Celebrating a century
Fit, happy 100-year-old man still
fetches wood in wheelbarrow
JON HOUZET
ANEMATO man who
reached a milestone of
100 years last week, has
attributed his longevity
to God and good eating.
Mzwanele Ntezo, who still fetches
firewood in a wheelbarrow, turned
100 on October 10, but his family
waited till Saturday to celebrate his
birthday with a big cake.
Born in Peddie, Ntezo only got
married when he was 58, to a woman
22 years younger than he is. His wife,
Sikelwa, is now a sprightly 78.
They moved to Fletcherville in 1978
and then came to live in Port Alfred in
1997.
He worked on farms for most of his
life, looking after cattle and growing
vegetables.
He still grows vegetables,
becoming one of the participants in a
food garden project initiated by Minet
“R a st a r ” N o j o ko .
Nojoko was impressed that Ntezo
had reached such a milestone and
invited TotT to the family home for his
birthday party.
“I grow spinach, cauliflower,
beetroot and cabbage,” Ntezo said.
The vegetables are for the family’s
own consumption and also to sell.
Ntezo, who admitted he also ate
meat, said he never took medicine
and never had to go to a clinic or
hospital. His daughters, Zoleka
Mandari and Lindelwa Cekiso,
agreed.
He has five children – two sons and
three daughters – 18 grandchildren
and though he was a late starter, even
some great-grandchildren. They live
with Zoleka, her children and their son
Mzukisi Ntezo. They describe
themselves as a very close family who
support and love each other.
Asked to remember some
significant events in his lifetime, the
centenarian said: “Many things, too
many to name. I like the way my
children treat me. They treat me
very well – I will never forget
t h at ”.
Cekiso said: “I like the way
my dad was as a father – he
was a good father”.
Looking out for their aged
dad, the children are sure to
warn him to avoid certain places.
Relating stories about their dad,
the siblings said whenever they
made him tea, one cup was never
enough. He was sure to bang his
cup on the table and say, “More tea.”
There were also belly laughs all
around when they recalled how their
father didn’t like snakes, and once
when he saw something
suspicious on the ground,
beat it soundly with a stick
until he realised it was just
a pipe.
Another daughter,
Ntombi Mandari, said her
fat h e r ’s way of dealing
with his children when they
were fighting was to tell
them: "I won’t separate you,
I’m going to eat the one who
dies”.
Nojoko said Ntezo was the
oldest member of his garden
project and was
highly respected
by all involved in
the project.
Although the
old man would
not admit to this,
Nojoko also
believed smoking
dagga had
contributed to
his longevity.
Still going strong
Allegations of corruption
in Safa structures denied
DRIVE FOR FUNDS: Port Alfred High School principal Clive Pearson, left,
gratefully accepted a R12 000 cheque from Robert Avis of Eastern Cape
Motors at the school assembly on Monday. The money came from Eastern
Cape Motors and the Ford Motor Company through the Drive for Your School
campaign, in which parents, grandparents and friends of the school, as
well as pupils who were old enough, could test drive various vehicles. About
120 people participated on the day. Avis thanked PAHS for the opportunity
to give something back to the school
Missing waste
skips explained
LOUISE KNOWLES
A CONCERNED Port Alfred resident
wanting to dispose of his garden
refuse recently noticed that the
skips outside the tourism office
were missing.
TotT asked the municipality what
happened to them.
“Due to a lack of capital budget,
the municipality does not have the
capacity to remove the skips
immediately when they are full.
This resulted in a health nuisance,
and litter blowing into the Kowie
River. The decision was therefore
taken to remove them,” municipal
spokesman Cecil Mbolekwa
replied.
The concerned resident said that
the decision did not appear to be
communicated to residents.
However, during a controversy
over waste disposal in
Kenton-on-Sea, Ndlambe
community protection services
director Nombulelo Booysen-Willy
said she was opposed to dump
sites within the central business
dist rict.
Mbolekwa said garden refuse is
collected if it is broken down and
placed in bags for collection, to a
maximum of two bags per
household.
“However, if people are unable
to break or chop the garden refuse
into smaller pieces, the trees,
branches or stumps have to be
removed to the Port Alfred landfill
site,” he said.
Son said to have unduly gained from bursary
JON HOUZET
A TOP official in local
South African Football
Association (Safa)
structures has denied
there is anything
untoward about
securing a Safa
bursary for his son,
who does not play
fo ot b a l l .
Safa Sarah
Baartman Region
president Mziwanele
Wopa was responding
to allegations by a
local football team that
he made decisions for
personal financial
benefit or to benefit
friends.
The management of
the Teenagers Football
Club, from
Ekuphumleni in
Kenton-on-Sea,
brought their
complaint to TotT after
an exchange of letters
with Wopa in August
and last month, as well
as an appeal to
provincial structures,
which elicited no
response.
Teenagers manager
Ntobeko Magwaxaza,
assistant coach
Mncedi Somxo and
trainer Similo Mbabela
were accompanied by
their sponsor Ronald
Engert, who they have
relied on to draft
letters and send
correspondence by
e-mail.
Engert, who makes
p l ay e r ’s cards which
they have to use to
prove they are
registered with a team,
said Wopa’s son,
Luthando, had come to
him with two Young
Chiefs players and
wanted to play his
card.
“Later I was told this
young man has never
played soccer and is
not interested. So why
do they need the
player card for a
person who is not
playing? Then I heard
Wopa had received a
Safa bursary for his
son,” Engert said.
He asked Wopa
about it, and provided
TotT with Wopa’s
written response that
he had personally
explained the bursary
opportunities on two
occasions – once to
Port Alfred clubs and
once to clubs in
Kenton-Marselle.
“He said the only
condition for the
bursary was that you
have to be a black
South African,” Enger t
said.
“We ’ve never heard
about the bursary, it
was never advertised
and we have Grade 12
p l ay e r s , ” said
Teenagers manager
Ntobeko Mlamla.
“We believe he
abused an official
position for personal
financial gain.”
Engert said the
second complaint
related to a game
between the Teenagers
and the Young Chiefs.
They discovered that
the Chiefs had fielded
three players from
other teams (two from
Cacadu FC Alexandria
– Siyabonga Johannes
and Ayanda Sifunda,
and one from Junior
Sundowns FC Marselle
– Khayalethu Twani) in
two regular Ndlambe
(the Kenton/Marselle
stream committee)
was null and void
because they did not
follow the correct
procedures and did not
present their case in
time.
The Teenagers
appealed, and received
a strange response,
sent from Wopa’s
e-mail address, that
although Safa’s
letterhead was on the
verdict of August 13,
Safa did not preside
over the matter.
Wopa admitted his son did not
play football, ‘but is a recruit
earmarked for management’
Local Football
Association (NLFA)
games, in
contravention of the
Safa Uniform Rules.
The Teenagers and
the other affected
team reported this to
the officials at the
game and the NLFA.
The NLFA informed the
affected teams that the
Young Chiefs had
forfeited the points
they made.
But subsequently,
the Teenagers received
a letter from Safa
Sarah Baartman
region, signed by B
Jonas, that the
decision of the NLFA
¿

ĂůŬŽĨŚĞŽŶ
ΛĂůŬŽŌŚĞŽŶĞĐ
ĂůŬŽĨŚĞŽŶŶĚůĂŵďĞ

It was said to be a
“m i st a ke ” by the NLFA
disciplinar y
commit tee.
The Teenagers sent
their appeal again, and
on August 31, were
surprised to receive
the exact same verdict
with the same letter
content back as of
August 13, but now
under the logo of the
NLFA and signed by
Bongani Mashibo
Jibiliza.
Te e n a g e r s
management said this
cast suspicion on the
appeal process itself.
They felt it was done to
favour the Young
Chiefs so they would
be able to go to the
p l ay of f s .
Responding to the
issue of the bursary,
Wopa told TotT he was
also a teacher at
I k a m va l e s i z w e
Combined School,
where his son
matriculated in 2012.
