U.S. From May through October,
According to research from Mote Marine Laboratory,
Sarasota Bay is the year-round home to more than
140 identifiable Bottlenose Dolphins.
An adult West Indian manatee can consume over
Beach, you have a good chance of finding
sharks’ teeth washed up on the sand.
Amenities include a boardwalk,
concessions, picnic area, lifeguards,
restrooms, sand volleyball courts, and
beach wheelchairs. Parking is free but
limited, so plan to arrive early in the day.
Sarasota County has 35 miles of beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. Challenge
your kids to find starfish, egg casings, sea glass, sand dollars, coral, and more
while exploring the white sandy beaches. They will enjoy exploring the coastal
environment and delight in having found a natural treasure to take home. And,
who doesn’t love beach combing? One important caution: Make sure the shells
your kids collect are not live (inhabited). Aside from the surprise you’ll get back
home, it’s illegal to remove living shells from the beaches. This includes sand
dollars, starfish, and sea urchins.
Scavenger Hunt List Suggestions:
Three different kinds of shells.
A feather.
A unique piece of driftwood.
A creature’s home
(crab holes are a good one).
Something swimming
in the water. What is it?
A whole sand dollar.
A starfish.
A piece of seaweed.
A piece of coral.
Three pieces of trash.
A piece of sea glass.
An egg casing.
An animal track in the sand.
What type of animal made
the track?
Count how many waves crash
into shore in one minute.
How many paces wide
is the beach?
Wade into the water. Time
how long it takes for your
feet to dry.
Sunshine Survival Tips
There’s a reason why Florida is known as the “Sunshine State”. This
subtropical state has year-round sunshine making it gorgeous for a
vacation, but it can catch visitors unawares if they are not taking some
precautions. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunburn, and sunstroke
can spoil your vacation, yet they are very easy to avoid by following our
Florida Sunshine Survival Tips.
Wear Cool Loose Clothing The best way to stay
cool is by wearing clothing that is loose fitting and preferably made of
cotton or natural fabrics. Loose dresses, shirts, tops, and shorts are
preferable to jeans and tight-fitting clothing if you are to stay looking
and feeling cool and comfortable. Swap shoes and sneakers for open
sandals. If you still feel hot and sweaty, use a handheld fan. When the
body sweats it loses fluid, salt, and minerals. Water depletion can cause
a dry mouth, headaches, and fainting while symptoms of salt depletion
include muscle spasms, cramps, and vomiting.
Don’t Overdo the Sunshine Heat stroke technically occurs when the body’s core temperature
reaches 105°F or above. It can cause nausea, confusion, disorientation, seizures, fainting, cramps, and shallow breathing as
the body struggles to cool itself. Anyone showing these symptoms should be treated as a medical emergency. Remove any
unnecessary clothing, cool the body by bathing with a cool wash cloth or put them in a cool air-conditioned room and seek
medical advice. Give the sufferer plenty of cool drinks of water and monitor their symptoms carefully.
Tips for
Finding Beautiful Shells
The Suncoast is home to miles of sugar sand
beaches and soothing emerald green waters.
Shelling can be a rewarding way to explore
the area. Check out these easy tips to
make sure your shell hunting experience is
enjoyable and successful:
Low tide is the best time
to wade out and search for new shells, or
search the tideline after stormy weather.
Check tide charts and moon phases to see
when low tide will be. Full or new moons will
bring the most extreme tides which mean
even better shelling.
Less is more – there are thousands
of others who will come to these beaches in
search of shells. Grab a few that really catch
your eye and leave the rest to someone else
or Mother Nature. She’ll thank you later.
In addition, shells can play a large part in
the local ecosystem. Going too crazy could
disturb that natural cycle.
Lather up with SPF Sunscreen Frequently Most Florida visitors diligently apply
sunscreen first thing in the morning when they hit the beach. However, sunscreen does not last all day. The Sun Protection
Factor (SPF) indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun so SPF 15 means that a person who burns in 5 minutes is
theoretically protected for 75 minutes. However, it is recommended that you reapply sun lotion every two hours and after
you have been in the pool or sea. Sunscreen does not just prevent your skin from burning; it also screens out harmful ultra
violet rays that can cause skin cancer. UVA rays cause wrinkles and premature aging, while UVB rays burn the skin, so choose
a good quality sunscreen that keeps them both at bay.
