Rochelle Zell creates culture of academic excellence
Rochelle Zell Jewish
High School (RZJHS)
has achieved recognition
as the “Best Jewish High
School in America,” and
for the second straight
year, the sixth Best Private
High School in Illinois.
These rankings recently
were announced by Niche,
the largest website for research
and reporting of
K-12 schools.
Rochelle Zell Jewish
High School earned this
ranking through its high
scores in a variety of areas
including SAT/ACT
scores, student-teacher
ratio, the quality of colleges
students consider
and where students actually
are accepted, as well
as reviews from students
and parents. The source of
this statistical data for this
ranking is the U.S. Department
of Education; the
data is then analyzed by
Niche’s team of data scientists
to create the 2016
rankings. For the full list
Fusion Academy provides safe space for students to flourish
Fusion Academy is a revolutionary
private middle and high
school where positive relationships
unlock academic potential.
We are a nontraditional community
of learning with the smallest
class size possible: one student
and one teacher per classroom.
This allows us to personalize and
customize curriculum for each
student’s unique strengths, interests
and learning style. We are
also able to personalize scheduling;
students may enroll at any
time (even during the summer)
and take classes at a time of day
that works best for them.
Fusion’s supportive staff and
campus environment provide a
safe space for students to flourish
emotionally, socially and
academically. It includes a stateof-the-art
recording studio and
a mixed-media art studio for
students to express their creativity.
Our Homework Café is
where students complete all their
homework before they leave for
the day with help and supervision
from a teacher.
Classes are offered at three
levels: essential, college prep
and honors. From algebra to
yoga and everything in between,
Fusion has a wide variety of
classes to choose from. Students
can enroll full-time, take classes
for credit or utilize tutoring services.
In addition to academics,
Fusion partners with outside
therapeutic professionals to support
students’ emotional health
and help foster a balanced life.
While it’s impossible to put
students into categories, we generally
serve students with the
following backgrounds: ADHD,
accelerated/gifted learners, dyslexia,
mild learning differences,
social challenges, school anxiety
or students with challenging
schedules. Students who attend
Fusion have one thing in common:
Traditional school isn’t
working.
Fusion has 39 campuses
across the country in California,
Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey,
New York, Texas, Virginia,
and Washington, D.C. To find
for Fusion and what it’s done for
my son. He suffers from anxiety
and some learning differences…
[The staff has] done an amazing
job of getting to know him and
teaching him in a way that engages
him. The entire staff welcomes
him and he finally feels
like he fits in. He loves the one
on one with the teachers and is
able to learn at his pace. Fusion
has saved his life and brought
East Lake Academy develops self-confident leaders
East Lake Academy is
a welcoming community,
filled with the joy of our
students, the enthusiasm
of our faculty, and the
confidence of our parents.
As an independent, Roman
Catholic School, East
Lake has the full support
and encouragement of the
Archdiocese of Chicago
and is accredited by AdvancED.
Founded in 2001, East
Lake Academy is dedicated
to providing students
with an environment to
fully develop self-confident
leaders who are academically
prepared and
know their faith.
At the heart of East Lake
is the mission to form students
through a commitment
to four pillars: academics,
faith, character,
and apostolic service to
others.
• Academics — We are
proud of our long tradition
of academic excellence
in pre-Kindergarten
through 8th grade.
Our accomplished
teachers cultivate a joy
and love of learning,
in engaging and challenging
ways. Students
have consistently scored
above the 90th percentile
on the national Stanford
Achievement Test
for the past eight years.
Founded in 2001, East Lake
Academy is dedicated to providing
students with an environment to
fully develop self-confident leaders
who are academically prepared
and know their faith.
Students are encouraged
to think critically and
creatively.
• Faith — Students are
taught the Catholic faith
both as an academic
subject and as a guide
for life. Key to Christian
living is the awareness
of Christ’s unconditional
love for each person
and His commission to
make this love known to
all people.
• Character - Every aspect
of school life is an
opportunity to develop
character. Character is
developed through respect
for others, punctuality,
fulfillment of
assignments, teamwork,
and helpfulness.
• Service — We define
ourselves by what we
give to others. Apostolic
formation at East Lake
is adapted to the student’s
age and embraces
a range of projects for
individual and group
outreach and service,
both in the local community
and beyond.
East Lake offers before
school care, after school
care, morning and afternoon
La Lumiere students grow into
best versions of themselves
Get ready to thrive
Why La Lumiere? Because
we believe that education
involves the formation
of the entire person.
