Lehasa, 22, is one of
the top 30 finalists in
the Miss
Commonwealth
beauty pageant.
Lehasa, who is
originally from Gauteng,
has lived in the Eastern
Cape for the past five
years. She is currently
studying towards her
M a st e r ’s qualification at
Rhodes University, and
said she had wanted to
enter a beauty pageant
ever since she was a
high school pupil.
“I have always been
into the idea of joining a
pageant – this is back in
high school – and my
mom said ‘no’ until last
year, when I finished my
honours and I was trying
to figure out what’s the
next step in my life,”
Lehasa said.
“Nobody actually tells
you what you do after
varsity. I knew I didn’t
want to start working
yet, because I just
wanted to explore my
purpose for a minute.
“I did research on how
pageants work, what
each pageant stands for.
“I decided I would like
to start with Miss
Commonwealth,” Lehasa
said, “Because of what
they stand for.”
Lehasa spoke about
her own initiatives as a
contestant, explaining
why she placed so much
emphasis on developing
skills for young South
African children as
opposed to other forms
of community upliftment
i n i t i at i v e s .
She has a BCom
(Hons) in information
systems and is
teaching computer
skills to young,
unprivileged South
Africans.
“I teach computer
skills at Fikizolo
Primary School in
G r a h a m st o w n , ” Lehasa
said.
“I teach them
computer skills not to
say ‘okay, now I know
how to use a computer’,
but to open their minds
up to a lot of things that
are out there in the
world that they are not
exposed to.
“In these lessons I
teach them how to type,
how to surf the internet,
how to create a
Po w e r Po i n t
p r e s e n t at i o n , ” Lehasa
said.
“These are little kids in
primary school, and I
believe they should
know how to do these
things.”
“Even just simple
things, like being an app
developer, or software
developer ... Now those
aren’t like far-fetched
dreams to them the
minute they can interact
with a computer.
“I believe my purpose
is to enable others to
better their lives. I
turned it around and
asked myself how I
could help people to
better their own lives?
“What do I give them?
“What do I teach
them? I looked within
and wondered ‘what do I
have to give somebody
else to ensure that they
use that to better their
lives?’.”
The Miss
Commonwealth Pageant
aims to empower
I asked myself how I
could help people
to better their
own lives
women with knowledge
to bring about change to
communities in need.
A media press release
about the pageant
elaborates: “Through the
Miss Commonwealth
South Africa Pageant, a
platform is created for
women to become
charity ambassadors,
touching lives and
making a difference
in our country. This is
also a stepping stone
for young women to
follow their dreams.
“The title holders
become involved in
charitable causes and
uphold the aims and
objectives of the
Commonwealth. This
includes racial harmony,
poverty eradication and
social cohesion.”
The final of the
OVER the next four weeks, Times Media Community Newspapers –
the Go! & Express, The Rep and the Talk of the Town – will sport a
pink ribbon in our mastheads. The ribbon signifies our solidarity in
the fight against breast cancer and serves as our tribute to
survivors and to those who have lost the battle.
Calm returns after
borehole dispute
ROB KNOWLES
IN contrast to a
previous meeting, when
farmers walked out on
proceedings, this time a
meeting between
farmers, Amatola Water
and independent
geohydrology
specialists SRK
Consulting last Friday at
Zest Café ended
a m i c a b l y.
Aside from councillor
Ray Schenk, there were
no representatives from
Ndlambe Municipality
present.
Boreholes on farms
around the area have
run dry, and farmers are
angry that Amatola
Water has used up
groundwater essential
to their cattle and crops
to feed Port Alfred with
potable water as part of
its bulk water project.
The company has sunk
boreholes at various
farms in the area, a
contentious issue
among many of the
farmers present, and
farmers feel they are
being strong-armed by
Amatola Water and that
their problems are not
being listened to, let
alone addressed.
“If proven that our
boreholes seriously
affect the livelihoods of
the farmers, the DWS
[Department of Water
and Sanitation] will not
allow us to continue,”
said Steve Landolt,
project manager for
Amatola Water’s call
down unit, responsible
for the Ndlambe bulk
water project.
“We need to measure
the impact of our
extraction of the water
before we can make
any plans. But I want to
assure you there is no
pre-set outcome. This is
just an attempt to make
sure we are in
possession of the
correct data to make a
decision, and your
cooperation is
essential,” Landolt said.
Due to some bad
experiences in the past,
farmers are concerned
about allowing Amatola
Water access to their
properties. Also, the
statistics as presented
by the previous analysts
were hotly disputed by
farmers and hence the
appointment of SRK
Consulting.
There were also
contentious issues
around the licensing of
boreholes by fa r m e r s ,
as well as the use by
Amatola Water and
Ndlambe Municipality
of boreholes after the
licence to use them had
¿

ĂůŬŽĨŚĞŽŶ
ΛĂůŬŽŌŚĞŽŶĞĐ
ĂůŬŽĨŚĞŽŶŶĚůĂŵďĞ

expired.
After Landolt had
given his assurances
that there was no
prescribed outcome for
the analysis, and that
the DWS would not
allow a project to
continue that seriously
harmed farms or the
ecology, farmers agreed
to cooperate.
Amatola Water will
therefore sink boreholes
and install loggers
(equipment to monitor
essential data) which
will be regularly
inspected and
maintained.
Another problem in
the past has been the
loss of water from
leaking pipes and
pumps and the
subsequent water
wastage. SRK will
monitor levels and
flows and, in conjunction
with water-flow
meters at the
municipality, should be
able to determine how
much water is being
lost due to leakages.
Eunice Goossens
from SRK explained
some of the
technicalities and
promised to address
some of the farmers’
issues before the next
meeting, scheduled for
10am at Zest Café on
Friday November 18.
Winners chosen in photo competition
Festive season planning
sees same issues raised
ROB KNOWLES
LAST week’s seasonal
planning meeting was
well attended by
Ndlambe Municipality,
the SAPS, emergency
services, councillors
and members of the
public, but those
present brought up
the same issues as at
all previous meetings.
The intention was to
craft a plan for Port
Alfred and Kenton-on-
Sea for the New Year’s
Eve celebrations.
Seafield and
Boknes/Cannon Rocks
would establish their
own plans in a
separate meeting.
The SAPS, headed
by cluster commander
Brigadier Morgan
Govender, said there
simply were not
enough officers to
enforce drinking laws,
and that the SAPS
would focus on
preventing public
violence, drinking and
driving and other
crimes such as housebreaking.
Govender also
explained that his
cluster now included
areas further afield,
such as Hamburg, and
his force would
therefore be more
spread-out than in
previous years.
As for public
drinking, a hot topic
every year, Govender
said he did not have
the manpower to
arrest perpetrators,
but that the SAPS
would step in if such
drinking led to crimes.
Deputy director of
community protection
services for Ndlambe,
Fanie Fouche, was at
pains to point out that
this was not tacit
permission for people
to drink.
