PRIESTLY PONDERINGS
The Benefice of the Hedinghams and Upper Colnes.
Last month seven of the local churches were joined into a grouping
known as a 'benefice'. This is a very old churchy word but I didn't
really know what it meant. So I looked it up and here is the definition:-
Benefice(n) c 1300 “a church living” – from joining the Latin
beneficium (a favour, service, generosity, kindness, benefit) and
facere (to do, to make).
So the benefice is here to make a difference in these communities by
acts of service, generosity and kindness.
I would like to think that there are a lot of ways in which we do this
already. As well as our Sunday services, we run community events,
visit the sick and the housebound, provide a welcome to young
parents and their pre-schoolers at the Pram Service and the elderly
at our coffee mornings. We bury the dead, baptise (Christen) the
young and old, and marry those who are ready to make a life long
commitment to each other. We also teach people about the Christian
faith with courses like theAlpha course.
One of the most important things we do is pray for our community. We
do this in public in our Sunday worship, we do this in small groups that
meet every week to pray and study, and we do this as private
individuals wherever we live. If you would like us to pray for you or
your family, you can leave us a note in either of the churches, or you
can email your request for prayer to me (email below).
Perhaps there is some other way that you would like to see us
reaching into the community. We are always looking for new ways to
serve the community – and we are always looking for new people
who would like to help us to do that, too! If you feel that you can help
with some children's work, the coffee morning, the choir, the church
flowers, the lent lunches that will be coming along in the next few
weeks, then do get in touch.
With every blessing
A word from the minister:
We started this year with a reminder that
our true identity has nothing to do with
how we see oursleves or how we feel about
ourselves. If we find our identity in God,
that puts an end to the rat race of trying to
gain the approval of others. It saves us from
the pressure of having to earn it through
hard work, achievements, rank, promotions,
status, education, wealth, property, or
relationships. It delivers us from the drive to
win the approval, admiration, respect, or
even the fear of others. It saves us from
being slaves to what we can own or possess,
collect or create or consume.
The message of the Gospel is not “Get your
act together.” It is “God will make you a new
person, he will give you a new life.”
Today Jesus says: “If you’re sick and tired of living
in that mess, if you are willing to come to Me, I
will forgive you your sin, I’ll wash you in My
blood, I’ll sanctify you by My Spirit, I’ll justify
you by My Word, I’ll regenerate your heart and
renew your mind. I will give you of My own
Spirit, and translate you into the Kingdom of My
Father where you will become an heir of My
Father and a joint-heir with Me. We’ll live in the
Kingdom of God together forever.” (from author
Ed Cole.)
That has to be good news in anyone’s book!
CANCER SUPPORT
YELDHAM & DISTRICT CANCER SUPPORT GROUP
The group held its first meeting of the year by setting some goals that will be
both achievable and satisfying. One was to sort out the old family
photographs and create some albums for the younger family members.
Others had ideas such as small gardening projects or books they always
meant to read.
We continue to provide friendly companionship as well as tea, coffee and
nice biscuits. So, if you are a cancer patient, in or beyond treatment, a carer,
or bereaved by cancer, you are welcome at The Reading Room, Great
Yeldham at 10.30-12 on the third Thursday of every month. Next meeting is
16th February.
WOMEN’S GROUP
Castle Hedingham Women's Group
The next meeting is on Friday February 17th at the Memorial Hall,
Castle Hedingham, starting at 7.45pm. The original speaker very sadly
passed away over the Christmas period, so there is a change to the
printed program.
One of our long-term favourite speakers, Paula Short, has very kindly
agreed to come to our meeting and will present her talk entitled
'Josephine Baker – An American in Paris'. Apparently Ms Baker was
quite a character and, as well as being an entertainer, was also a
devoted Civil Rights Activist and WWII heroine. She became wildly
popular in France during the 1920s as a dancer and, despite her death
over 40 years ago, remains a popular icon.
This promises to be a fascinating insight into an amazing person's life
and character. Guests are always welcome, so why not come along for
this talk and see if you like us as a group? Contact Ann on 01787
469719 for any information about the group.
As we are now in 2017, Hilda and I are organising coach trips for the new
season. The first planned trip is on Tuesday 16th May. We are going to
Stody Lodge Gardens, near Holt in Norfolk. At that time of year the
gardens are a blaze of colour from the exceptional rhododendron and
azalea collection of over 200 varieties. Areas in the garden include 'The
Azalea Walk', 'Woodland Walk', 'Sunken Garden' and 'Secret Garden'.
There are many images on their website and Hilda has some
photographs.
The cost is £25 per person, including coach, entrance to and a cream
tea in, the gardens. We leave the Shell garage at 9am, then pick-up at
the Bell and Memories. We stop en route at Swaffham, arriving there at
10.45am. Leave Swaffham at 12.45pm and arrive at Stody at 1.30pm.
