Message from the Headteacher, Caroline Barlow

Happy New Year and welcome back to a new academic term.

Issue 23

Friday 25 November 2016

Life has picked up where we left off in December with students showing their fantastic

determination to succeed in a wider range of ways. You will see the front page article

showing our rugby 1 st XV team training with top international coaches and underneath this

message the great news that one of our students has received the news of an offer to study

Law at Cambridge. I am sure this will be the first of a few such offers this year. Our students

are rightly aiming to be among the best at what they do and I am so proud to see their

ambitions being achieved.

Our assembly theme this week has been resilience and I have enjoyed talking to students

about the importance of a positive approach and optimistic outlook. There is a reality that

difficult times come to all of us throughout our life. For young people, the ability to accept

that and then be helped to develop ways to overcome difficulties is a vital skill that will

stand them in good stead for life. It isn’t easy to be able to learn and grow from mistakes or

difficulty but it is a characteristic of some of the most successful people.

Success is becoming a common experience at Heathfield Community College. In this edition

you will see students excited by STEM, experiencing university and receiving awards. There

is more to come - as Year 12 and 13 begin their mock exams the journey to academic

success gathers momentum.

When we show resilience, work together, use the support available to us and have the

strength to believe in ourselves, we can achieve the goals that we have set ourselves. We

must encourage our students to set those goals as high as possible; Heathfield students are

more than capable of matching the best regionally, nationally or even globally. It is a delight

to see some of those goals being achieved.

Huge congratulations to Emily Evans for securing an offer to study Law at Cambridge

University.

The offer reflects Emily’s consistent hard work, excellent academic record, as well as her

calm attitude and quick thinking under pressure. We know she will have been impressive at

interview, as she is so enthused by learning and excited by academic challenge. Well done!
