Note
The fear in the land is real. Every where you turn, you
see proof why you should be afraid. Bandits invade schools
and cart away innocent children and teachers. From
around the nation, we hear of people being kidnapped. In
traffic, miscreants terrorise motorists at gun point. And at
home that should be a safe haven for anyone, nannies and
house helps are now becoming nightmares to house
owners; stealing valuables or out rightly stealing babies
they were employed to care for.
How does one stay safe? We asked Augusta Peter, our
cover personality and CEO of Brain & Braces, a security
outfit in Lagos. Pgs 8-10.
The Power Dressing in most cases, is the style code for
the woman at the top. Find out how she does it with Yemisi
The Fedora is a simple hat but one with attitude and one
that gives instant swag. Linda Orajekwe gives you five
rules for wearing it. Pg 6
How to do ...
Go for Power Suit
Whether it's a skirt or trouser suit,
wearing a power suit shows that
you mean business. Go for suits
with fitted cuts and soft colours to
wear all year round.
Taking care of yourself and
investing in your appearance,
sends a positive message
about who you are, and how
you want to be treated. And
with fashion, you don't have to
be rich and powerful to make
a statement. Being confident
in your looks is a major part of
oozing confidence and power.
With power dressing, the key for
women is to look professional
yet, retain their femininity. It is
all about the right attitude as
well as the right clothes. It's
also about owning your outfit
and your look.
These days, power dressing
is one of the many tools the
female boss and career woman
uses to create an image that
helps advance her career
and cause. Power dressing
is culturally relative, even job
specific, but there are certain
universal principles that apply
as stated below.
Pencil Skirt
The effortlessly, chic pencil skirt is
the boss's wardrobe essential. From
black, blue, brown to any other solid
colour, wear with solid blouses,
shirts and heels for a polished look.
SILVER WHITE PEAL
Classy Accessories
Keep it classy and elegant. Besides your
clothes, what determines your look also has
to do with the kind of accessory that you
wear with it. For a classic yet elegant look, it
is advisable to keep accessories minimal; a
pearl necklace, a simple sculptural gold cuff or
tiny necklace and simple stud earrings. Do not
wear too much bling.
Power Bag
Go for sleek, timeless
and utterly sophisticated
structured bags that can
carry almost everything
you need. Remember to
keep the colours solid,
nothing too loud. You can
do red; a red bag makes
a powerful statement.
Be Well Groomed
A perfectly groomed look is a
very important tip with respect
to power dressing. Make sure
your hair is clean and well styled
Wear minimal makeup. Have a
manicure, no 'flamingo pink' or
'tomato red; just the palest pink
or better yet, French tips. Most
importantly, be confident, stand
tall and smile.
PEPLUM
PENCIL DRESS
,
Perfectly Fitted
Dresses
Nothing defines power better than
crisp, tailored formal wear. So be
careful with the fit, for your sheath
and A-line dresses.
Statement Shoe
When it comes to power dressing, a
pair of heels is an instant confidence
booster. Choose one in a patent
finish with a more pointed toe for a
bit of extra glam. If you are in a more
creative setting, experiment with
different shoe styles that best fit your
personality.
PATENT LEATHER HEELS
WELL TAILORED SHIRT
ON MUSTARD PANTS
Well- Tailored
Shirts
A well- fitted shirt in the right
shade and cut is an ideal
power piece for any wardrobe.
Invest in tiny stripes, a classic
white shirt and other colours
that give a professional
outlook.
Classic
Wristwatch
Learn to combine polished
stainless steel wristwatch
with your outfit.
Great Underwear
Yes, confidence and feeling great, start
underneath your clothes! Invest in good
quality underwear! If your bra rides up at
the back, it's the wrong size. If you wear
the correct underwear, it provides a great
base for whatever clothes you put on,
making you look even more confident.
Choose Luxurious
fabrics
Fabrics like silk and satin are perfect for
modern power dressing.
They are a bit of a splurge but will feel
a lot better than wearing cheap fibres
against your skin.
Rules For
Wearing
Fedora
Make Sure The Cap Fits
One thing about the fedora hat is that it might look good
on the display but it might not look good on your head.