Time to wander and admire, plus the organised cream tea, before
leaving at 5pm.
Please contact Ann on 01787 469719 or Hilda on 01787 460876 to
enquire or to book.
Hedingham Heritage Society - Our next meetings:
Butterflies of East Anglia – an illustrated talk by Mark Wood, lepidopterist
and chair of Butterfly Conservation
Meeting – 7.45pm – Thursday 2nd February – Castle Hedingham
Memorial Hall
The Heritage Society's February meeting welcomes butterfly expert Mark
Wood to talk on the state of butterflies in our area. More than three-quarters
of the UK butterflies have declined in the last 40 years with some common
species suffering significant slumps. A number of widespread species such
as the Wall, Essex Skipper and Small Heath now rank amongst the most
severely declining butterflies in the UK. Conservation efforts have helped to
arrest some of this decline and Mark will be referring to projects in Essex
and Suffolk as well as informing us about butterfly identification and
ecology.
SCOUTS
Majendie Explorer Scout Unit
We held our annual presentation evening on Wednesday 11th
January at Wooding Lodge and it was well attended with over 60
parents, scouts and invitees attending. We started with a brief update
on numbers and then looked at what we had done in 2016. That is
quite a lot and all of the activities like Southern 50, Badminton, hikes,
rock climbing, kayaking etc you will have read about in the last year.
We then presented year badges, hikes and nights badges before
concluding the giving of awards with the Scouting awards and the
Duke of Edinburgh awards.
Chief Scout Platinum and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards were
presented to Abbie Stoney, Abbi Craig, Isabella Ottevenger and
Lewis Craig, Chief Scout Diamond and Silver Duke of Edinburgh
awards were presented to Natasha Hill, Kirsty Page and Holly Smith.
All a culmination of months of volunteering, sport and skill; plus the
expeditions for each section.
Since the evening Daisy Partridge has achieved her Diamond and
Silver Award and hopefully within a month we should have some
more success.
The evening finished with a presentation of many of the activities we
have done in 2016 put together byAdam ranging from Morris dancing
to the North wales trip.
Over the next month we are playing badminton, celebrating both
Burns night and the Chinese New Year, participating in the Southern
50 in the Chilterns and looking forward to longer evenings.
PARISH COUNCIL
Parish of Castle Hedingham
NEWS FROM CASTLE HEDINGHAM PARISH COUNCIL
JANUARY 2016
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Councillors wish all parishioners a happy and healthy 2017. Parish
Council meetings take place at the Castle Hedingham Club, usually on
the 4th Monday of the month, starting at 7.45pm. A public forum is
available at every meeting, when residents can speak for up to 3
minutes on any issue of concern or interest to them. Advance notice of
anyone wishing to speak is helpful but not essential – just turn up! Our
annual parish meeting in 2017 will be held at the Memorial Hall on
Tuesday 9th May, starting at 8pm. This is when we review the work
done by the Parish Council over the past year. Our District and County
Councillors usually attend this meeting to report on their work.
Everyone is welcome to any Parish Council meeting, we would be
pleased to see you there.
BDC LOCAL PLAN AND VILLAGE OPEN SPACES
The Parish Council does not meet in December, but this does not mean
the work stops. We have been working on discussions with Braintree
District Council about the strip of land they own next to the Playing Field
at New Park. Several attempts have been made by the Parish Council
to take out a long-term lease on this piece of land so we can put a small
amount of play equipment there, but so far requests have been refused
by Braintree District Council.
Castle Hedingham was on the agenda for the BDC Local Plan Sub-
Committee meeting on 10th November. A webcast of the Castle
Hedingham discussions at the meeting can be found at
http://braintree.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/252024. At
this meeting a proposal was made to remove the “informal recreation”
22
designation from the BDC land at New Park, and our District and Parish
Councillors challenged this proposal. The decision has now been
deferred to a later Local Plan Sub-Committee meeting, probably in
February 2017. Our District and Parish Councillors plan to attend and
speak at that meeting.
VILLAGE DEFIBRILLATORS
We are applying for funding for a number of defibrillators for the village,
one to be housed in our adopted telephone box at St James Street. If
anyone has any views on a good location for other defibrillators in the
parish, please contact the Parish Clerk. Every second counts with this
life-saving equipment and we want it to be readily accessible to all and
easy to use in an emergency situation.
FUNDING FOR VILLAGE PROJECTS
Residents are reminded that Castle Hedingham Parish Council has a
grant awarding policy and can make funding available to local groups or
individuals to support projects which benefit our local community. It is
simple to apply by contacting the Parish Clerk in writing at
castlehedinghamparishclerk@gmail.com or at 25 Bayley Street CO9
3DG. The full policy is available to view on the parish website at
www.castlehedingham.org. The process is intended to be as informal
as possible, please contact the clerk if you have any questions.
