Awards for Ndlambe
Municipality recognised for improved audit and housing development
ROB KNOWLES
I
T IS almost the
end of Ndlambe
mayor Phindile
Fa x i ’s first 100
days in office and,
having asked for
this time to get his
plans for the
municipality in
order, he was able
to boast two
prestigious awards
made to Ndlambe at
the open council
meeting on Monday.
The first award was
from the office of the
auditor-general (AG),
who issued a
certificate to the
Ndlambe Municipality
for the most improved
audit results for the
financial year 2014-15.
In the previous year,
Ndlambe was given a
disclaimer, meaning
the AG could not
complete his audit as
there were too many
anomalies in the
figures presented.
In the 2014-15 AG
report, Ndlambe
attained a qualified
audit, meaning that,
while there were
several items (such as
unaccounted for and
irregular expenditure)
that remain to be fixed,
the audit report was a
marked improvement
on the previous year.
“I cannot take credit
for the work done by
the previous mayor,
Sipho Tandani, and his
team, but it is a good
start for my term in
of f i c e , ” said Faxi.
He said he and his
team were working
hard to receive an
unqualified audit for
the 2015-16 financial
y e a r.
In spite of numerous
problems before work
began, the
Kenton-on-Sea housing
project was also given
an award for the
outstanding work
carried out in building
55 completed houses
at Ekuphumleni
township, an area
named “New Town” by
the residents. The
ultimate goal is to
complete 565 houses.
“We received the
award for the speed as
well as the quality of
work in completing the
houses at Kenton,”
municipal spokesman
Cecil Mbolekwa said.
“The level of
cooperation between
the district department
of human settlements
and the
municipalit y
was held as an
exemplar to
ot h e r
municipalities
and, for that
reason, we
were awarded
the Govan
Mbeki award.
“We have also found
that we can resolve
issues raised on site
without any work
stoppages, and that is
what made it possible
to complete the 55
homes in record time.”
The Kenton
development had been
a sore point for
residents for years
before the project
‘We received the award
for the speed as well as
the quality of work in
completing the houses’
actually began, with
community members
staging protests on
several occasions in
an attempt to get the
project underway.
Community leaders
wanted to know why
construction work had
not started at Kenton
while other projects in
Alexandria, Port Alfred
and Nemato were
u n d e r way.
A total of 20
houses were
handed over to
residents in July,
with the
remaining 35
houses handed
over on
September 27.
Ndlambe is now
hoping to win similar
awards for the project
at provincial level as
well as at national
level.
PROUD MOMENTS: Ndlambe Municipality proudly display their accomplishments at the open council meeting on Monday,
including the Govan Mbeki award for the housing development at Kenton-on-Sea and the auditor-general’s award for the
most improved municipality with respect to the 2014-15 audit report. Municipal manager Rolly Dumezweni, left, holds the
AG’s award and certificate while ANC councillor Monica Mateti, centre, and mayor Phindile Faxi show off the Govan Mbeki
award and certificate
HELP IS ON THE WAY:
Pupils ham it up as
the ‘victims’ of a bus
accident on Port
Alfred’s Nico Malan
Bridge, a simulation
to test coordinated
rescue response
efforts in times of
JON HOUZET
A S I M U L AT E D
disaster on the
Nico Malan Bridge
last Friday to test
coordinated rescue
response had residents
and commuters
thinking a real accident
had occurred.
The scenario was a
head-on collision
between a fuel tanker
and a bus filled with
pupils. SAPS and
Ndlambe traffic
department cordoned
off the bridge at the
traffic lights and the
Pascoe Crescent
intersection, and set up
a joint operations
centre to coordinate
rescue efforts.
Traffic was diverted
along Pascoe Crescent
and Main Street, the
congestion adding a
dimension of reality to
the simulation. The rain
also became a factor.
The wreck of an old
bus proved useful to
stage the “accident”,
and one of Ndlambe’s
water tankers served as
the vehicle carrying
“flammable material”.
ON THE DOUBLE: NSRI volunteers transfer a ‘victim’ to a waiting
ambulance
Pictures: JON HOUZET
The bus had been
abandoned in Nemato
and was a bane in the
life of residents, who
complained it was used
as a hangout by
vagrants and criminals.
They were happy to see
it removed and put to
good use.
Pupils from local
schools were recruited
to play the bus accident
victims, and were
especially made up to
appear to have certain
injuries, making for an
early grisly Halloween.
They played their
parts enthusiastically,
some lying in the road
and others on the bus,
moaning and wailing.
Four Stenden South
Africa students
volunteered to play
pupils thrown from the
bus into the Kowie
River, although the
simulation only required
them to begin floating
from the Port Alfred
Ski-boat Club jetty on
the incoming tide. All
wore lifejackets.
Fire and rescue
vehicles quickly
appeared, with
firefighters tackling the
“blazing” tanker and
scattered fires while
paramedics and
ambulance assistants
from the provincial
ambulance service,
Gardmed and Holistic
EMS tended to the
victims.
REALISTIC SCENARIO:
Firefighters work to
free an ‘injured’ pupil
trapped on the bus
Within 14 minutes,
NSRI volunteers had
responded in their
rescue craft to locate
and pick up the four
students floating in the
Kowie River.
Ndlambe
Municipalit y’s river
patrol craft assisted.
An ambulance was
dispatched to pick up
the victims from the
NSRI at their jetty.
After dousing the
“blaze”, firefighters
used the jaws of life to
free a pupil “t rapped”
on the bus.
Pupils were assigned
cards detailing their
specific “injur y” which
paramedics had to
evaluate to determine
emergency care and
treatment at the
also included in the
exercise.
MultiSecurity and
Kowie Towing also
provided assistance in
the simulation, and
Stenden’s disaster
management students
obser ved.
The simulation was
overseen by officials
from Sarah Baartman
District Municipality as
part of the International
Strategy for Disaster
Reduction, a global
framework established
within the United
Nations to promote
action to reduce social
vulnerability and risks
of natural hazards and
related technological
and environmental
d i s a st e r s .
“They had been
planning it for about
three months,” said
independent evaluator
Patrick Macfarlane, who
evaluated rescue
response during the
s i m u l at i o n .
Macfarlane, who has
been involved in
disaster management
since the ’80s, said it
was a successful
exercise.
“I’m very pleased
with how it went.
Everyone worked
together well,” he said.
“There were
shortcomings obviously,
but that’s why we need
these exercises and we
learn from them. It’s
been a long time since
there was an exercise in
Ndlambe.”
About 100 personnel
were involved in the
s i m u l at i o n .
Sarah Baartman and
Ndlambe informed
Murray &Roberts about
the plan and they came
to the table by
removing stop-and-gos
on the R72 that day, to
ease traffic flow.
The biggest gripe,
when locals learnt it
was just an exercise,
was about being
inconvenienced by
congestion in Friday
and month-end traffic.