Just the way a short man should not wear a long double
breasted jacket, you have to choose your hat
considering the shape of your head. If your head is long
and thin, stay away from a fedora with a tall crown;
unless you're trying to look like an alien. If you have a
round or wide head, getting something with really wide
brim will make you look like a vampire hunter. So stay
away! But if you have a smaller head size, consider
getting a pork-pie hat. This type of fedora has a smaller
brim, that way it fits your face better.
Men of all forms and classes want
to be gentlemanly but still remain
stylish; and if there is one fashion
item that can help achieve that, it
will be the timeless fedora hat,
which will make you look edgy and
classy. Your Fedora hat doesn't
have to be 1 00°/o beaver fur or
expensive for you to feel stylish in
it. Follow these 5 rules and bring
on your swag
Wear Your
Fedora On A
Dressy Occasion
This rule is for those guys who wear their one and
only black fedora on almost everything they own.
Don't. A fedora is worn to stand out and once you do
it every time, you're no longer standing out rather, it
will become the look you're known for, which is liable
to get stale as fast you started it. Since a fedora has
been associated with suit in our mind, that form of
look has made it a special stylish look only classic
men who aim to dare can pull off. You certainly
wouldn't want to be like the lady wearing a beautiful
dress on a Jean because it's her favorite Jean, right?
So don't wear your fedora on everything, every time!
Your Shirt Must Have A
Collar
A Fedora should be worn with jackets and collared
shirts, but if you're planning on wearing a fedora with
a non-collared top, then, top it off with a killer blazer
to help you look sharp, classic and smart.
Choose Fedora That Matches
Your Style
We all have our unique styles and wearing a fedora that speaks the
language of your style is as important as choosing the perfect belt
and shoes for your pants. If you are more of a traditionalist, consider
getting a classic fedora which is generally made of wool and will
make you look like the gangsters in old movies.
What
with your
The Little White Dress is a typical summer staple that
is simple, versatile and easy to style.
The simple nature of the colour associated with
purity and cleanliness, being a base colour, gives
more room for experimentation with shoes and other
accessories to pull off the look that you want to
achieve.
Here are some tips to help you style your white
dress.
Wear With Red Polka Dots
As an option to your beautiful piece of
outfit in this season of love, dress
unique by pair your white dress with a
pair of red and white polka dots
platform pumps. Along with a matching
red bag, this will give you an instant
pop of bold colour and glam.
Beige Or Metallic Accents
Beige or Metallic are great for accenting a white
dress as the colours will pop against the outfit. Work
your favourite metal into your looks; a pair of gold,
silver or beige shoes as desired.
/
Add A Black Jacket
Contrast your white dress with a
dark jacket or blazer for a
sophisticated look. This will
make your plain white edgy for
an evening out in town.
Wear With Sbuct~nd
Bag And Classic Pumps
Just like the little black dress, the little
white dress has serious ladylike
potential. Pair a collared white dress
with a pair of basic black pointy-toe
pumps, and a structured bag that pulls
the whole outfit together.
Wear With Gladiator Sandals
A white dress has earned its spot in your
summer closet not just because it's a
must for keeping you cool. Wear with
casual sandals, you're set for a day at
the beach.
At bet· Gbagada oflice, we met a culnu·ed woman, one accustomed to ot·det· and discipline.
You could have been a Policeman or a teacher
or nurse but you are sitting atop a security
business. How did the journey start?
Interest sparked it all. Of course, I didn't start
out as an entrepreneur. I worked in different
places, until I got to a point where I thought I
needed to do something for myself. I wanted to be
able to control my time and make decisions about
the things I do and how I want it done.
While you were in paid employment, were
there things you thought you could do
differently if you owned your own business?
It is easy for people to think that way but, being
on this other side now I can tell you it's not easy.
What you cannot do as an employee, you cannot
do it as an employer. If you can't sacrifice, if you
are not disciplined, you cannot be a disciplined
employer. There are no two ways about it.
So what did you bring from your work
background to start a business?
I brought experience, discipline and
determination.
Would you say you were lucky to have those
kinds of bosses that inspire one?