And there are no shortcuts
in an enterprise of this importance.
How do we go
about it? Inefficiently. We
get to know each and every
one of our 228 students.
We meet them where they
are. And then we carefully
stretch them out of
their comfort zones while
maintaining an intentional,
supportive environment.
In doing so, we empower
them to thrive — here on
our wooded campus in La
Porte, Ind., an hour southeast
of Chicago; and in the
colleges and careers they
pursue.
We get to know each and every
This is our “why.” Come
the tone set by the student
Midwestern Heart. Global Mind.
body itself.
Investing precious resources
To understand the soul
of a school, look at the dynamic
between faculty and
learners. At La Lumiere,
we’re proud to have one
teacher for every seven
students and we believe
that our average class size
of 11 is a distinguishing
strength. But these statistics
don’t convey what
matters even more—the
dedication and round-theclock
availability of the
women and men who have
devoted their careers and,
in fact, their lives to the
education of our students.
Fostering comprehensive
growth
What does a win look
like for us? Graduating
seniors who are well on
their way to growing into
the best versions of themselves,
comfortable in
their own skins yet hungry
for the next challenge. Students
they’re at the helm of their
Lake Forest Academy speaker series will
promote moral courage
Lake Forest Academy’s
Bird Colloquium will use
literature to teach and inspire
through a remarkable
speaker’s series focused
on school-wide development
of moral courage.
Following the introduction
of Language, Culture
and Identity, a new senior
English course implemented
this fall, English Department
Chair Dr. Patrick
Finnessy announced a new
18-month collquia that
will impact and engage
students in all four grade
levels across the English
curriculum at LFA. The
series begins in February
2017.
“The purpose of this series
is to emphasize that
the writing, speaking, and
the ‘doing’ of courage is
a process—first, developing
the skill (writing,
speaking, creating) and
then enacting one’s ideas
(courage) for a specific
audience and purpose,”
Dr. Finnessy said, “We
will begin this spring with
artists and speakers who
will emphasize writing as
a process—it takes courage
to write.Then, we will
focus on using writing as
an act of moral courage—
taking a stand through the
written word. From there,
our intent is to work on
public speaking skills—
also demanding courage—
and use voice to ask our
questions out loud.”
New York City-based
award-winning writer and
performer Caroline Rothstein
will work with LFA
freshmen on Feb. 24,; she
will return next year to do
a follow-up collaboration
with the same students.
Rothstein has performed
spoken word poetry and
facilitated workshops at
colleges, schools, and international
performance
venues for more than a
decade. Her work has appeared
in Cosmopolitan,
BuzzFeed, Narratively,
The Huffington Post, and
Williams Magazine.
LFA seniors will have
the opportunity in March
to work with Josh Karp,
a Northwestern alumnus
who now teaches journalism
at his alma mater. The
author of A Futile and Stupid
Gesture: How Doug
Kenney and National
on campus on April 11,
speaking to the sophomore
English classes, as well as
at a community gathering.
Come May, Irshad Manji,
Director of University
of Southern California’s
Moral Courage Project,
will speak to juniors. Dr.
Finnessy notes, “Professor
Manji and her team at
USC define moral courage
as doing the right thing
in the face of your fears.
It’s a leadership practice
that applies not just to
students, but also to educators,
entrepreneurs, and
executives.” Manjii wrote
The Trouble with Islam
Today (which became the
PBS film, “Faith Without
Fear”) and Allah, Liberty
& Love, and has appeared
on CNN, MSNBC, and
PBS. She returns to LFA in
fall 2017 and spring 2018.
LFA’s ethos—Midwestern
Heart, Global Mind;
and the four pillars of its
mission—character, scholarship,
citizenship, and
responsibility—align with
this endeavor.
Lake Forest Country Day School to host open houses
Lake Forest Country Day
School will host an open house 9
a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, and Monday,
March 12. An open house
offers the opportunity for families
to tour the campus, speak
with teachers and students, observe
classes in session, and
meet families from the LFCDS
community.
LFCDS delivers a diverse
and rich educational experience
grounded in academics,
arts and athletics to 2-year-old
through eighth-grade students.
The LFCDS experience ensures
that talented teachers inspire and
challenge individual students at
the top of their abilities, according
to their needs.
At LFCDS, students from
more than 30 communities thrive
in a state-of-the-art, hands-on
learning environment that encourages
self-expression and
confidence through inspired
teaching, academic rigor, individualized
attention, and responsible
citizenship.
