Glenview firefighters take on Northbrook, Northfield, Wilmette
Event raises money
for youth services
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
It was a recipe for a good
time and for a great cause.
The event was the fifth
annual Chili Cook Off and
Trivia Contest benefiting
Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook
and it
was held on Jan. 28 at the
Glenview Park Center.
More than 250 people
paid $10 in advance and
$15 at the door to sample
chili prepared by 11 teams
made up of firefighters from
Glenview, Northbrook,
Wilmette and Northfield.
There were 19 trivia teams
with six to eight members
on each team and their entry
fee of $300 included
chili tasting.
This was the first year
that the event was held
at the Park Center. Previously,
it was held at Youth
Services at 3080 W. Lake
Ave. in Glenview.
“It gets a little bigger
each year, which is why we
moved it,” Youth Services
Executive Director Amy
O’Leary said. “We have
teams from the Wilmette
and Northfield fire departments
competing for the
first time against those from
the Glenview and Northbrook
fire departments for
the Chili Cauldron Trophy
and People’s Choice Award.
“Our Special Events Coordinator,
Karen Paszkiewcz,
has been in charge of
putting it on since its inception.
Last year we grossed
around $12,000. This year
we hope to gross more. All
of the proceeds go directly
to Youth Services and the
programs we provide. Anywhere
between 1,200 and
1,500 ranging in age from
5 to 20 pass through our
doors every year.”
Youth Services is a nonprofit
agency devoted to
the mental health, character
development and physical
well-being of boys and
girls and young men and
women in North Shore
communities. Its clinical
staff works with young
people suffering from depression,
anxiety, bipolar
disorders, eating disorders;
victims of cyber-bullying;
and those with serious issues
in their home life.
Dan Fraser, vice president
of the Youth Services
Board of Directors, served
as the master of ceremonies
while the Chicago Highlanders
Pipes and Drums
provided traditional Scottish
bagpipe music prior
to the judging of the Chili
Cook Off and the Trivia
Contest competition.
The cook-off judges
were Mike Tarjan, Ph.D.,
assistant principal of student
activities at Glenbrook
North; John Hinkamp, a
Glenview Village trustee;
A.C. Buehler, a Northbrook
Village trustee; Tom Klise,
president of the Youth Services
Board; Kevin Kachmark,
representing Glenview
Making Life Better;
Jerry Doetsch, Glenview
Business Person of the
Year; and Avery Ingles, a
9-year-old Pleasant Ridge
fourth-grader who was the
designated Youth Services
All-Star.
After the judges sampled
the chili from each of the
11 firehouses, they voted
Wilmette Station 26 at
Lake Avenue and Green
Bay Road the winner of
the Chili Cauldron Trophy.
Northbrook Station
10 at 650 Huehl Road was
the second-place finisher
and Wilmette Station 27 at
Lake Avenue and Illinois
Road came in third.
The members of the winning
Wilmette Station 26
team were Scott Paczosa,
Guillermo Bonilla, Ryan
Kolze, Dave Grajewski and
Dan Walters.
The recipe for their
4-gallon “Pot-of-Meat”
consisted of 16 pounds of
sirloin, 5 pounds of Italian
sausage, 3 pounds of apple-wood
smoked bacon,
8 pounds of yellow onions,
4 pounds of bell peppers,
3 pounds of roast peppers,
2 pounds of roasted tomatoes,
and various spices
and seasoning.
“We did test runs on a
couple of shifts,” Paczosa
said.
“And then we tweaked
it,” Walters added.
The Trivia Contest consisted
of six categories
— music, history and geography,
sports, science,
entertainment and a little
bit of everything. There
were eight questions in
each category and one
point was awarded for each
correct answer.
Teams could purchase
one equivalent to a golf
“mulligan” in each round
for a $10 donation to Youth
Services.
The Gentlemen’s Society
was the Trivia Contest
winner with 33.5 points.
Standard Deviation earned
second with 31 and the
Glenview Grind and GEF
Flunkies tied for third with
30.
