Holliston Scholarship
Foundation to Hold 50th Annual
Antique Show
It’s been a half a century since
the Holliston Scholarship Foundation
began its biggest fundraiser,
back when it was the Citizen’s
Scholarship Foundation in 1967.
(In 2013, the group broke away
from the National Organization
Dollars for Scholars, which it
had begun with in 1964, to become
the Holliston Scholarship
Foundation, a 501 c3.) This year’s
event will take place on Saturday
and Sunday, February 25 and 26,
from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Saturday
and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday.
No early birds, please. Admission
is $7 (although Holliston residents
will receive a $1 coupon with their
fundraising letter), and all proceeds
fund scholarships to Holliston
students.
“A group of businessmen and
civic leaders in Holliston sat down
Holliston PTO
Examines Screen Time
Screenagers, Growing Up in the Digital Age
to Be Shown February 15
By J.D. O’Gara
If you have a pre-teen to
teenager, chances are, they
spend a lot of time with
their screens. What’s the
effect of all of this screen
time?
On Wednesday, February
15th, at Holliston High
School, 370 Hollis Street,
Holliston, from 7-9 p.m.
(snow date the following
night, same time), the Holliston
PTO will be screening
the widely praised film,
Screenagers, produced by
Delaney Ruston, a Stanford
trained physician and
www.HopkintonHomeCare.com
social change documentary
filmmaker, who takes a look
at the trend and effects of
more kids getting smart
phones, as well as increased
technology in schools and
for homework. The 68-minute
film explores both the
positive and the negative
aspects of the relationship
teenagers have with their
screens and offers solutions
on how adults can empower
kids to find balance in that
digital world.
ANTIQUE
continued from page 1
gest fundraiser in 1967, the Holliston
Antique Show, and I think
they had 15-20 antique dealers.
They had it in a smaller location.”
Nowadays, that antique show
boasts about 100 dealers from
many locations around New
England, and the dealers spread
out at the Holliston High School
gymnasium. Visitors will find a
wide variety of high quality antiques,
including furniture, paintings,
carnival glass, and comic
books.
“It brings in a lot of people
from outside of Holliston,” says
McGrath. The dealers come
from all over New England, and
people who come to it come from
all around, which I think is significant
to Holliston. That’s what I
like about the antique show. A lot
of out-of-towners who are pulled
to the antique show will go to the
stores downtown.”
The event is always held the
last weekend of February, says
McGrath, with the busiest time
Saturday morning, which sees
about 70% of patrons.
“It’s the biggest antique show
around here and really kicks off
the antique season, at very end of
February,” says McGrath. Booths
sell out just about every year, although
poor weather can prevent
many of the dealers, some advanced
in age, from coming out.
The Holliston Scholarship
Foundation splits the cost of the
event with the promoter, once all
expenses are deducted.
“There is a lot of advertisement
in antique magazines and
journals, for antique dealers in
the area,” says McGrath. In addition,
the scholarship foundation
sends out its annual letter a
few weeks ahead of the sale to
Holliston residents, and inside
the letter is a $1 discount coupon
for admission to the antique
show.
The Holliston Scholarship
Foundation supports students
from Holliston. Last year, they
supported seniors from Holliston
High School and Keefe Tech
with a total of $62,000 in scholarships.
(Due to 10-12 renewable
scholarships, that total will grow
to $65,000 to $70,000, says Mc-
Grath.)
College sophomores, juniors
and seniors received $15,000 this
past year as well.
Many of the scholarships
managed by the Holliston Scholarship
Foundation are memorial
scholarships. This year, a
new scholarship in the name of
Elizabeth Stillings Brooks will
be given. A resident of the town
for over 27 years, “Beth” was
an active member of the Holliston
community along with her
husband, Bob, and the loving
parents of three Holliston High
School graduates (Megan, 2008,
Katie, 2011 and Jack, 2017).
Beth worked in publishing, and
the scholarship will help a graduating
Holliston high school senor
who is interested in English and
writing, says McGrath.
Another new scholarship
added this year, says McGrath,
is one by the local theatre group,
the Washington Street Players.
This group will actually hold a
cabaret fundraiser at Anthony’s
on the Green on February 4th to
raise funds for this scholarship.
Mosaic Art Show, February and March
Students from the Cheryl Cohen Mosaics
Art Center will exhibit their work in February
and March at the Holliston Library, 752
Washington St. The show opening is Saturday,
Feb. 11, 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will
be served. The public is invited to attend.
Cohen, an Ashland resident, has been
teaching mosaic art to adults and children
in her Holliston art studio for 2 ½ years. She
teaches mixed media mosaics that include
tile, glass, shells, rocks, jewelry, broken plates
and pottery, beads, found objects and more.