Drink Plenty of Water Keeping your fluid intake high to counter the heat is important, however,
drinking beer or alcoholic drinks can actually leave you more dehydrated than ever. If you drink a glass of beer your body
will actually expel three times that amount leaving you dangerously dehydrated. The more alcohol you drink, the more
dehydrated you will become as alcohol affects the body’s fluid levels. Eating salty snacks is another way to cause the body
to lose fluid from its cells, and sugar-high sodas and sports drinks create a similar problem. You need to drink pure water
throughout the day to counter dehydration, and avoid sweet or alcoholic drinks until the cooler evening. A tip for measuring
whether you are drinking enough is to check you are visiting the bathroom as frequently as usual.
We want you to enjoy every minute of your vacation in southwest Florida, so make sure you pay attention to these sunshine
survival tips and stay cool and healthy!
Practice smart shelling It’s
a good idea to wear sandals to avoid treading on
sharp shells or stingrays buried in the sand. Take
a bucket or bag to collect your finds and check
each shell is empty before adding it to your
collection. Taking shells with live inhabitants is
prohibited, so be sure “it’s creature free or leave
it be”. Remember – a shell is a hard protective
exterior for sea animals. Be respectful of these
homes and look for something that’s already
vacant.
Seashells can smell if not properly cleaned. Soak
all your shells in a bucket of 50-50 bleach and
water. Once the flaky covering (periostracum)
has gone, remove the shells, rinse, and let them
dry. File any rough edges if you wish and give
the shells a shine by wiping them with baby oil.
Don’t Swim Against
a Rip Current
If a rip current is pulling you out to sea, swimming against it will only make you tired.
Instead, swim out of the current parallel to shore. Once out, swim back to shore.
Know The Signs of Drowning
Drowning can be a quiet process. No breathing means no calling for help.
Because humans instinctively push their arms into the water, a drowning victim
may not be able to wave for help. So, whether someone is flailing frantically
for help or quietly bobbing at
the surface with their mouth
submerged and arms extended
horizontally, ask them if they’re
alright, if they cannot answer, help
Hunting for Sharks’ Teeth
on Venice’s Beaches
By: Gillian Birch
A strange natural phenomenon has led to Venice becoming known as “The Shark’s
Tooth Capital of the World.” These smooth T-shaped prehistoric teeth are usually
dark grey in color and may be anything from one inch to five inches in length. They
are so numerous in this area you can cheat and buy them at local souvenir stores for
a couple of dollars, but it’s much more rewarding to have the thrill of finding your
very own shark’s tooth.
Why is Venice so Special for Finding
Sha rks’ Teeth? These warm Gulf waters were once filled with
numerous giant sharks such as the extinct Carcharodon Megalodons. Area waters
are still home to a few species of smaller sharks, but it’s very unlikely to see one
within sight of land.
Millions of years ago, the sharks lived, bred, and then died in these exceptionally calm waters and their carcasses lay on the
seabed. Although most of the shark’s remains would rot, disintegrate, or become fish food, the hardened T-shaped teeth
became fossilized over time.
The tides carry, bury, and later uncover these hard objects, especially during winter storms. Eventually the teeth are thrown
up on the beach around Venice, due to the converging currents that deposit sediment along the shallow drop-offs along
the coastline.
Best Beaches in Venice for Finding Sharks’ Teeth
With 14 miles of sandy beaches
in Venice, there are a lot of opportunities for finding sharks’ teeth washed up along the edge of the water. Here’s a rundown
to some of the best beaches in Venice where you stand a good chance of going home with your own prehistoric collection
of sharks’ teeth – if you know how and where to search for them.
Venice Beach is one of the busiest beaches in the area and for that reason is possibly not the best beach for competing with
other sharks’ teeth fossil hunters. However, after a storm you may be lucky and find a tooth thrown up from the depths after
15 million years or so.
Never Turn Your Back
to the Waves
Don’t let a carefree attitude get you swept up by a sneaky
wave. Even on a calm day, always keep an eye on the surf
to avoid injuries.