The organizations I worked in over the years,
have helped in shaping me into the kind of boss I
am today. And this is because of the work culture
and discipline that they had. I have worked in
places where deadline was deadline. If you were
given a deadline, you had to meet it. There was no
two ways about it. If you didn't do it, there were
consequences. So coming over to this place, that
experience has helped me. I don't go to bed when
I have something to do. You learn how to keep
appointments. You know being the CEO, you are
the chief marketer; there are times, you are given
an appointment for ?pm, you have to be there.
If I wasn't a disciplined employee, I wouldn't be
a disciplined CEO. So, if your employees see that
you keep to time, they will fall in line and go with
the vision. So that culture I learnt over the years
has helped to shape my business environment
and even the policies that guide us.
What were your fears starting off?
For those who know me, I never have fears. If
you know who you are in Christ, then you'd never
have fears. Have focus and have a vision not
fears. Co incidentally, I came out when people
thought I shouldn't. But I had this inner peace that
whatsoever I lay my hands on to do will prosper.
A lot of people are stuck on their paid jobs
because of fear of uncertainties. What would
you say to them?
That is true but success is not meant for the
faint hearted or fearful. There is nothing that is
beautiful or so worth it that does not involve a little
risk. You must be bold and ready to take risks. So
for me, it was a calculated move. I knew I was
going to move. I had planned the time and settled
the matter at home with my family.
And that meant that if you were doing anything
that was over board, you needed to reduce it. We
planned all of that and it worked.
What was your interest in security a field many
would consider a man's terrain?
You go into a particular line of business based
on your skill set, your network or financial
capability. For me, it was interest and network and
when opportunity meets preparedness, it works. I
February 5, 2017 I ALLURE 9
e REPORTAGE
have always loved anything that has to do with
security so when the opportunity came for me, it
was easy for me to horn it, develop my skill and
interests.
We live in a very trying time now security
wise. What are we not doing right about
personal security?
First of all, I think we take things for granted.
We are not security conscious. We would rather
spend money on luxury and expensive trips
forgetting that security is also a lifestyle. If you
don't put proper security in place, the people you
put in your homes, maids, nannies, drivers etc
could become harzadous to you. If you use
gadgets for example, gas, generator, etc. there
are safety features that you can put. Some people
build their houses forgetting that there is what is
called crime control by environmental design.
How do I build this house in such a way that if
there are security or safety issues, where is my
escape route? Most times, we don't think about
that. It is not enough to put guards in front of your
house. Sometimes, people install CCTV for
reactive use instead of proactive use. This period,
trust no one. Put structures in place to ensure that
you are safe. Even schools should have security
measures that can trigger and alert people. This is
the time we should be very careful and be
concerned about our personal safety and security.
Some people just put a guard in front of the
house and he starts selling; you know nothing
about him. If they want to rob your house, these
people just keep coming to buy things and
monitor your house.
What security measures can you put in your
house when you are still building?
Your architect should work with security
experts. There must be an emergency exit in
homes. The architect will put an exist door that
will be known to a few members of the family.
When you finish, you can put something like a
plank there to cover it, but you know that when
you pull it, there is a stairway leading downstairs
there. You also need a smoke detector etc. Before
you have a full blown fire, the alarm will trigger.
That is why you have smoke detector in the
house. There is also sensor for glass or wall
breakage. Once you hit the wall or glass the
alarm triggers.
What can a mother do to safeguard her
children against helps that they bring in?
Do proper vetting and clarking for the people
who work for you. The person must be tracable.
Then when you employ them, ensure you are nice
to them and try and manage the kind of
information that they hear. I have met people who
because they were told to do finger prints were
scared and after working 2-3 days, left on their
own. Get helps from the right sources and ensure
they go through all security screening before they
get in.
Put survellance system in the house and you
can check from your mobile phone. While on a
trip, I called my house and asked the security
man who the person was that entered the boys
quarters? In fact, by the time I came back, the
security man left. I have come back home once to
ask him why he was taking diesel that he
shouldn't be taking. He was shocked.
Some people have complained how their
maids stole their jewellery worth millions of naira.
