CONGRATULATIONS, YOU’RE GETTING HITCHED!
now what?
So you’ve decided to spend your life together! Congrats, you two! Now . . . Let the planning commence!
As you hone in on your date, venue & major vendors, a crucial part of this initial phase is selecting your
wedding photographer.
How do you find the perfect person for the job? And what makes a skilled wedding photographer, anyway?
Over the years, we’vew been asked this question A LOT & have found these three simple guidelines to be
most helpful:
MAKE a list.
check it TWICE.
What are the five most
important elements of your
wedding day? The formal
portraits? The spontaneous
moments? The details? Your
friends & family?
Sit down together & clarify
what they are. Having this
in mind when you begin the
search for a photographer
will guide your initial
conversations with potential
vendors & provide a
guidepost when examining
portfolios & previous work.
WORK WITH AN established
wedding PHOTOGRAPHER.
Wedding photography is everything from
portraiture to documentary photography.
While it can be an appealing option, a
hobbyist friend or family member may not
have the chops to cut it.
Think of the many events-within-the-event
at a wedding: the preparation & getting
ready, the ceremony & reception, the
dinner, the cake cutting, the dancing. Your
photographer should be able to improvise
the unexpected, navigate the sensitive &
work with expediency without being rushed
– or, worse, rushing you!
When it comes to your wedding day, you
need a pro.
THE secret sauce?
personal RAPPORT.
Developing a close working
relationship with your
photographer early on will
lead to the strongest images.
Think about it: to trust your
photographer is to invite
him or her into your world.
Having someone you can rely
on will give you permission to
be more relaxed, more
candid, more yourselves.
And it will show.
Allow yourselves to be fully
vested in the moment. It will
only last so long.
A wedding is a flash in time, but a memory forever. Carpe diem & capture it well!
about
DEV KHALSA
When you see a picture you like, what about it moves you? For me, it’s always the story it tells. Over the years,
I’ve found that the best images are the ones with a ton of heart. More often than not, they’re taken in the
unscripted, in-between moments, moments that catch us off-guard or when we are most ourselves. So often,
the color & quality of a relationship between two people reveals itself in the stuff of the everyday: in physical
language, in repeated gesture, in reaction & response. What the naked eye construes as ordinary becomes,
from behind the lens, profound.
* * *
In college, I enrolled in the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. The program aims to
document Maine’s culture through writing & photography. My subject was a retired Union Pacific Railway
Engineer named Pete Reny who restored antique Fords.
That semester, I spent crisp winter days in Pete’s dusty shop, watching the daylight shift as he worked. Over
the course of several months, I photographed him as he meticulously restored every detail of an old Model
T. When, after the long Maine winter, Pete took his newly restored Model T for its first spin, I was there with him
to document it, perched atop the backseat of the old car, my lens focused on his expression in the rearview
mirror & his worn gloves on the steering wheel.
When the program had ended, I realized I had gained so much more than a technical knowledge of photography
& a boxful of prints. Those months with Pete had given me a window into how he saw & experienced the world,
what pained & pleased him, what gave him pause. It shifted everything for me, & I knew I’d found my calling.
Since then, photography has taken me all over the map. From Santa Fe to Sun Valley, from a profession in
photojournalism to a life as a studio & small business owner, photography has given me the opportunity to
connect with people from all walks of life.
Since moving to the Wood River Valley with my husband 15 years ago, I have grown to love being part
of such a close-knit community. For me, the Valley isn’t just a locus for creation & artistic growth; it’s also a
place where people continue to invest in & forge lasting relationships with each other. When the studio was
launched in 2006, those relationships became the backbone of my business. Now, over ten years later, they
continue to inspire me & fuel my work.
* * *
Life is measured in milestones: weddings, graduations, the birth of a child. Being asked to document those
memories for my clients is an invitation into their world. For me, photography is more than just clicking a button
& capturing a pretty picture. It is, first & foremost, an exercise in observation & empathy.