The show will have a large variety of
pieces, including mosaic picture frames, mirrors,
stools, clocks, shoes pendants and even
a guitar!
“The creativity of my students amazes
me every day,” Cohen said. “I’m very excited
to share their beautiful work with the
community.”
Namara, Network Administrator,
at the Robert Adams Middle
School,” says Lynne Rahim. “I
think that the movie is very relevant
to our times and struggles as
parents and educators. The technology
of today is not something
we grew up with. We worry
about how much screen time is
too much screen time and how
being constantly ‘connected’ is
affecting our kids and our families.
I think that the majority of
us are challenged to keep our
kids present and engaged in the
‘real world.’”
After the movie, there will
be a panel of experts available
for discussion and questions.
The panelists include Darlene
Vittori-Marsell, Pediatric Nurse
Practitioner, Dr. Laurel Watt-
Aldredge, Licensed Psychologist
and John Powers, Middle School
Guidance Counselor.
“I am an adolescent nurse
practitioner,” says Vittori-Marsell,
of Holliston. As a medical
provider for this age group, she
says, “Screens and Internet and
social media is a huge portion of
a teenager’s life. I think as a parent,
one of the hardest things is
we don’t have the tools to know
how to manage screen time, or
if we even should manage it. As
we’re learning, they’re just taking
off with it. I’m hoping the film
will give some insight and answer
some of the same questions
parents have for me during their
well visits.”
time, and links to helpful organizations.
“Because it is something that
most of us struggle with, it makes
sense that this movie has been
very popular with audiences,”
says Rahim. “It’s a documentary
that includes expert testimonial
and hopefully some good ‘take
home’ points. The Holliston
PTO are also hoping that the
movie will generate questions
and meaningful discussion with
our panel of experts.”
Stanford physician Delaney Ruston’s own children inspired her
to examine the effects of increased screen time on young people.
The Holliston PTO will show her highly acclaimed documentary,
Sarah showed the class how
to brush, counting 10 circles on
the front, sides, tops, and backs
of the teeth. Children are much
more eager and willing to take
care of their own dental health
when brushing is turned into a
game, or has a rhythm they can
follow. Try encouraging them
to recite a song, like the ABCs,
once or twice in their head as a
way of learning how long two
minutes of brushing is.
A Dental Visit is Fun!
Sarah showed the different
tools used in our office, like a mirror
and an explorer. Letting children
explore the tools on their
own outside of a dentist’s chair
eases any apprehension they may
have, and even encourages them
to be curious about what takes
place during a dental visit.
Healthy Habits.
The children learned some
simple habits that they can practice
to keep their teeth healthy
- such as choosing chocolate
instead of hard or sticky candy,
and avoiding sipping on juice,
milk or sports drinks throughout
the day. When they are encouraged
and taught to make good
choices from the very beginning,
they do not have to worry about
dental health as they grow up!
When should your
child first see a dentist?
Because a child’s smile is so intimately
linked to self-esteem and
confidence, Dr. Diab emphasizes
starting early. When that very
first tooth erupts, parents should
begin regular dental care.
“Our practice is geared
toward little kids,” pediatric
dentist Dr. Diab says of Dental
Place Hopkinton… “from
infants on up, we cater to their
needs.” Dental Place Hopkinton,
along with its sister practices in
Westborough, Wayland, and Weston,
(and coming soon, Millis!) have pediatric,
adolescent, and adult
dentistry as well as orthodontics
to form an all-in-one package
for a family’s varying needs.
“We pride ourselves on preventative
dentistry,” says Dr.
Diab. “We educate the child and
parent together on oral hygiene
and proper diet so these become
habitual. That sets the child on
the right track.”
And if things aren’t on the
right track, an orthodontist is
available right down the hall.
“Think of it as proactive orthodontics,”
says orthodontist
Dr. Kenneth Webb. “There are
more options when you start
younger.”
Our aim at Dental Place Hopkinton
is to ensure that maintaining
children’s dental health
becomes second nature from
the beginning, not something
that has to be a constant care
or worry. We encourage you to
visit our website for more valuable
dental care information.
We’d be more than happy to
answer any questions you might
have about how to help your
children maintain their beautiful
smiles and we look forward to
seeing you in our office soon!
Builders and Remodelers Are Optimistic about 2017
For most building and remodeling
companies, 2016 was
a banner year. This trend looks
like it will roll into 2017 as new
construction, remodeling, and
home improvement sales remain
robust. It’s hard to drive
more than a block or two without
seeing a house with a construction
dumpster in the yard
or a remodeling crew on the
property. It appears that everyone
you talk to is having work
done on their homes. Things
are looking good in the building
business. To explore this further,
here’s a look at the pulse
of the building and remodeling
industry for 2017.