“Two important beliefs are at
the heart of our teaching philosophy,”
Head of School Bob Whelan
said. “Social and emotional
development is inextricably
linked with academic achievement,
and experiential learning
creates a foundation for deeper
understanding.
“Teaching and learning are not
by rote here. The classrooms,
technology offerings, laboratories,
art spaces and playing fields
all serve as vital staging grounds
for a rich program, designed to
prepare LFCDS graduates to
be compassionate, independent
thinkers with a strong sense of
personal integrity and intellectual
curiosity.”
In October, the school opened
its state-of-the-art, 2,800-squarefoot
Innovation Center, where
students combine technology
and art, imagination and ingenuity
to create nearly anything they
can dream.
While the essence of the space
is child-driven, the concept was
born from a fundamental tenant
long held at LFCDS: Industries
change, but a student will always
need to be able to communicate
an idea in a meaningful yet novel
and creative way. The LFCDS
Innovation Center is divided into
three connected creative spaces:
the Think Tank, The Innovation
Lab and the Robotics Lab. In
addition, there is a separate tool
room nearby.
In addition each fall, LFCDS
hosts a special speaker series
that attracts best-selling authors
and nationally renowned child
development experts. The school
believes the social emotional
growth and well-being of each
child is essential to successful
learning both immediately and
in future endeavors. The special
speaker series assists our community
in gaining access to some
of the world’s most sought-after
child development lecturers
These events are free and open
to the public.
Highlighted by a 7:1
student:faculty ratio, an LFCDS
education sets the stage for a
bright future in secondary school
and beyond, with 20 percent of
LFCDS graduates attending colleges
and universities ranked in
the top 20 by U.S. News and
World Report. To register for an
Montessori of Lake Forest offers well-rounded learning programs
According to current brain
research, brain development in
early childhood sets the stage
for a child’s educational success.
The first three years of life
builds the foundation for all development
that follows, and the
first six years are thought to be
the most critical in overall development.
This concept is not
new to Montessori education. In
fact, it is at the very core of how
the Montessori child learns and
grows, and has been for over 100
years. The Montessori School of
Lake Forest has been fostering
the love of learning for children
for 50 years, building strong
foundations for children from
birth through age 15.
The Montessori School of
Lake Forest (MSLF) is currently
enrolling, with immediate openings
for children ages 3 to 6 in
our Primary program. We are
also enrolling in all programs for
the 2017-2018 school year, including
space in our new Toddler
classroom, for children ages 15
months to 3 years. Please come
visit our school to learn more.
We invite you to attend our Admission
Open House from 10
a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 28, at
our Laurel Drive Campus, 13700
West Laurel Drive, Lake Forest.
Please call us at (847) 918-
or to arrange a visit.
As one of the premier Montessori
Schools in the nation
and with a long-standing history
of 50 years in the Lake Forest
community, MSLF offers wellrounded
learning programs for
children ages birth to 15 years.
Program options range from
half-day to full-day and yearround
academic offerings. The
student body is very diverse with
students coming from at least
eight different countries and
over 30 communities in the Chicago
area.
Why MSLF?
MSLF’s approach emphasizes
the development of the whole
child and encourages academic
and character development
equally. Curricula at each developmental
level are broad and
deep. Our standards exceed the
Illinois State Board of Education’s
requirements, and students
thrive at every level. MSLF
alumni go on to succeed at renowned
high schools, universities,
post-graduate institutions
and workplaces.
At MSLF, children feel connected
to a caring community in
which their individual developmental
needs are satisfied. Here,
children learn at their own pace,
free from the time pressures of
our fast-paced society. Presented
with opportunities to fulfill their
greatest potential in our thoughtfully
prepared, hands-on learning
environments, our students
gain independence, self-esteem,
and respect for others.
of change.
Forest Bluff School fosters independence through self-directed learning
Walk into a Forest Bluff
School classroom on any
given day, and you will see
students deeply engaged in
a wide array of meaningful
work of their choosing,
perhaps identifying
the parts of speech in a
favorite poem, researching
the burial customs of
ancient Egypt or collaborating
with classmates on
an original play about the
structure of a leaf. At Forest
Bluff School, an internationally
renowned,
AMI-accredited Montessori
school in Lake Bluff,
students between the ages
of 18 months and 14 years
experience the joy and satisfaction
of a self-directed
learning approach that respects
their innate curiosity,
encourages independence,
and embraces the
individuality of each child.