“As long as people
do not infringe on the
rights of others to
enjoy themselves, and
also do not break
bottles and leave
rubbish on the
beaches, we have to
accept that people will
be drinking,” he said.
With an estimated
30 000 plus visitors to
the area, specifically
on New Year’s Eve and
the following day,
Fouche said ablution
facilities, as well as
access to the beaches,
was a priority.
“Access to the
beaches by emergency
vehicles is a priority,
so we are
reintroducing the oneway
system on our
streets leading to the
beaches in Port
Alfred,” he said.
Tim Cockbain, of the
Port Alfred Residents
and Ratepayers
Association, said that
marshals were not
adequately trained to
cope with enforcing
traffic rules.
In response, Fo u c h e
said training would be
intensified this year.
The same went for
lifeguards, who will be
stationed at all
swimming beaches in
Port Alfred, as well as
in Kenton.
The question of
fences being installed
at the traffic lights at
the intersection of
Causway and the R72
to prevent people
crossing into the
krantz area, which
Fouche insisted was
not a “drinking area”,
was not accepted by
some present.
The Ndlambe
infrast ructure
directorate was not
present to answer the
question of whether
the resurfacing of
Beach Road would be
completed before the
holiday season, which
would cause a
dramatic change in
the way West Beach
and Kelly’s Beaches
would be accessed.
Fouche also said
anyone caught setting
off fireworks without
licences or other
permission would be
breaking the law and
would be punished.
ANC councillor
Stwiga Njibani asked
why drinking rules
were not imposed
during the university

SECURITY FEATURES
boat races, but were
at New Year’s. He
questioned whether it
was not racist.
DSRAC funded the
frustration for
members of the
librar y.

Hunt for killer after
tavern brawl death
A MAN was stabbed to
death and his brother
wounded in a brawl in
a tavern in Wentzel
early hours on Sunday.
Police are
investigating a charge
of murder and another
of attempted murder,
police spokeswoman
Captain Mali Govender
said.
She said an
altercation had started
over the closing time
of the tavern. One of
the brothers was
stabbed and when the
other tried to
intervene and assist
actions but then
admitted it when the
OPINION
Pa n d o r a ’s
box of
p r ote s t s
SOUTH Africans are getting fed up with the
#feesmustfall protestors on university
campuses.
Any moral high ground these students
once had was abandoned long ago when
they started disrupting classes, harassing
and intimidating lecturers and fellow
students who wanted to study, destroying
property, looting and burning buildings.
It rings hollow when students claim their
protests have been “c o n st i t u t i o n a l ” and
“peaceful”, when everyone around can see
what they have been doing. Likewise the
claims of police overreaction and brutality
in response to their provocation.
We have seen with our own eyes the
footage of students throwing rocks and
bottles at police at Wits University, of
rampant looting at Fort Hare University, of
the burnt-out library at the University of
K wa Z u l u - N at a l .
Early in the protests, a cellphone video
was released showing how student
protestors at the University of the North
West manhandled a female lecturer after
disrupting her class. The lecturer had asked
her class if they wanted to continue with
the lecture or listen to the rants of the
protestors. The class full of students replied
they wanted to study and the thugs did not
like that, so they grabbed the lecturer and
dragged her out of the classroom.
And last week, it appears protesting
students caused the death of a security
guard at Wits University when they
released a fire extinguisher. Minister of
Higher Education Blade Nzimande has
called for an investigation into the man’s
death, and expressed shock that the
university administration failed to report
the incident.
Nzimande has not covered himself in
glory for how he has handled these
protests from the beginning, but his
statement following the security guard’s
death is a step in the right direction.
He said: “This incident, painful as it is, is
proof that there are people who are hell
bent on holding our universities to ransom
and have no regard for the vast majority of
law-abiding members of the university
community who do not want to participate
in protests.
“This majority sector highly values the
integrity of the academic programme and
has shown an understanding of and
appreciation for the lengths to which
government has gone in support for the
poor, middle class and missing middle
students in the recent fee adjustment
announcement.”
The Rhodes protestors have been no
angels either, with their constant
disruptions of lectures, intimidating other
students, destruction of property and
taunting and obstructing the police.
Pa n d o r a ’s horrors were released when
university administrations and government
first caved in to students’ demands last
year. Now there seems to be no putting
them back in the box.
Rosehill Mall must do more
SHOPPING at Rosehill Mall on
Wednesday September 28,
turned into a nightmare when
my bakkie was broken into in
front of the Spur entrance.
Security was nowhere to be
seen and security cameras
were out of order (and had
been down for some time as
another incident had occurred
the previous week).
The police arrived promptly
and were most professional
and efficient. Sergeant Smit
went beyond her duty to help
me. This turned into an
attempted theft of my bakkie.
I then had to call Kowie
Locksmith as my door locks
and vehicle ignition had been
damaged. They were very
efficient and sympathetic to
my plight and soon had me
back on the road. Another
good was the licensing office:
in and out in 15 minutes.
Besides all the groceries and
personal items that were
stolen and all the damage to
my vehicle, I feel this could
have been avoided if the
Rosehill Mall management –
knowing fully well that their
security cameras were not
functioning – had supplied
extra security in the parking
area. It is t h at time of year
when crime is high so we need
to protect residents and
visitors, especially as the
festive season approaches.
DAWN EWING
It seems you can do what you like
ONE of your articles, ‘Protect indigenous trees
– or else’ [September 15]. My question is: or
else what?
It would seem in Port Alfred you can do
what you like. You put up fences across the
towpath, you threaten a person with a gun
skiing off the riverbank, you paint red lines in
front of your house. You pull down old houses
and cut down milkwood trees and get a
warning and, a few weeks later you remove
the stumps so that it will not show. You then
plant grass in the river to stop prawns
breeding.
It would seem that we can go ahead and do
what we please and no action will be taken.
In future I will build what I want, paint red
lines and place white rocks in front of my
house and cut down trees on municipal
proper t y.
Talk of the Town 7
Question: Tell us about
your job.
Answer: I am currently a
senior lecturer at Stenden
and my favourite subject
to teach is accounting. I
also lecture marketing and
revenue management and
I coordinate minor courses
in social entrepreneurship
and lodge management.
Q: What made you get
into that line of work?
A: I originally studied
hospitality and then did a
fourth year in
management. After doing
part-time work for the
Cape Town Hotel School, I
realised I had a passion for
education and decided to
pursue a career in
education and hospitality
combined.
Q: Describe the most
memorable experience
you have had in your line
of work?
A: Writing “l at e ” on a
st u d e n t ’s forehead with my
board marker.
I think Fifa 2010 was
pretty memorable as well.
The students were
working in the VIP boxes
and we had to leave Port
Alfred at 4am on match
days just to get them to
the stadium on time.
Getting about 100 students
onto buses at that time of
the day is no easy feat.
Q: What do you do to
unwind when you are not
working?
A: I like to exercise
(gym/swimming/cycling/
running) or have a cold
beer/glass of wine close to
the beach or river.
FA C E 2FA C E
... with Megan Walwyn
Q: What is your motto
in life?
