film making.
Happy New Year and see you next time!
Bailey Laine Nominated for Gift of the Year 2017
Company Celebrates First Birthday and Industry Recognition
Saddleworth home furnishings and apparel brand, Bailey Laine, has been nominated for the
Giftware Association’s Gift of the Year 2017. The brand’s lambswool throws and decorative
cushions are nominated in the Made in UK category. The news comes as the Delph-based
business celebrates its first year of trading and a series of notable listings in some of the UK’s
best independent home furnishing stores.
Company founder, Katie Mallalieu launched the brand in July 2015 with a range of luxury wool
cushions and has developed the range to include lampshades, throws and women’s capes
made from the finest wool. A keen advocate of supporting women in business, SMEs and
British manufacturing, Katie has been recognised by her peers having received Jacqueline
Gold CBE’s Woman of the Week (#WOW Award) in August 2015. Katie says: “Following my
departure from teaching, I worked for my family’s wool manufacturing business (Mallalieus of
Delph). After some months, I realised I wanted to combine Mallalieus’ wool manufacturing
expertise and experience with my creative side and Bailey Laine was born. “Our first year of
trading has been hard work but reaped many rewards. We’ve been successful in expanding
our product lines and have secured listings in independent stores across the country. “All of
our products are manufactured in the UK at Mallalieus of Delph and are made using their
British Woollen fabrics. I’m very proud to be celebrating our first year as a truly British luxury
home furnishings brand and the Gift of the Year nomination tops it all off.”
The Gift of the Year awards are organised by the Giftware Association which has been
supporting suppliers and retailers in the gift and home industry since 1947. The awards
recognise new and innovative products across 22 categories with the final winners
announced on 5 February 2017.
Katie goes on to say: “Feedback from retail stores and customers has been so positive that
we’ll be launching new designs in our popular lambswool throws in 2017. We’re looking
forward to growing; further developing our range and continuing to be a part of promoting the
British textile industry.”
2017 News from the Saddleworth Parish
Council
Uppermill Civic Hall Host Open Day
On the 18th December, the newly refurbished and extended Civic Hall in Uppermill held an Open Day to showcase how the venue could
be used to host everything from Weddings to Conferences, Concerts and Parties. Within the large venue visitors could view each of the
following rooms which had been set up for a wedding to give them an idea....
THE COUNCIL CHAMBER
Although the entire building is licensed for weddings, this room is the most popular for wedding ceremonies. The Civic Hall can
accommodate up to 90 guests and provide white chair covers, if required. Because of the vast range of colours available they are unable
to provide the chair sashes. The bride and groom are free to decorate the room as they wish and bring their own music. This is the room
where the Council holds its monthly meetings and is ideal for larger meetings or small conferences of up to 30 people. The room is fitted
with a hearing loop and a full conference microphone system is available to hire, if required, along with a projector, screen and laptop.
THE BALLROOM
The Ballroom is the largest of the rooms in the Civic Hall and together with the bar and the upstairs kitchen provides an ideal venue for
weddings, conferences, exhibitions, dinners, dances, and many varied classes and activities. This multifunctional room is a ‘blank
canvas’ for the hirer to decorate and dress the room to their choice. A fully operational sound and lighting system is installed and may be
adjusted to suit the various activities. Access via the lift in the
foyer, or by the ramp at the back of the building is available for
anyone with disability problems. Ladies, Gents and Disabled toilets
Saddleworth Parish Cllr Chairman
Mrs Pam Byrne in the Council
Chamber
along with baby changing facilities are accessible from the ballroom level. A full conference microphone system is available
to hire, if required, along with a projector, screen and laptop. The ballroom can comfortably seat up to 440 people for a
concert and 120 for a sit down meal.
THE LOWER HALLS
The two lower halls at ground floor level are the ideal spaces for smaller functions and classes such as buffets, lectures,
lunches etc. The kitchen adjacent to the halls provides easy access to catering from a full meal to tea and biscuits. The
halls may be used as two separate rooms divided by a sliding partition and improved access is now available from the front
of the building. A full conference microphone system is available to hire, if required, along with a projector, screen and
laptop.