The wife-and-husband
members of the winning
team were: Michelle and
Bill McGowan, Sandy and
Craig Morse; Allison and
Don Wilbon; and Mari Toni
and Dave Kane.
Standard Deviation was
the runner-up for the fourth
year in a row. The team
was made up of a group
of Northwestern alumni
— four fraternity brothers,
two of whom were married
to Northwestern graduates,
and two other wives kiddingly
referred to as “the
oddballs.”
Mittens is an
8-month-old
kitten who is
cute as a button
and a rascal
too. The Horwitz family adopted him from BAARK
rescue back in August after meeting him at his
his small size does not stop him from climbing on
anything and everything he can reach. He jumps
really high and has grown over the past four
months! He loves to climb on your shoulder (like a
parrot) and try to reach the ceiling fan pull cords.
Jan. 15 to raise a glass,
remember the good times
and get a little bit misty
in memory of their old pal
Marty Karowsky.
A charismatic fixture at
the Glenview bar for much
of the past three decades
and its owner since 1997,
Karowsky died Nov. 11,
2016, at age 66.
“His generosity and
his good spirit brought
people in here. He had a
lot of friends and many of
them are here today. It is
a lovely thing,” longtime
employee Ann Miles said.
“He would have wanted
this. He loved a party.”
Karowsky grew up in
McHenry, and St. Mary’s
classmate Jerry Dold recalled
how they were often
assigned to stay after
school and clean floors and
clap the erasers.
“He was a great guy,”
Dold said.
At Potato Creek Johnny’s,
he worked as a doorman
and then became a bartender
and manager. After
a stint owning a bar elsewhere,
he returned to the
bar in 1997 and purchased
it.
Until recently, he was
working the night shift,
sometimes putting his special
spin on tuna, sausage,
lasagna and other specialties,
and every now and
then enjoying his favorite
drink — a Grand Marnier.
By all accounts, he was
a good boss: kind to his
employes, and pleased to
go out of his way to help
people who maybe needed
a little push.
“He was just so lovable,
so jolly most of the time.
Everybody loved Marty,”
said Kathy Karowsky, who
now owns the bar with her
husband Todd. “You always
heard stories about
how he took people in and
took them under his wing.
He would find these people
and offer them jobs. He
was a big teddy bear.”
That warmth extended
to his customers, many of
whom have been bending
elbows at the bar for decades.
“I called him Papa Bear,”
said Elizabeth Graydon,
a patron since 1987. “He
helped me through really,
really rough times, opening
up his big arms and
saying ‘come on in here,’
and he’d squeeze me
tight and the world would
be OK as long as he was
there. Whenever I needed
a friend I could confide in
him, and he would always
steer me right.”
Dating back to when
it was called Calamity
Jane’s, Potato Creek
Johnny’s has been a place
where blue collar, white
collar and folks on the
margins, too, have shared
a common affection for
the “old school” neighborhood
bar, and Karowsky
has been an integral part of
that story.
“This has always been
a nice place to come and
see everybody. Everybody
came here, and still do to
some extent,” said Randy
Schilling, who has been
a patron since “Day One”
(1978).
When Marty was a bartender
“everyone came to
see him,” Schilling said.
“He was always fun, and
he treated the gals, no matter
who it was, like they
were dynamite. That’s the
type of guy he was.”
“Marty was the greatest,”
Scott Schlief said. “I
will always feel like he
was still in that bar with
us all sharing the good
times.”
“He was always there
for you, he had funny jokes
to tell, and he made you
laugh,” said Wendy Newcomer,
whose been an occasional
patron for 25 years.
“It’s mostly like a family.
And Marty, he was a
staple in this place,” said
Chuck Herbst, a patron
since 1982.
“It’s like Cheers. Everybody
knows everybody,”
said co-owner Todd
Karowsky, who is Marty’s
nephew.
A lifelong bachelor,
Karowsky loved to fish,
particularly in Canada,
and to regale patrons with
his fishing stories, said Bill
Franklin, who has worked
at the bar since 1978.