Business owners in the industry
are very optimistic. Consumer
demand for home improvement
and new housing is keeping most
companies extremely busy. This
RonsTire.com
is also trickling down to sub
trades from roofers to painters
and everyone in between. The
demand is causing many reputable
contractors to have a significant
backlog of work.
While this is a great “problem”
to have, it can impact the
timeline for the customer. If
you are planning a project, you
should be aware that the timing
you are hoping for is not always
achievable for busier respected
firms. Factor in extra time to your
own timeline so you can wait for
a respected and reliable company
to be available to do your work.
If you really want to know
how the economy looks in the
remodeling world, ask a banker!
I talked with Brian Hanley from
Middlesex Bank, and Michael
Isaac from Needham bank, to get
their thoughts.
Ron Saponaro
Brian Hanley, a commercial
lender at Middlesex Savings
Bank, says, “Things have ticked
up a notch, that’s for sure. My
customers have been busy across
the board.” Hanley noted, “2017
should be a good year.”
Michael Isaac, a residential
lender at Needham Bank, says
he’s expecting a very busy year
as well. “There are some great
programs out there for first time
home buyers, with 3 to 5 percent
down, so that’s helping stimulate
some home sales.” Isaac said.
“When homes are selling, that’s
good for the remodeling industry...2017
will be busy, and even
if rates move up, building and
remodeling will stay strong.”
Clearly, the outlook for 2017
for the building industry is extremely
positive and upbeat. This
is especially true in our area, including
Boston and metro areas
inside the 495 belt, which have
traditionally stayed busier than
other parts of the country in
both the real estate and building/
remodeling industry. Because of
this, expect a bit of a wait from
reputable contractors.
Remember, there’s no benefit
in getting a project done a month
or two earlier if the workmanship
is poor. A good contractor will be
honest with you from the start
about any backlog or schedule
limitations. If you are planning a
project this year, just be sure to
plan a little further ahead than
you may think. You’ll end up
with the right contractor, and it
will be worth the wait.
One Book,
One Holliston to Feature Dominic Smith February 8
The annual community reading
program One Book, One
Holliston asks the question:
“what if all of Holliston read the
same book at the same time?” It
is a community-wide program
to draw readers to important
authors, books and themes and
to help them share ideas and
the love of reading. One Book,
One Holliston takes place each
February with funding from the
Friends of the Library and the
TD Bank Affinity program.
The 2017 selection is Dominic
Smith’s Art Mystery The Last
Painting of Sara De Vos. Across
three continents and four hundred
years, Smith has spun a
stunning tale of forgeries and
deaths, deception and love to reveal
the lasting legacy of a fateful
brush stroke. He uses a single
painting to tell the story of two
women—their mistakes and love
affairs, their devotion to art and
their struggles to thrive in a male
dominated profession.
Dominic Smith will visit with
us by telephone on Wed, February
8, 2017 at 7 p.m. to answer
questions about his work. Followed
by discussion. Copies of
the book are available to borrow
With a Joyful Heart
Volunteers Sew Colorful Quilts as Comfort
for Chemo Patients
By Deborah Burke Henderson,
Contributing Writer
Fifteen volunteers, including
Susan Mogren of Holliston,
gathered together to create
handmade quilts at The Power
of the Quilt Project’s annual MLK
Day community service quilt-athon
last month. In all, 14 colorful
quilts were finished, and these
will be given to men and women
undergoing chemotherapy treatments
at the Harvard Vanguard
Medical Center in Kenmore
Square, Boston.
With an eye for mixing and
matching colorful fabric patterns,
Mogren sorted through
six bins of cotton material to
make color-coordinated “quilt
top kits.” She plans to measure
and cut the fabrics at the spring
quilt-a-thon on Saturday, April 8,
2017, at the Unitarian Universalist
Area Church, First Parish of
Sherborn.
The Power of the Quilt Project,
first established in 2003, is one
of the UUAC’s many service
and justice ministries. The work
of volunteer sewers and quilters
from area towns contribute to
about 200 quilts for distribution
annually. Some are given to Project
Linus to bring warmth and
comfort to young children staying
in hospitals or shelters.
the project or to RSVP for the
spring quilt-a-thon, contact PQP
By Cris Valas, DVM, The
Family Pet Hospital, an AAFP-
According to statistics available
to the American Association
of Feline Practitioners (AAFP),
there are 86 million cats in
America, versus 78 million dogs,
yet few cats receive regular veterinary
care, and most are only
brought in when they are quite
sick. Why is this?
Cats are good at hiding their
illnesses, so owners may not recognize
there is a health problem,
and owners admit getting to the
vets can be stressful for both
them and their pet.