THE CHAIRMAN’S ROOM
Designed as a quiet working space for the Chairman of the Parish Council this room, with its en-suite shower room, also
doubles as a changing room for our artistes and/or the bride and groom. It is ideal to hire for
small meetings of up to 10 people and also for conducting interviews.
THE NEW SECOND FLOOR EXTENSION
Three new rooms have now been created on the second floor of the building, carpeted and
decorated to a high standard, these are now available for classes and meetings. One large
room, two smaller rooms and a small kitchen are now in use and available for hire. A full
conference microphone system is available to hire, if required, along with a projector, screen
and laptop.
Children at a Marsden school are getting their first experience of
playing music with a brand new set of recorders.
The organisers of the Marsden Jazz Festival have donated 30
recorders to Marsden Junior School to help mark the festival’s 25th
anniversary. Pupils at the school got a taste of playing music with
homemade musical instruments in the ‘Big Noise’ street parade at
this year’s festival, which also featured three of the UK’s leading
street bands.
Festival Producer Barney Stevenson said: “We had a fantastic festival
this year and wanted to do something to help inspire local children to
become our headline performers of the future. Many of the children
who first visited the festival with their families have gone on to play
Children at Marsden Junior School with Marsden Jazz Festival volunteer Kate
Button, teacher Lil Adamson, and school principal Sarah Mansell.
in school bands on our outdoor stages, and some have even returned years later as professional jazz artists. “The staff and children at Marsden Junior School are always
really supportive of the festival, and this year allowed us to use the playground for parking. “We’re really pleased we’ve been able to donate the recorders which we hope
will be used by children for years to come to get their first taste of performing music.”
Over 100 gigs took place in Marsden during one weekend in October for the village’s 25th jazz festival, including over 80 free gigs and events as well as performances by
internationally-acclaimed artists. Jazz legend Digby Fairweather appeared at Marsden’s first jazz festival in 1992 and returned to Marsden this year for his ‘Rocking in
Rhythm’ show alongside BBC Radio 2’s Paul Jones.
Sarah Mansell, Principal at Marsden Junior School, said “We are extremely happy with our class set of recorders. Music is a subject that engages the whole brain. We are
thrilled to engage all our children with music, creating opportunities and supporting the rich musical heritage that the children are exposed to in Marsden."
Marsden Jazz Festival was named ‘Outstanding Established Festival’ at the Yorkshire Gig Guide Grassroots Awards 2015, and thousands of music lovers make their way to
Marsden by train, bus, car and narrow boat every year for the festival weekend.
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION HAS A LONG TERM HOME FOR
SADDLEWORTH GROUP
A new exhibition representing local professional and amateur photographers has
taken place in Saddleworth which started in mid December, and will be hosted by the
Council for at least the coming year.
More than seventeen photographers from the Saddleworth Photography Group
displayed their best personal work at The Civic Hall in Uppermill began from 18th
December. The exhibition, which is free to view, features over 40 images in a range
of photographic styles including portrait, landscape, experimental and art.
Saddleworth Photography Group has been operational for two years and has near on
200 members. It sets weekly practical challenges to help photographers learn from
their own practice and from that of others. The group provides a sounding board for
members to ask questions and give feedback. This is their second exhibition.
Why you shouldn’t read the manual first
So Santa has been generous and brought you a shiny new camera for Christmas. Perhaps you’re an experienced photographer, who will quickly get to grips with this new
piece of advanced technology: in which case you can probably stop reading here and we’ll wish you a Happy New Year!
On the other hand, perhaps this is your first more advanced camera, and you’re feeling a bit perplexed. If that sounds like you, then we’ve got one or two tips that might
help.
Firstly, don’t try to read and digest the whole manual (which, by the way, you might have to download) in one go. If you’re not familiar with the terminology, you’ll end up
bewildered and disheartened, and feeling that you’ll never understand. Do read as far as charging and inserting the battery and putting the memory card in your new
camera, or you won’t be able to do anything.