Fishtory throws line in sea
of ‘citizen science’ data
LOUISE KNOWLES
A NEW project to
gather data on
historical fish stocks is
depending on local
anglers, ocean
enthusiasts and other
potential citizen
scientists to contribute
photographs and
i n fo r m at i o n .
The Fishtory research
team of Prof Warren
Potts and Tanith Grant
from Rhodes University
invited all with
photographs and
stories to share to a
meeting at the Port
Alfred River and
Ski-boat Club last
T h u r s d ay.
Researchers cannot
collect and kill fish for
information and it is
necessary to gather
information through
“citizen science”,
particularly as Fishtory
is not government
funded.
Local angler Wade
Labuschagne
contributed an angling
magazine dated 1963
and photos of fish his
grandfather, Eldred
Bradfield, caught as a
young boy, which Grant
scanned onto the
d at a b a s e .
There are about
850 000 anglers in
South Africa. If they
each catch five fish a
year at an average size
of 1kg it adds up to
4250 tons a year. It is
more than 29 inshore
hake trawlers which
catch 2390 tons of
hake in a year.
“R e c r e at i o n a l
fishermen have a
greater impact on fish
stocks than people
realise,” Potts said.
When commercial
fishermen see that the
stocks are going down,
they stop fishing until
the stocks recover.
But recreational
anglers may notice that
fish stocks have
decreased or fish sizes
have decreased, and yet
continue to fish. As a
result, fish stocks may
continue to decrease.
In the mid-’90s,
popular recreational
fish like the dusky kob
declined by 25% and
shad between 25% and
40% in a year.
Since then, these fish
stocks may have
declined still further.
Bronze beam and
poenskop have never
been assessed.
In some places the
fishermen may get
together and agree to
stop fishing in a certain
area for a certain length
of time, until the fish
stocks have recovered.
It is important to
research fish stocks
because of the
cont ribution
recreational fishing
makes to the local
economy in terms of
jobs, fishing charters
and licences in small
towns like Port Alfred.
CatchReport allows
fishermen to log, track
and share their catches.
This information goes
onto a national
database to give a clear
picture of South Africa’s
marine ecosystem.

Art Fair adds colour to Bathurst
ROB KNOWLES
THE village of Bathurst
played host to the
Bathurst Art Fair (BAF)
last weekend,
promoting the work of
various artists, along
with unique locations
and the village itself.
In a “labour of love”,
event organiser
Tharine de Vos worked
extremely hard to get
the event up and
going and, despite the
rain on Saturday,
managed to produce a
show that should have
made all Bathurstians
proud of their village.
The weekend began
with the opening of
the Engage Art Centre,
formerly the Wiles
Gallery. This
prestigious building
was the home of local
artist, the late Jane
Wiles.
New owners, Anton
and Lynn Foster have
big plans for the new
Exhibits, music and town treasures had all enthralled
Engage Arts Centre
including a studio and
workshop, and a tea
garden and coffee
shop, allowing visitors
time to sit and relax
and enjoy the artwork
on display.
Juan Pretorius has
been commissioned to
design the new
building and gave a
presentation to those
present.
Curators of the
gallery, Andre and
Cindi Roodt, said they
were very pleased
with the number of
people who attended
the event.
Then, on Saturday,
the art fair proper got
underway. With 22
venues spread over
the length and breadth
of the village, artists
from the Eastern Cape
and further afield set
up their artwork at
various locations
around the village,
allowing visitors to not
only check out the art
itself but also the
significance of the
l o c at i o n .
Such venues
included the
Agricultural Museum,
Village Green, The Pig
and Whistle pub and
ot h e r Bathurst spots.
But, this was not
just about art, and
there were also many
games set up for the
benefit of the children,
including Chalk the
Walk, a treasure hunt
and more.
On Sunday, with the
rain having stopped,
there was another day
of entertainment and,
as the sun dried out
the remaining
puddles, more people
began to explore the
village and appreciate
the spirit that
characterises it.
On Sunday
afternoon, there was
an auction and a show
at the 60s Pub and
Grub. The auction was
ably handled by Peter
Mosley, and at least
20% of the takings will
be donated to the
SPCA.
This was followed by
an open mic set and
the operatic stylings of
88-year-old soprano,
Rene Solomon,
accompanied by Meryl
The Sunday evening
ended with the BAF
60s Halloween party.
“A rainy day is not
an auspicious start to
an Art Fair, yet we are
proud of our results,”
commented De Vos.
“As with the BAF
heartening to see that
people are willing to
embrace seeing, doing
and experiencing
something different.”
MORE THAN JUST PAINTING: Artist, Sue Hoppe, displayed her artwork at
the Bathurst Arts Fair on Saturday. Hoppe not only paints but has also
generated a line of cards and published coffee table books, which she
also displayed at the workshop
Showing from Friday 4 November - Thursday 10 November
FULL HOUSE: More than 120 people attend a meeting held by members of the Eastern Cape legislature about the new Project Masiphathisane, which
ROB KNOWLES
MEMBERS of the
Eastern Cape
legislature came to
town to present a new
provincial and national
initiative, titled Project
Masiphathisane, at the
Port Alfred Civic
Centre last Friday.
Eastern Cape Office
of the Premier
r e p r e s e n t at i v e ,
Zandisile Qupe,
chaired the meeting,
and was accompanied
by other provincial
of f i c e r s .
Qupe said the
initiative was
originally implemented
in KwaZulu-Natal in an
effort to combat the
HIV/Aids epidemic in
the province.
Its “War Room”
approach to fight the
disease produced
resounding results to
contain and reduce
the impact of the
disease.
“Subsequently, the
model was adopted in
order to fast-track
service delivery across
all government
functions and is now
being adopted
n at i o n a l l y, ” Qupe said.
“The
M a s i p h at h i s a n e
Project is a
coordinated and
integrated service
delivery model of
action to address the
empowerment of
youth and women and
social ills within
various communities.
“Its intention is to
bring government to
the people.”
The ward-based
initiative is intended to
aggressively change
behaviour and will be
vigorously
implemented using
the existing cadres to
focus their efforts on
crime, adolescent
health, sexual
behaviour, substance
abuse, road accidents
and general abuse.
At ward level, the
idea is for the ward
committee to meet
with all community
structures in the ward
including civil society
leaders, faith-based
organisations, the
private sector and
local business,
traditional leaders, as
well as key sector
leaders such as
health, safety and
security, education,
social development
and municipal services.
These members will
meet in the
established “Wa r
Rooms” to hammerout
solutions to
problems highlighted
during door-to-door
interviews with
constituents, as well
as at community
meetings.
Fieldworkers will
also be appointed to
carry out individual
interviews, and then
repor t-back based on
their findings.
Wards will report
back to the mayor and
the mayor, in turn, will
report back to the
p r e m i e r.
The premiers will
then report back to
national government,
which will coordinate
national programmes
to resolve issues at
local (ward) level.