Most cats don’t like to get in
pet carriers. They don’t like riding
in cars. Cats encounter overwhelming
dog smells in the vet’s
waiting room, and dogs may
nose up to the carrier, contributing
to the cat’s fearful experience.
Some vet hospitals are doing
everything possible to minimize
stress on cats and their owners.
In 2012, the AAFP created
the Cat Friendly Practice®
(CFP) program. Each approved
CFP practice has demonstrated
its dedication to increasing the
quality of care felines receive.
MassBay Students Present State
Police with Teddy Bear Donation
MassBay is pleased to announce
five students raised $700
in donations on a GoFundMe
page and purchased 100 teddy
bears for the Massachusetts State
Police as part of their Group Process
Class in the Human Services
program. The students involved
in the project are; Vania Dias
of Framingham, Melissa Bell of
Framingham, John Mattingly of
Marlborough, Nancy Maillet of
Holliston, and Stephanie Kean
of Boston.
The students extensively researched
community outreach
programs as part of their class
project and decided to put their
efforts into a program that assists
children. Melissa Bell suggested
the idea of donating the teddy
bears to the Massachusetts State
Police after talking to her father, a
retired police Sergeant, and then
speaking with some friends in
the law enforcement community.
The group decided the donations
raised on the crowdfunding site
would be used to purchase teddy
bears for law enforcement to have
on-hand in emergency situations
involving children, serving as a
comfort to young kids. This type
of comfort helps children reduce
fear and stress, while building a
rapport with law enforcement officials
during stressful situations.
The group presented the
teddy bear donations to the Massachusetts
State Police at their
Framingham Headquarters on
Monday, December 19, 2016.
Achieve Clear Skin
Acne. Not Just for Teens.
By Lisa Massimiano, Licensed
Esthetician, Certified Acne Specialist,
Owner Skin Smart Salon
Acne is often thought of as a teenage
rite of passage, starting at puberty and disappearing
by the time a person turns 18.
This however, is just another one of the
many myths about acne. The truth is 50%
of adults continue to suffer from acne into
adulthood.
What causes adult acne?
Some people never “outgrow” their acne.
Other people have adult onset acne, breaking
out for the first time in their twenties and
thirties. Why their acne remained dormant
in their adolescence is a mystery, but many
things can contribute to the onset of adult
acne.
Hormonal fluctuations caused by pregnancy,
menstrual periods and menopause
can cause acne flare-ups in women.
Medical conditions like PCOS (polycystic
ovarian syndrome) or thyroid disorder can
affect the skin. High androgen birth control
pills can worsen acne.
Pore-clogging ingredients can aggravate
acne. Daily use of inappropriate
moisturizers, makeup, sunscreens, shaving
creams, after shave lotions and hair products
can lead to breakouts.
Recreational and prescription drugs
including: marijuana, cocaine, steroids Lithium
and thyroid medication.
Stress. It can aggravate hormones that
lead to acne flare ups. The higher your stress
level, the more prone you are to break out.
Treating adult acne.
The challenge of treating adult acne is
that adult skin is generally drier and more
sensitive. It is important to start slowly with
the right strength of acne –clearing products.
This allows the skin to adapt gradually and
avoid excess dryness and irritation.
At Skin Smart Salon I work with both teen and
adult acne sufferers to help them achieve a lifetime of
clear skin. There is no need for anyone to be embarrassed
by acne and the scars it can leave behind.
Holliston Teachers Honored in Worcester
Both Mr. Chris Murphy and
Mrs. Kathryn Buckley were honored
in the annual Massachusetts
Academy of Math and Science
(Mass Academy) Teacher Appreciation
Day on Wednesday,
November 16. The State Legislature
of Massachusetts founded
Mass Academy in 1992 as a public
school to serve academically
advanced youth in grades eleven
and twelve in math, science, and
technology. Mass Academy is located
on the campus of Worcester
Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
Holliston residents and Mass
Academy students Jenna Pralat
and Kent Perlmutter, as well as
all other Mass Academy juniors,
were given the opportunity to
invite a former teacher who had
a significant influence on their
love of learning to a ceremony
to show teacher appreciation.
Jenna Pralat chose Mr. Murphy
and Kent Perlmutter chose Mrs.
Buckley.
Mr. Murphy teaches in the
English Department at Holliston
High School, and Mrs. Buckley
teaches 6th grade science at
Robert Adams Middle School.
The event gave the teachers and
students the occasion to catch up
on their lives and to reminisce.
Mrs. Buckley indicated that she
was happy to see Kent after all
this time and remembered the
fun times that their class had:
“We had so much fun that it was
ridiculous!”, Mrs. Buckley said.
At the ceremony, teachers
from schools across Massachusetts
were honored for their
contributions to student success.