One of those stories was
illustrated in the form of
a large poster on the wall
across from the bar. There
was Marty, bigger than
life, holding a monster
Northern pike that didn’t
get away, and one simple
message printed across it
that said everything that
needed to be said.
“Marty, We Love You.”

In Memoriam
Mail carrier was ‘like family’ to residents
Matt Yan, Contributing Editor
Residents of the neighborhood
south of St. Norbert
Parish are in mourning
after their beloved
longtime mail carrier suddenly
passed away while
on the job.
Rudy Loosa, 59, died
Jan. 14 of a heart attack
while delivering mail in
his truck in Northbrook,
where he had worked for
more than 18 years.
Loosa, a Glenview
resident for 14 years, was
more than a mail carrier to
the homeowners along his
route. He was a friend.
“He was like a member
of the family, and I don’t
mean just mine, I mean
everyone’s,” resident Scott
Cawley said.
Again and again, Loosa’s
customers spoke of
the generosity, outgoing
personality and kindness
he exhibited on a daily basis.
They said he had an inexplicable
ability to recall
everyone’s names, though
he served hundreds of people
on his route.
He listened to people’s
stories. He helped residents
get into their homes
when they’d locked themselves
out.
“He loved your kids. He
loved your family. He gave
you hugs when someone
died,” said Liz Gan, who
knew Loosa for the entirety
of his tenure in Northbrook.
“He brought birthday
presents. He pet your
dog like it was his own.
“It truly made you feel
like you were his favorite,
and yet everyone felt that
way.”
Neighbors created a
document on OneDrive to
share the many stories of
what set Loosa apart.
There was the time he
stopped in to attend a little
girl’s tea party.
Or the day he helped
some children build snowmen.
And then there were the
days he would pause his
route to shoot some hoops
with kids in the street.
No one could recall a
single bad encounter with
Loosa. He was so wellknown
that even people
who didn’t live in Northbrook
had heard of him.
“Even my mother-inlaw
heard about his death,
and she’s in Florida,”
Andy Roane said. “She’s
Adventures in Glenview
The dead of Glenview
Denny Hebson
Contributing Columnist
Glenview resident
Usually in this column,
I write about
the places in Glenview
where people live.
For this week’s column, I
wanted to write about the
places in Glenview where
people don’t.
Cemeteries.
So on a recent cold,
gray, dreary, miserable
Sunday afternoon — perfect
graveyard weather —
my wife and I bundled up
and set out for a Glenview
cemetery crawl.
Do I take her on the best
dates or what?
Our first stop was the
cemetery across from Immanuel
Lutheran Church
on Chestnut Avenue. It’s
pretty small, maybe 100
graves. And pretty old.
There are headstones from
as far back as 1896. Old
German farm families, no
doubt. Linneman. Brandt.
Burmeister.
If cemeteries creep you
out, this one won’t. It’s
next to the houses in Tall
Trees and has pretty old
stones along with some
new ones. Kind of like a
backyard graveyard.
My mom once told me
this was Glenview’s only
cemetery. But she was
wrong. Which brings us
to our next stop. Sunset
Lawns on Shermer Road,
just north of the new Willow
Creek Church.
Years ago, when this
cemetery opened, it was
the only one in the area
that would accept African
Americans. Many of
them were servants of
rich families in Wilmette,
Winnetka and the rest of
the North Shore. We felt
sad as we walked among
the small markers. Isaiah
of a time we wouldn’t
care to repeat.
Not that it isn’t a lovely
spot. There are big trees
and a large memorial
honoring Russian-Jewish
families in the section
toward the back.
However, Sunset Lawns
did give us our only creepy
experience of the day
when we came across a
freshly dug grave with a
small, ominous black hole
opened in the corner. A
hole just big enough for
something to reach out
and ...
Okay, okay. On to the
next cemetery. Just a few
hundred yards north on
Shermer, St. Peter’s is
actually in Northbrook.
But it’s the most Glenview
cemetery of them all. In
fact, it’s sometimes called
“Rugen’s Cemetery”
because so many members
of that early Glenview
family are buried there.