A: Live today.
Q: What makes you
happy?
A: A sunny day at the
beach. Simple.
Q: What makes you
angr y?
A: People who look for
reasons to complain. I
think it’s best to try and
see the good in everyone
and enjoy life as much as
possible. Why can’t
everyone just get along?
Q: What do you think
about the youth of South
Africa? Do you have any
advice for them?
A: I think they are
independent and
confident, which can be a
great thing. I wish I had
had more confidence in
my teenage years. My
advice: Get your nose out
of your mobile phone and
go for a walk outside.
There is so much more to
life than selfies and X-Box.
Q: What do you like
most about Port Alfred?
A: The size (love small
towns), the river, the beach
and laid-back surf culture.
Q: If you could change
one thing about Port
Alfred ...
A: The ruling party. I’m a
proud DA supporter.
Q: What is your
favourite music of all
t i m e?
A: The theme song from
the movie, Cider House
Rules.
Q: Who would you like
to take with you on The
Amazing Race, given the
oppor tunity?
A: My brother, my
boyfriend and my
boyfriend’s best friend.
They’re all fit, competitive
and entertaining. PS. Can I
take my Jack Russels?
Q: Three wishes for
South Africa ...
A: It starts with
education. We need better
schools to educate
children about family
planning, life and how to
keep our planet safe.
I hope one day we will
see a reduced crime rate
and I’d like to see abused
women given the chance
to feel empowered in
business and the
BUSINESSFORUM
The stormy seas
of retirement
GOING on retirement is very similar to getting into
a two-man yacht and setting sail for the unknown
open seas with your loved one by your side.
You are certain to enter a very rough experience
as the stormy seas of equity markets and interest
rate volatility will be pounding your retirement
yacht from all sides.
Most of us spend 40 to
45 years of our lives
working hard while trying
to save to ensure a
comfortable retirement by
being part of the company
retirement fund and even
starting a retirement
annuity savings plan to
complement retirement funds.
Unfortunately an enormous percentage of our
fellow South Africans do not have a clue what
their needs may be during their years of
retirement. How does one plan retirement if you
don’t know how to go about it?
I have done my best to bring across the
message on several occasions that one actually
needs to consult with a qualified, experienced
financial advisor to assist with the forward
planning and calculations. A full retirement
planning process most certainly takes long hours
of planning and involves lots of complex
calculations to provide for a trouble-free
retirement period.
Statistics show that only
six out of every 100 people
currently make a d e q u at e
provision for their retirement
years. I can assure you that
except for the wealthy or the
ones who inherited millions,
the balance of the 6%, are
the ones who made
sufficient and timely use of the services of
qualified, experienced financial advisors.
The day you board your retirement yacht, you
are really faced with the unknown. So, to try and
navigate your own retirement direction, you most
certainly need to have a completely different
survival strategy.
During the post-retirement years, you will really
need to have a lot more than a life jacket.
Yes, a financial advisor is certain to charge for
his knowledge, experience and expert advice. But
the actual amount is sure to be returned to you
many times over.
In today’s volatile markets, one just cannot risk
one’s total retirement savings being swallowed up
by inflation or the volatility of the rand.
If you have been watching the markets, you will
have noticed the dangerous sliding value of the
rand against foreign currencies.
Only a few years ago the rand was still valued
at about R6 to the US dollar. Currently, it has slid
right down to R13 and even more to the dollar.
Every time some uneducated politician makes an
ignorant statement, the foreign investors grab
their millions and run to safer havens.
To prevent your retirement yacht from getting
wrecked on the rocks, don’t be too proud to ask
for help.
We are awaiting your distress call to enable us
to assist you with expert retirement planning and
advice. Contact us on one of the following
BRAVE BEGINNINGS: New Stenden student
New students
get to hear
about Stenden
LOUISE KNOWLES
DEAN of students, Dr Wouter Hensens,
welcomed new students and their families and
gave a brief history and overview of the campus
at Stenden South Africa’s open day on Saturday.
The campus was previously the Grand Hotel
(since 1890), which was acquired by former
councillor Louise Swanepoel and her partner
John Hughes.
In 2000, they travelled to Europe and spoke
to Stenden University (formerly Christelijke
Hogeschool Nederland) about campus sites on
each continent, where students could travel and
study. They convinced Stenden to start a
campus in Port Alfred.
Stenden (then called the Educational Institute
for Service Studies) opened in 2002 with eight
students; today there are 350.
It also has between 50 to 150 exchange
students who do an 18-week special course
related to the local environment, such as
wildlife, social entrepreneurship and wine
st u d i e s .
“Port Alfred out-performs other Stenden
campuses for staff satisfaction, student
satisfaction, pass rate and employment
af terwards,” Hensens said.
He said key initial indicators were measured
every four weeks when the student
representative council (SRC) visited classes to
get “tips and tops”, which saw the departments
make changes based on the students’
r e c o m m e n d at i o n s .
There are also 20 to 25 students per class,
compared to public universities which have
between 30 to 50.
In addition, all the other campus sites at
Qatar, Thailand, Bali and the Netherlands, have
the same international curriculum. All that
students need is an air ticket to go and study at
another campus site.
Hensens said problem-based learning from
the late 1960s was used, based on real-world
demands like selling ideas, working together
and solving problems.
Real-world learning takes place at the
boutique hotel, MyPond, “the best four-star
hotel in the Eastern Cape”, Hensens said.
A group of investors used to run it, but
Stenden offered to run it with their own
st u d e n t s .
Students can also study d i s a st e r
management, which involves working with
municipalities and going on excursions.
Stenden is currently furnishing a disaster
control centre, with six screens and direct
internet for simulations and real-life use.
Both BCom degrees involve starting at the
bottom with basic skills in first year, training
and supervising first year students in second
year, and choosing a department to specialise
in third year.
In their final year, students do a 21-week
internship or an entire fourth year in disaster
management. Hensens said some 80% of
students received job offers then, and with a
career pass, did not need to write exams.
He said half of the students had bursaries
and most lived on or around campus. There are
no day students.
Students are together 24-hours and make
their own plans for entertainment and sports,
organised mostly by the SRC, which meets with
the dean every two weeks.
It is an alcohol-free campus, since a Stenden
student died of alcohol poisoning at his
birthday party. Possession of drugs involves
immediate suspension.
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
THIS weekend sees a host of sporting
events taking place from Cannon Rocks
to the Fish River. Starting today
(Thursday) and running through until
Saturday, is the Cannon Rocks
Kiteboarding Classic. This annual event
is perfectly suited to our autumn windy
conditions, and the sight of tens of
kiteboarders in the air and on the water
is truly one to be witnessed. Also
running from today until Sunday, for
those who enjoy the martial arts, the
WUKF Africa Invitational and SASKA
National Championships will take place
at the Fish River Sun Hotel. Then, on
Saturday, runners will take part in the
Buco Kowie Striders 10/27km race. The
brave boys and girls tackling the 27km
race will start at the Big Pineapple in
Bathurst, while the less ambitious (or
more sensible) runners will begin at the
Port Alfred Country Club, where both
races finish. All this as well as schools
and local rugby/soccer/netball matches
in the area means it should be an
excellent sporting weekend for all.
