PRESIDENT’S CORNER
When horses make us laugh
There is nothing so pure
Majesty and beauty with such cunning cleverness
Stoicism that can turn to goofiness in a moment
Pixies, jokers, elves, geniuses
Every day - an opportunity to grin at their shining personalities
What an amazing way to enjoy a moment - laughing with your horse!
Jodi
more were awarded to a large group
Meet Our Members
My name is Michele Parrish and I have been studying
the art of riding and horsemanship most of my life. My
passion for horses started when my dad first put me on
a pony at the age of 4 and it took off from there! I have
now been riding for 32 years and competing, teaching
and training in dressage, eventing, and hunter/jumpers
for 20 of those years. For the last 7 years, I have been
managing my own facility and teaching, training, and
competing full time. I have studied classical equitation
and base my training philosophy from the schools of Dr.
Reiner Klimke, Gordon Wright, and behavioral training
from horse masters Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance. I
believe that all disciplines from dressage to hunter
jumpers should stem from the same philosophy of horsemanship always putting the horse first
and developing relaxation, forward, straightness and rhythm.
Although my wonderful human teachers have guided me forward into the art of horsemanship
and equitation, I must acknowledge my most diligent and unfailing teachers, the horses! I have
been striving more diligently to learn the language of “equus” in order to better understand the
horses that I work with and “speak” to them in a language that they understand. My studies of
the behavioral patterns of horses and how they communicate with each other have led to a
much deeper and thorough understanding of the hows and whys of what we do as trainers,
riders, and owners of these wonderful animals. It is my desire to bring the language of equus
to my human students to teach them how to speak to and train their horses in a way the
horses understand. This leads to building a stronger bond of relationship and trust between
equine and human that can then be taken in any direction, whether going for a pleasure ride
down the trail or into the competition arena.
I currently run an equestrian center in Flat Rock, NC at the lovely Paris Stables, which
currently accommodates 17 horses including boarders, horses in training and lesson horses. I
teach all levels of riding focusing on a strong classical foundation of equitation and
horsemanship. I also host and teach a variety of clinics and seminars including “understanding
equus and equitation: how to combine their language and ours”, “gymnastics for physical
development of the equine athlete”, “trailer loading: problems and solutions”, “biomechanics
and dressage to music: using rhythm to tap into unity in movement with your horse”, etc. At my
facility and travel in and out of state to teach clinics as well. I joined FRC because I was highly
impressed by the organization itself as well as the avenue to introduce my students and horses
into the world of competitive dressage and combined training without the stresses of rated
showing. I find all of the shows I have attended to be nicely laid out and well run and all of the
staff and judges to be very accommodating and helpful with the students and developing
horses. I cannot express enough gratitude to FRC for making these shows a venue for
learning and development of horse and rider!
The following are a few highlights of life lessons I feel that horses have taught me:
- How to step back and breathe; not everything has to go
according to my plan!
- Formulas do not work with equines or people; every horse
and every human have their own personality and best way
that they learn. They all need the same basics but the road to
get them there may not be the same as the last individual.
- Think outside of the box - the horses are always talking to
us if we will take a minute and listen. It might cost us some
self-pride but we will always gain treasure chest of knowledge
by doing so.
- Humility goes a long way in this beautiful journey of horsemanship and life!
- Poop happens… a lot!
- Don't be afraid to get to the end of yourself… it is in that moment that you will find out what
you are really made of.
- last on this list but certainly not the least is what an incredible gift and honor it is to work in
the presence of such noble, honest, and forgiving creatures.
Feel free to contact me for more info about my training philosophy, to inquire about lessons,
training, or board at 33-416-0672 or email at michele.parrish@yahoo.com or via Facebook
messenger. My barn Facebook page is mp equestrian at paris stables for photos or info on
upcoming clinics and shows.