OPINION
D i s a s te r
s i m u l at i o n
well done
THERE was a bit of excitement in town
last Friday when Sarah Baartman District
Municipality and Ndlambe Municipality
held a disaster management simulation
on the Nico Malan Bridge to test the
effectiveness of local rescue response.
The scenario was a head-on collision
between a fuel tanker and a bus filled
with school pupils, some of whom were
“thrown” into the Kowie River.
It was impressive watching the
coordinated emergency response by the
Ndlambe fire department, traffic
department, SAPS, the provincial
ambulance service and two private
ambulance services, the NSRI,
MultiSecurity and Kowie Towing.
In spite of a late start, and the onset of
rain, it all seemed to go down very well.
In fact, the rain added another element to
the exercise, as we cannot expect that
accidents will happen in ideal weather.
There was some rubbernecking by
locals who thought a real accident had
taken place, and anxious questions and
speculation on Facebook, someone even
suggesting it was a movie shoot.
I noticed a drone with a camera flying
overhead while I was taking photographs,
and thought it was a very smart move by
the simulation organisers to get overhead
footage of the exercise, or just a lucky
break for a local photographer!
When our Facebook readers were
informed that it was a disaster simulation
rather than a real accident, there was
moaning and griping from a few people
about the inconvenience of traffic being
diverted along Pascoe Crescent and Main
Street, and the resulting congestion,
especially with big trucks going through
town.
Indeed, it was Friday traffic at the
month-end, so probably even more traffic
than normal, but let’s give credit to the
authorities for having this in mind when
they planned the exercise.
Murray &Roberts especially removed its
stop and go’s along the R72 that day to
ease traffic flow.
And just like the rain that fell, we
cannot expect that traffic will be light as a
breeze in a real disaster scenario. As
another poster on Facebook said, in a real
accident situation, if your children were
on the bus, the last thing you would be
concerned about is motorists being
inconvenienced by slow-moving traffic.
There was another bit of irony towards
the end of the simulation, when a four-car
blue light brigade, led by a marked
Hawks vehicle, forced their way through
the traffic barricade at the robots until
they realised they would not get through
the “accident scene” and had to turn
around and follow the diverted traffic.
That was good for a chuckle.
Question: Tell us about your job.
Answer: I’m a self-unemployed
serial designer and inventor.
Q: What made you get into that
line of work?
A: Being unemployable and having
a brain that works like a
“kaleidoscope” (apparently!).
Q: Describe the most memorable
experience that you have had in
your line of work.
A: Completing something with a
successful end result.
Q: What do you do
to unwind when you
are not working?
A: Find other things
to do, or vegetate with
a good book or bad
movie.
Q: What is your
motto in life?
A: Live in hope.
Q: What makes you
happy?
A: Being empowered.
Q: What makes you
angr y?
A: People, especially
insecure people who
are harmful to good,
solid people.
Q: What do you think about the
youth of South Africa? Do you have
any advice for them?
A: I think the youth are at risk of
becoming spoilt, self-entitled
individuals, who do not know the
meaning of “earning” respect, which
also ties in with empathy for others.
If respect, awareness of the worth of
discipline and appreciation for
self-worth through “earning” is not
learnt as a child, when will one ever
learn it? All this current indulgence
in protecting the self with
mollycoddling runs the risk of
creating a generation of narcissists.
Q: What do you like most about
B at h u r s t ?
A: The sense of community and
acceptance.
Q: If you could change one thing
about Bathurst ...
A: As with anywhere, I would
change the behaviour of
self-important, self-serving and
sanctimonious idiots that know how
to manipulate under the guise of the
greater good.
Q: What is your
favourite music of all
A: Indie rock.
Q: Who would you
like to take on
A: I don’t even
understand the
question; if it’s a reality
show, I’d run (haha) a
mile ...
Q: Three wishes for
South Africa ...
A: That the value of
being politically correct
is rediscovered as a
point of avoiding preconceived ideas
and opinions, as opposed to
promoting the lack of responsibility
and accountability; that there is
greater transparency in agendas, as
opposed to those that piggy back on
the guise of the greater good, yet
only have their own portfolio and
egos as a priority for concern; and
that those who want to create a
greater good are identified and given
the opportunity to be the best they
can be, while those that want to ride
the wave of self-serving idiocy, get
exposed.
Port Alfred
BUSINESSFORUM
Lew Geffen graces Sotheby’s Sapphire awards
JON HOUZET
S OT H E B Y ’S in Port Alfred scored a
coup by having Lew Geffen Sotheby’s
International Realty chairman Lew
Geffen, his wife, Sandy, and daughter
Yael visit for their regional Sapphire
awards event at MyPond Hotel last
T h u r s d ay.
S ot h e by ’s Port Alfred also recently
changed hands with Ndlambe
newcomer Wayne Bushell taking over
as franchise owner.
Longtime franchisee Heather Tyson
will stay on as an estate agent, and is
looking forward to having less
responsibility and more time with her
grandchildren.
“I took a 10-year licence that expired
on September 12,” Tyson said, adding
that Sotheby’s head office had tried to
convince her to extend it.
“But I managed to find a buyer in
Wayne, who is very much a corporate
man. I think he’s going to lift us to
MOST people will rather choose
to avoid any question starting
with the words “What if ....”
Why would they react that
way? Yes, most of us would
prefer not to hear the actual
reply, as it could mean that we
need to start facing reality.
Unfortunately, the greater
majority would prefer to think
that “it” can only happen to
other people.
I am sorry to burst your
bubble, but it certainly can
happen to you.
Let’s start with the first and
also the most certain of all
possibilities. What if I die today?
Now please give this some
careful thought and answer
yourself with complete honesty.
another level,” Tyson said.
“I’ll stay on as an agent till I die.”
Bushell said he heard about the
franchise opportunity from his brother.
“I came from a long stint [eight
years] in Nigeria where I was
managing director of a properties and
facilities management company,” he
said.
“I’ve been in property since 1999 –
the commercial property industry –
and before that the oil industry for 16
years.
“I wasn’t familiar with Port Alfred.
The big plus to me was the
opportunity to be in property and par t
of a great brand. And coming from a
salaried position to be entrepreneurial.
I took over on October 1.”
He said Tyson’s experience would
be valuable.
“She’s well known and liked and
very familiar in the residential sector.”
Asked what new ideas he had,
Bushell said he would like for
I can assure you most people
have never given this matter
any careful thought at all.
Let us try and help you with
some serious questions that
might arise:
ý Will my family/dependants
have sufficient funds to
continue the lifestyle that they
have grown accustomed to?
ý Will my children still be
able to continue their
university/college studies if I
am no longer there to cover the
expense?
ý Will my family be forced to
sell the family home – or will
the bank repossess it, if they
can no longer afford to pay
the monthly bond
i n st a l m e n t s ?
ý How will my family be
able to settle all my
outstanding debts?
ý Will there be sufficient
cash in my estate to settle
the estate duties with SARS or
will they be forced to sell my
property to settle it?