''
We take things,
for granted, we
are not security
conscious. We
would rather
spend monev on
luxur_y anil
expens1ve trips
forgeHing that
security is also a
lifestyle
So if you have that kind of valuable in the house,
why should you have a normal door in your
house? Why can't you pay to have a security door
installed?
What security services does your company
offer?
We provide everything about security. We run
security training, escort services, protocol
services, we do screening as well.
What is the most challenging aspect of your
work?
The guards sometimes move beat too quickly.
Some can move for just N200. There was a beat
we had, within two weeks, we had four people
leaving. We had to change and change again. A
lot of them when they come in and you deploy
them to a bank, the next thing is, you will see
them going to submit CVs at the bank they were
sent to guard. That is a challenge.
We've had an instance where we were asked
to provide security for an estate and one of those
nights around 12 am, I decided to go on patrol. I
was wearing a t- shirt and face cap so they didn't
know me. I just stood at the gate. It was our first
day. The residents refused to come down from
their cars for routine stop and check. They were
busy chanting "Una go tire". To come down from
their cars was a problem. If we don't get
cooperation from people we are protecting, how
do we do our jobs well? It's so frustrating. They
will insult the guards. Then some will say because
they are stars or celebrities, they don't want to
comply forgetting that if there is a problem, your
stardom will not save you.
How do you balance work and home so that
none suffers?
Everything is about planning. I have time for
my work, time for my faith and time for my family. I
ensure that none affects the other. I have time for
my myself, because I know I have to be in top
form to go to any of the jobs.
When you are not working, what do you do?
I listen to messages. I also love to dance with
my kids. I recall that before I got too busy, every
Friday, once I came back from the office, we
would have what we called Friday Night life; and
we would dance in the house. But now, the kids
are in school except for my last baby.
As the owner of a business, what image do
you like to cut?
I like to look formal because security is a very
serious business. One of our core values is
professionalism; so you'll always see me formerly
dressed in suits. But when I'm at home, I dress
down.
Do you have labels that you wear?
I like quality and something that is premium but
durable. I wouldn't want something that is tacky.
And for accessories?
Anything that is good I use. I wouldn't say I am
a fashionable person, but I love shoes and I also
love bags.
Do you have a travel destination?
That was before the excange rate went up. I
used to like to go to Paris but I am a huge fan of
Nigeria. I used to like Israel a lot too because of
my work. Right now, my travel destination will be
my home town in Edo state.
Where would you go to over and over again?
That would be La Campaign Tropicana. I love
the beach, the palm trees; you'd have a feel of
your village there. You have local dancers and
palm wine, bush meat etc. These days, people go
to Calabar Carnival. If every state can develop
something, you'd see that outside travels will be
reduced. And we would save the money we carry
out.
Make Up Tips For
DARKSKINNE
WOMEN
1
Be Careful Choosing
Foundation
Select a foundation that is not lighter
than your natural skin colour, or you
will make your skin look grey. Liquid
foundation generally looks better on dark
skin because it won't look too matte.
Having a beautiful dark skin
tone means that you have
a different set of makeup
rules. It also means that you
can use different shades
of makeup and employ
different techniques with
amazing tricks to make
the most of your beautiful
dusky complexion. Here
are 5 make up tips for a
gorgeous skin glow.
3
Use ASkin
Toner
4
Lipstick
The darker shades
are the best shades
of lipstick to
compliment your
skin tone. Avoid
bright coloured
lipsticks. Beige and
coffee shades will
look the best.
2 EyeMakeup
Try shades like brown, green and
copper. Smoky eyes also look really
amazing on dark skin too, especially
when combined with a bit of shimmery
colour on the inner corners of the eyes.
All these give a fantastic look for an
evening out.
SKIN TONER
A lot of people have
never tried skin toner,
but it really can make a
huge difference to how
good your skin looks.
Using a skin toner every
day helps to get rid of
excess oil in the skin, will
keep your skin looking
fresh and youthful.
Go Easy With Powder
Your dark skin is gorgeous so don't cover
it up with too much powder. Choose a
powder that is as close to your natural
skin tone and apply less quantity, or it
will look caked on your skin.