The quieter Service Club Park Beach further south may be a better place to start your search. It is located behind the
municipal airport and has free parking, restrooms, showers, and a boardwalk to the beach.
The best beach for finding sharks’ teeth is Caspersen Beach, at the extreme south end of Venice’s beaches. This beach is
also good for scuba diving, which greatly enhances your chances of finding a larger Megladon tooth which can be more rare
and valuable. When the surf is calm proficient swimmers can snorkel out from the beach, and dive down to scour the sandy
bottom by hand-fanning the sand or look in crevices in the rocks or pockets of sand deposited there.
How to Search for Sharks’ Teeth You will always find ardent searchers sifting the water on Caspersen
Beach with their sand scoops and nets, looking for the next treasure. You may want to use a sand sieve to sift through the tiny
broken seashells that hide those elusive sharks’ teeth.
Use a small spade to shovel sand into your net or sieve. Let the water rinse away all but the larger particles, then examine
them for dark tooth-shaped forms. Sooner or later you will be rewarded with your very own prehistoric shark’s tooth to take
home and show off to family and friends.

Florida is a
Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Jennifer Brinkman
By: Gillian Birch
Whether you enjoy birdwatching to spot new species, or to
capture them on photographs, Florida has plenty of great
spots for finding flocks of birds. Many bird species spend
the winter in Florida. Others stop to rest on Florida’s lakes
and marshes en route to warmer destinations along the Gulf
migration flyway. Southwest Florida has some of America’s
top refuges for spotting rare and unusual birds, from
waders and ducks to impressive birds of prey.
The best time to spot perching birds in their natural
habitat is during the early hours after sunrise or just
before sunset. If you want to get up close, wear light colored
clothing that blends in with nature and does not rustle
as you walk. Move slowly and stay quiet to get the best
results, whether you are hiding or watching from a natural
lookout point.
Stay away from nests, especially if they contain eggs or
young birds. Never touch a nest or remove an egg as
the parent may desert the nest, leaving the young birds
to starve.
Top Birdwatching Locations
Near Sarasota and Venice
The Sarasota Audubon Society
manages a 300-acre wetlands site at
the Celery Fields. It organizes several
trips and activities for birdwatchers
every month, so checkout their website
– sarasotaaudubon.org. This natural
area is the main stormwater collection
zone but also serves as a natural
recreation area. The ponds, marshes,
and canals are lined with willow, pines,
and reeds making it perfect for birds.
This area is ideal for birdwatching from
the boardwalks, gazebo, and hiking
trails and is easily accessed from the
I-75 exit 210. Unusual birds to look
out for are sandhill cranes, limpkins,
bobolinks, bald eagles, and harriers.
Jennifer Brinkman
Jennifer Brinkman Jennifer Brinkman
Further south, the Venice Audubon
Society manages the Rookery, open
daily from dawn to dusk and it is always
popular with bird photographers.
Shady pavilions overlook the small
lake or walk around to spot egrets,
blue herons, glossy ibis, green herons,
anhingas, and many other species
feeding and building their nests.
Volunteer staff are on hand to help
identify species or lend a pair of
binoculars. This prime birding site is
just off the US-41 in Venice on Annex
Road. Look out for purple gallinules,
common yellowthroats, black bellied
whistling ducks, skimmers, and
Florida burrowing owls.
As you can see, there are so many
great birdwatching locations in southwest
Florida. I hope you get to enjoy
Catching Gamefish
in Southwest Florida
The big attraction for fishing enthusiasts is the diversity of gamefish
that call these warm Gulf waters home. Some of the most sought-after
gamefish are tarpon, spotted sea trout, snook, and redfish. Such is
the profusion of certain species, the waters around Boca Grande have
earned it the nickname “Tarpon Capital of the World”. Many avid
resident anglers and visitors aim for the “Grand Slam” -- hooking one
of each of the “Big Four” game fish listed above in the same day.
Southwest Florida is a
True Fisherman’s Paradise
Florida is a hotspot for fishing, and no wonder! Along with saltwater fishing in the warm Gulf waters, it also offers canals,
rivers, lakes, and excellent backwater fishing. For the uninitiated, backwater fishing refers to fishing in the network of tidal
creeks, bays and mangroves that this coast is riddled with.