VILLAGE EVENTS CALENDAR
A Google calendar has been set up on the website
www.castlehedingham.org for village groups and organisations to
publicise and co-ordinate their events to avoid clashes of dates. It is
free and simple to use - secretaries and publicity officers of village
groups or clubs are asked to contact the Parish Clerk at
castlehedinghamparishclerk@gmail.com to be given access to add and
edit their own events on the calendar.
by the Chairman as a correct record.
163. Matters arising from those minutes. There were no matters arising.
164. Chairman's Report
Cllr R Volkwyn wished everyone a Happy New Year. He said the Christmas tree had
been a success and thanked Cllr S Metson for supplying the electricity.
165. Youth Council Report. There was no report as there is not a representative from the
Parish Council.
166. County Councillor's Report - Cllr D Finch wished everyone a Happy, prosperous
and pleasant year. He spoke on the following topics:
a. Social Care
Cllr D Finch explained that the government had given ECC the ability to raise a Social
Care precept but Essex have an older population that is growing, 22% of the population
is over 65. This puts pressure on the budget in terms of social care. He feels this precept
is unfair on home owners/occupiers as it is essentially another tax and taxing locally is
wrong. ECC have had to save 106 million pounds and have looked at ways to re-shape
services rather than cut any.
b. Education
Cllr D Finch said ECC were investing 70 million pounds in school building plans, it is a 10
26
year plan.
c. Highway Maintenance
ECC will pay 65 million pounds each year for the next 3 years on Highway maintenance
and road resurfacing.
d. Digital Age
ECC was looking at ways and means to move the Council into the digital age.
e. Devolution
Information on devolution was quiet at the moment but Cllr D Finch was expecting the
Government to raise the subject again and when it does ECC will be ready. Cllr D Finch
praised Sible Parish Council, he said it is well run, good humoured and gets the business
done.
Cllr R Volkwyn then asked Cllr H Johnson to speak.
Cllr H Johnson reported that there were a number of scams around involving computers
and phones. He warned residents to be vigilant regarding access being gained via
windows. He questioned the purpose of the camera that is on a pole near the football
ground. The clerk will ask Highways.
167. To receive minutes of the Planning Committee meeting held 9th December 2016
The minutes having been circulated were accepted in lieu of a report
168. To receive the minutes of the Finance Committee meeting held 9th December 2016
The minutes having been circulated were accepted in lieu of a report.
169. To consider the budget and precept for 2017-2018
The clerk explained the ring fenced reserves which are ear marked for projects.
Cllr H Johnson said that a diligent Council should be commended and not criticised.
The clerk explained that the Localism Fund Entitlement had decreased over the years
from £18,712 in 2013/14 to £7,649 for 2017/18 in this time the precept had only been
increased once, for 2018/19 it would be £3,825 and after that it would be nil.
Cllr P Gammon said a gradual rise in the precept rather than a large increase was
sensible.
The Finance Committee recommended the budget which has been circulated to all Cllrs.
It was proposed by Cllr J Skittrall, seconded by Cllr P Gammon and carried unanimously
that the budget is approved and that SHPC precepts for £97386.00 for 2017-2018. The
precept form was duly completed, signed by the Chairman and countersigned by the
RFO
170. To receive the Accounts for payment. Appendix 1
Cllr G Jefferson proposed the accounts be approved and paid, Cllr D Holmes seconded,
the motion was carried
171. Any other business
Cllr P Sarel asked if any more could be done to support the Post Office, the family own
the building, the Post Office is planned to move into the Londis garage and be staffed
through the Londis staff. He felt it is a very unfair situation for the Postmaster and his
family. Cllr R Volkwyn explained the consultation period had now closed; the Parish
Council had responded to the consultation and received communication back.
The meeting closed at 8pm
ALDERFORD MILL, SIBLE HEDINGHAM. CO9 3HX
The end of one season, the start of another
The Friends of Alderford Mill ended 2016 season of openings with a
very successful Autumn Craft Fair on Sunday 9th October. We had
more than 200 visitors to the Fair who were able to browse around
the stalls set up on the ground floor and many enjoyed a drop of
mulled cider to ward off the chill. We thank everyone who came to
the Fair and to the stall holders for making it a successful day.
Looking back, we have had a very successful season with a large
number of visitors to the Mill. We are pleased that a number of
visitors came from some distance away, in this country and from
abroad, as well as many local people. The highlights of the season
were the Tea on the Miller's Lawn in August and the National Mills
weekend in May.
We shall be opening the Mill in 2017 on the second Sunday of each
month through the summer from April. Details of the openings and
any special events will be in the Parish Magazine from month to
month. We hope that you will come to the Mill to explore this
fascinating, historic building and to find out about milling in the village
over the centuries. In the meantime, if you are interested in joining
the Friends of Alderford Mill to help with looking after the building and
WOMENS INSTITUTE
Sible Hedingham WI
Hello everyone - it's hard to believe that February is here -
the time seems to fly past these days just shows how busy
we all are, especially in the W.I.