“When the Fifa
Legacy bursary
scheme was
established after the
2010 Fifa World Cup, I
was always appealing
to members to inform
clubs in their localities
about Fifa Legacy
stating that clubs
should assist pupils,
especially the poor
black children, even if
they are not playing
football – as long as
they will commit to
contribute to football
upon the completion of
the funded studies,”
Wopa said.
“Besides this, I had
consistently informed
the matric class
teacher in my school
about this bursary,
asking her to even
refer the pupils to me
for assistance when
applying.”
He said he had done
the same at
Nompucuko Combined
School in Marselle.
Wopa admitted his
son did not play
football, “but is a
recruit of Young Chiefs
earmarked for
management”.
“Being a regional
president, I never
came across any
clause prohibiting a
member of any Safa
structure or a
dependent thereof
from benefiting from
the bursary.”
Chairman of the
NLFA Andile Marasi
responded to the issue
of the Teenagers’
complaint about the
Young Chiefs.
“We are doing
everything according
to Safa Uniform Rules.
Procedures must be
fo l l o w e d , ” Marasi said.
He said the NLFA
unit committee did not
have the authority to
decide on any alleged
transgression by the
Young Chiefs, but had
to refer it to the NLFA.
“The disciplinary
committee handled the
matter and the verdict
was given. I can’t
answer for them.”

CCTV cameras in the spotlight
LOUISE KNOWLES
A SPECIAL public
meeting highlighting
ongoing crime
concerns in Port Alfred
drew a bigger turnout
than regular meetings
of the Community
Policing Forum (CPF)
last Thursday.
One of the major
talking points was the
use of cameras in
preventing crime,
especially at Port
Alfred’s crime
h ot s p ot s .
Sergeant Vincent
Plaatjies spoke about
his role in analysing
such hotspots.
Plaatjies said Port
Alfred was divided into
sectors for policing
and was working in
conjunction with Multi
Security to determine
where most of the
crimes occurred each
week.
There was a
question from the floor
regarding where Multi
Security and police
cars were stationed
during the day.
“Multi Security has
four vehicles which
are in contact with the
police van at all
times,” Multi
Securit y’s Clinton
Millard said.
“The majority of
vehicles will normally
be where the crime
hotspots are
detected,” he said.
Millard gave a
presentation on the
different security
cameras that were
used to detect crime
in Port Alfred and
those that were still
needed.
He said cameras
could also be moved
from one hotspot to
a n ot h e r.
Crime incidence had
dropped from 80% to
20% after a camera
was put up outside
Absa bank on Main
Street in 2011.
This camera can
turn at 360° angles
and also zoom in to
number plates and
fa c e s .
It can also scan
areas over roof tops
and has an infra-red
facility for night vision.
Other cameras were
placed at intersections
and footpaths, and at
car parks if there were
any complaints.
Even dummy
cameras which cost
R450 can be a
deterrent, Millard said.
Homeowners should
ADDRESSING CRIME CONCERNS: Sergeant Cindy Pienaar, left, and
Vincent Plaatjies, who was promoted to sergeant earlier that day, spoke
at the open meeting of the Community Policing Forum meeting at the
Port Alfred Ski Boat Club last Thursday
Picture: LOUISE KNOWLES
watch their own house
and intersections for
any suspicious
activity, he said.
“If you are safe, your
neighbour is safe,”
Millard said.
If your street lights
are out of order, you
should report this to
your municipality,
acting CPF chairman
George Galbraith said.
The police can be
contacted on (046)
604-2000/1 (office) or
the duty officer on
082-330-0249 (after
hours).
When you are
reporting burglaries of

electronic equipment,
make sure that you
provide a serial
number, so that when
stolen goods are
recovered, they can be
linked to your
complaint, Plaatjies
said.
It was asked in the
meeting whether
Rosehill Mall cameras
were operational since
a letter published in
TotT revealed that they
were not.
Rosehill Mall
manager, Gert
Jordaan, said they
would be back in
operation this week.
Millard also provided
a breakdown of the
type of funds that were
required, including
R28 000 for four
cameras or R38 000
with solar panels to
provide power.
Each camera with
live streaming costs
R1 200 a month.
Suggested sites for
the cameras were the
corner of Southdowns
and Saltvlei, the traffic
lights on the main
road, the corner of
Southwell and
Atherstone, the corner
of George and Hill
streets where the
bushes provide access
to the hospital, as well
as the beaches, where
there is a lot of
drinking and fighting.
The local SAPS
would be able to raise
funds from higher up
as it did when the
Rapid Rural Response
started, Plaatjies said.
The CPF is working
on a plan to make a
presentation to
sponsors, together
with Multi Security,
Galbraith said. But as
it is a community
project, other security
companies in Port
Alfred are invited to
join the camera
project, he said.
YOUR VOICE
... vox pops on the street
Do you think President Jacob Zuma will fire Finance Minister
Pravin Gordhan and, if so, what will the consequences be?
DAVE ELMS: I really
don’t think he will
sack Gordhan. If he
does, it will open up
a can of worms for
Zuma and there will
be dark days ahead
for the country.
JACOB MANDRA: I
don’t think he will do
that. Even now our
currency is very
unstable. It will only
be worse if Zuma
sacks Gordhan.
BYRON NEL: No, I don’t
think Zuma would do
that. There will be big,
big problems if he
does.
TRUSTY NBENDNI: I
don’t think so. It
[Gordhan’s sacking]
would be a disaster for
the country.
PETER ELS: I really
hope that doesn’t
happen. Who would
Zuma replace Gordhan
with?
MILEKA MIZE: I
cannot believe that
President Zuma
would do such a
thing. If he sacks
Gordhan it will
plunge the country
into crisis.
Mayor relaunches
local Aids council
LOUISE KNOWLES
THE dormant Ndlambe
Aids council was
relaunched last week
due to the initiative of
mayor Phindile Faxi.
Faxi contacted HIV
and Aids co-ordinator
for Cacadu Celiwe
Chewu to revive the
structure to address
ways of reducing the
high rate of HIV
i n fe c t i o n .
A workshop was held
at the Ndlambe council
chambers last Thursday
to discuss the high rate
of HIV infection in
Ndlambe, its causes
and how to reduce the
incidence of HIV.
One group noted the
problem of school
children, who are
neglected by their
parents, and who
become sexually active
and seek blessings
from older sexual
par tners.
The workshop also
debated the structure
of the local Aids forum,
and Cacadu facilitator
Nkosiyabo Lose
recommended the
creation of a technical
task team.
Lose is the district
Aids council advisor
seconded to Cacadu
from German company
Gesellschaft fur
I n t e r n at i o n a l e
Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
GIZ is assisting the
South African National
Aids Council as well as
provincial and district
Aids councils in the
Eastern Cape and
Mpumalanga, since
South Africa has the
highest rate of HIV
infection in the world.
“It was a good
meeting, well attended
by all structures of civil
societ y,” Faxi said.
He said that the
challenge in this area is
that residents are not in
touch with reality in
terms of the statistical
incidence of HIV and
Aids and in which areas
it is rife.
“This structure will
clue us up and drive
the necessary
processes, such as
where to find
school-going
households and render
a helping hand from
the municipality,” Fa x i
said.
“We will bring in the
tavern owners and
explain the dangers of
the pandemic.”
He said when people
become inebriated they
tend to indulge in
irresponsible sexual
b e h av i o u r.
“We need to educate
the public,” Faxi said.
“We also need to reach
out to hospitals and
clinics and be part of
their committees so we
know what challenges
we are facing.”
Another problem
mentioned was the
belief that truck drivers
having casual sex were
increasing the
incidence of HIV and
Aids in the community.
The Aids council will
make regular reports to
the Ndlambe council. It
will also link up with
the district to ensure a
global view, said the
m ay o r.
“At my inauguration I
asked for 100 days to
scan the environment
to see what needs to be
done, for example on
the HIV and Aids
issue,” he said. “One of
the milestones has
been reached with this
workshop.”
Faxi will present a list
of achievements he has
made during his first
100 days as mayor at
the council meeting on
October 26.
OPINION
Finding
solace in
c h i l d re n
ATTENDING a Port Alfred Pre-primary
concert on the evening of the day I
received word that my close friend Derek
Victor had died, turned out be a
comforting experience.