West Coast fishing calls for smaller, lighter rods
than other areas of Florida. Experts recommend
a rod length of 6.5 to 7.5 feet and lures from
1/8 to 1/2 an ounce for successful fishing in the
area. Fish tend to hang out wherever there are
structures, rocks, and oyster bars. The area
has many such places along with artificial reefs
guaranteeing some nice catches.
Southwest Florida’s coastline has hundreds of
islands and thousands of miles of shoreline
providing rich seagrass beds that attract all
manner of saltwater fish. Thousands of acres of
wetlands are under the protection of state or
federal law, particularly around Charlotte Harbor,
which is one of Florida’s largest estuaries. Clean
Southwest Florida is a
True Fisherman’s Paradise (continued)
Fishing in the Sarasota Area
Although most people come to Sarasota for the beautiful beaches,
the excellent fishing is a bonus for keen anglers and sportsmen. The
Sarasota Bay watershed along with freshwater rivers including the
Peace and Myakka Rivers, streams and tributaries make up some of
Florida’s most productive estuaries. These waters are prime breeding
grounds for bait fish and provide easy access for seasonal fish to find
their way in. As the minnows move in, they draw larger fish behind,
making it a prime place for catching pompano, large trout, and ladyfish.
Popular fishing spots include the waters on either side of the swing
bridge leading to Casey Key at Osprey or heading along the Intracoastal
Waterway near Albee Road Bridge. Turtle Beach on Siesta Key and
South Lido Beach Park are good areas for fishing all year round. In the
warmer months the Intracoastal Waterway in front of Spanish Point
near Siesta Key is perfect for first-time and experienced anglers. While
you’re waiting for a bite, you can drink in the beautiful scenery and wallow in golden sunshine at almost any time of year.
An IslA nd of
Adventure Awaits
For shore fishing, it’s hard to beat the 15-acre pet-friendly Blackburn Point Park located on the left just before, and the right
just after the swing bridge leading to Casey Key off Blackburn Point Road in Osprey. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., you’ll
find fellow fishermen and friendly boaters sharing this unspoiled natural location. It has several well-constructed fishing
piers, boat ramps, restrooms, shelters, and everything you need for a great day’s fishing on terra firma.
There are a number of local licensed captains running
excellent fishing charters. Trips may last from four to 12
hours with superb deep sea fishing for tarpon and other
gamefish in the stunning blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Adventure Away invites you to escape and take
in all the island adventures that await on Anna Maria
Island and its surrounding coastal water ways.
All types of grouper and big game sport fish are hauled
aboard on a daily basis by anglers eager to test their mental
and physical strength against these wily catches.
Choose Your Adventure
The area offers a wide variety of charter options including
drift fishing. The Gulf of Mexico is home to prize catches
of tarpon, mahi mahi, cobia, bonito, kingfish, jack crevalle,
snapper, Spanish mackerel, and even the occasional sailfish.
If you prefer backwater fishing, there are many experienced
local companies offering charter fishing trips in search of
Florida’s
Unique Wildlife
Many endangered and protected animal species reside in Southwest
Florida’s unique landscape including the American alligator, Florida
panther, black bear, West Indian manatee, bottlenose dolphin, burrowing
owl, gopher tortoise, and countless more rare birds. Some of the best
places to see these creatures in their native habitats are right here in
Sarasota County and the Everglades.
Everglades National Park
With over 2,500 square miles of swamp and sawgrass marsh, Everglades
National Park’s unique ecosystem provides a one-of-a-kind habitat for
snakes, alligator, crocodile, wading birds, and more. An airboat tour
through this magnificent area to view it’s abundant wildlife is not to
be missed.
Florida’s state animal is the Florida panther, a subspecies of cougar. This large, long-tailed, pale brown cat grows to six feet
or more and with less than 100-180 remaining in Florida; it is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. Its habitat
is usually the same as the mainstay of its diet, the white-tailed deer and wild boar. When deer and hog are not available,
panthers will eat other small animals such as raccoons or armadillos. Many of Florida’s remaining panthers live in or near
Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve. No need to be nervous about encountering these elusive cats,
the closest you’re most likely to get during your visit is spotting a panther crossing sign – and if you do, slow down and keep
a watchful eye. Since 2014, Florida has had a record number of Florida panther deaths, the majority due to road collisions.