We counted more
than a dozen stones.
You’ll also find tombstones
marked Pfingsten,
Landwher and Wagner.
It’s half cemetery, half
Glenview street map.
Finally, we made our
way to a busy section of
Lake Avenue, just before
the tollway, where tiny St.
John’s Cemetery sits next
to the Brookview Village
apartment complex.
There isn’t a church in
sight. Who knows, maybe
it’s part of the buildings’
amenities.
Tenants can enjoy our
workout room, free wifi
and their very own cemetery
plot.
It is a nicely maintained
spot, though, and the final
The Rugen graves occupy a section of the cemetery
near St. Peter’s in Northbrook. PHOTOs SUBMITTED
The Sunset Lawns cemetery gave Denny Hebson a chill.
resting place of the oldest
person we found — Sophie
Sebering, who was
born in 1814. She’d be
203 today if she weren’t
hanging out in St. John’s.
There are a few other
old tombstones scattered
about Glenview — in The
Grove and the Glen View
Country Club — but we
decided it was time to get
back to the land of the
living.
And now you know
where all the bodies are
buried.
CHRIS PULLAM
chris@glenviewlantern.com
The end of the winter
sports season is
quickly approaching.
Several sports — wrestling,
girls gymnastics
and boys swimming —
have already reached the
postseason, and the rest
will follow over the next
few weeks.
Both Glenbrook South
and Loyola Academy
have started off strong.
GBS gymnastics set
a school record while
dominating every phase
of the regional, and both
schools will send representatives
to the wrestling
sectional at Barrington
this weekend.
Going forward, GBS
girls basketball, Glenbrook
girls hockey and
Loyola boys basketball
will stand out as teams
to watch, but I expect
every squad covered by
The Glenview Lantern to
excel.
At the beginning of
every season, I write
preview stories of every
single GBS team in order
to familiarize residents,
and myself, with the key
story lines to watch in
the coming months. It’s
my favorite time of the
year, like Christmas times
three.
I usually speak to the
head coach and at least
one captain or senior
from each team. They’re
short stories, and they
usually follow a pretty
basic structure, but it’s
nice putting a voice to
the names I’ll read about
throughout the season.
Coaches often use this
opportunity to point out
ideas for future stories,
such as athletes committing
to college programs,
upperclassmen joining
the team for the first time
or star players returning
from injury.
But oftentimes the best
tips come from the athletes’
parents, who, not so
surprisingly, know their
children best.
In fact, I’ve already received
my first story pitch
regarding the upcoming
spring season, one I
doubt the coach would’ve
mentioned without a little
gentle prodding.
So, as the spring season
approaches, if you know
of any unique angles
related to any GBS or
Loyola teams, feel free
to shoot me an email at
Chris@GlenviewLantern.
com or call me at (847)
272-4565.
And if you’re just as
unfamiliar with the teams
as I am, look for our
previews stories to begin
rolling out near the beginning
of March.
Chasing country dreams
Karabas releases
‘Warehouse Full of
Wishes’ ahead of
album debut
Sarah Haider
Assistant Editor
It all started with a
name.
The song title “Warehouse
Full of Wishes”
came to Chris Karabas —
songwriter, musician and
owner of the Rock House
— when he was sitting by
the fireplace in his writing
room last year. The idea
sparked a desire to write
a country music album
based around those four
words.
“[‘Warehouse Full of
Wishes’] reflected who I
am and defined who I am
as sort of a positive guy
with a lot of dreams that
I’m still chasing,” he said.
Karabas immediately
pulled out his guitar to
write the wealth of songs
inspired by the new title.
Unfortunately, nothing
came to mind. He sat
down with the intention
of writing the songs dozens
of times, each time
feeling the excitement of
his newfound title, and
each time, it seemed the
well of inspiration had
run dry.
The title was not given
up on. Instead, Karabas
decided to search for inspiration
at Music Row in
Nashville, where he originally
developed his song
writing skills after college.