I would have said oddly comforting, but
then, no, why should it be odd?
Watching the little ones singing and
dancing on stage in their gorgeous,
colourful costumes, enjoying their
innocence, joy and enthusiasm, brought
peace and comfort to my spirit in the
midst of grief.
I felt the same way last year when my
mother died, and I was also blessed to
attend the Happy Hours and Port Alfred
Pre-primary concerts, which are always a
lavish, well-choreographed and humorous
affair. Teachers, parents, costume
designers, makeup artists, musical
directors and sound and lighting
volunteers must all be commended for
how much effort they put into those little
productions.
Also, the children, for how well they
learn their lines and songs, and play their
parts with such exuberance. One would
never think there was a shy one among
them!
Watching those children, I am reminded
that life goes on, and a new generation
rises to take the place of those who have
passed on. I also remembered how much
my mother had loved attending those
concerts with me, because she loved little
children. And so, when I see little
children, I think of my dear mother.
Not being a parent myself, I imagine
this is how parents and grandparents
must feel about their children and
grandchildren – finding joy and taking
comfort in the offspring that are their
l e g a c y.
We will all pass from this world, and
though we may not often think about it,
will want to be remembered. And unless
we become famous, the people who will
remember us the most are our own
families – those still living when we die,
and the generations that come after
them, as stories are passed down from
parent to child.
May we all aspire to be remembered for
the good and worthwhile things we do, as
I am certain we all would prefer the bad
to be forgotten.
And yet our sins and misdeeds are part
of our legacy, because we are human.
I am so grateful that each newborn is
innocent, and that it lasts for a brief while
before they too become a part of this
fallen world with all its suffering and
hear tache.
And while we may have different
beliefs, I hope we all long for a new world
beyond our present reality.
Ladder for potholes a step up
MANY residents of Kenton
on Sea like to go for a walk
in the beautiful
surroundings.
It is good exercise,
wonderful fresh air and an
enjoyable experience.
Unfortunately, this
relaxation has become
dangerous. Kenton’s
streets are beset with
potholes – little and big
and some dangerously
deep. And an innocent
walker could easy stumble
and even fall into one.
But here is the good
news for all Kenton
walkers. My friend and I
are busy developing a
compact little ladder. A
walker takes a little ladder
with them on their route
between the potholes.
Our plan includes a few
things. The ladder will be
very light and made of
good metal. It folds up
small and when you are
down in the pothole, you
can quickly open it and
climb out again. The ladder
includes a small torch to
help if it gets dark down in
the pothole. My friend feels
strongly that we must
ensure that the ladder can
serve as a walking stick.
We are looking for a
suitable name for our
ladder and will accept all
s u g g e st i o n s .
We are convinced that
this pothole ladder will be
in great demand because
there are more and more
potholes and it is
becoming more and more
A: To go for a night
out and dance.
Q: What is your
motto in life?
A: "I will never
leave thee nor
forsake thee"
(Hebrews 13:5).
Q: What makes
you happy?
A: Being active,
playing rugby and
dancing. Most
definitely being
around my family
and friends.
Q: What makes
you angry?
A: Obnoxious
people.
Q: What do you
think about the
youth of South
Africa? Do you have
any advice for
t h e m?
A: I feel they have
a challenging life of
extreme difficulties
with numerous
things such as
bullying and social
media expectations
and many more! I do,
however, feel most of
the youth in South
Africa are spoilt and
used to getting
everything without
having to work for it.
This is unfortunate
as they would not be
able to fend for
themselves as adults
in the future.
I think they must
believe in
themselves and
appreciate what they
got in life and never
take anything for
granted... and don’t
forget they need to
do a lot more
dancing.
Q: What do you
like most about
Port Alfred?
A: The sea and
beauty of our quaint
little town.
Q: If you could
change one thing
about Port Alfred …
A: I would like a
big recreational
studio with the
correct flooring,
mirrors and
ventilation that could
be used for all the
dance teachers, yoga
teachers, pilates,
martial arts and
fitness classes. Port
Alfred lacks this and
it would be a brilliant
opportunity for
positive recreation,
especially for our
youth.
Q: What is your
favourite music of
all time?
A: RnB/pop.
Q: Who would you
like to take on
Amazing Race given
the opportunity?
A: My wife Twan as
we are both really
competitive people
and we would have
lots of giggles and
stories to tell after
t h at .
Q: Three wishes
for South Africa …
A: To bring
Christianity back into
schools. To end the
vast corruption and
hatred between
people in our
country. For more job
opportunities to be
created as our
unemployment rate
in our country is
26.7% according to
BUSINESSFORUM
How risky is your
investment style?
WHEN it comes to investing
your hard-earned funds, the
most important factor is to
establish your personal
investment risk profile.
Many folks, especially the
more senior ones, have
probably never heard of this.
There are five different
personality profiles that
establish the amount of risk
the investor is prepared to
take with his or her
investment. These categories
are vitally important to the
investment adviser to be able
to supply you with the correct
investment advice.
Conservative Risk
Profile (The Nurturer):
These people like
routine and relish the
comforts of life and
always want things to
work out as planned.
Nurturers don’t want
any surprises and the
maintaining of their capital is
of paramount importance.
The investment portfolio that
provides the most comfort
consists of income orientated
assets such as cash savings.
Shares make these people
very nervous.
Cautious Risk Profile (The
I n te l l e c t u a l ) :
These are the thinkers and
they seem to understand the
very basics of investing. They
are cautious about taking
risks, but also want to dip a
toe in the water, without
being swept away by the rip
current. The intellectual
wants their capital to be safe
and prefers a stable income
and/or investment growth.
Moderate Risk Profile (The
Enthusiast):
These are individuals who
are interested in new ideas
and possibilities. They like to
draw heavily on the skills of
an investment expert because
of the wide variety of choices.
Enthusiasts also accept the
fact that some risk is required
for capital to grow. They want
an investment that is exposed
to a diverse range of stock
and asset classes so that the
MONEY
M AT T E R S
... with Nico Human
portfolio can weather a
downturn in any of these
investment arenas. They are
happy to leave portfolio
decisions to an expert and
allow them to shift between
the asset classes as
conditions require.
Moderate Aggressive Profile
(The Assured):
These are the determined
planners who know exactly
what they want. Assured
investors have done their
research and are willing to
take some risk, but their
world is firmly rooted in what
they trust and know. Their
primary aim is capital growth
to realise ambitious but
realistic goals. Fluctuations in
returns are tolerable because
the long-term picture is worth
the short-term pain. Their
investments are spread
across all major asset classes
but lean heavily towards
equities as it offers the best
long-term returns.
Aggressive Profile (The
M av e r i c k ) :
Mavericks embrace the
unknown because they want
the pay-off. That does not
mean that mavericks are
reckless. They first do their
homework and rely on trusted
experts. They are
normally in an
investment for the
long-term and are
prepared to tolerate
significant volatility to
reap the maximum
returns in the longer
term, at least five years
and beyond. The aggressive
portfolio comprises more
equities but also includes
other major asset classes for
the benefit of when these are
having a good run.
Each of these categories
fulfil a different purpose and
that it why it is vitally
important to entrust your
investments only to a
reputable and honest
investment advisor.
WATER MAN: Donovan Samuels, hydrogeologist and director of Geoleco (Pty) Ltd, is making
himself available to the area by providing professional and expert advice and services on
groundwater
Picture: BRYAN SMITH
Local hydrogeologist at your service
WATER is a vital component to
life, and its quality and
availability is paramount to our
future existence.
Groundwater is recognised
as a reliable source of fresh
water in South Africa, and is
therefore a precious
commodit y.
If you have a borehole or
consider investing in
groundwater, it is
recommended to obtain
professional advice from a
Frontier 4x4 delivers on quality
FRONTIER 4X4 Centre has been
in operation since October 5
with dealer principal Viv
Jordan, but belongs to the
much bigger dealership, Settler
City Toyota in Grahamstown.
Frontier 4X4 sales executive,
Charline Middleditch said: “I
have been in the motor vehicle
accessory industry for many
years, so when this opportunity
came about I jumped at it.