As a professional photographer, my aim is to capture the nuance of human relationships. As the saying goes, it
takes a village. People need people. Those are the kind of stories that compel me. I am at heart a storyteller.
FIRST things FIRST
When you call or write us, we like to start with a brief chat on the phone to go
through the key points – a little bit about you & your fiancé, your personalities,
your relationship to the Wood River Valley & a general overview of your
wedding.
This first conversation helps us gauge what kind of photography coverage
you’ll need so that we can provide you with some recommendations about
which of our offerings work best for you.
LET’S meet!
From there, we’d love to meet you! Let’s schedule a time to chat here at
studio HQ to discuss the deets in greater detail.
Tell us your story! How’d you two meet? How’d the proposal go down?
What’s your overall vision for the Big Day? This will give us a chance to
answer any questions you have & talk about what’s most important on
your wedding day.
Now for the fun stuff: your engagement pics!
Our wedding coverage always includes engagement portraits: they ’re a
fantastic opportunity to get to know each other & to log some low-key
camera time. (For more info, inspiration + our thoughts on how best to plan
your session, see pages 6-7.)
SPOILER ALERT: No, your engagement pictures don’t have to be cheesy
to be heartfelt! And yes, they’re actually a blast to shoot!

& considered the micro down to every last place setting. Now it’s time to sit
ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS how to rock ’em
We know, we know. Engagement photos have a bad rep.
Let’s be honest: at some point, we’ve all come across the internet’s most cringe-worthy
selects: the under-dressed, overly-posed make-out session on a random urban fire
escape. The Twilight-themed shoot. The use of umbrellas anytime it isn’t raining.
Don’t let the interwebs turn you into a cynic! Engagement sessions are a great low-stress
practice run for the Big Day & can actually be a blast! With just a little planning &
forethought, the shoot can result in some truly great images you’ll love for years. To the
dubious in the crowd: you may be pleasantly surprised by how much mileage you will get
out of this casual but intimate shoot.
Still skeptical? Here are 5 helpful tips on achieving authentic engagement pics.
1. USING props? BE specific!
Tread carefully in prop land! Props can quickly turn complicated, clumsy & just plain awkward. If
you’re going to use them, they should carry special meaning for you as a couple and/or relate to
something that the two of you share.
Still like the idea of having something to do? Drop the prop & do that instead! A physical
activity that you enjoy together - like tennis, hiking or tossing pizza dough - will take your attention
off the camera & lessen your compulsion to pose for every shot. You’ll relax & have more fun (and
(and you might even forget the camera’s there)!
2. LOCATION, LOCATION, location!
If you’ve always loved the idea of equitrekking through Oaxaca but have never been south of the
border, this probably isn’t the time to dust off your spurs & cross it off your bucket list. Choose a
place that resonates with you, someplace you know you’ll feel at home, whether you’ve been there
a hundred times before or are visiting for the first time. Your decision to spend the rest of your lives
together wasn’t an arbitrary one. Your shoot location shouldn’t be either.
3. DON’T BE a poser.
Inspired by a wedding blog or a spectacular photo feed on Instagram? Fantastic! It’s great to
have points of inspiration along the way. Just keep in mind that social media is a rabbit hole. It’s
easy to get swept away by the idea of a pose or shoot that’s highly conceptual & logistically
challenging. Remember: the point is to be comfortable & authentic, not to reproduce someone
else’s Pinterest board.
4. DON’T date yourselves
Imagine flipping through your engagement album with your grandchildren forty years from now &
trying to explain a cheeky (but now lost) reference to Kanye & Kim. Beware the zeitgeist! Subtle
(or not-so-subtle) pop-cultural references, cinematic themes & other obvious temporal or trendy
elements may soon feel passé.
Memories last longer than moments. When it comes to your engagement photos, aim for timeless.
We guarantee you’ll be much happier with where the arrow lands.