ý Will there be sufficient
cash on hand to pay for my
funeral or will my loved ones be
running all over to borrow
money from relatives and
friends to obtain the funds to be
able to lay me to rest in a
Catch up with what’s happening on the PA business front
S ot h e by ’s to be more visibly
represented throughout the franchise.
“We ’re strong in Port Alfred, but not
so much in other areas like Kenton.
We need to spread our visibility for
brand recall and continue the good
work of Heather, of course.”
He said he was delighted by Lew
G e f fe n ’s visit.
“His being here demonstrates the
importance of the franchise. It’s a
tribute to Heather’s work.”
Tyson said Geffen had last visited 10
years ago when she took over the
franchise. His wife Sandy visited two
years ago and it was the first visit for
daughter Yael.
Geffen said: “I came here to see
what was going on, to be hands on, to
see how wonderful it has become. The
difference is mind-boggling. The spirit
of the people is so dedicated to the
S ot h e by ’s brand – it makes me
proud.”
What if I die? That’s the question
Ensure your family is provided for in case of death
MONEY
M AT T E R S
... with Nico Human
dignified way?
One can add quite a few more
questions to the list above. The
saying goes that there are only
two certainties in life – and
those are death and taxes. So
the fact is not IF I die, but
WHEN I die.
Other scary questions that
one should consider are:
JOINING THE FOLD: New Sotheby’s Port Alfred franchise owner Wayne
Bushell, left, with Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty chairman Lew
Geffen and his wife, Sandy, at the regional Sapphire awards event at
MyPond Hotel last week
Picture: JON HOUZET
What happens if I
become temporarily or
permanently disabled and
cannot work to earn an
income? Please, again refer
to questions one to four
above and give yourself
some honest answers.
What if you suffer a serious
illness or trauma? I can assure
you there is no time to wait for
a financial institution to
consider a loan application
when you or one of your loved
one is admitted to the trauma
unit of a hospital awaiting the
funds to pay for open heart
surgery – or for any other
serious condition.
What if ...I discover at
retirement that my company
pension scheme does not
provide me with sufficient
income to be able to survive?
As recommended on several
occasions, it has become an
absolute necessity to appoint
an honest, reliable and fully
qualified financial adviser to
assist you to eliminate all these
fears from your list.
For absolute peace of mind
regarding your and your family’s
financial future, call us on office
number 087-805-7712 for a
confidential appointment or
BIG JOB: Workers salvaging the enormous logs
from the Kiperousa
A young wreck
EVEN modern technology is helpless at times
when confronted by the terrifying channel that
runs up the coastline from Alexandria to the
Fish River.
The slightest “blink” in concentration, a lack
of equipment, and rough conditions have
proved treacherous for many vessels, with in
excess of 82 shipwrecks recorded here.
In 2005, the Kiperousa (Kapodistrias), a bulk
carrier was stranded northeast of Port Alfred at
the coordinates 33°20'S 27°25'E/33.333°S
27.417°E/-33.333; 27.417.
It was next door to Hamburg.
The story goes that the ship “slipped” into
this channel, and was grounded on a gigantic
rock, from where it was unable to move in any
direction, other than around and around like a
spinning top.
I was able to visit the site and it was utterly
amazing, this helpless carrier looking like a toy.
No lives were lost, however for the
community as far as East London, the
enormous wooden logs that spilled off the craft
were a hazardous enemy. Many of these logs
ended up on beaches, although the bulk were
gathered and sold off at auction.
One of the logs believed to be from the
Kiperousa floated ashore in Port Alfred years
later, and was salvaged by two local men and
can be found next to the children’s play park in
IT’S a busy Saturday this week, with several exciting
events taking place. First is the Christian Men’s
AN ultimatum has been given to students of Rhodes
University to either sit their exams now, or apply to
However, they have been warned that there will be
no supplementary exams for those who do not pass
WHILE all the national news is focused on the
release of the public protector’s report on state
capture, former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela
said the report is final and there is no legal reason
for its release to be delayed. Following Tuesday’s
High Court ruling where judge president Dunstan
Mlambo struck off the roll the application by
co-operative governance minister Des Van Rooyen to
interdict the report for lack of urgency, on
Wednesday President Jacob Zuma also withdrew his
application to interdict the release of the report. The
High Court also permitted opposition parties who
had initially applied to oppose the president’s
application to join in the matter. Zuma maintains he
did not have sufficient time to respond to questions
posed by the former public protector on his
relationship with the Gupta family.
PETROL has increased, but the rand remains
strangely stable during this period of political
uncertainty. In fact, Brent Crude has relinquished its
$50+ a barrel position and has dropped below R48 a
in brackets to compare against, the Rand was
trading at R13.43/$ (R11.05), R16.47/£ (R17.62) and
DEEPEST sympathy and special thoughts to the
IT was with sadness we heard of the death of Pete
Burns last week, the lead singer of the pop group
Dead or Alive. Who could forget the hit singles, Yo u
Spin Me Round (Like a Record) and Brand New
Lover? Reporter Rob Knowles went to school with
Burns in the 1970s, and remembered him as a
strange and quiet boy. After his pop success he
underwent a lot of plastic surgery which, it is
reported, he later regretted. Cheers Pete, you
definitely made a mark in the hearts of a lot of fans.
TODAY (Thursday) is the first day of the first test
down under between the Proteas and Australia at
the Waca in Perth. Good luck to the boys.
AND, while we congratulate the Proteas, it’s
commiserations to Orlando Pirates who went down
6-1 to SuperSport United on Tuesday evening. This
could be their greatest margin of defeat ever.
THOUGHT for the week: “Do not spoil what you
have by desiring what you have not; remember
that what you now have was once among the
things you only hoped for”.
BEST regards as always,
Showered in accolades
NDLAMBE mayor Phindile Faxi
said that in the first 100 days of
the new council, the
municipality had been
“showered in accolades”, and
according to him, is one of the
most successful in the country.
He reported on the two water
pumps the late Derek Victor
had donated to the municipality
to be used in cases of flooding
in the Medolino Valley, and
thanked the Victor family for
the legacy he left.
“I want to make sure we are
able to include these in our
asset register and pay for the
maintenance of them,” Fa x i
said.
Faxi mentioned the two
awards won recently (see our
front page story) as well as the
successful youth camps held at
Green Fountain Farm.
100 days ‘showered in accolades’
Leaders need to lead
“The auditor-general has told
us the leaders of the
municipality must take
cont rol,” said Faxi, who went on
to say he was concerned and
that the various directors must
now visit service delivery
points so they can see for
themselves what the people’s
grievances are.
“People need to see you,”
said Faxi.
Over time
Concern was raised at the high
cost of overtime being claimed.
“Why are the overtime
figures so high? Over
R2.3-million over three
months,” asked DA councillor
Genevieve Cannon. Figures in
Canine parvovirus outbreak in PA area
THERE have been reports of
an outbreak of canine
parvovirus infection in dogs
in the Port Alfred area.