Knowing we are surrounded by
farms, game farms and many
boating and 4x4 enthusiasts it
could only be the right choice
for me.”
Middleditch said she loved
dealing with people, and that is
why she has always been
involved with sales.
“I love meeting new faces
and conversing on common
ground. I come from
Johannesburg, where I ran a
vehicle fitment centre for seven
years. Before that, I was in the
sales side of the motor
accessory industry.”
h y d r o g e o l o g i st .
Donovan Samuels, owner of
Geoleco (Pty) Ltd based in Port
Alfred, has been a
hydrogeologist for over ten
years and is involved with
groundwater throughout the
Eastern Cape and Southern
Africa. Samuels holds a Master
of Science degree in
Hydrogeology from the
University of the Western
Cape, and is affiliated with the
Groundwater Division of South
Frontier 4X4’s main product
line is Old Man Emu
Suspensions.
“There are many other brands
in the market but not quite
robust and as superior quality
as Old man Emu, a product that
can handle South Africa’s tough
conditions,” Middleditch said.
Other products include ARB
Bull Bars and Back Bumpers
that are also of the highest
quality, airbag tested and, more
importantly, approved by Ford
SA as an accessory.
Frontier 4X4 also has a
variety of Desert products from
rock sliders, heavy-duty
air-jacks – and much more.
There are also various
spotlights, fog lights and
compressors.
Middleditch plans to grow
Frontier 4x4 centre into an
oasis of 4x4 equipment for
Grahamstown and the
surrounding areas, allowing
clients from far and wide to
source accessories and
Africa, Eastern Cape branch in
East London.
“Hydrogeological information
to the groundwater users
especially farmers,
municipalities and private
developers is key to the
longevity and sustainability of
the groundwater resource in
our region,” said Samuels.
Contact Donovan Samuels
on 073-864-6534 for queries
regarding groundwater
boreholes.
replacement parts for all their
4x4 requirements. Middleditch
also plans on attending and
hosting 4x4 events in the area
and becoming part of the
communit y.
“I want to be able to offer all
the dealerships around us
excellent service, so they don’t
have the risk of sending new
vehicles so far away for
accessory fitments and putting
the client’s vehicle at the risk of
being damaged with
unnecessary mileage on their
new vehicles.
“My main thrust is to make
the people of Grahamstown and
Port Alfred and surrounding
communities aware of Frontier
4x4 centre and what we are
capable of doing,” Middleditch
said. “Our quality products are
not the cheapest on the market
but, I can tell you, they are the
most reliable and effective.
“The cheaper products out
there certainly won’t withstand
our SA conditions,” she said.
Flame 1, cancer 0
ROB KNOWLES
STRENGTH of mind is one
of the most important
factors when combating
disease, and American
national Jeanne Harris-
Metter, better known as
Flame, is an exemplar of
being, “one tough cookie”.
If you don’t know, Flame
is a singer/dancer/
comedian who has been
entertaining the people of
the area since arriving in
the country six years ago.
Her shock of red hair
(not dyed, she assures
you) is her trademark and
has earned her the
nickname Flame. She is
vivacious, funny and loud,
“just like an American”.
Diagnosed with stage 3
breast cancer while living
Fighter shows disease can be beaten
in the US in October 2002,
Harris-Metter has shown
that cancer can be beaten.
“I sustained a kick to the
chest during a martial arts
competition and afterwards
the pain would not go
away, ” she relates.
“I had been a keen
competitor in the martial
arts for many years, but I
realised something was
wrong so I went to the
doctors.”
After a biopsy had
diagnosed the disease in
January 2003,
Harris-Metter underwent a
double mastectomy and an
extensive six months of
chemotherapy and
radiation therapy
treatment. She also had
lymph nodes removed and,
having lived such an active
life as both a stage
performer in Las Vegas and
other places, found that
she was unable to bend
her arms and legs without
extreme pain.
“The treatment is almost
worse than the disease,
and it made me very
weak,” she remembers.
“Getting to the mailbox
was a struggle.”
However, when she could
hardly move as she
recovered from her surgery
and treatment, she read
books and watched martial
arts training videos and, as
soon as she could, she was
back on her feet competing
in martial arts
competitions and in 2004
won the prestigious
Tennessee State Women’s
Forms Championship,
senior black belt division.
Harris-Met ter’s husband,
Jeff, a South African whose
parents lived in Port Alfred,
is the lighting engineer for
country music legend
Kenny Rogers, and
suggested they move to
the area while he
continued working with
Rogers in the US.
Harris-Metter therefore
left her American home in
2010 and came to live in
Port Alfred.
“When recovering from
cancer it is necessary to
watch your diet and
exercise regularly,” she
said.
“Fortunately, this was a
routine I was already used
to with my dancing career
and my martial arts
training. But exercising the
body is as important as
exercising your mind.”
Anyone who has been to
one of her shows in the
area would not believe that
the 58-year-old was ever so
ill.
“I don’t participate in
combat anymore, but teach
Tai Chi at the St Francis
Health Centre. Being fit is
very important and, aside
from the normal aches and
pains as I get older, I’m in
good physical shape,” she
said.
When they moved
he worked in finance
travelled to many
He, Anita and their
daughters, Kathryn
coming to Port Alfred
for holidays at his
since 1988.
By the time their
daughters had
matriculated and were
settled in tertiary
education, Derek and
Anita moved to Port
they had their own
They bought
it from the bottom and
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
THIS weekend El Shaddai Christian Academy is
holding its annual musical concert on Friday
evening. This is a special event, held at the school
grounds at Green Fountain Farm, and is one of the
School’s bigger functions of the year. Then, on
Saturday, first at Rosehill Mall and then at Heritage
Mall, Rotary Club is holding a Shave-a-thon in
alignment with Cancer awareness month, and
specifically breast cancer. So, get yourself ready to
have your hair cut or you head shaved, or just get
your hair dyed. This is another worthy cause, so
please support Rotary in this venture.
THE IDP process planning meeting took place
yesterday morning, attended by ward councilors
from Ndlambe and members of the general public,
all anxious to learn what was in store for the
2016/2017 budget year. Mayor Phindile Faxi led the
meeting and said he wanted to proceed
aggressively with the proposed plan, and make
certain the processes followed were transparent.
Some members of the public were concerned that
many items submitted over years had seemed to
have fallen out of the IDP system, and Faxi assured
those present that this would not happen in the
future. We will have to wait and see how the new
system pans out, and whether some of the more
important projects get the attention they deserve.
IT’S like déjà vu all over again. For those who have
not had access to the news (or those who only
watch SABC) here’s the story so far. Despite
assurances that it was not the case, the director of
public prosecutions, Shaun Abrahams (who
determines if the state will prosecute a case), has
issued a summons to finance minister Pravin
Gordhan in relation to an early retirement pay-out
granted to former SARS deputy commissioner Ivan
Pillay in 2010 and the extension of his contract.
Pravin is accused of theft and fraud, despite there
being many precedents of this having happened in
the past and the fact that Pravin did not benefit
financially from his actions. No one, except for
Abrahams, seems to think there is a case to
answer for. However, like the last time politics got
involved in finance (Nene’s replacement by
“weekend special” Des van Royan) the rand is in
imminent danger of spirally down out of control.
At a time when the ratings agencies are breathing
down our necks, a touch of discretion by the DPP
could have saved the country, quite literally,
billions of rand.
THE movement for the decolonisation of education
received a severe blow last week when a UCT
student made her opinions of science clear. She
said, with complete confidence, that decolonising
the sciences means abolishing them altogether.
On a video taken of her ridiculous and
misinformed rant she said that science is a
product of “Western modernity”. She said that
science should be scrapped because it was
“wholly colonial and hence irredeemable”.
Apparently, at least in that student’s mind, all
things Western should be scrapped in favour of
“the African way”. Unfortunately, her rant was
taken from information she had found on the
internet, using her Samsung Smart Phone, and
recorded using sound equipment from Philips and
transmitted by satellite to people all over the
world. Perhaps she wants next week’s TotT to be
praise-sung on the steps of the civic centre, or
maybe she’s just failing her academic year
because she doesn’t understand the science
subjects, or history.