Signs You Aren't Getting
Enough Sleep
1. You Battle Breakouts
If you're not getting good sleep, your skin may soon
show it. Some studies have found a link between a
lack of ZZZs and acne, perhaps related to how sleep
controls hormones in your body. Sleep deprivation
also hurts the immune system, leaving your body
open to many different issues.
2. Your Eyes Don't Look Good
Redness, puffiness,
dark circles, and bags
-- all signs that you're
not getting enough
shut -eye. The sleepdeprived
tend to get
more wrinkles, lines,
swelling, and droopiness, studies show. Why? It
may be that your body misses out on the hormone
control and tissue repair that happens in deep sleep
stages.
3· You Gain Weight
When you get a good night's rest, your body can
properly control the hormones that affect how
hungry you feel, ghrelin and leptin. Without them,
you may feel the urge to eat more than you need,
which can make you gain weight.
4· You Chug More
Caffeine
Not a huge surprise: If
your usual 2 cups of
nescafe and milk and
sugar just aren't cutting
it, you may not be as
rested as usual. Caffeine
may seem like an
answer to poor sleep,
but it quickly can
become part of the
problem. In the short
term, the pick-me-up of
coffee or soda may
make you more alert, but in the long term, it can
lead to insomnia or anxiety.
s.YoucraveJunkFood
After a sleepless night, you may be more likely to
pick that cheeseburger, ofada stew and oily jollof
and or fries over a salad for lunch. A sleep-deprived
brain is more likely to crave unhealthy snacks and
meals. It may be that judgment and decisionmaking
aren't as sharp when you're tired, which
makes it easier for other desires to take over.
6. You Feel Moody & Depressed
Irritability is a big sign
of poor sleep. One
study limited people to
4 1j2 hours of sleep a
night for a week. The
result: More stressed,
angry, and mentally
exhausted people. They felt better when they
returned to their normal schedules. Depression and
poor sleep are also closely related. Worse, they're
circular -- depression can lead to poor sleep, and
the reverse can happen, too.
7· Focus and Memory Feel Dim
Even a little less sleep -- losing just 2 hours if you
usually snooze 8 hours a night -- can make you
groggy and affect concentration and memory. This
may make you less skilled at work -- or worse,
behind the wheel of your car. More than one-third
of people admit dozing off while driving.
8. Mornings Feel crummy
Waking up with a sore throat, dry mouth, or
headache could point to a medical reason you're
sleeping poorly -- sleep apnea, snoring, or acid
reflux, for example. If you notice symptoms over
and over, talk to your doctor. She can figure out if
medication or other treatment would help you.
GETTHERESTYOUNEED
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
Make sure it's restful:
Stick to a schedule, which means going to
bed and waking up about the same time each
day.
Keep your room cool, quiet, and dark.
Exercise regularly, especially workouts that
get your heart pumping. It may promote
deeper sleep.
A good night's sleep repairs the body and
mind, which helps you function at your best.
BEAU1YBITES:
Sugar crystals rubbed on your lips help to get
rid of flaky skin leaving lips smoother and
softer.
drinking of lemon water for weight loss in the allure. Can I
still drink the lemon water for reducing my tummy without
losing weight? Please your early reply will be appreciated.
Thank you for your mail
Yes you most definitely can. In addition for belly fat loss
you have to reduce your carbohydrate consumption. If you
eat a lot of rice and cassava (garri etc) then you will have a
big tummy.
Hope this helps.

Sex coaching in this part of the world is to a
large extent, a new trend; as such, a lot of
people do not really have the basic
information about what it entails. Most times,
people just shy away and stay hung up about sex as
an act, without knowing that they actually need to
read, study and be guided in order to be the best
sexually, and happiest lovers that they can be.
However, sex coaching is fast becoming a huge trend
and the eyes of people with sex related challenges
are being opened to the immense benefit that will
accrue to them when they have a sex coach intervene
in their matters.
These and more are what I will be addressing on this
column. And that brings us to the question I am
certain many would like to ask.
WHO IS A SEX COACH?