AN on-going concern is the violence
witnessed at our tertiary educational
institutions, where #FeesMustFall
protestors have engaged with police
and private security forces to demand
free education for all. In scenes
reminiscent of South Africa in the
1980s, we see people scattering as
police fire tear gas canisters, stun
grenades and rubber bullets into
crowds of protestors.
And, more akin to the 1960s, we see
students placing flowers into the barrels
of police guns as a way of showing that
the protestors themselves are merely
exercising their democratic right to
p r ot e st .
But this is not the whole story. Cer tain
groups are determined to disrupt and
destroy the established universities by
any means, including looting, burning
and violence. Their call for the
de-colonisation of universities appears
is it not the democratic right of all
With the parliamentary hearings
the discredited and former chief
THE price of Brent crude has steadily
risen over the last few days, and is
currently over the $50 a barrel mark
while, at the same time, the British
pound has slumped to a 31-year low
against the US dollar. The markets are
quite volatile at the moment and this is
both good and bad news for South
Africa. The low value of the pound is
good for imports (it costs almost 20%
less rands than six months ago), but
not good for exports. At the time of
going to press, the rand was trading at
R13.73 to the dollar (R13.46), R17.48 to
the pound (R20.59) and R15.40 to the
Euro (R15.12). Gold was trading at
$1 272.71 ($1147.03), Platinum at
$995.00 ($992.50) and Brent crude oil
at $51.31 ($52.86).
Jewish minister tells
of testimony to CMA
Rejected for believing in Jesus
LOUISE KNOWLES
THE Christians Men’s Association (CMA), which
celebrated its 30th anniversary breakfast last
Saturday, is not just for men.
It started as an association for Christian
businessmen in the 1980s, but grew to include
women and people of all races.
Members of the CMA packed the Port Alfred
Celebration Centre at the Lodge on Saturday to
hear Jewish Presbyterian minister Lihai Baruch
Bercovich speak about his conversion to
Christianit y.
“Not a very Scottish name, but I’m a
Presbyterian and a minister nog al,” said
Bercovich, who is the minister of St Columbas
Church in Komani.
Disowned by his father when he told him that
he believed in Jesus, and declared dead to the
congregation of the synagogue where he had
once had his Barmitzvah, Bercovich converted
his father on his deathbed.
Bercovich shared of how he had not had a
good relationship with his father, who was
sporty and physical, whereas he was not,
having been born with muscular dystrophy.
Born in Beer Sheva in southern Israel in 1970,
Bercovich came to South Africa in 1982 when
his father, an engineer, got a job at the new
power plant in Sasolburg.
He attended Greenside High School and was
head of the Student Jewish Association. One
day, the head of the Student Christian
Association suggested they do something
together. But what?
“When two or more Christians get together
they will play volleyball,” Bercovich said to
l a u g h t e r.
Every time the Christians scored, they would
do a little Jehovah jive, treating Jesus as if he
was alive – and he decided they were real
mashuganas (crazies).
Later, he joined the Israeli Defence Force and
tried to become a fighter pilot to live up to his
fat h e r ’s expectations, but he was rejected,
which led to him feeling suicidal.
Standing on a hill overlooking the
Mediterranean sea, he called out to God and
asked him for an intimate relationship such as
he had witnessed his former Christian peers at
school had enjoyed – something more than just
rules and regulations.
“It takes a Jew to bargain with God,”
Bercovich quipped.
Back in South Africa, working with his father,
he got a call from his old friend in the Student
Christian Association. He went with her to their
old hangout, the White Horse Inn, where he
asked her to tell him about Jesus.
“Another funny thing about Christians, apart
from volleyball, is that they always want you to
read a lot of books,” said Bercovich.
But he read a book called Bet rayed, which
was written by an Orthodox Jew whose
KOMANI MINISTER: Presbyterian minister, Lihai
Baruch Bercovich, speaking at the breakfast
celebrating the 30th anniversary of the
Christian Men’s Association at the Lodge on
Saturday
Picture: LOUISE KNOWLES
daughter converted to Christianity. The author
wrote the book to disprove his daughter, but
was converted himself.
Reading the Old Testament in the original
Hebrew, Bercovich found references to a virgin
birth of a prophet called Immanuel. But he
hesitated to go into an actual church.
He agreed to go with his old friend on
condition there was an easy exit. They went to
the Linden Presbyterian Church, where the
minister wore no collar, and the people were
normal, trendy and diverse, there were
instruments on stage and a worship team.
But he began to feel uncomfortable because
Jews were the ones who called “crucify Him” in
the Bible, and he asked God to make him feel
more comfortable.
Just then, a woman who had been praying for
her son began singing in Hebrew although she
could not speak a word of it. God had answered
his prayer.
He started reading the New Testament and
realised most of the writers were Jewish.
“This book was kosher,” he laughed.
Finally, he was baptised in the Holy Spirit and
he told his parents he believed in Jesus.
His father banged the table. “No son of mine
believes in Jesus. Get out!” he said.
Five years passed before Bercovich saw his
father again. In that time, he had become a
candidate in the Presbyterian Church and was a
probationer in Durban.
He then received a call from his mother, who
told him his father was dying from cancer.
He then went home and in those last two
weeks, he and his father became very close.
On his father’s deathbed, Bercovich asked if
he could pray to Jesus, and if it was okay that
he should squeeze his hand – which he did.
Joyous move for church
THE Nuwe Lewe Volle
Evangelie Kerk (VEK), which
began in a double garage
four-and-a-half years ago,
celebrated moving into their
new premises on Saturday.
After a few months, the
venue became too small and
so the congregation moved to
the Honeycomb Centre in
Albany Road.
After a further four years,
the growth of the congregation
necessitated another move to
a bigger venue.
The building right next door,
in the Honeycomb Centre
became vacant, and so the
hard work began.
The premises, where iHire
used to be, has now been
transformed into a beautiful
place of worship.
The facilities now include a
church auditorium, prayer
room, junior church
classrooms, a kitchen and
bathroom facilities.
The official opening and
dedication of the new venue
took place on Saturday,
October 1, at 2pm.
PAHS 2016 Matric Dance
HAPPY SMILEY PEOPLE: Tali Alexandre escorted
Matthew White to the PAHS matric dance
IT was an evening of stunning dresses, elegant
suits and beautiful decorations last Thursday
when Grade 12 students donned their finery and
attended this year’s Port Alfred High School
Matric Dance. It all began with a
police-escorted motorcade from the civic centre
to the school, and then a long walk down the
red carpet to the school entrance, with
hundreds of fellow students, parents and other
supporters screaming and applauding for their
friends. Then, inside the school hall, stunningly
draped in red, white and black, the pupils and
their partners enjoyed a delicious meal and
danced until the early hours. ROB KNOWLES
took the pictures.