CPV infection is a
worldwide, highly contagious
disease, which is very
resilient and can survive in
the environment for extended
periods.
Dogs contract the virus when
they ingest it in contaminated
food or water.
Any unvaccinated dog is at risk
for acquiring CPV, but illness is
more prevalent in puppies
between six weeks and six
months of age, and in certain
the agenda indicated July
overtime expenditure to be
Faxi replied that the issue
of overtime needed to be
addressed in upcoming
strategy plans.
Debt collection
Municipal manager Rolly
Dumezweni said that the debt
collection process followed
provincial structures and was
taking far too long.
Debt collection agency Revco
had made a presentation to the
municipality and was
expediting the recovery
DA councillor Ray Schenk
Faxi also insisted that the
directors submit their strategy
plans, as he had requested.
ANC councillor Thembani
eyesore,” said Faxi. “It needs to
be renovated.”
He also said cattle on the
roads presented considerable
danger to motorists as well as
pedestrians. DA councillor Phil
Khani said councillors should
have spoken to their wards on
this issue.
D o n at i o n s
The Department of Sport,
CPV is a very difficult
condition to treat and has a
high mortality rate, even with
the most aggressive treatment
p r ot o c o l s .
The virus also affects the
heart muscle in very young
puppies, leading to cardiac
arrest and death.
Tr e at m e n t often involves
hospitalisation and can be very
c o st l y.
The best way to prevent CPV
infection is to vaccinate puppies.
Veterinarians use different
vaccination protocols depending
on geographical location and the
prevalence of the disease.
Recreation, Arts and Culture
(DSRAC) donated R100000 to
purchase equipment.
Further, two youths from
Ndlambe have won a DJ
competition and have been
invited to perform in Belgium.
As the trip will cost around
R60 000 each, the municipality
donated R5000 to each of them
to assist in attending the
competition.
Dress code
EFF councillor Linda Shahzad
was disciplined by acting
speaker Monica Mateti for not
conforming to the municipal
dress code. However, after
proceedings had begun, ANC
councillor Nosicelo Xhasa
entered the council chambers
wearing a bright green-andgold
dress and scarf very
similar to the ANC’s colours. No
comment was made by the
speaker on that occasion.
Typically, puppies get their first
vaccinations at six weeks of age,
then boosters at nine and 12
weeks, and annually thereafter.
Puppies that have not yet
received a full set of puppy
vaccinations should not be
allowed in public areas, where
they can be exposed to strange,
potentially infected dogs.
Disinfection of the environment
(dog houses, floors, etc) with
bleach is recommended if one or
more dogs within a household
contract CPV. The rest of the dogs
should be vaccinated immediately.
Consult your veterinarian if you
suspect CPV in your dog.
OUT ON THE TOWN
When cancer
strikes a child
LOUISE KNOWLES
A MOTHER told of a family’s
anguish and determination when
her two-year-old daughter was
diagnosed with cancer two years
ago.
Speaking at the Sunshine
Coast Hospice’s National Breast
Cancer Awareness event at the
Port Alfred River and Ski-boat
Club last Wednesday, Danel
Pruissen said she felt like she
was looking out on a sea of pink,
as all the ladies had dressed for
the occasion.
Pruissen’s daughter, Laura,
was diagnosed with childhood
cancer at the age of two.
In June 2014, she had
complained of having a sore
tummy and a doctor said it was
a side-effect of mumps. But she
was miserable and bloated, so
the family took her screaming to
the doctor, who noticed she had
fever blisters (a sign of a
depressed immune system).
At this stage, the family went
on holiday in Cape Town, where
they met up with Pruissen’s
parents from the UK.
But Laura continued to cry
about a sore tummy, so Pruissen
said they decided: “This is it. We
are going to take her to a
s p e c i a l i st . ”
The doctor said it was not an
emergency, but detected a
hollow sound and subsequently
did some blood tests.
When the tests came back, the
doctor told Pruissen to contact
her husband, Innes, and then
told them it was cancer.
Little Laura just wanted to be
outside in the sunshine, so they
went to Camps Bay and had a
beautiful day. But the next day,
after a 45-minute scan, Laura
was admitted to hospital, on the
third day of their holiday.
They had two hours to go
home and pack, and Pruissen
had to get Laura off the
trampoline to take her to
hospital.
“Are you sure she has
cancer?” asked her granny. “But
whatever you do,” she advised
Pruissen later, “stay positive or
Laura will go downhill”.
With a sick granddaughter
and a distraught daughter, in the
end it was the granny who
suffered the most.
Meanwhile, Pruissen took her
advice and started a gratitude
journal.
Within 24 hours of her
admittance, Laura’s heart
stopped and she had to be
resuscitated in intensive care.
She had Bergen’s lymphoma,
which doubles in size every 24
hours, Pruissen said.
Turning up in her high heels
and fairy dress, she received five
weeks of chemotherapy at the
Red Cross oncology ward, and
dealt with it better than her
mother it seems.
“She was sick and I could not
pick her up because of all the
tubes,” she said.
All Laura said was that she
didn’t like the “yucky medicine”
and the plasters that kept her
tube taped to her chest.
“The medicine was vile and
cancer also changes your
t a st e b u d s , ” said Pruissen, who
moved heaven and earth to get
her daughter what she wanted
when she wanted it.
Something edible in the
morning such as yoghurt, might
by the evening be inedible again,
she explained.
Pruissen stayed with Laura at
hospital and spent an hour with
her older daughter, Emma, when
she was relieved, before
returning to the hospital.
On December 11 2014, the
family were told Laura was in
remission. Her blood counts
continued to climb, and the
family flew back to Grahamstown.
“It was terrible to see other
children in the hospital dying,”
said Pruissen. But her daughter
survived because they heeded
the early warning signs, she said.
did not attend might well be kicking
themselves for missing out on a
great opportunity to pick up some
g r e at bargains.
The auction was held to contribute
towards the Blake Squires Cancer
Fund.
Auctioneer Peter Charter was on
top form as he displayed the items
on sale and steered the bidding in
the right direction.
Items included a day safari at
Kariega Game Reserve and lunch for
nine guests to the value of R9000;
original paintings; frames and
mirrors; knick-knacks and glassware,
two new table lamps with wild olive
stands; a copper fireplace set with a
coal and wood bucket, stand with
shovel, brush and tongs, two copper
jugs, a copper milk can and a
Po st m a st e r ’s Village, other
businesses and individuals showed
their generosity by donating items to
be auctioned,” Po st m a st e r ’s Village’s
Renate Cooper said.
“A big thank you to Kariega Game
Another good action thriller
ROB KNOWLES
Jack Reacher – Never go back, with
Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Aldis
Hodge and Patrick Heusinger,
directed by Edward Zwick. 4/5
IN this, the second instalment of the Jack
Reacher franchise, Reacher (Tom Cruise), a former
military investigator, gets involved in a conspiracy
when he contacts Major Susan Turner (Cobie
Smulders) to assist him in an investigation he has
under taken.
