Sprockets: Coming this

Sprockets: Coming this Spring By David Robertson, Region President n North Texas, February is always a hard I month to call as far as weather goes. One day I could be sitting by my pool writing Sprockets in 75-degree sunny weather as I am now, and tomorrow there could be six inches of snow and ice on the ground. I for one am always ready to go out for a drive in my 911 this time of the year whenever there is a good day for it. If you need a good excuse to get out, we always have a couple of lunches during the month where we meet up, and at least one happy hour/dinner. If you follow the various social media outlets that we use, you will see from time to time impromptu gatherings for coffee, lunch, drinks, or cigars -- pretty much anything that gives us a good excuse to get together on a nice day. Many of these impromptu or even semi-planned gatherings are not Maverick PCA sanctioned events, but we just enjoy getting together for just about any reason! Registration is open for the Spring Treffen in The Hill Country. These new Treffens are national multiday PCA events (replacing the previous PCA Escapes) with driving tours as well as fun non-driving events such as winery and brewery visits, a tour of some of the food trucks that Austin is so famous for, and other great options. The Hill Country Treffen will be held March 29 through April 2 at the Lost Pines Resort east of Austin. The fall Treffen will be in Asheville, NC. Coming the last weekend of February is our first big driving event which is a Drivers’ Education out at MotorSport Ranch. There is also the Carrera of the Americas PCA Club Race and Advanced DE sponsored by the Maverick, Hill Country, and Lone Star Regions at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, March 3-5. This takes the place of the previous TWS race. You may notice that the Carrera of the Americas event has been moved so it doesn’t conflict with Mother’s Day anymore! I have been asked a couple of times how I came up with the name Sprockets for my column. It certainly stands to reason that sprockets come to mind when we are discussing any of the Porsche automobiles. In the past, you could see them right there on the engine performing various tasks. Now when I look behind the rear deck lid of a newer 911 there doesn’t even seem to be an engine to look at. But, as I reminisce about the olden days when Porsches had engines that were visible to the naked eye, I also reflect on the old Saturday Night Live skit named Sprockets that was a spoof on German seriousness, efficiency, and precision, and always included a certain monkey. If you are not familiar with this particular skit then you need to look it up because I cannot explain it to you. SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 As always, we are looking for volunteers and I am certain we can find a place for you. Please contact our Volunteer coordinator Jimmy Gallegos at volunteers@ I look forward to seeing all of you at one of our great events this month! MAV OF THE MONTH: Chris Flaugh Chris is one of our relatively recent Maverick members who almost immediately looked for a way to get more involved and contribute to our club activities. As it turned out, we needed someone to chair our Goodie Store effort and Chris took on that challenge without hesitation. When you order your Maverick name tag, that’s Chris who gets the process going and sees that your name tag arrives quickly. In addition, he has helped move our club store into its use of our new Maverick logo and works with PCA on the items available to order. His most recent Porsche is a 30-year old extremely original red 924S, and he also has a 31-year-old Alfa Romeo to keep him busy. Congratulations Chris! 2 February