ELEGANT EVENING: Nomaxabisi Tokwe, left, and
Dondolo Manona enjoyed their evening at the
matric dance
ALL SMILES: Sinesipho Mfo, left, escorted his
date for the evening at the PAHS matric dance,
Hlumlo Fumba
CHIQUE AND SASSY: Nathan Muir and his
partner Chantelle du Randt were happy to be at
the PAHS matric dance
AN EVENING TO REMEMBER: Ayanda Mtatana,
left, and Falakhe Budaza settled in for the
e ve n i n g
LOOKING GOOD: Duncan Venters partnered with
said they were looking forward to a great
e ve n i n g
DRIVING MISS CASSIDY: Andrew Nell and his
date for the evening, Cassidy van Rensburg,
arrived at the school in style, driving a
Mercedes SLK 250
HIGH RIDERS: From
left, Sam Solz was the
Cameron Reeder, and Josh Ehrke was with Megan Kelbrick

IN THE JUNGLE: Regional
Magnificent Seven
LOUISE KNOWLES
The Magnificent
Seven, with Denzel
Washington, Chris
Pratt, Vincent
D’Onofrio, Ethan
Hawke, Peter
Sarsgaard and Haley
Bennett. Directed by
Antoine Fuqua. 3/5
THIS remake of the
Yul Brynner classic
features seven
desperadoes of
diversity: black bounty
hunter Sam Chisolm
(Denzel Washington),
cardsharp Joshua
Faraday (Chris Pratt),
Asian knife expert Billy
Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee),
mountain man Jack
Horne (Vincent
Cubs sing round world in
D’Onofrio), Confederate
veteran and sharpshooter
Goodnight
Robicheaux (Ethan
Hawke), Comanche
loner Red Harvest
(Martin Sensmeier) and
good-natured Mexican
outlaw Vasquez
(Manuel Garcia-Rulfo).
The villain of the
movie is another stock
character, the greedy
gold-mining magnate
Bartholomew Bogue
(Peter Sarsgaard) who
oppresses the good and
God-fearing people of
Rose Creek with his
land-grabbing and
murder. Bogue has an
army of henchmen to
do his bidding and has
the sheriff in his pocket.
TO CELEBRATE the 100th anniversary of the
cubs, akela Dot Fetherstonhaugh and her
troops of meerkats, wolf cubs, girl guides
and scouts celebrated on Saturday with a
“round the world in 100 minutes” variet y
concer t.
Highlights from the concert
included The Hills are Alive
(Switzerland), sung by Jamie
Webber, with Lorna Els on the piano.
There was also a sing-along with
master of ceremonies Rob Knowles and
the audience singing When Irish Eyes are
Smiling, Waltzing Matilda (Australia), Lily
Marlene (Germany) and Sarie Marais.
Knowles promised to buy pancakes for
the audience if they sang louder, but after
singing When Irish Eyes are Smiling, he
said “sing louder next time”.
Af ter Waltzing Matilda he said “much
bet ter”, but then resorted to threats to fine
the audience R100 on the way out if they
did not sing well enough.
The first Port Alfred cubs, scouts and
meerkats also acted in a play about the
Indian brave, Running Bear (Canada).
Regional commissioner for the scouts,
Martin de Bruyn aka “Scot tie”, came from
Port Elizabeth to speak at the concert at
Port Alfred High School on Saturday and
presented Dot Fetherstonhaugh with a
MOVIEREVIEWS
What’s hot or not at the box office
NOTHING TO LOSE: Making up the Magnificent Seven are, from left, Jack
Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier), Vasquez
(Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Sam
Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Joshua Faraday (Chris Pratt) and Billy
Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee)
But his corruption,
which parallels the
corruption in society
today, is to be
shor t-lived.
The movie opens in
the town church where
the people have
gathered to discuss
their problems. In walks
Bogue with two heavily
armed, tobaccochewing
henchmen.
Bogue makes them an
offer – either sell their
land to him cheaply or
suffer the
consequences. A young
man who speaks out is
shot and Bogue orders
his men to set fire to
the church.
The victim’s wife,
certificate of appreciation. De Bruyn said it
was wonderful to see the scouts movement
was popular in Port Alfred.
Knowles said scout and cubs founder
Lord Robert Baden-Powell was born in 1857
and was stationed in South Africa during
the Anglo-Boer War at the Siege of
M a f i ke n g .
At the time, he wrote a training manual
called Aids to Scouting. On his return to
the UK in 1903, it had become a best-seller.
In 1907, the first scout camp was held in
England for boys between the ages of 11
and 18.
In 1916, he published his outline of wolf
cubbing for seven to 11 year-olds. A wolf
was one of the ranks given by certain
Native American tribes to their best scouts.
Baden-Powell also asked his friend,
author Rudyard Kipling, if he could make
use of characters from his Jungle Book
story. Hence the meerkats (aged five to
seven), which precede the cubs.
After World War 2, he was in South
Africa for two weeks and piano player
Lorna Els actually met Mrs Baden-Powell in
Bedford in 1955 when she was a girl guide
and served her tea.
Although cub scouts was founded with
military tones, the intention was to create
camaraderie, Els said.
Emma Cullen (Haley
Bennett) rides to the
next town to get help
and after witnessing the
gun-slinging prowess of
bounty hunter Sam
Chisolm, appeals to him
to help her townsfolk.
Chisolm agrees when
he hears the name
Bogue. We later learn
the back story.
In a classic line from
the movie, Chisolm asks
Cullen, “So you seek
revenge?” She replies:
“I seek righteousness,
but I’ll take revenge.”
Knowing they face an
army of baddies,
Chisolm recruits seven
misfits with the skills
needed, starting with

the gambler and ladies’
man Faraday, who has
his own spot of bother
with men who felt
cheated. Among the
recruits, Robicheaux is
a friend from Chisolm’s
past, and others, like
Jack Horne, are
legendary manhunters.
While Bogue is away
on business the misfit
seven turn out the
sheriff and set about
fortifying the town in
preparation for the
battle to come. Each
man has his own
reasons for joining this
cause, but their
desperate bid against a
superior force is what
makes them
magnificent in the end.
The movie is a
remake of the 1960
western starring Yul
Brynner, Steve
McQueen, Charles
Bronson and James
Coburn, which in turn
was based on a
Japanese movie, Seven
Samurai (1954).
There are some good
lines and some good
old-fashioned ethics.
The moral of the story is
that even today
individuality trumps
conformit y.

A RATHER SPECIAL SPEAKER FOR LUNCH
Zelda la Grange, former private secretary and
personal assistant to President Nelson Mandela,
will be guest speaker at the annual breast cancer
awareness lunch at The Wyvern on Monday. Now a
much-in-demand inspirational speaker, La Grange
spent 19 years as presidential aide in different
capacities, and will no doubt have many an
anecdote and story to share with her audience. She
has authored the book Good Morning, Mr Mandela,
and was a founding staff member of the Nelson
Mandela Foundation.