When Jenna Pralat shared how
Mr. Murphy helped her become
a better writer, she explained, “I
had learned how I need to prepare
for essays, and discovered
the environment in which I write
best. He helped reinforce the
idea that working hard counts
for something and that people
will notice my efforts. Despite my
recurring stress with every essay
and test, Mr. Murphy helped me
grow my confidence that my interpretations
were well founded
and developed.”
During the event, each student
welcomed their honored guest to
the Academy, gave them a tour
of the school, introduced them
to their classmates and current
teachers, and shared lunch. The
students relished their opportunity
to say thank you to their
teachers for preparing them for
success. Mr. Murphy remarked,
“One student after the other gave
the most genuine display of gratitude
to those who have helped
or inspired or challenged them
that I have ever seen. There was
plenty of laughter, a few tears,
and a great sense of pride for
both the students and the guests
being recognized.” After lunch,
guests were greeted by Mass
Academy Director Michael Barney
and Dr. Art Heinricher.
“Mass Academy appreciates
the efforts of all teachers across
the Commonwealth and established
this annual event as a way
to celebrate the work of those
teachers who have had an impact
on our students’ lives,” said Direcotr
Barney, Dean of Undergraduate
Studies at WPI. “We
appreciate the fact that our students’
success is a collaborative
effort. We recognize that their
sending school districts and the
exemplary instruction that they
have received in their prior years
should be celebrated.”
After the greetings, the juniors
brought their honored guests to
the podium, one by one, to describe
how each teacher was an
inspiration. Kent Perlmutter described
to Mrs. Buckley how she
was influential in his desire to
study science: “I looked forward
to going to your class every day
to learn about different aspects
of science whether it was by exploring
the vernal pool, looking
at cells through microscopes, or
doing dissections. Your class projects
were both challenging and
fun! Your unique way of teaching
science made science compelling
and fascinating and has
inspired me to pursue science as
my future career.”
Both teachers were thrilled
with being honored. Mr. Murphy
mentioned that he “was very
surprised and moved to be honored
by Jenna, especially as an
English teacher invited to a math
and science academy event.” He
went on to explain, “I think we
all hope to help our students in
academic ways, and sometimes
with personal or social concerns,
but what they seem to remember
most is when we listen. Jenna
is one of the students who has
taught me that. Her choosing to
honor me that day reminded me
that we often don’t realize the
long-lasting positive impact we
can have through the simplest,
most subtle gestures we offer
in the course of a day. Perhaps
more importantly, Jenna inspired
me to call and say thank you to
one of my high school teachers;
and oddly enough, he was a
math and science teacher.”
Mrs. Buckley summed it up
perfectly: “It was very moving
to hear the stories the students
told about their teachers, and
I was incredibly honored by
Kent’s speech. I was telling my
husband that it was the closest
a teacher could get to the Academy
Awards, but better because
of the kids.”
Shouldn’t this be
Holliston Hockey Will Be Looking to Its
Captains for Leadership
By Christopher Tremblay
It’s been two years since the Holliston
hockey team graced the Division 3 South
State Tournament with their presence.
Back in 2015, Holliston barely advanced
into post-season play with a 9-9-2 record,
but tournament play is different than
regular season hockey, and the Panthers
made their presence known. As the 20
seed in a 23 team tournament bracket
Holliston played above and beyond their
means as the Panthers upset Somerset/
Berkley 3-2 in a shootout and Mashpee/
Monomoy 1-0 before falling to Cohasset
in the Quarter Finals.
Sitting at 3-4-2 with over half the season
still on the slate, the Panthers are still
in contention to get back into the tournament.
If the team is to once again make a
run through the tournament, the squad’s
five captains, three seniors and two juniors,
are going to be the ones that get the
younger players moving in the right direction.
Senior goalie Adam Kampersal is considered
the vocal captain, according to second
year coach Dan Geary; while senior
winger Kyle McDevitt is a hard working,
lead-by-example player and senior defenseman
David Sancomb is the lunch pail
captain. The other two captains are junior
center Jack Larche, the motivator who gets
the team rowing in the right direction, and
junior defenseman Jack Wilke, who is an
assistant captain and probably the best
overall player on the team. Wilke is not
only a player the rest of the team looks up
to, but one they also respect.
As the team’s net minder, Kampersal
Holliston hockey is a close knit group that
aims to work together with the goal of a
tourney this year. The team will rely on
its captains, Adam Kampersal #29, David
Sancomb #15, Jack Larche #7, Jack Wilkie
#3 and Kyle McDevitt #11, to help get them
there.
feels his position is one in which he can
make a real difference on the ice, but also
believes this year’s squad is much more
prepared to venture into the tournament
this winter.
“Last year we had a lot of suspensions,
injuries and only about 15 or 16 players.