We’d then suggest that once you’ve done that, you find out what the automatic setting is on the dial. On a Canon, it will probably be a green rectangle, with an A or ‘Auto in
it or next to it. On a Nikon, it’s a green picture of a camera, on a Panasonic it’s called i-auto and so-on. Check the manual if you’re not sure, but it should be fairly obvious.
Warning – it’s not the same as a plain white ‘A’ , which we’ll come to shortly. Then take some photos! Nothing will motivate you more to understand your camera than
seeing some images and thinking about what you’d like to improve – or indeed whether you’re quite happy with them as they are.
Now back them up! It’s a good discipline to get into, backing every image up onto your computer, an external hard drive, or the Cloud – or all three. There’s lots of advice
on-line if you’re not sure about how to do it, but it’s a true saying that that there are two types of people – those who back up and those who wish they had. We’ve heard
too many stories of irreplaceable photographs being lost when a card gets lost or a hard drive fails.
After a while taking ‘auto’ shots, you’re ready to dive into a bit more detail. You could read the manual at this stage, but we’d suggest you dip into YouTube first, to see
what other people are doing with, and saying about, your particular model. When you get to something you don’t understand, or when you feel you want a bit more detail,
then have a look at the manual. That way you will get to read the bits of the manual you need, but you
won’t be overwhelmed by trying to get your head around it all in one go. Like the dial in the picture (a
Canon) your dial will have some modes like close-up (the flower), sport (runner), portrait (heads) etc,
and that’s a good place to go next. Try them all and see what they do – again checking with the manual
to make sure you understand.
For lots of people, that’s as far as they want to go, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, you
might come to the point where the photograph you’ve taken using one of the pre-set modes isn’t quite
what you wanted or hoped for. That’s where you need to take more control of your camera, and that’s
what we’ll talk about next time, starting with A for Aperture!
Meanwhile, happy snapping!
Lifestyle
How to control your eating after Christmas!
Calories don’t control metabolism — hormones do. Calories don’t determine what type of weight you will lose and where you
may lose it from — hormones do. Calories have little influence over hunger, cravings, energy and mood — but hormones do.
So how do you use this to change your eating habits, for good!
When you start off on a hormonal approach to fat loss, you realize that eating becomes a matter of eating more of the right things rather than
less of anything. And because everyone is different, the right things can vary from person to person so you have to customize your plan so it
works effectively for you.
Have you tried a ton of programs, and still can’t find the solution?
This is because most of us continue to take a calories-first approach rather than a hormones-first approach to diet change.
The first step in a hormones-first approach is to begin eating not a lower calorie diet, but a smarter calorie diet.
• Start by eating as much lean protein as you like, as many low-sugar fruits as you wish (e.g., apples, pears, berries), and unlimited amounts of non-starchy vegetables.
• Then limit all starchy foods to no more than five to 15 bites at each of the three major meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner).
• From there, learn to pay attention to how hungry you feel from meal to meal, what the strength and prevalence of your cravings are, and how much energy you have.
• Then rank these sensations on a 1-to-10 scale, with 1 being low and 10 being high.
The ideal state is for hunger and cravings to both be less than 5, and for energy to be 6 or better.
The HEC score (pronounced “heck” for hunger, energy and cravings).
If any one of these biofeedback sensations does not meet this criterion, the detective work continues. Starches may be adjusted up or down. Timing starches in the morning or post-workout may
be considered. Fat and dairy foods may be increased, decreased or eliminated. Eating frequency may be adjusted. The goal is to eat in a way that balances these HEC sensations first. When you
do, you know this way of eating can be maintained forever.
Once HEC is balanced, then it is time to see if you are losing fat. If you are successful, you have just found your fat-loss formula. If you are not, it is time to play detective again. You must once
again adjust your diet accordingly. Meal frequency, fat content, starchy carbohydrate bites and other dietary parameters are adjusted until the inches begin to decrease. The ultimate goal is HEC
balanced and fat loss achieved. This approach requires you being a detective, not a dieter.