Event promoter Cathy Braans said the venue had
capacity for 170 seats, and tickets were selling very
well. She said the lunch was previously held as a
breakfast, and the first one was held in 2009. Past
guest speakers have included Alison, Wilma van
der Bijl, Joy Duffield and Danel Pruissen.
UPDATE FROM CAMPUS
An update from Rhodes University issued on
Sunday stated that the university was aware that
staff and students might be feeling insecure about
returning to campus (on Monday) following the
arson attempt over the weekend. Staff and
students were reassured that further precautions
had been put in place to ensure their safety, and
they were requested to continue to support each
WEEKLY NEWS FROM GRAHAMSTOWN
Last week’s edition of Talk of the Town gave
readers good value for money, what with
32 pages of good reading, and some
“histor y’ thrown in as well. Then, in some
areas, readers received two newspapers for
the price of one – The Herald and Talk of
the Town! The ToTT pages contained
comments and anecdotes from staff
members and columnists past and present,
writing about their association with the
newspaper over the past 20 years. Here’s
my story.
After taking early retirement from
Grahamstown Municipality in 1996, I joined
the staff of Grocott’s Mail as deputy editor,
later becoming editor and staying there
until 2005 when the new owners
restructured the staff make-up.
My association with Johnnic began in
2005 when, upon leaving Grocott’s Mail,
group editor of Johnnic community
newspapers, Cal Seton-Smith, offered me
the position of editor of the newly-launched
Grahamstown This Week, which I gladly
accepted. The free community newspaper
proved very popular locally, but after four
years Johnnic closed several community
papers within the group, and ‘GTW’ wa s
one of them.
Again, it was Cal Seton-Smith who arranged for
me to write a weekly full-page Grahamstown
column in Talk of the Town after talks with ToTT
management, and here I am, seven years later and
not having missed a column in that time. In fact,
this year marked my 36th year in the wonderful
and wacky world of journalism, both part-time and
fulltime.
Accordingly, I thank Mauneen Charter and Jon
Houzet for their co-operation and cordiality over the
years, Cal Seton-Smith (since retired) for the part
he played in my being part of Talk of the Town, and
the readers of ToTT, particularly those in
GIVING RED
Each month staff members of the SA National
Blood Service based in Port Elizabeth visit
Grahamstown to collect units of the life-saving fluid
from local donors. Their next visit is on Tuesday,
October 11 when they will be at the NG Kerk hall at
the corner of Hill and Beaufort Streets from 1pm to
6pm. Meanwhile, SANBS is concerned that its
blood stocks have dwindled to two days’ s u p p l y.
A BLOOMING GOOD SHOW BECKONS
Tucked away in homes and gardens this week have
been the plants, shrubs and flowers that will be
entered in the many sections of Saturday’s
Grahamstown Flower Show at Oatlands Prep.
Chairperson of the Albany Horticultural & Lilium
Society, Marion Jayes, is convenor of the show. She
says that besides the adult competitions, there are
also competitions for primary school children, and
garden-related stalls and food stalls. Gates open at
10am, the competition halls will open after judging
at 11am, and the prize-giving is due to begin at
3pm. Tomorrow afternoon and Saturday morning
will see the entrants in the children’s competition
putting together their entries in boxes at Oatlands.
Their task is to come up with prize-winning
arrangements.
DIRTY, DIRTIER, DIRTIEST
I was horrified and shocked the other day to see
the state of the pavements and gutters of Cloncore
Street and Victoria Road across the road from the
former shunting yards at the rear of the local
railway station. Really, the state of the area has to
be seen to be believed – it was an unbelievable
mess when I visited the area early last week. There
was litter, garbage, cardboard boxes, paper, metal
parts and domestic rubbish all over the place. I am
surprised businesses in the area have not
mobilised staff and done a clean-up. When I was in
the area last week, vehicles were even being
repaired in the street. The last time I saw
MODERN ART: A visitor to the Johan Carinus Art Centre
admires the colourful and quirky painting by Oyisa Katshaza,
Grade 11 pupil at Graeme College, during the centre’s recent
exhibition. Scores of works of arts in various forms were part
of the exhibition by local school pupils
something like this was a few years ago when I
drove through Butterworth in the former Transkei.
GRAEME WINS IN SOUTHERN SUBURBS
Graeme College enjoyed a comfortable 160-run
victory over Westerford High School in their first
team 50-overs cricket match in Newlands, Cape
Town, on Saturday, with four visiting batsmen
putting in some fine innings. Summarised scores:
Graeme 284/6 Richard Beyleveld 54, Nicholas
Zimmerman 54, Mark Amm 42 not out, Chris
Gleaves 48). Westerford 123 all out (R Beyleveld
3/29, Dampies 2/8, Amm 2/58). Graeme won by
160 runs, then followed it up the next day with T20
wins over Bergvliet High (by nine wickets) and
Pinelands High (by three wickets).
FLYING IN FOR REUNION
Dr Viv Gibson, president of Albany Rugby Football
Club in the ’80s, has confirmed that he and his wife
chiropractor by profession when he lived in
Grahamstown, Gibson was also president of the
Lions Club of Grahamstown in the ’80s.
BIRTHDAY SMILES: Shoppers to Pepper Grove Pick n Pay last Thursday morning were greeted with
games, face-painting, go-kart races and
fo o d .
FOOTBALL ON ST AIDAN’S
Football – known as soccer to some – is
alive and kicking at St Andrew’s College, and the
school hosted the Heritage Day tournament on St
Aidan’s field a fortnight ago. The event was
contested by Woodridge College, Lawson Brown
High, Nombulelo High and St Andrew’s. A week
earlier saw St Andrew’s fielding four teams against
Victoria Park High in Port Elizabeth, and last
weekend St Andrew’s took part in a tournament
hosted by Grey College in Bloemfontein. The St
Andrew’s coach is Craig Hatches.
This reminds me of the very first football match I
refereed at the beginning of a 20-year refereeing
career in Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth. It was a
friendly match involving a Grahamstown City Xl
and St Andrew’s College in 1975, and was played
on the Fort England Hospital ground in Sunnyside,
since taken over by ward complexes. But the
original change room is still there, utilised these
days as storerooms. I believe.
HONOURS ALL-ROUND
The Diocesan School for Girls has made cultural
and sporting honours awards to the following
pupils: Wandithanda Makandula (chorister and
soloist), Tegan van der Merwe (pianist), Lenta
Cullinan (hockey), Sandisiwe Tabata (hockey),
Emma Koster (netball) and Hannah Rippon
(netball). Cullinan, captain of the DSG first hockey,
tennis and squash teams, also has colours for
tennis and squash.
EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE
Walking along Hillsview Road extension leading to
the veterinary research station at the top of George
Street, I noticed that concerted attempts are being
made to repair the donga-riddled section between
the tar and the vet station. However, I doubt it is
the municipality doing this great job, and think it is
probably a concerned building contractor filling the
dongas with builders’ rubble. Only thing that spoils
the area is the indiscriminate dumping of garden
refuse alongside and even on the gravel road. Once
upon a time this section of road was tarred.
