Captain Tamim aims to
finish the tour well
• Tribune Report
Bangladesh’s stand-in Test captain
Tamim Iqbal expects to end
the tour of New Zealand on a high
note despite having the injury
struck dressing-room and the fact
that the Tigers have been winless
so far in the tour. Tamim, who has
been playing as Bangladesh Test
vice-captain, emerged the ninth
Bangladesh Test captain after
injury ruled out wicket-keeper
batsman Mushfiqur Rahim from
the second and the final Test
against hosts Kiwis which began
at Christchurch today.
Tamim, who had his Test debut
in New Zealand in 2008, is not
worried of the captaincy job rather
than the left handed batsman is
taking it as a learning scope in his
vast international career.
“Honestly I am not taking it as
any pressure. All the team has a
vice-captain in order to take the
responsibility of the team in absence
of their captain. The team
will be benefited if I will be successful
in doing my job. It will
be good for me too. I have some
plans in mind and know that it
will not click all the time. I will be
a happy man if I can stick to my
plan and act accordingly,” said
Tamim to the media at Hagley
Oval, Christchurch yesterday.
‘Yes we will be
missing Mushfiq,
Imrul and Mominul
but I am hopeful
that those who
are getting the
opportunity will use
it well and do the
needed for the team’
Bangladesh will be missing its
three prominent longer-version
batsmen – Mushfiqur, opener Imrul
Kayes and top-order batsman
Mominul Haque – in the game
today. Wicket-keeper batsman
Nurul Hasan is set to make debut
in the format as he replaces
Mushfiqur while Soumya Sarkar
will open for Bangladesh in Test
for the first time replacing Imrul
Kayes. Nazmul Hossain Shanto
will make his maiden international
appearance for Bangladesh
replacing Mominul Haque in the
Test.
“Yes we will be missing Mushfiq,
Imrul and Mominul but I am
hopeful that those who are getting
the opportunity will use it
well and do the needed for the
team. We came here (in New Zealand)
to play good cricket and I
think our effort was seen by those
who came to witness us play in
the field. We had created chances
and at times it looked as if we will
be winning a game but some mistakes
denied us from the winning
moments. I think we have worked
well on rectifying those mistakes
and will be going into the
Christchurch Test with positives
from our recent past,” Tamim said
to the media yesterday. •
Mominul also
ruled out
• Tribune Report
Visiting Bangladesh team faced
another injury blow as top order
batsman Mominul Haque has been
ruled out from the second and final
Test against New Zealand becoming
the third Bangladeshi cricketer
to miss the second Test of the series
due to injury.
The left handed batsman, who
has been suffering from rib injury,
was unable to train due to pain on
Thursday and was declared unfit
for the game. He had scored 64
and 23 in the first Test and missed
a Test since February 2013.
Wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur
Rahaim and opener Imrual
Kayes have already been ruled out
from the second Test due to injury.
Young left-handed batsman
Nazmul Hossian Shanto has been
included to the squad and will replace
injured Mominul while wicket-keeper
batsman Nurul Hasan
Sohan will also make his Test debut
after Mushfiq’s thumb injury which
ruled him out for three weeks.
Soumya Sarkar will open the innings
for the first time in five day
cricket. He will replace another injured
opener Imrul Kayes. •