5. JUST be you!
Avoid the awkward by being authentic. If you’re silly together, be silly. Or if being romantic is what
comes most naturally, don’t force the funny. You’ve got nothing to prove, so just relax & have fun
together. Keep le romance, skip le cheese. Simple authenticity rules!
7

for your consideration
THE CASE FOR A ‘FIRST LOOK’
Do you plan to see each other before the ceremony, or would you like to wait? Before you make your
schedule, this is something you’ll want to consider. Though you might initially err on the side of tradition &
think you’d like to wait to see each other until you walk down the aisle, here are a couple of pros to seeing
each other beforehand (a.k.a. the ‘Reveal’ or ‘First Look’ in photographer speak):
1
2
3
TAKE FIVE.
A First Look is one way to share an intimate moment with each other before the ceremony. Your wedding
is a day full of excitement, but it also comes with lots of emotion. Seeing each other before the ceremony
just might calm those Big Day jitters & be a breath of fresh air. Come together for a second & just be.
TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE (YES IT IS).
If you opt for a First Look, we’ll do many of the Mr. & Mrs. photos before the ceremony, giving us the freedom
to visit multiple locations & play a little more! If your couple portraits are among the most important
aspects of your Big Day, it’s definitely worth the pre-nuptial Reveal. Of course, we will still be sure to take
a few images of the two of you alone after the ceremony to capture the excitement of the moment.
RECEPTION-READY!
If you’ve gotten most of your couple portraits (& maybe even some of your formal family photos &
wedding party shots) taken care of before the ceremony, you’ll have more time & opportunity to spend
time mixing & mingling with friends & family at the reception. Which means you can let loose a little sooner
& wear your party hats longer!
That said, this is YOUR wedding day. Whatever makes you most comfortable & lives up to your dreams is the
route you should take. No matter what you choose, we’re here to make it right for you!
THE LITTLE THINGS
Whether you’ve single-handedly pulled it off or had a little help along the way, chances are, a lot of
time & thought have gone into all the details of your wedding.
From the specialty cocktail you concocted for the reception to your letter-pressed programs &
handwritten place cards, from the gown first worn by your grandmother on her wedding day to the
handmade suit tailored especially for your Big Day, all sorts of details will pop up in the planning.
Let’s be sure to capture all that creativity! As you get closer to the Big Day, keep an ongoing list of
those details & share them with us. We’ll make sure they don’t get lost in the shuffle.
THE HAPPY COUPLE
notes FROM THE field
When done right, your Mr. & Mrs. photos can be a welcome break amid
an otherwise bustling & chaotic day. Enjoy yourselves & be who you are together.
Have fun ideas or inspired by something you’d like to try? Been building that
Pinterest board since you were 13? Share your inspiration with us! This is a
collaboration, after all, & we want to get a clear sense of your style!
Just remember: a wedding day is a moveable feast. Be mutable & don’t get
pigeonholed trying to replicate a spread from the recent issue of Brides magazine.
Instead, let’s take those ideas & make unique images all our own.
CEREMONY MOMENTS
From the strut down the aisle to the I DOs to the first kiss, your
ceremony will come & go fast. Make like a Boy Scout & be
prepared! Here are some helpful hints on how to get the
most out of your ceremony shots:
1
2
3
CHECK IT. Ask guests to check their mobile devices
at the door. Illuminated phone screens will clutter
otherwise incredibly sentimental & emotional images.
HIDE IT. Consider ways of masking any unsightly stuff
like mic cords & lighting equipment to help keep your
images as clutter-free as possible.
EYE IT. As you plan the layout of your ceremony site,
make sure neither of you will be looking straight into the
sun. You’ll enjoy your ceremony more if you can look
into each other ’s eyes without squinting.
THE WEDDING PARTY
Years out in the field have
taught us that simplicity is key
with wedding party portraits. If
you’re doing a First Look, many
of these images can be taken
before the ceremony, giving you
& your wedding party more time
to enjoy the cocktail hour & visit
with other guests.