This year is the Centenary of the Essex Federation; a lot of
events have been planned I will give details of these in the coming months.
In November our speaker Lisa Andress gave an extremely informative and
interesting presentation about the way in which she had developed and
designed paper based flowers. She brought along a number of excellent
examples, members were able to have a try and with her help produced
some good results.
In December we all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas lunch at Wildens
Restaurant, Bocking - it was a great way to end the year.
After lunch our President, Maureen Lofting, presented Jackie Hawkes, the
overall winner of the monthly competitions, with the Margaret Tanner Dish
and Jean Wells and Maureen herself the winners of the monthly flower
competitions were presented with the Stella Preston Bowl. Well done to
them and all the runners-up; members will have to up their game this year.
Our speaker this month will be Angela Clarke giving a talk entitled “Alive
and Kicking” about the various traditions of Morris Dancing interspersed
with dancing demonstrations. Gosh this should be fun, hope we are not
expected to have a go - ha!
The competition will be “Dancing Shoes”.
Please remember we welcome new faces so feel free to come along to any
of our meetings we are very friendly and there is always an opportunity to
have a chat during tea break and of course enjoy the lovely cakes etc that
our members provide.
Just a reminder we meet every third Monday 7.30pm at the Sible
Hedingham Baptist Church.
Hi everyone gosh Christmas seems so long ago, the snowdrops are
already appearing in our gardens they are such a welcome sight -
makes us feel that Spring isn't too far away.
I am so pleased to say that we all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas
Afternoon Tea at the Poplar Nurseries Marks Tey, there were so
many cakes most of us were given a box to take some home.
As I said in my last report there will not be any meetings in January
and February so we look forward to returning on March 9th for a talk
by Peter Miller of Kings Seeds. I am sure he will give us tips on how
to make our gardens look more beautiful for the coming months.
These meetings are held every second Thursday 2pm at the
Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham - we hope you will come along and
join us, there is always time during tea to have a chat and an
opportunity to have a look at the sales table where there is usually
marmalade, jams, honey and eggs - all locally produced.
We have talks on Scents of the Garden andAWorld of Dahlias inApril
and May, a Plant Sale on June 3rd and many trips during the Summer
UNSUNG HEROES
Help us discover our district's unsung heroes
To mark the incredible dedication of volunteers within our district,
Braintree District Council, in partnership with Braintree District Voluntary
Support Agency (BDVSA), have launched a brand new awards scheme
'The Braintree District Volunteers Awards'.
Nominations are now open for residents and groups to celebrate the
good that goes on in our communities. The awards are made up of six
categories all designed to celebrate the effort of volunteers who make
contributions to their community.
Nominating is easy – it can be done easily online:
www.braintree.gov.uk/VolunteersAwards. Or you can call 01376 552525 to
receive a paper version.
The award categories are:
Young Volunteer Award
Long Service Award
Inspirational Role Model of the Year Award
Going the Extra Mile Award
Fundraiser of the Year Award
Volunteer Group of the Year Award
Cllr Peter Tattersley, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities,
said: “We wanted to find a way – along with the BDVSA - to say thank
you as a community to those who dedicate their time, skills and care day
in and day out . We want residents to live well in healthy and resilient
communities where residents feel supported and we can't do that without
our unsung heroes who work quietly behind the scenes improving
people's quality of life without seeking reward.”
Rachel Fahie, CEO of BDVSA said “By supporting local groups and
charities, I know the great depth of goodwill and community spirit shown
by many people throughout the whole of the Braintree District. With these
new awards, we want to recognise their outstanding contributions to the
community.”
st
Nominations close on 1 March, with judging taking place during March.
Award winners will be invited to a civic reception with the Chairman of the
Council in April 2017.
LIBRARY
Friends Groups – Press Release
Libraries are wonderful community spaces that offer a huge range of
services to meet the needs of their communities, but we want to do
more. Friends Groups are a way for people to support their local
libraries and let us know what they want for their community, giving
us the opportunity to make libraries even more amazing.
By joining a Friends Group people will be able to;

Meet others who have a passion for their local library.
Offer their library feedback and suggestions about how best
to meet community needs.
Be ambassadors for their library – raising their profile at local
meetings and events.
Friends groups are much like a PTA (Parent Teacher Association),
there to assist with enabling libraries to offer additional resources
and improved services to their local communities, while forging new
links within them.
We are starting to develop Friends Groups in two of our smaller
libraries, Sible Hedingham and West Mersea, with a view to creating
more across the County.
If you are interested in finding out more about Friends Groups and
how you could be involved contact the library on;
Alternatively, email Jo.norris@essex.gov.uk