THE rand is currently holding its own against
international currencies, but this could all change
in a moment if Moody’s ratings agency delivers an
unfavourable report and our currency is relegated
to “junk” status. With the Gupta’s state capture in
the news, and student riots hitting the headlines,
plus the imminent appearance of Pravin Gorhan in
court over alleged fraud and theft, it is likely this
will happen. As a junk status currency (like the
Zim dollar, for example) investors will not take
noon at Woodlands Cottages and Backpackers, just
outside Kenton on the R343 Grahamstown Road.
New face of an old friend
Total Port Alfred service receives an upgrade
ROB KNOWLES
ONE of Port Alfred’s
favourite service
stations opened
yesterday following
months of
refurbishment, and the
results are a cleaner
forecourt, increased
efficiency at the
pumps and new ways
to pay.
What hasn’t
changed though is the
garage’s commitment
to quality service and
friendliness.
“The new forecourt
has been a dream and
a project that I have
been fighting for over
a long period of time,”
owner Noleen Acton
said.
“Although Total Port
Alfred may be seen as
a smaller site in
comparison to service
stations on national
roads and elsewhere,
Total SA saw our
passion and dream
that we wanted to offer
our customers. If it
was not for the
support of our
customers, Total SA
would never have
invested in our town
for the future.”
Acton said the
renovation became an
absolute necessity in
order to be able to
offer the best to its
customers and the
town. Total SA have
extremely high
environmental and
safety standards, and
will do all that is
necessary to conform
to these standards. By
doing so, they improve
the environment,
safety and daily living
st a n d a r d s .
“We needed to
modernise in order to
offer better service, a
better shopping
experience,” Acton
said. “After all, one
shops where one get
the best service, and
that is Total Port
Alfred’s motto –
Service Excellence.”
During the
refurbishment the
entire forecourt was
demolished.
Contamination was
eliminated and items
replaced as necessary.
New high-specification
tanks were installed
with greater carrying
capacity along with
brand new pumps,
each dispensing all
products; presently
customer, Ralph Clegg
ULP95 and Diesel
50ppm, with a modern
tagging system that
eliminates any
possible errors and
fraud.
The project started
on May 15 and signed
off by Total SA five
months later, on
October 18.
The cost of the
refurbishment was
carried in the joint
venture between
Toyota Port Alfred and
Total SA and Total Port
Alfred.
The extra tanks will
provide a greater
carrying capacity, also
providing a system
were a specific pump
will not run dry before
any other pump. This
together with the fact
that diesel and ULP95
can be dispensed from
all pumps, will improve
the flow and waiting
period of a customer’s
visit. With the new
automated system, the
attendants tag
themselves into a
pump and then
register the sale
required. This will
prevent any
over-fuelling and
possibilities of fraud.
Account customers
will also be issued
with tags which will be
tagged at the pump,
and the purchase will
go directly to the
client’s accounts.
By providing specific
information, such as in
registration numbers,
rand value limits,
mileage, diesel or
petrol specific and so
forth, account
customers will be able
to monitor their
accounts more
e f fe c t i v e l y.
There are no selfservice
facilities, and
Acton said, “South
Africa, and especially
Eastern Cape, are not
up to that standard
yet. Anyhow, we are
here to create jobs, not
to do away with them.”
There is still a
facility for trucks but
Total Port Alfred has
chosen to focus more
on its local customers
and holiday-makers.
“We choose to retain
our clients, offering
them the best
continuous service
excellence,” Acton
said. “Our happy
customers bring
Congratulations and best wishes
accommodate all
trucks and a new high
powered diesel pump
has been installed so
that trucks do not have
long periods of waiting
while refuelling. This
will also reduce any
Acton is excited
about the
brought to the town of
Port Alfred.
“We believe in a
Japanese word
‘kaizen’, meaning
continuous
may be. Port Alfred
has so much potential,
and it is important for
the businesses and
community to make
does all things
possible to
continuously improve,”
she said.
Acton also said she
could not forget her
wonderful staff who
have made this all
possible.
“Without them
Kowie Toyota/Total
Port Alfred would not
able to offer our
customers the best
service possible and,
by doing so, retain the
“I would like to take
this opportunity to
thank all my loyal
customers for their
support and look
forward to greeting
you on the forecourt.
“We also look forward
to welcoming new
customers to our
happy family.
“Total Port Alfred
together with the
support of the town
will continue
supporting our
‘Creating Smiles’
campaign, by giving
back a percentage of
its diesel sales to local
community projects.
“Management would
like to thank you for
your patience during
the construction period
and trust you will bear
with us as we venture
into offering you, our
customers, service
excellence,” she said.

fun affair
THE Bathurst Country Affair (BCA) will be a
one-day affair this year, on November 5.
“Our reason for only hosting the event over
one day is due to the fact that the village has
been extremely busy and we are all quite tired.
Next year the event will be back to normal,”
Tanya Schenk said on behalf of the organisers.
“Once again the BCA promises all things
great and fantabulous when it comes to food,
wine and song. The usual live entertainment
programme at various pubs is promised as well
as the renowned Pro-Carmine Choir who were a
complete hit last year.
“Wine tastings, deli foods, divine and
delicious pop-up restaurants and quirky events
are guaranteed. Everything that ensures you
leave the BCA with a full tummy and a big
smile on your face,” Schenk said.
The Famous Pineapple Throwing Competition
again heads up the hilarity at the centre of the
universe and is not to be missed.
Vintage tractors, classic cars, alpacas and
the locals will keep you entertained and
enthralled all day.
“And don’t forget to enter the Bokdrol
Interacters all
Project gives fire fund R20000 boost
ROB KNOWLES
ROTARY Interacters from
Port Alfred High School gave
a big boost to the school’s
fire fund last week by
donating a whopping
R20 000, collected from
pupils, their parents and
friends of the school, by
selling puzzle pieces to
create a completed jigsaw
depicting an aerial shot of
the school property.
The project began when
Interact president Inga
Mpepanduku went to see
principal Clive Pearson and
asked him how they could
assist the school.
“He took me to the foyer
and showed me
photographs that had been
virtually destroyed in the
fire,” Mpepanduku said.
“One was of the school,
taken from above, and the
other was a photograph of
the pupils of the school.
“Mr Pearson was upset
because he said the
photographs were special to
him. He said he loved the
photographs and that he
would like Interact to
replace them.”
Mpepanduku took the
idea back to her committee,
Bengis’ elephant talk enthrals
ROB KNOWLES
STEPPING in at the 11th
hour, to replace a
planned speaker, Roy
Bengis gave an
excellent talk on a
subject he is intimately
familiar with at the
Probus Club meeting
last Tuesday, showing
that elephants are both
intelligent and socially
sophisticated animals.
Former chief state
veterinarian at Skakuza
and consultant to the
Kruger National Park,
Bengis, related elephant
characteristics to the
audience.
Elephants, he said,
were the most massive
of the land mammals,
with cows reaching a
weight of 3628kg and
bulls around 5443kg
Their body temperature
is 340°C and, because
of their mass, this
makes temperature
regulation an issue.
That is why African
elephants have large
ears. Blood flows
through vessels in the
ears which acts like a
radiator. Alternatively,
the heavier males often
extend their penises
which also contain a
multitude of blood
vessels.
Elephants live in a
matriarchal society
comprising family
groups. They become
sexually mature at
MANY THANKS: Chris Day, left, presents Roy
Bengis, centre, with a gift for their appreciation
of his talk on elephants. Probus Club president
Paul Probert is next to them Picture: ROB KNOWLES
around 11 to 13 years of
age and their gestation
period is 22 months.
Most females are
pregnant for their entire
adult lives, producing
calves about every two
years.
Bulls stay in these
groups until they reach
puberty. Later they
wander with other bulls
and find mates from
their own groups.
Younger males do not
come into musth if
there are large adult
males in the group.
When in musth, bulls
become more
aggressive and
testosterone levels can
increase by more than
60 times.