With such limited numbers, it makes it
tough on the rest of the team,” the goalie
said. “This year, I’m looking to get this
team back into the playoffs and hopefully,
do better than what we did two years ago
when we went to the Quarter Finals.”
Although, having four captains and
an assistant, if the Panthers are going to
make it into the playoffs, they are going to
have to get the younger players caught up
to speed and make sure they stay on the
same page.
“We have a lot of freshman on this
year’s team, which should also provide the
team with a lot more depth than we had
last year,” McDevitt said. “I also believe
that we have a better group of leaders
with everyone working toward the same
goal. Last year, we had a tough time working
together as a team, everyone was not
on the same page.”
Sancomb, the team’s physical player
when it comes to working the corners,
agrees with his co-captain on getting the
younger players on the same page if Holliston
is going to make any noise in the
tournament.
“I myself am a lead by example guy
who doesn’t mind doing the dirty work
for the benefit of the team. We have nine
freshmen on this year’s team, and I want
to get them going,” he said. “We all want
to get back to the tournament – I keep
telling them the tournament is the best
part of high school hockey.”
Larche, who is the only junior captain,
is obviously honored to hold such
an honor at his age and believes he is a
good mix with the other captains but it’s
the coach who is supplying the system the
team plays on the ice.
“Last year was a transition phase for
the team having Coach Geary take over
about a week before the season got underway,”
he said. “He had a new system,
and we had to adapt. Our last coach was
a big dump and chase guy while Coach
Geary wants us to control the puck, skate
into the zone, work on our passing and set
up plays.”
As the team’s only assistant captain junior
Wilke finds that this year’s squad a
lot tougher than last years.
“It’s an honor to wear a letter on my
jersey, no matter what it is; I’m here to
help this team and be a good leader and
do whatever it takes to help this team
win,” Wilke said. “There are a lot of
hard workers on this team; guys who
can get on the forecheck, bang some
bodies and get those dirty goals. If I
take the younger guys under my win
and teach them – I believe that we’ll
definitely make the tournament.”
The team’s other junior captain
agrees with Wilke.
“This team did a lot of off season
work to get better. We’re looking to
grab those 10 points and get into the
playoffs; that would be huge,” Larche said.
“Of course we all want to win every time
that we step onto the ice, but we don’t
need to win every game, we just need to
play sound defense and prevent all the ties.
In the past, we haven’t been able to bare
down in the last minute of games.”
Kampersal not only believes that his
teammates are all in when it comes to the
actual game time, but the team also likes
to get together off the ice as well.
“We’re a close knit group, probably the
best in the last four years, with no one star
player so we work extremely hard together
to win games,” the goalie said.
While the team is hovering around
.500, their chances of making the tournament
remain good, but if they all get on
the same page at the same time, Holliston
is bound to make the tournament, and
once they get there, who knows what they
can accomplish?

Medway/Ashland Hockey Team
Raises $1,252 For Lamson Scholarship Fund
For the girls on the Medway/
Ashland ice hockey team, it
seems like their friend, Maddie
Lamson, never left them.
Lamson was killed in a tragic
car accident in Franklin on Oct.
30, 2015, just a month before
she would have led the hockey
team as a senior co-captain. The
squad, comprised of girls from
Medway, Ashland, Holliston
and Millis, who usually compete
against one another in the Tri-
Valley League in other sports,
were faced with a tragedy that
no one should experience, especially
during one’s high school
days. Lamson had always made
the girls feel like a family, and the
girls willed themselves to play
that season and dedicate every
game to their friend, leader and
teammate.
Today, they continue to display
her game shirt, with No. 11
showing, at every game and practice
— not because they need to
be reminded of who she was, but
because she still inspires them.
Kurt Carter, the veteran coach
of the team, said that he likes to
instill in his younger players, who
did not know Lamson, how important
she was to the team, and
that displaying the shirt emphasizes
that message.
In Marlboro, on Saturday,
January 14, Medway/Ashland
faced off against league opponent
Westwood at New England
Sports Center in a game that
was played in honor of Lamson,
who also played field hockey and
lacrosse. The players and the
team’s coaches wanted to pay
tribute to a young woman who
influenced many lives and to
emphasize that she still plays an
ongoing role in the lives of many
of the players; most notably the
seniors.
The team used the game to
collect donations to benefit the
Fund. Westwood’s players and
coaches were the perfect partner
for the event and played an active
role in the ceremony. There was
a huge turnout of former players
and friends of the Lamson family,
all who came out to support
the family and honor Lamson’s
memory.