THEY WERE HERE BACK THEN
These days we have many major insurance
companies whose ranks include OUTsurance, King
Price Insurance, Auto & General Insurance,
Sanlam, Discovery Insure and Old Mutual to insure
our lives and our property. Back in the 1960s there
was an insurance company agency at almost every
at torney’s office, estate agent’s office and travel
agency in town. Maybe some readers have never
even heard of some of these insurance companies
from the ’60s, and some of which probably do not
exist anymore. Parity Insurance, Eagle Star
Insurance, Prudential Insurance and Rotterdam
Insurance, all at Tom Tits Travel Agents, 76 High
Street; Century Insurance and Sun Life Assurance
of Canada at HG Levey Attorneys, 111 High Street;
London Assurance at Digby & Francis Estates, 79
High Street; North British & Mercantile Insurance
at Grahamstown Building Society, 18 Hill Street;
South British Insurance at AR Whiteley
Accountants, 69 High Street; and Commercial
Union Assurance at EP Guardian Loan &
Investment, 103 High Street.
A LANE OF CLOTHING
A few decades ago, Hepworths men’s outfitters,
tailors, suppliers of hats and boots and stockists of
academic and college wear, occupied premises on
the southern side of Church Square, where Pep
Stores is today. Hepworths then closed shop and
left town, but the lane between Clicks and Pep is
still known as Hepworths Lane. It was known as
Hepworths Lane back in the mid-60s when Bertie
Thomas Liddiard occupied premises halfway down
the lane.
COUNTRY SERVICE
Those readers and residents with connections to
Salem and its district are invited to a special
service from 8.30am on Sunday October 9 in the
1850 Salem Church. The service will be conducted
by Rev Rod Burton and Rev Glen Craig.
ACROSS THE WORLD
Here’s some more news of former Grahamstonians
following my request in last week’s column. Twins
David and Bradley Springer had an eventful month
in September this year. Bradley Springer took part
in the 70.3 Half Ironman world champs in
Mooloolabar in Australia, finishing in the top 20%
of the field of 3000 athletes. David Springer
graduated with a DPhil in biomedical engineering
from Oxford University.
Kenton-on-Sea Bowling
Club
LAST Wednesday, our women
took on the Port Alfred Bowling
Club ladies in the bi-monthly
Doris Ford competition.
The event was actually the
August leg of the competition,
which was postponed due to the
heatwave we experienced at the
end of August.
It was evident that the Port
Alfred ladies had recovered
faster from the heat exhaustion
than our ladies, as they won this
leg by two matches to one.
They also lead in the year-todate
standing and with one more
leg to go, are assured of winning
the annual Doris Ford trophy.
On Thursday, our six teams
travelled to Kowie Bowling Club
for the President’s Chair
competition. This is a fun
competition with mixed teams
made up by the club captains.
Our club’s president will have
to remain standing as Kowie
retained the colourful President’s
Chair. They narrowly beat us with
three matches, won by both
sides. Kowie managed an overall
shot profit of eight in the six
matches and that ensured that
their president can continue to
enjoy his tea sitting down.
Friday was draw night. The
weekly attendance draw was
held just after 6pm.
Stuart Clarkson’s number was
Top athletes pumped for SA’s favourite event
FROM today until
Saturday, South
Africa’s top
kiteboarding athletes
will be taking part in
what promises to be
another cracker
edition of the Cannon
Rocks Kiteboarding
Classic.
Over the years,
scenic Cannon Rocks
has made a name for
itself by providing
kiteboarders with
world-class
conditions.
Nestled on the
Sunshine Coast, it
has much to offer for
kiteboarders of all
drawn, but as he wasn’t present,
he missed out on the R1200
jackpot! Reminder: The
attendance draw can be held at
any time between 6pm and 7pm
on a Friday night.
The Club100 draw was won by
Felicia Wolf, with runner-up
Pippa Swift collecting the
second prize of R140.
Ivor Rule won the Club100
attendance prize, which was
worth R200, with all the carryovers
from previous months.
Finally, our usual Whiskey
Draw compère, Dave West, was
absent but was rewarded by
having his number drawn and
winning this week’s whiskey.
Saturday was Social Saturday.
The greens had been aerated
during the week and that caused
some “crazy” bowls.
However, it was an enjoyable
afternoon and our club will enjoy
the benefits of the revitalised
greens in the weeks to come.
This month’s prize was
sponsored by Preston’s Bottle
Store and the winners each
walked away with a R100 gift
voucher and a pen.
It was an afternoon for the
ladies as Ruth Low’s team were
the victors, with Di Gruneberg’s
team running a close second.
Cedric Vandenschrik
said.
The contest, which
is now in its sixth
edition, has grown
over the years to
have more of a
“fe st i va l ” feel, with
everyone making the
The contest gives
South African
The Doris Ford was played on
Wednesday, September 28, and
we won two games and lost one
game by one shot. Well played!
The Tommy and Rita Browne
Trophy was hotly contested last
Saturday, with 22 teams of trips
taking part.
Mufti and music was the order
of the day and three rounds of
bowls were played.
Apart from a delay between
the first and second round, all
went well and fun was had by
all.
First was David Freeme and
his team, second was Lionel
Howar th’s team, third was Noel
Heale’s team and fourth was
Neill de Villiers’s team.
Thank you so much to our
sponsors, who have graciously
announced they will sponsor the
tournament again next year.
The second round of the
Ladies Senior Singles rounds
three and four were to be played
“It also allows the
pros to show off their
best in the best
conditions,”
Vandenschrik said.
The festivities don’t
stop on the beach.
With great support
various provinces in
Our runner-up was Keith
beat Siggie Rohrs’s team of
Thursday we played our
second round of the President’s
Chair Competition, which is
competed for between Kenton
and Kowie Clubs.
The trophy is a Bentwood
kitchen chair that has been
brightly painted with the Kowie
Club lighthouse pictured on the
s e at .
The contest is between six
mixed teams from each club and
is open to all members.
What a contest it turned out to
be, with each club winning three
games, and Kowie had the
positive shot profit six points
/+8.
Lionel Howarth and his team
were in fine form to take a full
house eight off one of our teams.
We did have an overflow of
tabs bowlers on the day who
played on the B green but I did
not receive any cards for that
and there was no competition for
tabs.
On Saturday, five Kowie trips
teams went to the Port Alfred
Club to participate in the Tommy
Browne mixed trips competition.
UPSIDE DOWN: Mike
Engelbrecht, from Port
spectacular manoeuvre at
last year’s Cannon Rocks
Kiteboarding Classic
They could have ordered
better weather for the day – but
we all had a great day.
It was all played over short
games, of which we played three
in the day, and only had entries
from Kenton, Kowie and De
We t ’s Dorp Club.
Well done to Tommy and Rita
for not only sponsoring the
competition but also coming to
Port Alfred for the week and
playing in the competition.
The winner was Port Alfred’s
David Freeme’s team, with
second place to Lionel Howarth’s
and third to Noel Heale’s.