Elephants are
successful because
they are able to draw
nutrition from almost
any plant and can
graze, browse, strip
bark and eat flowers
and fruit. However, they
are not ruminating
SUDOKU - WIN A BEAVERS VOUCHER
animals like bovine
animals, and have only
one stomach. They
therefore push through
very large quantities of
food on a daily basis.
They can even dig for
water and can modify
their environment
effectively by pushing
down trees, allowing
other animals to eat
from the top branches
as well as providing
homes for others.
They are very
protective of their
young and have a high
intelligence, smarter
than animals such as
dogs. They have few
natural enemies and are
not easily susceptible to
disease.
They live for around
60 years and die of old
age when they are no
longer able to masticate
their food. Elephants
have six sets of molars
that replace older,
ground-down or broken
teeth. They are not
susceptible to foot and
mouth so can pass
through infected areas
without transmitting the
disease. They are,
however, prone to
outbreaks of anthrax,
EMS or
Encephalomyocarditis
virus (also known as
mouse virus) and floppy
trunk syndrome, a
condition that could be
related to plant
poisoning.
“Between 1968 and
1994 the Kruger
National Park (KNP)
culled elephants as part
of its management
programme,” Bengis
said. “However, we
stopped culling
elephants in 1994 and
rather adopted a
strategy of
t ranslocation.”
Large cranes are
used to lift the larger
males and females onto
large ventilated trucks
for transport.
The entire operation
has to be completed in
the shortest time
possible to avoid
distressing the animals
too severely.
Due to the number of
elephants born in the
KNP, their numbers are
increasing faster than
they can be
translocated to other
parks and reserves.
“You can’t give away
an elephant these
d ay s , ” he said. “That is
why elephant
contraception is so
impor tant.”
SAD PART OF HISTORY: The internment camp next to old market area in
Port Alfred in 1902
Looking through graveyards
THERE is a strange
“collection mania” I
have when searching
for history in Port
Alfred.
That is to trawl the
old cemetery on the
east bank. Graveyards
are storybooks of
i n fo r m at i o n ,
particularly in the
sense of settler
histor y.
One grave, for
Casper Johan Lotter,
struck me as a
somewhat more
expensive headstone
than the other derelict
ones around this
person. Added to this,
the date, 1865-1902 –
would have put us into
the Anglo-Boer War.
Lot ter’s job description
too is weird. He was a
silversmith, noted in
SERENDIPITY
... with Bev Young
the annals of South
African silversmith
masters. He was born
in Germany and there
is no indication of a
family that I can find
here.
So the question
remains, what was he
doing here? He was so
young when he died at
37. The only
conclusion I came to
was that he was
incarcerated in the
“camps” that used to
be in the area of the
railway yards. Perhaps
he became ill? These
Anglo-Boer War
camps were a blight
on the history here.
Men and woman
were segregated, and
almost starved had it
not been for the
charity of the village
people. Mostly the
men were sent away,
to work on farms
upcountr y.
I have many more
stories of the people –
I call them “g h o st
people” who arrived
here and moved on,
leaving little of their
history with us, sadly.
An unremarkable thriller
JON HOUZET
The Girl on the Train,
with Emily Blunt,
Rebecca Ferguson,
Haley Bennett,
Justin Theroux and
Luke Evans. Directed
by Tate Taylor. 3/5
ADEQUATE as
thrillers go, The Girl
on the Train wa s
probably better as a
novel than a movie.
Although Emily
Blunt’s character is
central, it is really a
story about three
women, their
connectedness, vices,
pain and betrayal.
Blunt plays an
alcoholic divorcee,
Rachel Watson, who
spends her days
commuting by train to
a job she no longer
possesses. She
imagines the lives of
the people in the
houses they pass,
becoming fixated on
one couple in
particular, who she
imagines have a
perfect marriage.
Through flashbacks
we learn her
alcoholism existed
during her marriage,
resulting in volatile
behaviour and
embarrassment for
her husband, Tom
SOLD
HAUNTED BY THE PAST: Emily Blunt in ‘The Girl
on the Train’, now showing at Rosehill Cinema
(Justin Theroux), who
eventually left her for
their pretty blonde
estate agent, Anna
Boyd (Rebecca
Fe r g u s o n ) .
We also learn
Rachel was unable to
fall pregnant,
arousing jealousy and
longing when Tom
and Anna had a baby.
She stalked them,
at one time b e h av i n g
as if she was going to
kidnap their baby,
and has been warned
to stay away from
them.
On her daily train
rides, passing the
house of the
What’s hot or not at the box office
couple she observed
earlier, one day she is
shocked to see the
wife, Megan Hipwell
(Haley Bennett),
embracing and
kissing another man
on the balcony.
Angry at the
woman’s betrayal,
she goes on a
drinking binge and
vows to “smash her
head”. Rachel
confronts Megan in
an alley but then
blacks out and wakes
up later in her own
apartment with a
head wound.
Megan has gone
missing.
The story shifts to
CORPORATE DISPOSAL
her perspective, her
dissatisfaction with
her marriage and
sexual infidelity. Her
story is revealed in
her confessions to her
psychiatrist, Dr Kamal
Abdic (Edgar
Ramirez), who turns
out to be the man on
the balcony. But all is
not as it appears.
In another twist,
Megan works as a
nanny for Tom and
Anna, but loathes her
job and in her
conversations with
Abdic, reveals a
tragedy from her
The police come
knocking on Rachel’s
prompting her own
visits Megan’s
be a friend of his
missing wife and
identifying Abdic as
her lover.
Muddying the
waters for the police
investigation, Rachel
lurches between
drinking and trying to
stay sober, and her
own perceptions are
unravelled as the
truth is revealed.
HAPPY ASSOCIATION: Round Table treasurer Pierre Coetzer, left, and Frikkie Coetzee handed over a
cheque in the sum of R10000 to new Hospice fundraiser, Angela Hibbert, last Thursday
LOUISE KNOWLES
TWO popular events on the
Port Alfred social calendar, the
Spring Spectacular put
together by Hospice and the
101 Dance by Round Table,
clashed until a happy
coincidence brought the two
t o g e t h e r.
New Hospice fundraiser
Angela Hibbert said that
Hospice had organised the
highly successful Spring
Spectacular annually for 18
years. Thanks to Zelda Elliot
and her team of volunteers,
including Debbie Albers,
Marelieze Cawood and Linda
Lee, it had wonderful support
from its sponsors.
CANCER AWA R E N E S S
But as it had become a bit
challenging to raise
sponsorship in the current
economic climate, Hospice had
decided to cancel its Spring
Spectacular this year.
Although they were relieved
that the two big events would
no longer clash, Round Table
contacted Hospice and
suggested that they combine
events.
“Since they were no longer
having the Spring Spectacular,
we offered to hold the 101
Dance and let Hospice
benefit,” Frikkie Coetzee of
Round Table said.
The 101 Dance was held at
Halyards on August 20 and at
an auction held afterwards
they raised funds for Hospice,
which Round Table topped up
to R10000.
Coetzee said that Round
Table was looking forward to
helping Hospice raise funds in
the future.
Hibbert also said that
Hospice was looking forward
to a long association with
Round Table so that they could
continue to provide homebased
palliative care to the
communit y.
Previously, Hibbert worked
for Hospice in Grahamstown
for nine years, and was also
involved in-patient care, as
well as counselling and
bereavement. “But,” she said
“the need is for fundraising”.
The bidding has proceeded as shown above; you are North, what action do you take?
You reason as follows. The purpose of duplicate bridge is to beat all the other pairs who are play-
À
good guiding principle is to try to score +110 on every hand; if this is not possible try to score a
plus score on every hand. If you pass 1D East will surely score a plus score as you have little in the way of defensive values in
your hand and your partner did not bid. If the opponents make a plus score you are heading for a bad result. You are not able
to double for take-out because partner is likely to bid 1S. You have already passed so partner will know that you have less than
À
À
should realise that North may have only four Hearts and bid conservatively, bearing in mind North’s original pass!: with only
three card support for North’s 1H bid it would be best to pass East’s 1S rebid.
AWARDS AT VGHS
VICTORIA Girls’ High School (VGHS) has made
significant cultural and academic awards to
several of its pupils.