Southwest Florida Marine Life
The Gulf waters around Southwest Florida are teaming with amazing marine life.
Two of the most popular residents are bottlenose dolphins and the West Indian
manatee. A cruise or kayak trip is a great way to view dolphins or manatees.
Dolphins love to leap and play in the bow waves or chase the wake of boats. You
can often see manatees grazing on sea grasses in shallow waters of the areas
mangrove-laden estuaries. Sometimes when manatees see kayaks on the surface,
they will come in close to get a good look. Local guides will give you the best
chance of catching a glimpse of a manatee in the wild.
SHUTTERSTOCK
During the summer months, mother
sea turtles emerge from the Gulf of
Mexico during the late night hours.
They slowly plow their way through
the sand, hollow out a nest and lay
around 100 ping-pong ball sized eggs.
She will cover the eggs to protect and
hide them from harm, and then crawl
back out to sea. Each turtle nest will
remain quiet for about two months
as the baby turtles grow and mature.
Instinct drives baby turtles to dig out
of the sand that has been protecting
them and follow the moonlight
reflected on the water that will lead
them to the sea. This event will happen
over and over into October until all of
the viable eggs have hatched. Visitors
staying in properties on the beach
front should turn outside lights off
at night as the light confuses baby
turtles. When your day at the beach is
over remember to fill in any holes dug
on the beach before you leave, this
will ensure that the hatchlings have
a clear path through the sand and
help them make it safely to the Gulf
waters. Watching sea turtles can be an
incredible experience for the whole
family. Following the guidelines above
will ensure that many families will
enjoy the experience for years to come.
Take advantage of the many
knowledgeable guides and eco-tour
options the area has to offer to
experience Florida’s wild side.
SHUTTERSTOCK
Stingrays frequently can be found in the warm shallow waters of the Gulf of
Mexico during the months of May through October. They come close to shore
in search of food and bury themselves in the sand. You don’t want to step on
a stingray – the result could be a painful sting. In order to prevent this, it is
important to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering the water of Southwest
Florida’s beaches. By shuffling your feet across the sandy bottom you can alert
the stingray of your presence, they will uncover themselves and swim away. Stingrays don’t want to be stepped on anymore
than you want to be stung! What should you do if you happen to step on a stingray and get stung? Head to the lifeguard
stand when possible. If there isn’t one available try a nearby home, hotel, or restaurant. First aid for stingray stings involves
flushing the wound with fresh water if possible, and soaking the affected area in hot water (as hot as can be tolerated without
causing burns). Most lifeguard stands have buckets and hot water on hand for stingray accidents. If the victim shows any
signs of an allergic reaction – DIAL 911.
Sarasota’s Food Scene
is a Standout
By: Larry Hoffman
Sarasota is on lots of lists. And, I mean lots. Best
beach in the U.S., best places to retire, best
places to live in the U.S… I could go on for a
while, but, I won’t.
In Sarasota’s vibrant dining community, one
of the most talked about “best of” lists is the
Conde Nast Traveler, “Best Food Cities in the
U.S.”. I’m sure you can guess, Sarasota Florida
made that list! This is a list of the top fifteen
food destinations in this country. And, we’re in
there. This isn’t some lightly regarded thing mind
you. All the culinary heavy hitters show up on it.
Chicago, New York, NOLA, San Fran, Boston,
and SARASOTA!
For those of us who write about, observe and dine
out in this city, it’s not a surprise to be included.
OK, well, maybe it’s a wee bit surprising. But,
anyone who has been around here long enough
knows, we’ve got some fantastic places to dine.
Culinary Conscience
Obviously, seafood is big here. I shouldn’t have to tell you
that. Anything from a plate of peel and eat shrimp, to gulf
coast oysters, to our delicious (when in season) stone crabs.
But, Sarasota’s seafood scene goes way deeper than that.