In between mixing
sessions, Karabas went
to a building owned by
the Nashville Songwriters
Association, of which
he is a member, and sat
in an open office, where
the first single “dropped
out of the sky and into his
lap” within 20 minutes.
He rushed over to his
producer, who loved the
song, before calling Glen
Duncan, a Grammy award
winner, and demanding
to meet him at the studio
with every instrument
he had. They spent
the rest of the day building
tracks and recording
songs. They wasted no
time showing off their
new creation in multiple
pitch meetings, where
they received immediate
positive feedback.
The title track, released
on Dec. 29, is the first of
six songs that will be released
every six weeks
before being combined to
form an EP.
This decision stemmed
from Karabas’ desire to
give his audience a steady
drip of content, as well as
cater to the modern music
world of Spotify and Apple
Music. These kind of
decisions have come from
the experience Karabas
has gained over decades
in the industry.
“Back in the ’90s I was
signed to a record label
in Nashville and nothing
ever panned out, so I
moved back to Chicago
and sort of put that career
on the back burner,”
Karabas said. “And then,
flash forward all these
years later, I went in just
to record some stuff for
fun, and the next thing
I know, I’m signed by a
publishing company and
I’m back in the thick of it
now.”
After moving back to
Chicago, he found love,
got married, started a
family and released an
album inspired by having
kids. He also played top
venues, like the House
of Blues, with his former
roots rock band — The
Lucky Jackson Band.
Then he opened the
Rock House in Glenview
and Wilmette, inspired by
his origins in music that
have lead him all the way
to this new album. Karabas
never considered a
career in music until he
attended a Bruce Springsteen
concert during his junior
year of high school.
“It was the first big concert
I went to and when I
saw [it] I realized that is
what I wanted to do, so I
went home the next day
and I taught myself how
to play the piano and it
was all I did for years after
that,” Karabas said.
First, he taught himself
to play “Thunder
Road” by Springsteen.
Afterward, he realized
he learned an enormous
amount about playing the
piano, as well.
He continued to teach
himself the guitar, which
eventually inspired The
Rock House.
“My reward was that
if I practiced really hard
I was able to play my favorite
song, so I decided
to start a school around
that through teaching an
instrument through the
music that the kids like,”
he said. “That’s our philosophy,
and it has proven
to be very successful.”
Now that Karabas has
shared and honed his own
skills as a songwriter and
musician, he is focusing
on releasing self-written
content to bring honest
lyrics to a county scene
that is more obsessed with
drinking beer and driving
trucks. He realizes it’s a
risk, but he isn’t looking
for fame. He is looking to
reach an audience that appreciates
his content.
His current single can
be found on Spotify and
iTunes. Dates for his future
shows can be found
by joining his mailing
list at www.chriskarabas.
com and at www.therockhouseinc.com.
From Page 8
here maybe once or twice
a year. She knows Rudy;
Rudy knows her.”
In a final gesture of love,
homeowners along Loosa’s
route put up red ribbons
on their mailboxes.
“I just went to my mailbox
today and got my mail
and wanted to cry because
it wasn’t his hands that delivered
it,” Gan said Jan.
17. “He’d honk when he’d
drive by. It’s a huge loss.
There will never, ever be
another mailman like him.
“We need to carry on in
our positive, peaceful, happy
way because that’s how
Rudy was. He was never
without a smile or without
a positive thought.”
Cawley said he had a
difficult time telling his
children of Loosa’s passing.
“He was a gift from
God,” Cawley said.
Loosa was born in Chicago
on June 14, 1957, the
third of nine children. He
learned the value of hard
work early on when he had
a newspaper delivery route
as a pre-teen, his family
said.
After Loosa graduated
from Lake View High
School in 1975, he began
working for Let Them Eat
Cake, a local bakery.
He married his high
school sweetheart, Judy, in
1978 at a church in Niles.
They had four children together,
and Rudy worked
his way up at the bakery
from porter to kitchen
manager.
Rudy’s life was not
without its trials. After 19
years working for the bakery,
he was let go when the
business was bought out
by a larger company.