Bob Lamson, Maddie’s father,
who was in attendance with her
mother, Alyson, and other family
members, said that he’s always
amazed by the tremendous impact
that his daughter had on the
team. He knows that she was also
impacted by the many friendships
she established. A former
teammate, Emily Munger, who
was a senior when Lamson was
a freshman, said: “As a freshman,
Maddie was the heart of the
team. She was and she always
will be.’’
The event raised $1,252 for
the scholarship fund and, very
fittingly, Medway/Ashland defeated
Westwood, 3-1.
Energetic Alibrandi Provides Spark
For Holliston Quintet
By KEN HAMWEY
Co-captain Michael Alibrandi isn’t a prolific scorer
for Holliston High’s basketball team, but the senior point
guard has been a dynamic catalyst who’s helped elevate
the Panthers to a 7-1 record after eight games and into a
tie for first place in the Tri Valley League standings.
The 6-foot, 159-pounder is an all-around competitor
who contributes on both ends of the court, provides energy
from start to finish, and works diligently to control
Holliston’s up-tempo offense. Coach Jenna Galster labels
Alibrandi “a major reason for our success,’’ and admires
not only his work ethic, but also his off-season regimen.
“Michael contributes wherever we need him,’’ said
Galster, who’s in her fourth year as Holliston coach. “He
plays solid defense, distributes the ball effectively and has
terrific court awareness. He’s a take-charge guy in practice
who leads on and off the court.’’
A lanky guard, his long arms are keys to his defensive
ability and his blocking an inordinate amount of shots.
Alibrandi’s per game averages are 9 points, 4 assists, 3
steals, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. “I take pride in defense
and prefer to be a pass-first point guard,’’ he noted. “I
enjoy running our offense and dealing with the pressure
of maintaining an up-tempo pace.’’
A starter as a sophomore when the Panthers went
1-19, Alibrandi didn’t let that season dampen his outlook
or his attitude. Last year, the Panthers bounced back, finished
10-10 and split a pair of games in tourney play.
Now, they’re setting the pace as a TVL power.
“All of us stayed positive after that one-win season,’’
Alibrandi emphasized. “And, we never gave up. We were
0-19 but won our last game against Dover-Sherborn.”
Alibrandi’s prime focus this season is to win as many
games as possible, but he’s acutely aware that a tourney
berth is right around the corner. “The tourney is our
goal, and we’d like to make some noise in the playoffs,’’
he said. “It’s a different atmosphere. There’s more pressure
but we were calm last year, especially in our win over
Milford.’’
Rating Holliston’s victory over Natick last year in the
Keough Tournament a thrill because it gave the Panthers
their 10th win and put them into the tourney, Alibrandi
also liked his effort against Milford. “I played solid on
defense, scored 15 points and sank three of four threepointers,’’
he recalled. “So far this season, I’d rate my
game against Millis as my best. I drove down the middle
for a layup with three seconds to go and forced overtime.
We won, 70-63, in the extra session.’’
Alibrandi, however, is quick to credit a host of other
players for Holliston’s upswing. He admires the other
starters — co-captain Andrew Lynch, Will Rowe, Spencer
Aronson and Dylan Kasarjin. And, he likes the contributions
of reserves Jack Barrett, Patrick Jewett, Ryan
Benco and Mina Shehata.
“Andrew is a quality leader who can drive to the hoop
and also shoot effectively,’’ Alibrandi said. “Will is our
center and he can shoot and rebound. Spencer was a
TVL all-star as a freshman. He can score and create opportunities.
Dylan defends well and is a capable ball-handler.
Jack can rebound and he’s a hard-worker. Patrick,
Ryan and Mina are solid contributors every game.’’
Also a fan of his coach, Alibrandi says his teammates
strive to live up to Galster’s expectations. “She sets the
bar high, and we strive to meet her expectations,’’ he said.
“She’s a good motivator who knows the game. When we
were struggling in the past, she helped build our confidence.’’
An honor-roll student, Alibrandi has been accepted to
Mount Ida College in Newton where he plans to major in
psychology and minor in sports management. The recipient
of a financial-aid package to the Division 3 school,
he has committed to playing lacrosse but is unsure if he’ll
pursue basketball. A midfielder, Alibrandi was a TVL allstar
last year in lacrosse.
Relying on a competitive philosophy that stresses winning,
reaching one’s potential and having fun, Alibrandi
says athletics have helped him learn valuable life lessons.
“You learn to build relationships, set goals, work as a
team, overcome adversity, and assume responsibility.
Alibrandi understands that success comes with a price.
And, he paid it in the off-season by attending camps,
playing in summer and fall leagues and working out.
Holliston High Boys’ Basketball’s Co-captain Michael
Alibrandi is top notch leader on and off the court.
A fan of the Celtics’ Isaiah Thomas, Alibrandi wears
number 4 because he identifies with the 5-foot-9 point
guard. “Isaiah was the last pick of the draft and he’s undersized,
but he represents himself well,’’ Alibrandi said.