Larry Hoffman
Peruvian, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese,
Laotian, Greek, Mexican, Baja, BBQ,
French, Irish, Italian, Cuban, and
vegetarian, Oh, did I miss any? Yeah,
I did. We even have an Ethiopian
restaurant. Stir in more sushi bars than
you can count on two hands and a
ceviche bar (or two) and you’ve got
a dining scene that can satisfy the
craving of any moment.
Explore Downtown
Sarasota
Sarasota’s Gulf Gate neighborhood
is a major foodie find. It’s not on the
radar of visitors to our area (it should
be). But, I guarantee you that every
local has it on their dining map. The
business district is compact to say
the least. Four streets. But, boy do
they pack a lot of dining options into
that small space. There’s twenty plus
restaurants to pick from. But, who’s
counting?
Gulf Gate is a prime example the
culinary diversity we just mentioned.
This dining destination has it all. There
are no blank spaces. These are “mom
“First we eat,
then we do everything else. ”
- M.F.K. Fisher
We’ve had our share of James Beard nominated chefs in
Sarasota. One of those standout chefs, Steve Phelps, is
working hard to make the sustainable seafood movement
part of our dining culture. Through the national culinary
organization, Chef’s Collaborative, Chef Phelps sponsors
It’s one thing to have a Mexican restaurant over here and
maybe an Asian spot over there. And, hey, let’s throw in a
Greek place just for good measure. Our local dining scene
goes way beyond that. I mean WAY beyond. Ready? Here
we go…
and pop” spots. On the whole, they are small, intimate and personal
places to dine. Not a cookie cutter chain in sight! Opa Opa, Tony’s
Chicago Beef, Kiyoshi’s Sushi, and Piccolo’s Italian Market really
capture the essence of the Gulf Gate dining experience.
A Foodies Paradise
Don’t think just because we’ve got some incredible beaches,
shopping, and weather that we’re only about casual food. Sure, you can wear shorts into about 95% of our restaurants
(maybe 99%). But, we’ve got a super vibrant and nationally recognized fine dining scene mixed in among the fish tacos and
grouper sandwiches.
Sarasota’s has small, but, highly recognized “fine dining” community. Finding the more traditional fine dining experience
here is no problem at all. It’s represented by Maison Blanche, Michael’s on East, Pomona, Euphemia Haye, and Beach Bistro.
Larry Hoffman
Looking for something a little more laid back, but, where food and service are still a top priority? We’ve got that covered
too! Boca Kitchen & Market, Veronica Fish & Oyster, The Rosemary, and Lila should be on your to-do list.
Get Out There And EAT!
As you can probably tell, when it comes to food, the Sarasota area has more than a little
something for everyone. It has lots for everyone! Whether it’s a white tablecloth dining
experience or a white sand beach picnic adventure. Casual or fancy. Breakfast, brunch, lunch,
or dinner, we’ve got it right here. Now get out there and EAT!
Historic
Downtown Venice
Downtown Venice’s historic district is a place of
interesting boutiques and individual businesses
for browsing in a relaxing atmosphere of
yesteryear. There are several shady tree-lined
streets in the few blocks that make up the Venice
Downtown Historic District. Park your car and
enjoy strolling up and down. It’s the best way to
appreciate the delightful low-rise architecture
that was purposely modeled on towns in Northern
Italy. The Old Florida atmosphere is enhanced by
antique-style storefronts and handwritten signs,
making this area unique and pleasing.
Independent Shops
Galleries and Restaurants
The three main streets include Miami Avenue, with its independently
owned antique stores, boutiques, and high-end consignment shops.
Main Street (W. Venice Avenue) and Tampa Avenue, which border
Centennial Park compliment with locally owned shops and restaurants.
Altogether the area has over 130 shops, boutiques, and art galleries,
including the Venice Art Center, which you will find on Nokomis
Avenue South. When you’re ready to rest your feet and enjoy some
cool refreshments or a tasty lunch, the area offers plenty of highly
regarded restaurants and cafés. Dine al fresco
and watch the world go by from your seat
beneath a shady awning or galleried walkway.
If you are visiting Downtown Venice with young
children, there’s a fun water park for them to
splash and cool off in the jets at Centennial Park.
Bring a picnic and enjoy a full day at this relaxed
park venue. It’s easy to see why this Historic
Downtown area of Venice continues to thrive.