A man of God, Rudy
relied on his faith as he
searched for another job.
“He would say stuff like
‘God will provide,’ ” his
wife said. “He would gather
us and we would pray.
He would go out and do
what he was supposed to do
— he would work hard.”
Fourteen months later,
Rudy’s prayers were answered.
He began working
for the postal service
in Northbrook. The job
helped him and his wife
put their four children
through Christian Heritage
Academy when it
was in Northbrook, and
later when it moved to its
Northfield campus.
Rudy Loosa is survived
by his wife, Judy, and his
four children, Lyssa, Kimberly,
Michael and Jonathan.
European quality served with a smile
Gerhard’s provides
elegant desserts
with a warm
welcome
Sarah Haider
Assistant Editor
Twenty-two years ago,
when Mary Greub decided
to open Gerhard’s Elegant
European Desserts with
her then-fiance, she had no
idea she would end up finding
the love of her life. It
wasn’t a man. It wasn’t the
money from a long-lasting
business. It was the people
who would make her bakery
a second home.
Mary Greub, a Milwaukee
native, previously
sought her passion as an
accounting controller until
she met chef Gerhard
Greub, who earned his culinary
expertise in his homeland
of Switzerland before
opening and cooking in
Four Seasons hotels all
over the world. With Gerhard
Greub’s cooking skills
and Mary Greub’s knowledge
of numbers, they felt
they had the right ingredients
to open a bakery in the
North Shore, where their
clientele would appreciate
the European-style of highquality
products.
“We use only real ingredients,
the same ingredients
you have in your house to
bake, [like] eggs, sugar
and cream,” Mary Greub
said. “[We don’t use] artificial
flavorings, artificial
ingredients or fillers, which
there are generally a ton of
in bakeries [because] they
are very cheap [to] use versus
the real thing.”
Mary Greub, who now
owns the business on her
own, takes the same care in
picking the chefs who bake
the elegant European desserts
fresh every day. The
six-person kitchen crew is
led by chef Sandy Sofere,
Gerhard’s passion fruit mousse ($7.50) is a sweet
and tart dessert made with dark chocolate mousse, a
feuilletine base imported from France and mixed with
pralines. Jacqueline Glosniak/22nd Century Media
who has been with the bakery
for more than 18 years
after working at the Ritz-
Carlton.
Her passion for selling
high-quality baked goods
stems from prioritizing
relationships with customers.
Mary Greub’s previous
boss in accounting often
invited her to sales meeting
to speak with clients.
Two years after opening
Gerhard’s, she realized her
old boss had recognized the
traits that would make her
restaurant successful.
“I wrote him a letter and
said, ‘What you saw in me
starting at 22-years-old, I
didn’t see in myself. And
you were right. I get my energy
from people, not from
numbers.’”
When a group of 22nd
Century Media editors and
I visited the sunny bakery,
Mary Greub regaled us with
stories about her customers.
She told us about “the
breakfast club,” a group
of couples who met at her
shop 22 years ago who
now spend holidays and
vacations together. She introduced
us to a customer
who calls ahead every day
so her decaf coffee is ready
when she arrives.
These connections are
what she loves most about
“I am happy,” Mary
Greub said. “I say to my
daughter when I see the lottery
signs, ‘Even if I won,
I would not sell my business.’
I love my customers.
They are like my family and
friends. I see them everyday.
I know their children.
I know their grandchildren.
It is a community.”
She showed us that sense
of community as she welcomed
us into the shop,
insisting we have a drink
to pair with the baked delicacies.
Winnetka Current Editor
Jacqueline Glosniak tried
hot chocolate made with
Swiss chocolate while I
sampled the bean-roast coffee
with robust flavors that
made it an easy beverage to
drink black.
Then, we dug into one of
the bakery’s signature dishes
and a popular gluten-free
option — chocolate marjolaine
($7.50).
The marjolaine is topped
with a crunchy, ruffled
chocolate garnish that
melts in your mouth. After
you conquer the first layer,
this dish opens to a chocolate
meringue filled with
white chocolate. The delicate
balance of the chocolates
is complemented by
the fresh raspberries.