He or she is a person who helps you with your sex
and relationship life, so that you can discover your
sexuality, and be a very confident sexual person. A
sex Coach, deals with sex issues without blame,
shame, or negative judgement so that the client can
comfortably, talk about the things that are on a normal
day, difficult to talk about or express without a sense
of shame. This will enable the person move in to
another level of sexual pleasure and fulfilment.
A sex coach assists people who have challenges
and relationship issues that prevent them fully
experiencing sex in it's totality.
Different kinds of sex challenges can be solved
through a reflective process or by developing skills
with professional guidance.
Sex coaches also help to assist people in getting
rid of any form of myths and misconceptions about
sex, guide them to let go of unrealistic expectations,
unhealthy emotional and sexual shame and create
that pattern of sexual life that they want to experience
and enjoy.
Note that a sex coach is a life coach, instead of
coaching you on self esteem, emotional intelligence,
spirituality, finance e.t.c, a sex coach will just focus on
helping you to achieve your sexual goals.
There are different types of sex coaches, but my area
of interest, is simply to work on people's goals for
sexual healing, erotic and emotional skill building and
relationship transformation.
Men and women alike, need to learn things no one
ever taught them about sex from someone who knows
about sex, and who would not tell them to go about it
with a set of rigid rules or regulations.
On a final note, sex coaching is different from sex
therapy because it is not focused on healing past
wounds as much as it is about creating one's life in
the present. Hence, sex coaching addresses a
person's specific concerns in a powerful way that can
transform one's life.
In conclusion, sex coaches act as educators and
facilitators more than as therapists. The truth of the
matter, is that the answers actually lie with the client
and a sex coach's duty is to guide the person to
identify the answers as some people have had a
sub-par sex education.
One of the very best gifts of life that God gave to
man, is undoubtedly, sex! Hence, as your coach, in
the weeks ahead, we would laugh and lighten your
mindset about the whole sex stuff, while looking into
your sex life. Welcome to Sexmatics
Business Etiquettes Of A Good CEO
I
came across a post that said that the
best way to lead people is from behind
and that a good leader should only stay in
front at the battle field. That being said,
leaders are meant to have the interest of
their followers at heart. As we all know,
respect is reciprocal. Every person in
organisation, from the cleaner to the CEO
are all relevant having their roles to play,
so they ought to be treated with respect.
This is where business etiquette comes in.
Business etiquette is really all about
making people feel good. It's not about
rules or telling people what to do, or not
to do. It's about ensuring some basic
social comforts. Below are basic business
etiquette for CEOs:
1. KNOW THE NAMES
It's just as important to know your peers or
employees as it is to develop relationships with
clients, vendors or management. CEOs should
reach out to people in their company, regardless of
their roles, and acknowledge what they do. It goes
a long way and shows that the CEO is interested in
their welfare.
2. FOCUS ON THE INDIVIDUAL(S) AT A
MEETING
With the advent of technology, it could be hard not
to be distracted these days. We have a plethora of
devices to keep us occupied; emails and phone
calls come through at all hours; and we all
think we have to multitask to feel efficient and
productive. When you're in a meeting or listening
to someone speak, turn off the phone. Don't check
your email. Pay attention and be present.
3· DON'T JUDGE
We all have our vices-and we all have room for
improvement. One of the most important parts
of modern-day etiquette is not to criticize others.
As the boss, it is proper to not openly criticise a
fellow worker in the presence of other workers.Y ou
may disagree with how another person handles a
specific situation, but rise above and recognize that
everyone is trying their best. It's not your duty to
judge others based on what you feel is right. You
are only responsible for yourself. Individuals want
to stand out and be liked and accepted by their
peers-both socially and professionally.
4· LEAD BY EXAMPLE
In terms of dressing, arrival to work,
professionalism and other virtues , they should
reflect in the boss's behaviour and attitude for
his employees to emulate. It is of no use if the
boss stands for something but does not reflect
it. His/ her attitude should be a reflection of the
organisation. This should add up to actualising of
the organisation goals.