Turner is accused of espionage and arrested by
the military, charged with having two officers
killed under her command. Reacher doesn’t accept
this and speaks with her attorney, Colonel Bob
Moorcroft (Robert Catrini) who informs Reacher
that a woman has lodged a paternity suit against
him, claiming her 15-year-old daughter, Samantha
Dayton (Danika Yarosh), is his.
Reacher decides to investigate the paternity
claim but, on meeting with Dayton, she rebuffs
him, believing he is a narc or someone who just
AT THE An assassin is dispatched to kill
MOVIES Moorcroft, and Reacher is accused of his
murder. He is arrested and taken to the
military prison, but spots two
mercenaries ready to kill Turner and so formulates
a plan where both Turner and he escape and are
now on the run.
The movie is fast-paced and deals with a
number of issues including the impetuosity of
youth, corruption within the military and the power
mongers who use war as a method of profiteering.
Cruise makes an excellent Jack Reacher, with
his underplayed but very effective acting style, he
seems ideally suited to the part.
Smulders is a good counterpoint, more
emotionally charged than Cruise’s character, but
nevertheless driven by the same motivation.
Watch out for Aldis Hodge as Captain Espin.
This is definitely a movie to watch this year and
should leave you wondering if there will be a third
instalment in the Jack Reacher franchise.
¹Some people will open this hand 1D (but not this writer)
² This hand is too strong for a 2S opening; you have 6 spades a singleton
and two outside Aces.
À
West is on lead and knows from the bidding that partner has a weak hand so elects to lead the spade
two expecting to still make a trick with the spade King. North’s 10 wins the trick so declarer cashes
the Ace of spades and plays a heart to the ace followed by a diamond towards the King: West wins with
the Ace and being reluctant to lead a club in case he/she leads into dummy’s A Q returns a diamond.
the QJ; East wins with the King and returns a club. Declarer goes up with the Ace and leads a heart
diamond to make 10 tricks: a feat that (surprisingly) was achieved only twice out of 13 times that spade
contracts were played.
THISWEEK
EXAM SECURITY BEEFED UP
Rhodes University’s end-of-year examinations
continued this week, and venues have taken on a
different feel and look in view of recent fiery protest
action on campus. This has led to increased security
at exam venues, while several additional rules have
been put in place.
Students are required to report to exam venues 30
minutes prior to the scheduled start and to produce
IDs with photos. Latecomers will not be permitted to
write exams. Students will be required to undergo
standard security “pat down” checks similar to those
performed at airports.
Students completing their exams early are required
to remain seated until the end of the exam. The
university has advised that all examination venues
will be under CCTV surveillance. Offenders will be
evicted, receive 0% for the exam, suspended from
Rhodes and prosecuted.
Prior to the commencement of the examination
process last week, students were given the option of
writing their final exams this month or in January
next year.
SMILES AND CASH AT FUN RUN
About 500 runners, joggers and walkers took to
Sunnyside streets last Thursday evening for the
annual Rapportryers/PJ Olivier 5km fun run.
The Rapportryers fun run has been held since 1996,
and the staggering amount of R180000 has been
handed over via entry fees and donations to local
charities and worthy causes in that time.
This year’s beneficiary is Grahamstown-based Heart
Matters Pregnancy Care Centre, and they were
handed a cheque for R12000, the largest ever.
Showing their delight upon receiving the cheque were
Heart Matters counsellors and volunteers who had
earlier participated in the fun run.
The top-three finishers, receiving handsome cash
prizes for their efforts, were Lubahlo Bokuva (first in
21 minutes 04 seconds), Lukhlango Cakuma (second
in 21:07) and S Coko (third in 21:26).
First three ladies, also on the receiving end of
generous cash prizes, were Lauren Ranger (first in
24:49), Kendal Rose of DSG (second in 25:39) and
Jene Banfield (third in 26:34).
First PJ Olivier boy was Daniel Retief (21:33) while
Simone Schoonbee and Bianca Schoonbee (32:55
each) were the first two PJ Olivier girls.
NATURE NERDS FINISH THIRD
The DSG Nature Nerds of Diocesan School for Girls
(Junior School) finished an excellent third overall in
the final round of the national Sasol/Forever Resorts
Enviro Quiz competition held at the Gariep Dam this
past weekend.
The DSG Nature Nerds comprised Sarah
Griffith-Smith, Ruby Graven-Dugmore, Hannah Jones,
Erin Powers, Megan Searle and Catherine Williamson.
The event, running for the past 22 years, has
developed into the most successful school-based
environmental competition of its kind. The first round
earlier this year was contested by 800 schools, and
the final round at Gariep Dam by 14 schools.
The finals comprised six sections, including a
presentation by the DSG Nature Nerds about the
vegetable garden they planted and tended for two
months, as well as a debate in which the team had to
defend fracking, and a general knowledge quiz.
The overall winning school was President Swart
Primary School from Kimberley.
PJ OLIVIER PREFECTS
PJ Olivier High School has announced its prefect
body for 2017. Chairwoman of the prefect committee
is Marilese Ockhuis, and the vice-chairman is Justin
Isaacs. The other prefects are Aidenn Cloete, Davien
Douglas, Elandre Loftie-Eaton, Kepler Louw, Jaydee
Murray, Daniel Retief, Shalisha Sampson, Khanyisa
The 2017 prefects and teacher-in-charge Mrs
Carmen Henning recently visited the Vergelegen
camp between Uitenhage and Jansenville as part of
their leadership, discipline and team-building
ONE HUNDRED IN THE GARDENS
Congratulations to local athlete Peter Stockwell who
completed his 100th parkrun in Makana Botanical
Gardens on Saturday. The road runner-turned-trail
runner ran his first parkrun in September 2014.
WINNERS IN THE VALLEY
Congratulations to Liz Bowker, the Belmont Golf Club
ladies’ champion for this year, with Daphne Bowker
runner-up. The B-division winner is Jess Joyner and
runner-up Leigh Beckerling, while Lynn Rossouw is
the C-division winner and Jenny Emslie runner-up.
GARDENERS MEET
The new NELM building in Worcester Street with its
attractive gardens is the venue for the Albany
Horticultural Society’s annual general meeting from
5pm on Saturday. After the meeting, drinks and
snacks will be served and an auction of plants held.
HANDLING THE FORMALITIES
School prize-giving ceremonies are, in the main,
about pupils and their achievements, be it
academically, culturally or in sport. But what about
the formalities – the speeches, reports and thanks?
Let’s take a look at Graeme College’s prize-giving in
the Monument just the other day. Deputy headmaster
Gregg van Molendorff was master-of-ceremonies and
delivered the welcome address, while Kevin Watson
gave the headmaster’s report. Guest speaker was Old
Graemian and former head boy Jeremy Sieberhagen,
and his wife Marlene handed out the prizes. Prime
monitor Cameron Rafferty gave the primary school
report, while prefect Udochukwu Obi delivered the
senior school report. Graeme schoolmaster of
long-standing, Ian Suttie, introduced the guest
speaker, and head boy Nicholas Zimmerman gave the
vote of thanks.