Since its founding 35
years ago, Forest Bluff
School has adhered faithfully
to the educational
philosophy developed by
Dr. Maria Montessori. We
believe that the search for
understanding, as opposed
to the memorization of information,
is the essence
of a meaningful education.
A Forest Bluff School
education focuses on the
child’s skills for discovery
and exploration through
hands-on learning opportunities
at every age. The
child-centered instructional
methods allow students
to take ownership of their
learning and provide students
with the skills and
confidence to challenge
themselves on many levels.
Many of the learning
experiences that students
most enjoy at Forest Bluff
School are those that take
place off campus. Schoolwide
theatrical productions,
Secondary Level
(ages 12-14) work trips,
small group outings to
supplement classroom research,
and regular visits
to local parks and the public
library are just some
of the ways in which our
students are given frequent
opportunities to apply their
learning outside of the
classroom.
As a true Montessori
school, we support the
development of the whole
child. Students at Forest
Bluff School not only exhibit
academic excellence,
but also the many qualities
that constitute positive
character development:
empathy, integrity, grit,
resilience, responsibility,
initiative, self-discipline,
self-reflection, and respect
for themselves, others, and
the environment.
Graduates of Forest
Bluff School achieve excellent
records at public
and private high schools,
large and small, local and
national. Recent graduates
have gone on to attend
Lake Forest High School,
Lake Forest Academy,
Woodlands Academy, St.
Paul’s School, and Phillips
Exeter Academy, among
others.
Every member of the
Forest Bluff School faculty
holds a master’s degree
in education and is AMI
Montessori certified. Our
experienced and dedicated
teachers work closely with
one another, sharing their
wisdom and best practices
for supporting all students
in their quest for knowledge,
understanding, and
genuine human connections.
Forest Bluff School recognizes
the importance of
building strong relationships
with the families it
serves. As such, we maintain
close communications
with parents on an ongoing
basis through our Parent
Education programs that
include book discussions,
lectures, parent and child
classes (for children under
18 months), and more.
Adults and children alike
benefit from the intimate,
supportive, and welcoming
parent community at
Woodlands Academy prepares women to lead in STEM
Young women are losing
ground in the STEM fields —
science, technology, engineering
and math. At the bachelor’s degree
level, between 2004-2014,
the share of STEM-related bachelor’s
degrees earned by women
decreased in all seven discipline
areas: engineering; computer
science; earth, atmospheric and
ocean sciences; physical sciences;
mathematics; biological and
agricultural sciences, and social
sciences and psychology.
Graduates of girls’ schools,
however, are faring much better
than their peers from coeducational
institutions. Girls’ school
graduates are three times more
likely to consider majoring in
engineering and six times more
likely to consider majoring in
math, science and technology.
“Not only do our graduates
go on to pursue degrees in the
STEM fields,” Head of School
Meg Steele said, “but they go on
to become leaders. We are immensely
proud that our graduates
are blazing trails in traditionally
male-dominated fields.”
Woodlands Academy of the
Sacred Heart is Lake County’s
only single-gender school. Located
in Lake Forest, the 159
year-old school is an independent,
Catholic day and boarding,
college-preparatory school
for young women of all faiths
grades nine through 12. Its challenging
academic program and
extracurricular offerings prepare
students to pursue degrees in
STEM fields. For example, the
Woodlands Academy Robotics
team will be advancing to the
FTC Illinois State Championship
in February after making
an impressive showing at the regional
competition in December.
Additionally, Woodlands Academy
students earned an average
score of 4.5 on the A.P. Calculus
exam compared to a 2.9 national
average in 2016.
Also, Woodlands Academy
students show academic strength
across multiple disciplines evidenced
by the fact that nearly one
in three Woodlands Academy of
the Sacred Heart seniors are being
honored by the Illinois Student
Assistance Commission as 2017-
18 State Scholars. Honorees were
chosen based on a combination of
exemplary ACT or SAT test scores
and sixth-semester class rank.
They typically rank in or near the
top 10 percent of seniors from 765
high schools in the state.
Founded in 1858, Woodlands
Academy is an independent
Catholic college preparatory
day and boarding high school
for young women. It’s part of a
worldwide network of Sacred
Heart Schools that spans the
United States and 40 other countries.
A nonprofit, Woodlands
Academy’s identity is rooted in
Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat’s
desire to inspire young hearts
and minds to excel, to lead lives
of integrity and to serve.