5· PRACTISE EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION
As CEO, clarity is very key. He/She should ensure
that there is effective communication between
himself/herself and the employees. This is needed
before anyone else can truly support your
company's mission. Complexity is an enemy and
simplicity is a friend. The CEO should speak that
even a class one student would understand the
message.
WITH Selaik Tanatar
earn of financial experts from the International
Finance Corporation (IFC), (private sector arm of
he World Bank), recently visited Nigeria on a fact
finding mission. The team looked into different sectors to
see in what capacity the IFC can support businesses and
help the production sector move forward.
Head of strategic business solutions, IFC Selaik Tanatar,
spoke with Allure during a courtesy visit to the national
secretariat of the Fashion Designers Association of
Nigeria (FADAN), in Lagos.
What is this mission to Nigeria about?
This mission initially, is just to look to see if
there is a role for IFC to play. That is why we are
looking into different sectors: fashion industry,
textile industry, food, the manufacturing sector
genetally. It is a kind of routine assignment in
IFC to go into countries that we believe have huge
potentials, look and talk to different stakeholders,
find out how big the potential is, identify the
challenges and, find the potential roles that IFC
can play to help the sector move forward.
What groups have you met with since you
came?
We have met with a lot of fashion designers, we
have met manufacturing associations, we have
met representatives from different industries and
what our impressions are is that yes, there is a lot
of potentials from these industries, we have done
our research before we came, but the thing that we
are trying to understand, is why when there is so
much talent and such a huge market, why Nigeria
is still importing more than go% of its textile and
a large number of food products from outside.
We are trying to figure out the biggest challenges
that are being faced here in Nigeria. If there is a
potential and there is a market, organically, the
economy will grow and manufacturing sector
will grow. We are trying to pin point areas where
maybe the industries can solve by themselves.
What can IFC do to help the designers?
At the moment, I don't know. That is why we
are here. We are looking into it. One thing is for
sure, for manufacturing industries to work, you
need the creative talents, you need the producers
14 ALLURE I February 5, 2017
and then you need people who can support the
systems and administer the processes for the
production or financing to work. Like I said,
there is a lot of talent but our first observation is
that the producing side is a little bit weak both
in terms of capacity and in terms of knowledge.
The administrative side also, is not as strong as it
should be.
In other countries where you have
intervened, what kind of interventions do
you give?
We do a lot of different interventions but what
we like most, is where we have an investable
client; that is, a client that we have invested in and
then we leverage on the clients capacity to source
locally, to distribute and to help them to maximize
their economy. Unfortunately, not all markets
have a good company that we can invest in and
therefore, we as advisory function of the IFC, we
are also looking at how we can help local sponsors
to become investable. We go beyond that also
that, if we don't have local sponsors that we can
in a short time develop to become bankable and
investable, we then look into the value chains. But
as investors, we are cautious because we can't do
everything by ourselves. So we are trying to find
the area where we have strength and knowledge
and where we can have maximum interventions.
Some designers do well here but have not
been able to break into the international
market. What things do you think they
need to do to be able to export?
Well, I will say forget the export for now.
The reason for that is because, I see so much
talent in Nigeria and there is plenty to go round
here. Again, like the Turkey example, Turkey
is exporting about $25 Billion a year in textile
products but, the local market is probably $40-60
billion. But when you start exporting, there are
many other things that come up that your people
are not yet aware of at this point. For example,
when you want to export to Europe, they want
equal labelling. They want their product be be
assured that no harmful things or dyes have been
used. They want certification for that fabric quality
according to what you have been promising. They
are very strict with their quality requirement and
it's a huge challenge to overcome. Trying to break
or overcome that challenge, I think its a little
bit too early. You need a very strong base in the
sector first. Having fashion shows and having your
products on display, is the very beginning; that
is what is opening the market for you. In terms
of effort, I will say that is about 5% of the total
effort that you need to be able to export to the
European and US market. I have been to several
Turkish companies that have tried to export, and
have burnt their money. They produced, tried
to export but the products were returned simply
because, they were not complying with European
regulations for health, safety etc
Is there hope?
Of course, there is hope. You have a great
market.
Have you enjoyed the country?
Yes, definitely. I love African countries and
Nigeria is one of them.