When you are losing fat and HEC is balanced, you have found a lifestyle for body change that can be followed forever, rather than a diet you do
temporarily. It is now time to assess calories. This is where people are very surprised. They often find that without even trying — and without
the typical starvation response of a calories-first approach — they are naturally in a calorie deficit. Less frequently, they may find they are
consuming more calories on average than they were previously. Either way, it does not matter because they are in a balanced metabolic state
and losing weight. Calories are irrelevant.
1. Change your approach to eating more foods that suppress hunger, control cravings and elevate energy. We call these “fat-loss
foods,” not because they have magic fat-burning
properties, but because they make it more likely you can achieve the two
requirements for fat loss — balanced hormones and a caloric deficit.
2. Measure your HEC score daily, and adjust your diet so that you achieve hunger and cravings consistently below 5 and energy
consistently above 6.
3. Measure fat loss. This is most easily accomplished by assessing inches lost, not pounds shed. If you are not losing fat, adjust
your food approach while maintaining your HEC
score in the balanced zone. Be the detective, not the dieter.
4. When you have achieved a balanced HEC score and fat loss, you have found what I call your “metabolic effect.”
Contribute to the history of Emmaus Mossley
Homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley is appealing for contributions from anyone who has
had a connection to the charity over the past 20 years.
Did you help raise funds to kick start Emmaus Mossley? Were you a customer in their first
shop on Manchester Road? Did you help out in the refurbishment and transformation of their
Longlands Mill base? Have you volunteered at Emmaus?
If so, Emmaus Mossley is appealing for stories from friends, supporters, customers, past
companions and volunteers, neighbours in Mossley and people who have helped to make the
charity what it is today.
2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Emmaus Mossley and one of the projects they are
working on this year is an in-depth history of the charity. This will be compiled and published
in a book which will be available later in the year.
Frances Hirst, Chair of Emmaus Mossley, said: “If you have a recollection you would like to
share then we would love to hear from you. This could be a fond memory you have, a piece
about your involvement in the charity or a funny event that happened at Emmaus Mossley. At
this stage we are open to any contribution you may have.”
Emmaus Mossley supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home and
work in a community setting. The charity runs a social enterprise in Mossley, selling donated
and upcycled furniture, household goods and vintage wares.
REUBEN’S RETREAT RAISES THE ROOF (AND INSTALLS IT TOO!)
Reuben’s Retreat is delighted to announce that they have completed the
3rd phase of their epic building project - the roof! The fundraising for
the extensive roof was one of the most crucial phases of the project in
order to make the building safe, warm and watertight.
The North West based charity has been staggered by the sheer speed
of the fundraising effort which has enabled them to carry out works
totalling £210,000. As always, Reuben’s Retreat has relied heavily on
local businesses who have been instrumental in not only installing the
roof but remaining as close to its heritage as possible. More
importantly they have worked alongside the charity to keep costs right
down and deliver within 15 weeks.
Renowned firm LJ Roofing carried out the works supported by the amazing team at Carter
Scaffolding. The finishings including pointing and painting were carried out by experts Weatherpoint
and Delaney’s respectively. Thanks are also due to International Timber who provided beneficial rates for the all-important roof battens. A phenomenal 60% of the roof tiles
have been restored from the original tiles and many of the broken slates, which date back to 1889, have now been placed at Reuben’s resting place, linking the project to
the inspiration behind the charity, Reuben Michael Graham who passed away in 2012 aged just 23 months.
Reuben’s Retreat was set up by parents Nicola and Mike Graham following the sad loss of their youngest son Reuben. The family were determined that his death would not
be in vain and wanted to help other families who had lost a child, or who have a child with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses, by creating a place of solace and
comfort as well as happiness. Based in Glossop, Reuben’s Retreat will be somewhere families can
relax, recharge, remember and start to rebuild their lives.