HEADING UP PORTFOLIOS
St Andrew’s College’s portfolio prefects for 2017 are:
Iain Macpherson (academic portfolio); Francis Christie
(chapel); Graham De Vos (community engagement);
Phillip Parker (President’s Award); Rorke Wilson
(culture and ceremonies); Bradley van Heerden
(dayboy prefect); Andrew van Vuuren (environmental
issues); Khanya Maki (marketing); Callum Dugmore
(sport and recreation); and Brett Harvey and
Alexander Morris (student affairs).
A LONG TIME
Attending a prize-giving ceremony at Victoria Girls’
High School the other day, I was interested in a
painting on one of the school’s interior walls. It
depicts Trevor Long, principal of the school from July
1976 to June 1997. Just shows you how time flies. I
would never have thought it has been almost 20
years since he left VG.
REMEMBERING WITH A HEART
The community is being called upon to support
Hospice’s Tree of Lights this year by buying the
REWIRING SPECIALISTS
An advertisement in a local publication in 1980
informed readers that Mark’s Auto Electrical at 6
Cuyler Street were specialists in the rewiring of cars,
trucks and tractors. They also undertook repairs to
generators, starter motors and alternators. The owner
was Mark Foord.
AND THE WINNERS ARE
The Graemian Cup for the boy most exemplifying the
Graemian motto “Virtute et Opera” was presented to
Calvin Wolhuter at Graeme College’s annual
prize-giving ceremony last month. He was also
presented with the DB Kloot Cup for participating and
excelling in a number of sports and maintaining high
academic standards.
Other awards of note made on the evening were:
Thomas St John Pattle Prize for outstanding
leadership and the boy who contributed most to
Graeme College – Nicholas Zimmerman; Sean Mills &
Steven Bartlett Trophy for most outstanding
sportsman of the year – shared by Azizipho
CANDLES AND SONG
Rotar y’s Carols by Candlelight service, comprising a
nativity performance and singing of carols, takes
place in the Cathedral from 7pm on Tuesday
November 22. Candles and song sheets will be
available at the door for a nominal fee. The Hospice
Tree of Lights will be switched on afterwards.
NO STOPPING THEM
Almost daily, cows wander up and down Sunnyside
streets – even the main thoroughfare into town,
George Street – munching away on the grass-covered
pavements. Occasionally they’re joined by donkeys.
Then, last Sunday morning, about a dozen rather
healthy-looking cattle ran down Watson Street,
chased by two men. Visitors to Grahamstown
regularly voice their concern and disapproval of this
situation, as well as residents via petitions and letters
to the municipality.
SPEEDIER THESE DAYS
Just about everyone these days has a cellphone, it
seems, and almost every cellphone has a built-in
camera. Within minutes users can send the photo
taken with a cellphone across the world. A far cry
from the not-too-distant days when we delivered our
spools to a local pharmacy or photo shop to have
them developed and prints made.
An advertisement in a local publication in 1988
carried a RET Butler’s Pharmacy advertisement
stating: “Try our new one-hour photo service for
quality with speed”.
JUNIOR PRIZE
At PJ Olivier Primary School’s recent foundation
Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet
Club
THE Doris Ford was played on Wednesday
October 26 at Port Alfred Club, and apart from
the wind the day was warm and dry.
The Port Alfred ladies won all three of their
games, with good bowls being the order of the
day. On the same day and same venue the Les
Clarke competition was played, with only one
of the games being won by our men.
The Buco Trips weekend competition was
played last weekend, with five games of 15
ends played in total. Saturday afternoon was
very overcast with drizzle in the early morning
into early afternoon. Play began at 1.30pm, and
with two games to play, only finished at 6pm,
in slightly damp, cool and windy conditions.
Sunday dawned clear, sunny and warm –
perfect weather for bowls. Teams came from
Albany Club, Grahamstown Club, Kenton Club,
Kowie Club, PA Club and a Buco Selected
team. Three games were played and keenly
contested, and good bowling entertained the
many spectators who attended.
The ladies’ section was won by the Kowie
ladies, the men’s B section was won by
Grahamstown club and the men’s A section
was won by the Buco Selected team. The club
winner for the monetary prize was Kowie Club.
Second club winner for a lesser monetary prize
was Albany. The winner of the Buco Trophy
was Kowie Bowls Club. Many thanks to Buco
for sponsoring this annual event which is well
supported every year.
We look forward to participating in the
Kenton Ladies’ Classic on November 8 and 9.
The annual Triangular competition between PA
club, Old Sebornians and Western Suburbs,
will be held next weekend November 12 and
13. Visitors are welcome to come and watch
some good bowls in a huge fun tournament.
We vie for winning the trophy, which is of
course the famed mounted chamber pot!
Kenton Bowling Club
Last week’s activities were once again affected
by inclement weather conditions.
Supa Thursday Trips managed to attract
sufficient players for only one rink and our
greens had to be closed on Saturday.
However, we did manage to honour our
club’s commitment in two local competitions.
On Wednesday six teams (four men and two
ladies) travelled to Port Alfred Bowling Club for
the penultimate rounds of the Les Clarke and
Doris Ford competitions. The men’s side
managed to win with an aggregate score of
23-17. Our ladies did not fare as well and lost
both their games. Our ladies are out of the
competition but our men can still win the
trophy if they win the last round by more than
14 points, ie, with an aggregate score of 28 or
bet ter.
On Saturday, the rain moved east and the
Annual Buco Trips competition could start in
relative dry conditions. The weather gradually
improved and all five rounds were completed
as per schedule. Our men’s “A” and ladies’
teams both managed a second place in their
relative sections. The A-section was won by a
business has been very supportive with the
donation of many prizes and gifts and the
event promises to live up to its enviable
reputation. There will be NO tabs-in bowling on
Wednesday November 9.
Last week’s attendance draw was forfeited
and the jackpot increased to R1800. There will
be a steak ’n chips evening (R40 pp) on Friday
November 4. This, with a possibility of winning
through we have two competitions to make up
before the end of the month due to a full
program in this month. With the usual good
turnout for Tuesday we had some close games
and a few runaways.
The day’s competition winner was Dick
Schuurman’s team of trips John Hubbard and
Neville Westcott who defeated Bob Ford’s
team by 10 points and a big shot profit with
visitor Stan Long’s team of trips as the
runner-up with a full house 10 points over
Pieter Stegmann’s team of trips.