Kowie’s best-placed team, in
fifth spot, was Mike Tomlinson’s
team of Jackie Kriel and Robert
Wa l ke r.
On Saturday, we also had tabs
bowls at home for those who
were not involved in the PA
competition, and I am very
pleased to report that EP
president, Brian Buchanon, and
his wife Moira, played with our
guys on the day.
There was no competition and
a Snowball was done with No2
being drawn for the four ends.
Lee Botma’s team of Basil
sponsored by Viv Jordan.
FRESH STOP PORT ALFRED
MIXED
October 1:
Once again, cold westerlies
pervaded the course, keeping
players well wrapped up.
A total of 21 players were
drawn into three mixed threeballs
and four mixed fourballs,
to play the usual twoto-count
stableford alliance.
The “bachelor” team of
Tim and Greg Shanks along
with Eric Segers and Andy
Manson coped best with the
conditions and carded 90
points to win the
competition.
Bridget McNellis, Sandy
and Paul Fryer came home
second, one point in arrears
with 89.
Mo Marsay, Glynnis
Renecle and Terry Harris had
a poorer than average day,
scoring just 80 points,
ending with the much to be
avoided receipt of the
sponsor’s energy boosting
drinks.
Sonia Reynolds was
closest to the pin on the
eighth to win a bottle of
wine. She went on to birdie
the hole.
Other two-clubs were sunk
by Mike Brown (eighth) and
Bryan Robinson (11th).
Shanks’s 66 was the best
nett round of the day
followed by Brown and
McNellis, both on 68.
KGB RESULTS
Tuesday September 27:
Stiff and cold winds swept
the course on Tuesday
morning, but failed to deter
30 players from entering the
usual two-to-count stableford
alliance.
The field was drawn into
six four-balls and two threeballs.
In an unprecedented KGB
situation, the covey scoring
the most points was
this very tough half
marathon, which
started and
ended at
Hermanus High
School. She finished
in 2:51:08.
October 2:
Constantia Valley
Grape Run, Constantia
Carol Nepgen walked
the half marathon,
while Jean Nepgen
took on the 14km event.
These are both
disqualified due to two of its
members playing off the
forward tees while being
handicapped off the mens’
normal white tees. Thus the
winners of the morning’s
play were Neil Loundar, Matt
Chadwick and James Lobban
with 87 + 5 = 92 points.
They were just one point
to the good of runners-up
Tommy Meyer, Chris
Niebieszczanski, Wilton
Adcock and Cecil Grobelaar.
The Hamer en Sukkel went
to Barrie B Brady, Hugh
Holmes, Graham Findlay and
Len Bohnen, after the latter
two were found to be
suffering from the unique
malady of blue and white
colour blindness.
John Crandon holed the
only two-club of the morning
(eighth).
The day's best net rounds
were shot by Wilton Adcock
(66), Andy Manson (67),
Matt Chadwick and
Lobban (69).
Friday September 30:
The day saw 36 players
turned out to be drawn
into nine four-balls to
play a two-to-count
stableford “â la
Por tuguese” with a bonus
point available on any hole,
where three net birdies were
recorded.
(1) Jan Immelman, Tommy
Meyer, Gerald Churchley and
Mike Brown and (2) – Mark
Warren, Barrie B Brady, Cliff
Roberts (aka Cliff Richard)
and Hugh Holmes both
carded 93 points to become
joint winners of the
morning’s proceedings.
At the other end of the
points list, Mick Rushmere,
Richard Laing, Martin
Lambrechts and Heinz
Czepluch could only muster
77 points, thus having the
indignity of sharing the 19th
hole with the infamous
Hamer en Sukkel trophy.
Gerald and Richard
Farndell both birdied the
eighth, the only two-clubs of
the morning.
Both Lobban and Gerald
Churchley shot superb nett
64s and Hugh Holmes (68),
Barrie Brady and Mark
Warren (69) would have
been pleased with their
contributions to their covies.
Champs set to host
top karateka action
Nearly 400 competitors and Argentinian team to descend on Fish River Sun
OUTH African Shotokan Karate Academy
(SASKA) affiliate, East Cape Shotokan-Ryu
(ECSR) will convene the third of three major
Skarate championship events staged at the
Fish River Sun Hotel and Country Club Resort this
y e a r.
The World Union of Karate-do Federations
(WUKF) Africa Invitational and SASKA National
Championships starts today and continues until
S u n d ay.
ECSR has dojos situated in Grahamstown, Port
Alfred, Kenton-on-Sea, Fort Beaufort, Alicedale and
at Rhodes University. Training at ECSR is overseen
by head instructor, Gary Grapentin (sixth Dan black
belt) and a number of instructors.
The championship will see nearly 400
competitors of all ages and levels competing in
various individual and team categories.
A further boost for the championship is the
confirmed participation of a team from Argentina,
as well as five South African karateka who were
medallists at the WUKF World Championships held
in Ireland earlier this year.
Given the number of experienced South African
karateka already confirmed to participate, the
WUKF Africa Invitational and SASKA National
Championships promises to produce karate-do of
an exceptional standard.
Highly-rated current United World Karate South
Africa (UWKSA) and SASKA grand champion,
Nicholas Gaston Bellegarde (Cobras Dojo,
Alberton) is expected to be one of the top
contenders in the Senior Men’s Black Belt
c at e g o r i e s .
SASKA was founded in 1990 by Shihan Koos
Burger (eighth Dan black belt), a student of the
late Japanese karate master Kancho Taiji Kase
(1929–2004), founder of Shotokan-Ryu
Kase-Ha. Burger is also the first vice
president of the WUKF, one of the
largest international all-styles karate
sporting federations.
SASKA has affiliated dojos and
instructors throughout South Africa,
as well as in the United States,
and is nationally and
internationally respected for its
high technical standards.
Internationally, SASKA holds
affiliation to the WUKF and United
Wold Karate (UWK). SASKA is also closely
associated with the International Shotokan-Ryu
Karate-Do Shihankai (ISKS).
The Fish River Sun Hotel and Country Club
Resort will provide a unique and atmospheric
KATA COMMITMENT: Brent Smith of Grahamstown’s
East Cape Shotokan-Ryu is expected to be on top form
in the red to black belt 15-17 years of age categories.
Smith was a member of SASKA’s National team which
competed in the World Union of Karate-do Federations
World Championships in Ireland earlier this year
setting on the scenic Sunshine Coast of the
Eastern Cape.
The championship venue will comprise five
competition arenas, each enhanced by overhead
lighting, computerised scoring systems,
comfortable ring-side seating for spectators and
air-conditioning.
In addition, the championship experience will
provide the opportunity for participants, officials,
families and supporters of karate to enjoy a
holiday at the Fish River Sun.
The championship will be preceded by training
sessions with Burger and Argentinian team coach,
Sensei Damian Bidabehere. The weekend’s
activities will conclude with a Sea Gashuku
(outdoor training), which is expected to attract a
large number of karateka.
The chief organisers of the championship are
the ECSR’s Gary Grapentin and Maureen de Jager.