Nicola Graham, Founder of Reuben’s Retreat and Reuben’s Mummy comments:
‘We are eternally grateful to the companies and kind hearts that have been involved in this project
from start to finish. Each any every one of the suppliers have been both efficient and wholly
supportive of our charity and its inspiration.’ Indeed, at the Reuben’s Retreat Annual Ball in Summer,
guests were invited to inscribe their own slate with a personal message in memory of Reuben and in
support of Reuben’s Retreat. Nicola was given the honour of laying the first roof tile inscribed by her
family and continues: ‘We are overwhelmed with the number of tiles inscribed with a personal
message. Our roof truly reflects everything we are trying to achieve through hard work, dedication
and love. Both Reuben’s name and his brother Isaac’s were also inscribed in the roof battens near his
tile and we are pleased that their names will live on for many years to come at the heart of our
Retreat.’
so Ian's knowledge and enthusiasm
basically stemmed from there.
Ian and his small team undertake everything from commercial and domestic to
insurance work. He also performs stone work, patios, fish ponds, garden design
and much more. Over the years he has undertaken a great deal of conservation
projects, having worked in conjunction with the National Peak Park on numerous
occasions, as well as alteration and restoration with the Church of England. They
are also specialists in Water Divining and are happy to undertake any land drainage
investigation work.
Ian employs a small team of specialist construction workers, who together ensure
that the job is completed to an exceptional high standard. Wilstone can offer
a variety of briefs.
So whether you have a tumbled wall needing repair or are considering having a
New Year giggles a plenty with....
Saddleworth's
Off The Rails Comedy Club
2017 has certainly started off with a bang at Greenfield's Off The Rails Comedy Club when promoter, producer, booker,
technical manager and sometime compere Rob Riley was voted Best UK Independent Comedy Promoter by his peers
in the Best Live Stand Up Awards. He said;
"I was deeply honoured to have won but can't help thinking there's going to be a lot more to live up to in 2017!"
Fortunately, the first couple of months in Saddleworth should look after themselves! The first show of the year
features long time OTR favourite Seymour Mace alongside hotly tipped Tez Ilyas. Despite being reltively new to the
circuit Tez has already built a cult following through his 'TEZ Talks' series on Radio 4 as well as numerous TV
appearances on both BBC and Sky. This show is a fundraiser in conjunction with Saddleworth Morris Men and takes
place on Saturday 14th January.
Alistair Barrie
Sunday 29th January sees a special screening of the multi-award winning film 'I,Daniel Blake' with a question and
answer session form the star of the film Dave Johns. Proceeds to Oldham Food Bank's Ancora Project. The film starts
at 5.30pm with ticket prices to be confirmed.
Seeing as Dave was in the area it would have been foolish not to book him in to perform some of his renowned
stand up, so the evening will be given over to Dave and fellow 'I, Daniel Blake' star Gavin Webster with other acts
to be confirmed. Show starts 8pm and tickets are £8.50 each.
Chris Ramsey's tour warm up has been rescheduled from January to Wednesday 3rd
February but it all sold out months ago but you can often find people with spare
tickets to sell on the OTR Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Alistair Barrie and Paul Thorne are both highly respected comedians who regularly
perform at the Leicester Square Comedy Store as well as at comedy clubs and festivals
across the globe and Saturday 4th February will see how they go down with the
Saddleworth crowd! Will Duggan and Rob Riley complete the bill. Show starts 8.30pm
£12 or £10 in advance.
The final show of the Winter season is Sunday 26th February with Brighton's Stephen
Grant appearing here for the very first time, the return of long tome favourite Peter Brush,
newcomer Matt Hoss and 2014 Edinburgh Fringe Panel Prize Winner Phil Ellis comperes.
OLDHAM
HOCKEY
News Update...
Sports Round up
Oldham’s Women’s First XI enjoyed mixed fortunes in
December, losing a hard-fought battle 5-2 against Crewe.
Unfortunately the score line did not reflect the game with
3 Crewe goals following in quick succession at the start
of the second half.
Fortunes turned the following week with Oldham beating
Wilmslow 1s 2-1, despite Wilmslow taking an early lead
in the first half. Two goals by Louise Howard secured
Oldham’s victory.