Headgirl Jessica Benyon has been awarded
Cultural Honours – this has been awarded only
twice in the last 15 years.
Benyon’s award is for her excellence in music
performance over a number of years. She has
played a leading role in the VGHS orchestra
with the flute, and consistently achieves
recognition from competitions in other centres.
Most recently, she was placed second in the
National Music Competition hosted by Rhodes
Universit y.
Sisters Jacqui and Lauren James received
their third re-award of Academic Honours,
something that has not occurred at VGHS in
the past 20 years. Both were also re-awarded
Cultural Colours.
Academic Colours were awarded to Benyon
(re-award), Toni Butterworth, Avela
Mantshontsho (re-award) and Danielle Walker.
HAYES AT THE BELMONT
GOLF legend Dale Hayes was the special guest
WALK/RUN FOR A CAUSE
THE organisers of the Rapportryers/PJ Olivier
5km fun run/walk on Thursday October 27
(5.30pm) at PJ Olivier on the hill are hoping to
better last year’s entry of 450. To this end, they
have once again put a freeze on entry fees. For
the last few years the fee has been R20 for
adults and R15 for school pupils, and it will
remain so this year. With the community in
mind, the organisers donate a sizeable sum of
money each year to local causes – over the
years the amount has totalled tens of
thousands of rands.
This year’s beneficiary is the
Grahamstown-based Heart Matters Pregnancy
Care Centre in Howse Street, a concerned
group of people, who counsel women with
unplanned pregnancies, also counselling and
supporting those with post-abortion syndrome.
Heart Matters is affiliated to national
organisation Africa Cares, and as such its
members have attended courses and
workshops in KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape
and Eastern Cape. Consultations are free of
charge and are strictly confidential.
POTTERING AROUND
A LOCAL publication in 1983 carried an
advertisement informing readers that
Grahamstown Potteries was changing its name
their products would be available at Town &
Country Supplies at 37 Bathurst Street.
Grahamstown Potteries were manufacturers
NEW HOUSE SYSTEM
OATLANDS Prep School’s recent intermediate
phase sports day saw pupils being placed into
the school’s new house system, one that
created a sense of camaraderie and team
spirit. I was interested in the names of the four
houses which are the names of former
Oatlands Prep principals. They are Newby
House, Baines House, Lloyd House and Walwyn
House. If you were an Oatlands Prep pupil once
upon a time, who was your principal?
Kenton Bowling Club
THE poor weather that we
have been experiencing
lately continues to affect
turnouts.
Last Wednesday, we
played the penultimate
sponsored Kenton Dias
Insurance Consultants
Jackpot Competition in
sunny but windy
conditions.
This saw 41 players take
to the greens and the day’s
winners were Rodney
Austin, Brian Aldag and
Rob Bowker, who came
home with a score of 17
points out of a possible 25,
and a shot profit of 13.
The year-to-date Jackpot
will only be available when
Addie Wolf returns from
holiday, so watch the main
notice board after his
return to see the year-todate
listing of individual
The Thursday Supa
Thursday was won by Rina
The Friday Night Draw
was well-attended, as the
cash prize was R1400.
The number 52 drawn
belonged to Ellie Prinsloo,
who was not with us so
tomorrow the draw will be
worth R1500.
Last Saturday, the Kowie
Men’s Classic was played
at Kowie but 27 of our
players turned up to play a
normal home social game
in cool, slightly windy
conditions.
We had three teams
entered in the Kowie men’s
classic out of 26 teams.
Both days were played in
cool, slightly windy
conditions, but thankfully
no rain. Results to hand
show that Kenton did not
come in the first four.
The position with the
penultimate Moore Shield
has now come available
and the last game of the
year will be played in
By all accounts, it was a
well-run, most enjoyable
tournament. Maybe more
players will enter next year.
The Kowie Men’s Classic
was played last weekend
and 28 teams participated,
... what’s happening
KOWIESTRIDERS
... runners with pride
Re s u l t s :
The intrepid walkers Carol
and Jean Nepgen have once
again spent the past two
weeks traversing the country
and racking up the
kilometres in their usual
impressive way.
On October 5, they were in
Sedgefield for the Cansa 5km
Run/Walk. Walking together
they completed the scenic
event, which took place on
the island at Sedgefield, in
0:52:21.
October 8 had Carol in
Paarl for the very tough
Paarlberg Half Marathon. The
route started in town and
took her all the way up to
Paarl Rock, then back down
again, only to be sent back
up to the Taal Monument.
Carol walked the event,
finishing in 3:00:30 as the
first female walker.
RUNNERS-UP: In second place at the Kowie Investec Men’s
Classic last weekend were the Port Elizabeth Bowling Club team
of, from left, Terry Cawood, Gary Vermaak, Robert McGregor and
Dan Thysse
Kirsten and John Hodges,
Ironing – Dave Lang.
Kowie Bowling Club
Last Tuesday, we played the
Rosehill Spar day
competition with a good
field of six rinks, mixed
fours and trips.
Rodney Gradwell and his
team of Peter Ford, Lawrie
May and visitor Peter May
were in fine form to defeat
Delene Deenik’s team 10
points + 20.
The runner-up was Siegie
Rohrs’s team of fours, who
defeated James Fox’s team
quite comprehensively and
only the winners took home
Spar vouchers on the day.
On Thursday, with there
being no sponsored
competition, we played a
Snowball, with a turnout of
five rinks.
The numbers drawn for
the competition were ends
number 3/5/12 and 20 and
the score drawn for the day
They then moved to Hout
Bay on October 9 for the
Chappies Challenge Half
Marathon and 10km. This
was another tough one with
more hills. Both races started
at the beach in Hout Bay and
then proceeded up
Chapman’s Peak Drive. After
5km of climbing, the 10km
turned back at the lookout
point, while the 21.1km
continued towards
Noordhoek before turning
back to face yet another
major climb. Jean walked the
10km, finishing in 1:40:47;
while Carol took on the half
marathon, finishing in an
excellent 2:51:23.
The past weekend saw
them head up to Randfontein
for the Jannas Athletic Club
nine-hour and 18-hour circuit
races. These events took
place over a 1000m circuit at
was six. There was great
excitement with cries of
“we’ve got it”, followed by
others thinking they had
won the snowball, but it
was not to be as there were
four teams with the score,
so it rolls over.
This week’s pot was only
for one day’s contributions,
so let it grow to something
wor thwhile.
Last weekend, we ran our
Kowie Investec Men’s
Classic and we had such a
good entry, with 26 teams
competing from all around
the district.
There were 15 Eastern
Areas teams and 11 from
out of the EA including Port
Elizabeth and East London
and various surrounding
towns, with the team from
furthest away being Bennie
de Klerk from Burgersdorp.
The grounds were really
looking good and the club
house was laid out
immaculately, as the teams
Jan Viljoen High School in
Randfontein. The nine-hour
event started at 1pm on
October 14 and ended at
10pm. The 18-hour race
started at 6pm on October 14
and ended at 12 noon on
October 15.
One can enter both races,
but then forfeit four hours of
the first event due to the
start time for the second. The
Nepgens were up for the
challenge and entered both
events, with Jean managing
to complete an impressive
51km and Carol a whopping
66km. Well done to both of
them.
On October 15 a small
group of Kowie Striders
participated in the always
popular Meiringspoort Half
Marathon. Lynette Harbrecht
and Mike Harris covered the
scenic route in a time of
started arriving. After the
welcome from president
Peter Ford, the teams were
out on the greens on
schedule and the weather
was very kind to us all
w e e ke n d .
At the end of day one,
Neil Brill’s (Old Selborians)
team led the field with
Barry van Wyk’s (Jeffreys
Bay) team in second spot
and De Klerk’s
(Burgerdorp) team in third.
On Saturday evening, the
braai fires were lit and the
500g T-bone steaks came
out. A great night was had.
Sunday dawned and the
workers started arriving at
7am to prepare for day two.
After four rounds of
competition, the results
were tallied and we were
ready for prize-giving, with
I n v e st e c ’s Kevin Chree and
Enita Dryburgh on hand to
hand out the prizes.