“He’s made a name for himself, and our team is similar to
him. We’re trying to make a name for ourselves.’’
So far, it’s mission accomplished for the Panthers on
that front.
In Real Estate, Spring is Here!
Submitted by: Vesta Real Estate Group
If you have ever bought or
sold a house, peruse the listings,
or just surf on Zillow from
time to time, you are familiar
with the term “spring market”
in real estate. If you google it,
scores of articles appear, mostly
about the predictions for the
upcoming season. This article
attempts to help clarify – what
is the spring market and is it
the right time for you to sell
your house, or look to buy one?
The answer is very individual,
and the factors to consider are
several. Whatever your preference,
the first decision to make
is choosing a qualified and experienced
realtor to help you
navigate all aspects of the marketplace.
Spring Market – What Does
That Mean?
Spring market, also known
in real estate circles as “selling
season” is the period in the year
where the bulk of home sales
are transacted. Since this period
is not marked by the calendar,
the term “spring” market
is a bit of a misnomer. There
are many variables that go into
it: the economy, the region, the
setting – urban, suburban, rural
- and of course the most unpredictable
one, the weather. For
simplicity’s sake, this article will
discuss what is meant by selling
season in the Metrowest region,
From L to R: Joan Shaughnessy, Liz Kelly, Ed Daniels, Doriane Daniels, Jennifer Lecesse
presuming a relatively stable
economy, and weather that is
not marked by historical highs
and lows.
What Defines “Spring
Market?”
The spring market is loosely
defined as when things heat
up – that is, when listings start
coming onto Multiple Listing
Service, commonly known as
“MLS”, and when buyers start
to look in earnest for their next
home. It’s a symbiosis of sorts
– listings need looking buyers,
and home searchers can’t look
if there is no inventory. It’s a
chicken and egg proposition;
which needs to come first, or
which is more important? The
simple answer is that it can go
either way. In a seller’s market
PLUMBING • AIR CONDITIONING • HEATING
Residential and Commercial
FREE
Estimates
Licensed &
Insured
– more people are looking to
buy than people selling their
homes. In a buyer’s market, the
reverse is true – there are more
listings available than there are
buyers, putting those looking
to purchase in the position of
power or leverage. At the end
of the day, it takes both sides of
the equation, buyers and sellers,
to act for a “market” to occur.
When Does It Start?
As mentioned above, weather
is the big unknown, and a significant
factor in when the market
sees increasing activity. If there
is a particularly cold winter, or
when the Metrowest is “blessed”
with a lot of snow and ice – remember
2014/15’s snowmageddon?
– the season may start
when the weather lets up and
is more mild. People simply do
not have the desire to trudge
through snow mounds and over
black ice to look at houses. Sellers
are also less than interested
in struggling with snow and concerns
of buyers safety on their
property during poor weather
conditions. The mild winter
weather of 2016 brought buyers
out early, and activity started
in late January and early February.
Weather aside, the launch
of selling season is a delicate
dance of sorts – when buyers
start looking, overall activity
picks up, and listings can start
to sprout up in early February.
Typically – as though anything
in New England can be categorized
that way! – in Metrowest
Boston, the spring market heats
up after February school vacation.
JOYCE
508-497-6344
joyceplumbingandheating.com
When Does It End?
Curiously, the ending of selling
season is more consistent
across regions than the beginning
of spring market. Activity
seems to slow down around
Mother’s Day, and the unofficial
“finish line” is Memorial Day.
This phenomenon has its outliers:
in 2016, for example, the
market continued on a steady
hum through July. Of course,
sellers sell homes every day, and
buyers in turn buy them. Why
a bulk of the activity ends in
May is a curious trend. One
theory is that a significant number
of home transactions occur
in the months leading up to
the summer is directly related
to people’s desire to move during
that season. This school
of thought is related to, well,
school. Parents like to plan this
way to minimize the interruption
of the school year, particularly
when the move involves
a change in school district for
their children. These moves are
intentionally timed to have the
move occur when the children
are not in school and the family
will be ensconced in their new
home and community when
school starts in the fall. Others
who prefer a summer move
may be based on a preference to
not move in inclement weather;
moving and blizzards just don’t
mix. Another contributing factor
is that late spring is a busy
time for many people, their attentions
are turned to the flurry
of things happening: graduations,
recitals, weddings, summer
plans.
In our next article, we will
discuss strategies for buying
a home in the spring market,
and how to best prepare your
home – and yourself! – to sell
during this busy time in real estate.
Regardless of when you
sell your home, or buy a new
one, the wisest first step is to
find an experienced Realtor to
guide you every step of the way.