It was a similar story for Oldham’s 2nd XI. A defeat
against Manchester Uni was followed by a 4-0 victory
against Manchester Manto. Goals were scored by Lauren
Bates, Lorna McGuinness and Jess Perry (2).
The 3rd XI suffered a 1-0 defeat against Didsbury Northern 6ths.
Oldham under 15’s Girls Team
The U15 team played enthusiastically in their first tournament at Timperley with score draws against Bury A and Didsbury Northern and defeats against Timperley and
Bowden. Oldham goals were scored by Regan Lord and Millie Fraser.
The next tournament for juniors is for Under 11 age group on Sunday 29 January 2017 in which Oldham will be entering both male and female teams.
Oldham are actively recruiting new players, male and female from age 7 upwards. If you would like any further details please contact Club
Captain Amanda Smith at amandalousmith@sky.com or club Secretary Laurie Boon at info@oldhamhockey.org
3D Dynamos – Delph, Dobcross & Denshaw
3D Dynamos Celebrating Football in the
Community since 1992
With 2016 now behind us it is time to reflect on another successful year. Adding to that success the club
is now half way through its 25th season.
From humble beginnings the club has maintained a period of steady growth over the years and now successfully runs
teams ranging from our Soccer School (age 4-6) through to our two open age and a Vets teams (over 35’s). All the teams are run by F.A
qualified coaches and all volunteers will be given the opportunity to gain the relevant FA coaching badges required. It is also the clubs mission
statement ‘to provide the local community with a facility for the promotion of football for all age groups with particular emphasis on developing
skills and enjoyment in youth football; striving to balance the achievement of success with the participation of all’ and we are proud to practice
this philosophy throughout the club.
Soccer School – Mark Aston
The continued success and development of the club starts with Mark Aston and the soccer school. Mark creates an environment where the children get to enjoy football
and learn new skills; in many ways it assists with the social side of the child’s development as well as setting them off on a football journey. As well as children playing
football we are also on the lookout for enthusiastic parents, relatives or friends, to come on board with the club and volunteer their services. This could be coaching the
teams as they progress from the soccer school into age groups or any other aspect of running a football club.
Junior and Youth Teams
The soccer school sets the children on their way, before they get into friendly competition with the junior leagues and onto competitive action with the youth set up. All of
the following teams play their football in either the East Manchester Junior Football League or the Tameside Football League; both these leagues can be found on the FA
Full Time website. The early years sees the teams play in a friendly league format with no results or tables published to allow the children to develop and enjoy the game
before moving onto their teenage years when results, scorers and league tables are published. This section of the club is where it all began back in 1992; at that time there
were no local clubs with a junior set up and 25 years on and we are still going strong.
1st and Reserve Teams – Huddersfield League
The success of any adult side is having the ability to feed the youth players at 16 years old into this set up. This allows the football journey with The Ds to continue beyond
the youth set up and follows a route from soccer school beginnings. This is something the club is proud of and for the last four seasons this has flourished; discussions
and training sessions are already planned with the current U16’s as we look to continue their journey.
The Reserves are going into 2017 with a cup game and are confident of a good end to the current league campaign with all but one game being played at Home (Firgrove).
Lewis in his first season as coach is starting to enjoy his time as player/manager and is assisting the younger players with their development as well as pushing players up
to the 1st Team. Meanwhile the 1st team are enjoying life at the business end of Division 3 following promotion last season and currently sit 2nd in the league with a game
in hand (top 3 gain Promotion):
Over 35’s
The final piece of the jigsaw sees the 3D Dynamos Vets team keep The Ds football journey going. The boys play every week for fitness, fun and camaraderie. If you are
interested in joining them give Gordon a call for more details.
Whatever your age if you are interested in playing, coaching or volunteering then please contact:
Val Broadbent (Club Secretary) on 01457 870575 or 07917 572117 Or Carl Hirst (Chairman) on 07773 036593 or via twitter @3ddynamosfc