Prizes were handed out
to positions one to 15. Cash
prizes went to the first four
positions.
First was Neil Brill’s (Old
Selbornians) team on 36
points, second Gary
Ve r m a a k ’s (Port Elizabeth
Club) team on 31 points,
third Gerald Fletcher’s
(Hofmeyr) team on 30
points, and fourth Bennie
be Klerk’s (Burgersdorp)
team, also on 30 points,
Alex v Port Alfred fishing competition
THE annual rock and surf
fishing competition
between the Port Alfred
Ski-boat Club (PARSC) and
Alexandria Fishing Club
took place last Saturday.
PARSC Rock and Surf
section chairman Gary du
Randt said weather
conditions were not kind,
even though the sea looked
a little flat and the water
temperature was not too
cold.
“Each year we alternate
the area and it was fished
on our coast from Fish
River to Kleinemonde
We st , ” Du Randt said.
“We had a fair
attendance from both sides
with Alex having 19 anglers
and PARSC Rock and Surf
having a few more.”
A total of 89.1kg of fish
was caught with a 100%
release rate, for which
anglers were
c o n g r at u l at e d .
“We caught five different
species on the day and
Port Alfred Rock and Surf
team won the day and took
the floating trophy back
where it belongs,” Du
Randt said.
At the prize-giving, the
trophy was handed over
and the best catches on
both sides were mentioned.
Biggest in the species are
as follows: kob – 1.3kg
Kallie (Alex), Andre (Alex),
1.9kg Dave (PA); black
musselcracker – 4.4kg
Charl (Alex), 1.9kg Adrian
Fresh Stop Port Alfred
Mixe d
October 15: Mainly
overcast, warmer and
light westerly winds
provided a better day to
be on the golf course
than experienced of
late, but with many of
our women’s section
travelling to East
London for a
tournament and many
more regulars away
from Port Alfred, only 15
players entered the
weekly mixed two-tocount
stableford
alliance.
The field was divided
into five, mixed threeballs.
Despite the relatively
benign conditions, it
took just 84 points to
win the competition for
Lizzie Lambrechts,
Barrie Brady and Terry
Harris. Andy Manson
and Dee and Cecil
Jones-Phillipson came
home second with 82.
Seventy-four points
paved the way for Mo
Marsay, Fanie Smit and
Martin Lambrechts to
receive the customary
energy drinks for
coming bottom of the
points list. Maureen
to shooting a good nett
Bruce Smith birdied
the eighth and won a
this hole. Barrie Brady
shot a well-played nett
KGB Results
Tuesday October 11: A
sunny morning dawned
for the 31 players who
were drawn into seven
four-balls and one
three-ball.
Unfor tunately,
westerly winds became
increasingly strong
throughout the
morning, making play
difficult in the usual
two-to-count stableford
alliance format chosen.
The covey of John
Abbott, Martin
Lambrechts, Peter
Longhurst and John
Muggeridge seemed to
feel the effect of the
gale the least, as they
carded an excellent 93
points to run away from
the rest of the field.
Second-placed
Wilton Adcock, Chris
Niebieszczanski, Mike
Stadler and George
Lake were five points
behind on 88.
Tommy Meyer, Matt
Chadwick and Terry
Harris found the going
very difficult, as missed
opportunities flattened
their score to 71 + 5 =
76 – the lowest of the
morning’s proceedings
and earner of the
notorious Hamer en
Sukkel trophy.
Two clubs were holed
by John Abbott (sixth),
Wilton Adcock and
Johny Johnston
(eighth). The best nett
scores were shot by
Mike Stadler (68) and
Neil Loundar (69).
Friday October 14:
Despite close to galeforce
easterly winds, 34
players turned out to
play the customary
two-to-count stableford.
The field was drawn
into two three-balls and
seven four-balls.
The three-ball of
Tommy Meyer, Graham
Findlay and N Hopkins
carded 80 + 5 = 85
points to win the
competition. Dale
Wisener, Ray Hicks,
Martin Lambrechts and
Dave Broedelet came
home second with 83.
The Hamer and
Sukkel was awarded to
Wilton Adcock, Chris
Niebieszczanski, Cliff
Roberts and John
Muggeridge, whose 74
hit the bottom of the
points list.
Par three two-clubs
were holed by Ray
(sixth), Barrie Brady
(eighth) and Eric
Segers (11th). Barrie
had a great day, with a
superb nett 65.
Nemato Change a Life
rowers record club bests,
as gymnasts raise the bar
Rowing Club
NEMATO Change a Life (NCAL)
participated with four teams at a
long-distance rowing competition in
the Durban harbour.
The boys received silver and bronze
out of 25 participating teams, and
NCAL founder Jan Blom said a big
“Well done guys”.
The group also did a little
sightseeing, with visits to the Moses
Mabhida Stadium and the beach.
Blom said NCAL has a strong
rowing team this year. On the
ergometers, seven new club bests
were recorded.
Siphosethu Nazo improved the
seven strokes in the U15 age group,
Thando Ngoqo improved the 2000m,
5000m and one-hour in U16 and
Mzwebhongo Mbendeni improved the
seven strokes, 2000m and 5000m in
the U19.
For the first time in its 10 years of
existence, the rowing club is now
able to transport its own boats to
competitions. After the donation last
year of the Quantum minibus by the
Mike Thomson Change a Life Trust
and Alexander van Assendelft, the
Eastern Cape Rowing Association
(ECRA) recently gave the club the
use of their small boat trailer.
“We must thank all the clubs that
always tried to help us with space on
their boat trailers or allowing us to
use their boats at the competitions,”
Blom said. “But what a pleasure to
have our own boats at the
competitions. No more competing in
Gymnastics Club
The second Eastern Cape
Gymnastics Trials were highly
successful for NCAL. Senior gymnast
Siphamandla Baku was the only
gymnast to jump a triffis mount
(triple front flip with half-turn) on the
double mini trampoline.
Onke Mangele, in the age group
15-16, finished an incredibly difficult
trampoline routine starting with a
t riffis.
“Nobody in the province, not even
the seniors, come anywhere close to
his [level of] difficulty,” Blom said.
“Liyema Nxobo, with lower
difficulty but high precision and no
mistakes, won the trampoline and the
double mini-trampoline, showing his
readiness for international
competition. Siyabulela Siwa (13-14)
and Khanyile Mbolekwa (11-12) are far
ahead in their age groups in the
province. Our gymnasts who are not
at international level also did well
and we expect most of them to
qualify for national championships.”
Mangele became African Junior
Champion on the double minitrampoline
in Namibia. It was the
first time NCAL members went to a
continental championships and they
are very proud to have an African
Champion at the gymnastics club.
There are many
age-group categories.
Siwa, who replaced injured Nxobo
on trampoline, made it all the way to
a sixth place in the finals and also
won the bronze team medal on
trampoline. Baku participated on
as senior on the double mini
trampoline. The Eastern Cape
Academy of Sport (ECAS)
offered NCAL gymnasts a
training camp in Port
Elizabeth to prepare for the
upcoming national
championships and
international competitions.
“We went with 12
g y m n a st s , ” explained Blom.
“Injuries and the pressure of
top level gymnastics are
taking toll on some of our
gymnasts, but we are hoping to
come back with some medals
from the top competitions. Many
thanks to ECAS for making this
camp possible.”
Blom said the successes of
the gymnastics club were
achieved under very poor
conditions.
“We have no gymnastics
hall, no double minitrampoline,
no tumbling
track and no coach. All we
have is a great trampoline
donated by the Lotto and
help from international top
coach Lee Budler in Port
Elizabeth. “If the gymnasts
can achieve so much, what
will happen if we can offer
good facilities? President of
the South African Sports
Confederation and Olympic
Committee (Sascoc), Gideon
Sam, has recognised the
potential of our club and is
committed to helping us with a
gymnastics centre,” Blom said..
Our local municipality has
allocated land for it and we
are working on the preparation of the
land, before building can start. We
are also hoping to be able to employ
Lee as the head coach of the
gymnastics centre,” he said.
