Any moral high ground these students once had was abandoned long ago when they started disrupting classes, harassing and intimidating lecturers and fellow students who wanted to study, destroying property, looting and burning buildings. It rings hollow when students claim their protests have been “c o n st i t u t i o n a l ” and “peaceful”, when everyone around can see what they have been doing. Likewise the claims of police overreaction and brutality in response to their provocation. We have seen with our own eyes the footage of students throwing rocks and bottles at police at Wits University, of rampant looting at Fort Hare University, of the burnt-out library at the University of K wa Z u l u - N at a l . Early in the protests, a cellphone video was released showing how student protestors at the University of the North West manhandled a female lecturer after disrupting her class. The lecturer had asked her class if they wanted to continue with the lecture or listen to the rants of the protestors. The class full of students replied they wanted to study and the thugs did not like that, so they grabbed the lecturer and dragged her out of the classroom. And last week, it appears protesting students caused the death of a security guard at Wits University when they released a fire extinguisher. Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande has called for an investigation into the man’s death, and expressed shock that the university administration failed to report the incident. Nzimande has not covered himself in glory for how he has handled these protests from the beginning, but his statement following the security guard’s death is a step in the right direction. He said: “This incident, painful as it is, is proof that there are people who are hell bent on holding our universities to ransom and have no regard for the vast majority of law-abiding members of the university community who do not want to participate in protests. “This majority sector highly values the integrity of the academic programme and has shown an understanding of and appreciation for the lengths to which government has gone in support for the poor, middle class and missing middle students in the recent fee adjustment announcement.” The Rhodes protestors have been no angels either, with their constant disruptions of lectures, intimidating other students, destruction of property and taunting and obstructing the police. Pa n d o r a ’s horrors were released when university administrations and government first caved in to students’ demands last year. Blind Trevor needs help to finish his matric TREVOR Mackin, who is blind and may be seen walking around town with his faithful guide dog, Vici, is looking for help to complete his matric. Mackin was born in Cape Town and went to school in Worcester at the Pioneer School for the Blind. He and his family enjoyed holidays in Port Alfred and four years ago they moved here p e r m a n e n t l y. He is working on the switchboard at Pick n Pay, while doing his matric by correspondence through Intec College. If he completes his matric he hopes he can look for a busier switchboard or work for more than just one day a week. But he is in need of a teacher. He writes history in June next year and would like to start studying towards the exam as soon as possible. He has a sighted history textbook and needs guidance on structuring history e s s ay s . He can write his exam in Braille as he has done before or he can use a scribe to help him write down the answers. Security was nowhere to be seen and security cameras were out of order (and had been down for some time as another incident had occurred the previous week). The police arrived promptly and were most professional and efficient. Sergeant Smit went beyond her duty to help me. This turned into an attempted theft of my bakkie. I then had to call Kowie Locksmith as my door locks and vehicle ignition had been damaged. They were very efficient and sympathetic to my plight and soon had me back on the road. Another good was the licensing office: in and out in 15 minutes. Besides all the groceries and personal items that were stolen and all the damage to my vehicle, I feel this could have been avoided if the Rosehill Mall management – knowing fully well that their security cameras were not functioning – had supplied extra security in the parking area. It is t h at time of year when crime is high so we need to protect residents and visitors, especially as the festive season approaches. DAWN EWING It seems you can do what you like ONE of your articles, ‘Protect indigenous trees – or else’ [September 15]. My question is: or else what? It would seem in Port Alfred you can do what you like. You put up fences across the towpath, you threaten a person with a gun skiing off the riverbank, you paint red lines in front of your house. You pull down old houses and cut down milkwood trees and get a warning and, a few weeks later you remove the stumps so that it will not show. You then plant grass in the river to stop prawns breeding. It would seem that we can go ahead and do what we please and no action will be taken. In future I will build what I want, paint red lines and place white rocks in front of my house and cut down trees on municipal proper t y. I’LL DO IT MY WAY

Answer: I am currently a senior lecturer at Stenden and my favourite subject to teach is accounting. I also lecture marketing and revenue management and I coordinate minor courses in social entrepreneurship and lodge management. Q: What made you get into that line of work? A: I originally studied hospitality and then did a fourth year in management. After doing part-time work for the Cape Town Hotel School, I realised I had a passion for education and decided to pursue a career in education and hospitality combined. Q: Describe the most memorable experience you have had in your line of work? A: Writing “l at e ” on a st u d e n t ’s forehead with my board marker. I think Fifa 2010 was pretty memorable as well. The students were working in the VIP boxes and we had to leave Port Alfred at 4am on match days just to get them to the stadium on time. Getting about 100 students onto buses at that time of the day is no easy feat. Q: What do you do to unwind when you are not working? A: I like to exercise (gym/swimming/cycling/ running) or have a cold beer/glass of wine close to the beach or river. FA C E 2FA C E ... with Megan Walwyn Q: What is your motto in life? A: Live today. Q: What makes you happy? A: A sunny day at the beach. Simple. Q: What makes you angr y? A: People who look for reasons to complain. I think it’s best to try and see the good in everyone and enjoy life as much as possible. Why can’t everyone just get along? Q: What do you think about the youth of South Africa? Do you have any advice for them? A: I think they are independent and confident, which can be a great thing. I wish I had had more confidence in my teenage years. My advice: Get your nose out of your mobile phone and go for a walk outside. There is so much more to life than selfies and X-Box. Q: What do you like most about Port Alfred? A: The size (love small towns), the river, the beach and laid-back surf culture. Q: If you could change one thing about Port Alfred ... A: The ruling party. I’m a proud DA supporter. Q: What is your favourite music of all t i m e? A: The theme song from the movie, Cider House Rules. Q: Who would you like to take with you on The Amazing Race, given the oppor tunity? A: My brother, my boyfriend and my boyfriend’s best friend. They’re all fit, competitive and entertaining. PS. Can I take my Jack Russels? Q: Three wishes for South Africa ... A: It starts with education. We need better schools to educate children about family planning, life and how to keep our planet safe. I hope one day we will see a reduced crime rate and I’d like to see abused women given the chance to feel empowered in business and the communit y. Francois Vosloo, grand master of the Masonic Lodge, said the Masons had organised t wo fundraising projects, selling burgers at the lounge, at which they raised R1560, and selling raffle tickets for which the prize was a weekend on Inkwazi Island for four people (donated by Francois and Wendy Vo s l o o ) . The correct answer to the raffle question: What is the English name of the bird known as inkwazi, is fish eagle. The winner of the weekend for four on Inkwazi Island were Buco, who bought a whole page of raffle tickets and donated R500 to the cause.