Last Thursday we played the postponed
Courtyard competition at which we welcomed
seven visitors from Dewetsdorp who were on a
bowling holiday and have played throughout
our area. All the games were keenly contested
with Pieter Stegmann’s team of Mazaan from
Dewetsdorp, Ronnie Smith and Lina Woodard
as the winner 2 / +8 over Keith Kolesky’s team
(the winners received vouchers to The
Courtyard). The runner-up was Anne from
Dewets Dorp and her team of fours who
defeated Jacques Krige’s team with 2 / +7.
That was on a count-out with Jackie Kriel’s
team of fours who had the same score.
The weekend had all Eastern Areas clubs
playing in the Buco Trips competition. Sadly
Bedford were unable to make it so the three
coastal clubs made up one team each to
represent the Buco Invitational team. Each
team was required to play five games of 15
ends each against each of the participating
clubs. At the end of the weekend the prize
giving was officiated by the Port Alfred Club
captain and a member of Buco. The section
winners were: Men’s A – Buco Invitational,
Men’s B – Grahamstown BC, Ladies – Kowie
BC. The overall winner was Kowie BC on 72
points and the runner-up prize was presented
to Albany BC.
Duties for the rest of year are being prepared
and members will be notified.
As we require the balls for the nationals this
month please return them to the clubroom as
soon as possible. Please let us know if you
remember who may have borrowed them.
Thank you.
Entries for the nationals have closed and we
have 64 entries: from The Western Cape –
Kelvin Grove, Fish Hoek, Helderberg Village,
and Somerset West; KwaZulu-Natal –
Pietermaritzburg Croquet Club; Eastern Cape
– St Andrews in East London and ourselves;
Gauteng – Johannesburg Country Club,
Golden Mallett and Marks Park.
We will be having a gourmet hamper to
raffle so please we require special items such
as chocolates, homemade delicacies, wines,
etc.
Our monthly rollover will take place on
Tuesday November 8 after play. Remember
you have to be there to win it!

Ladies’ Re s u l t s
October 25: For a change pleasant conditions
availed themselves for Tuesday's ladies’ section
competition. Twenty-eight players turned out to
play a better-ball Stableford.
Lillian Neave and Linda Dobson enjoyed the benign
conditions to score a massive 51 points to win the
competition. Pru Peacock and Helen van
Harmelen's 48 secured them the runners-up
position followed by Kirsten Dales and Margie Reid
who came home third with 46 points. There were
some excellent individual performances, the best
being the nett 64s shot by Lillian and Helen
Lockyear. Dee Jones-Phillipson continued on her
improved streak by netting 67 and Kim Gardner
would have gone home happy with her nett 69.
The longest drive competitions were held on the
18th and struck by Jean Austin and Glynnis
respectively. Kim (sixth), Linda, Yvonne Hill
KGB Results
Tuesday October 25: An excellent morning
dawned for a change, slightly overcast, warm and
no wind of consequence. Thirty-five players took
advantage of the halcyon conditions to be drawn
into eight four-balls and one three-ball to play the
normal two-to-count Stableford alliance.
A massive 97 points was carded by Colin
Armstrong, Wilton Adcock, Johny Johnston and
John Muggeridge to win the competition. Second
placed Vino Bearzi, Mike Stadler, John Crandon
and Peter Longhurst were all of six points in
arrears on 91.
Even the fair Rosie Calmeyer-Leach could not
rescue her partners Cecil Grobler and Len Bohnen
from the infamous Hamer en Sukkel at the 19th
Hole. The three-ball carded a lowly 73 + 5 = 78
points.
Par three birdies were holed by Colin, Wilton
(sixth), Rosie and Derick van Harmelen (eighth).
The best individual nett scores were shot by Derick,
Colin, Johny Johnston (67) and Paul Fryer (69).
Friday October 28: A rather drizzly, grey morning
saw 30 players drawn into six four-balls and two
three-balls in a two-to-count Stableford alliance. As
the rain persisted soaking everyone on the course,
10 players returned to the drier climes of the
clubhouse without finishing the competition. These
ten collectively were awarded the Hamer en Sukkel
“in absentia”.
Of the twenty finishers, the best scores were
shared by (1) Sonia Reynolds, Mike Stadler, David
Groenewald and Martin Lambrechts and (2) Tommy
Meyer, Bryan Connack, George Lake and Rosie
Calmeyer-Leach, both teams carding 89 points.
Tommy, Russell Warren (6th), Len Bohnen (8th)
and Paul Fryer (13th) all sunk par three birdies on
the holes indicated. The best nett rounds were
recorded by Mike Stadler (65), Bryan, Andy
Manson (67), Gavin Richards (68), Neil Loundar
and Paul Fryer (69).
school grounds on Saturday.
As you pulled into the parking area
at the school you could already smell
the boerie rolls and hear the children
as they ran around excitedly, chanting
their war cries and generally enjoying
the day’s entertainment.
They didn’t seem to mind the rain,
which was pouring down in buckets,
and hundreds of people, kids and their
parents, came to the school to support
their favourite teams and participate in
the traditional kaskar-dag activities.
On entering the grounds, to the left
was a downwards slope, at the bottom
of which was a circuit where the kids
pushed their karts around and around,
an endurance race where kart drivers
and pushers swapped places with
fresh team members until the race
officials called time.
The Grade 4 Funky Monkeys
were competing against the
Bandits, with children and
adults standing on the
sidelines cheering on their
preferred team.
Each grade was
responsible for coming up
with a team name and

À
war cry. The grades were judged and
the Grade 5 Bandits were again this
year’s winners.
“The kaskar-dag at the school was
very successful despite the rainy
w e at h e r, ” said teacher Lindsay Cook.
“The children thoroughly enjoyed
competing in the races.”
From the results of the races, it
appeared that the older children
simply had more stamina than their
younger opponents. However, in the
race between Grade R
and Grade
WET, WET, WET: Daniela White got a thoroughly good soaking at one
of the most popular games at the Kenton Primary School Kaskar-dag
on Saturday
1, the Grade Rs were victorious.
Between Grade 2 and 3, the Grade 3s
were victorious and, in the final
between the Grade Rs and Grade 3s,
the Grade 3s won.
The Grade 4 and Grade 5 race saw
the Grade 5s as victors. And in the
Grade 6 versus the Grade 7s, the
Grade 7s were victorious. In a
remarkable final race, the Grade 5s
raced against the Grade 7s, with the
Grade 5s winning.
Later in the day, the Port Alfred
SAPS dog unit under Captain Lilly
Erasmus entertained the
parents and pupils with a
mock robbery and
hijacking. There were
also tug o’wa r
challenges. One
challenge was between
the teaching staff of
Kenton Primary and
parents and, with a
cheer, the teachers
took the cup.
At about 5pm, the
potjiekos competition
judging began. The
fires had been blazing
all morning and
afternoon in anticipation
of the taste testing. Tiny
Neethling was the winner
of the best potjiekos.
“Kenton-on-Sea
Primary is so grateful to
all the sponsors, parents,
teaching staff, volunteers
and for everyone who
helped to make this day
so successful,” said Cook,
adding that the school
managed to raise more
than its target of
R60 000.