If you haven’t incorporated
a First Look, we can still take
advantage of the time before
the ceremony to do groomsmen
& bridesmaid photos. For these,
it’s always fun to pick an activity
that you might normally do with
your friends & then just hang &
let us capture the
interactions of the crew.
notes FROM THE field
#1. Don’t drag your wedding
party hither & yon or get too
attached to shooting in a
remote location. We can shoot
all sorts of fun images in a place
that doesn’t require transporting
everyone all over the place.
#2. Help us learn the personality
of your wedding party ahead of
time. As a group, are you rowdy,
silly or more reserved? We want
to capture your relationship with
your closest friends in a way that
represents your style.
20
#3. If you have little children in
your wedding party, consider
what point in the day will work
best to incorporate them into
the larger wedding party
photos. Remember, those little
white dresses might not stay
clean for long!

scenes from the big day
FAMILY SHENANIGANS
Family members who you never
see will be coming from far &
wide to celebrate with you.
Capturing images of everyone
together is important - but it
shouldn’t take forever. We’ll work
together on a plan to keep it
simple & make it fun! Of course,
we’ll also be there to capture
those precious, unscripted
moments with your family
throughout the day.
THE RECEPTION & PARTY
Once the party starts, it shouldn’t stop!
If you’ve got a shot list of informal groupings of friends & fam, this is a great time to capture those
photos. Just be sure you have your planner handy (or a designated wedding elf who knows who
people are, such as a bridesmaid or the mother of the bride) to direct traffic & keep it snappy so
you can get back to the party.
TRICK OF THE TRADE: Avoid group shots standing behind tables with old food!
here in Tulum. So blessed. We were
just going over things & talking about
how incredibly awesome you are. Truly
some of our favorite moments
were spent with you.”
NOTES FROM THE FIELD
preparing for the big day
1
RULES TO LIVE BY
• Relax! Enjoy! Be with each other & present in every moment.
• Keep it simple & stay authentic to your vision.
• Plan whatever you can ahead of time so that you can enjoy yourself
when the time comes.
• Be flexible & willing to roll with last-minute changes.
2
GENERALLY SPEAKING...
• Your wedding is one day, your marriage is forever. We want the
photography to complement the day, not the other way around.
• Posed portraits of the two of you will look much less posed if you
relax, be silly & engage with each other.
• Things take more time than you think. Pad the schedule a little &
give yourself the gift of extra time. Don’t rush. Anticipate taking
your sweet time.
• People need people – & on your Big Day, you’re gonna need them.
Delegate as many tasks to your wedding party, planner & other
helpers to relieve stress.
• Anticipate potentially awkward or sensitive situations with family or
friends. Let us know so we can avoid them or know how to handle them
best on the Big Day.
• Don’t read all the blogs about posing – it’ll only make you feel
self-conscious & stiff!
3
A FEW SPECIFICS
• Consider having the rehearsal dinner two days before the wedding
so people get a chance to recuperate if they have a little too
much fun that night!
• Wedding dresses are hot. Literally. Keep a handkerchief handy for
blotting perspiration.
• Bring an extra pair of comfortable shoes for adventurous photos.
• Consider a trial run with your stylist. Your hair & makeup should be
a slightly fancier take on how you usually style yourself. You want to
look like a little fancier, dressier version of you. Not someone else.
MARCH 2
“Dev, The pictures are AMAZING!
You did such a fantastic job
capturing every special moment,
emotion and feeling of the day.
You fulfilled our every wish & desire
in helping make our day a memory
that will last forever in our hearts.
We absolutely LOVE the slideshow
you put together as well. Greg & I
both grin ear to ear each time
we view it. Trust me, we’ve
replayed it many times.
All I can say is you leave me
speechless with your work, & I wish
we did not live so far apart.
I truly feel we gained a
lifelong friend in you.
