The stormy seas
of retirement
GOING on retirement is very similar to getting into
a two-man yacht and setting sail for the unknown
open seas with your loved one by your side.
You are certain to enter a very rough experience
as the stormy seas of equity markets and interest
rate volatility will be pounding your retirement
yacht from all sides.
Most of us spend 40 to
45 years of our lives
working hard while trying
to save to ensure a
comfortable retirement by
being part of the company
retirement fund and even
starting a retirement
annuity savings plan to
complement retirement funds.
Unfortunately an enormous percentage of our
fellow South Africans do not have a clue what
their needs may be during their years of
retirement. How does one plan retirement if you
don’t know how to go about it?
I have done my best to bring across the
message on several occasions that one actually
needs to consult with a qualified, experienced
financial advisor to assist with the forward
planning and calculations. A full retirement
planning process most certainly takes long hours
of planning and involves lots of complex
calculations to provide for a trouble-free
retirement period.
Statistics show that only
six out of every 100 people
currently make a d e q u at e
provision for their retirement
years. I can assure you that
except for the wealthy or the
ones who inherited millions,
the balance of the 6%, are
the ones who made
sufficient and timely use of the services of
qualified, experienced financial advisors.
The day you board your retirement yacht, you
are really faced with the unknown. So, to try and
navigate your own retirement direction, you most
certainly need to have a completely different
survival strategy.
During the post-retirement years, you will really
need to have a lot more than a life jacket.
Yes, a financial advisor is certain to charge for
his knowledge, experience and expert advice. But
the actual amount is sure to be returned to you
many times over.
In today’s volatile markets, one just cannot risk
one’s total retirement savings being swallowed up
by inflation or the volatility of the rand.
If you have been watching the markets, you will
have noticed the dangerous sliding value of the
rand against foreign currencies.
Only a few years ago the rand was still valued
at about R6 to the US dollar. Currently, it has slid
right down to R13 and even more to the dollar.
Every time some uneducated politician makes an
ignorant statement, the foreign investors grab
their millions and run to safer havens.
To prevent your retirement yacht from getting
wrecked on the rocks, don’t be too proud to ask
for help.
advice. Contact us on one of the following