The dish is one of the
restaurant’s many popular
Valentine’s Day desserts,
along with the dark chocolate
mousse ($7.50).
Before filling up on the
small but substantial marjolaine,
we begrudgingly
pushed it aside and moved
on to the berry tiramisu
($7.50). Little to our surprise
after witnessing the
carefully crafted presentation
of the dessert, the flavor
did not disappoint.
The tiramisu is made
with Galbani mascarpone,
a high-quality cheese direct
from Italy, with vanilla
genoise and roulade filled
with fresh blueberries and
raspberries.
Next, we tried the passion
fruit mousse ($7.50).
The tartness of the fruit
was complemented by the
deeper flavors of the bottom
of the desert, made
with dark chocolate mousse
and a feuilletine base, imported
from France, mixed
with pralines.
Next we tried one of
the bakery’s most popular
dishes.
The croissants are made
fresh daily and sell out fast.
On this day, we were lucky
enough to get the last one.
We understood the hype after
taking our first bite.
The light and fluffy bread
is made by three rounds of
butter folding.
“The butter has to be the
right temperature and you
have to let it rest,” Mary
Greub said. “If it’s too hot,
it mushes. And if it’s too
hard, it doesn’t blend. It has
to be just right.”
Apparently, this batch
was made “just right.”
The restaurant delivers
and can bake large quantities
for parties and gatherings.
It also serves as a
wholesale bakery, catering
to foreign five-star hotels
in Chicago and providing
dessert dishes for many local
restaurants.

“We’ve been a pretty
actually been a huge concern
of ours why we’re
not playing better in the
over too much and we
didn’t shoot it well. And
they had a lot to do with it.
They’re a very, very good
But I’m not upset and I’m
Livatino said his team
“We’re a much better
What made you want to start
playing?
My parents wanted me to play sports.
I played soccer for a year and they wanted
me to branch out more and see other
sports that I could play, so they put me in
basketball.
What do you like most about the
sport?
I really like the competition. With basketball
it’s smaller and I feel closer with
the team. I feel like there is more of a
drive in that sport, which I really love.
What is the best advice you’ve
ever received about the sport?
Hard work beats talent when talent fails
to work hard. I always try to work hard
and do my best and put my best foot forward.
I live by it and I think it’s true.
What’s your favorite basketball
moment?
Beating New Trier in the sectional last
year. It was insane. It was really loud and
a big crowd. Everyone stormed the court
after we won. It was a really big upset.
Any pregame rituals or
superstitions?
Me and my friend, Makayla Stadler, go
to Walgreens and buy Gatorade. I drink an
entire Gatorade before a game and I listen
to music.
Favorite team?
I am die-hard White Sox fan.
Who is a hero of yours?
It would have to be my mom. She is
Varsity Views
an immigrant from the Philippines. She
came here when she was 18 with her family
and they didn’t have a lot. She made
a life for herself by going out on her own
and working hard. I really admire her
work ethic and dedication and her way of
putting her best foot forward and not letting
obstacles get in her way.
What is an item on your bucket
list?
To go to Australia. I really want to do
shark-cage diving.
Advice to kids just starting the
game?
Don’t quit. I wanted to give up because
I wasn’t that good. There was a time when
I was the tallest person and everyone
started to catch up with me. Don’t quit.
Keep going at it. I would have really regretted
it if I had stopped playing and it is
my favorite sport.
If you were a superhero, what
power would you want? Why?
Telekinesis. I feel like it’s underrated because
I would want to control things with
my mind and read people’s minds. I just
want to know what people are thinking.
Coach Talk
Ex-Loyola pitcher goes
from relief to center stage
Jon ‘Coach’ Cohn
Contributing Columnist
Glenview Resident
1,758 miles. Or so
says Google Maps.
That is the
distance from the pitching
mound at the Loyola
Academy baseball fields
to the pitching mound at
Phoenix Municipal Stadium,
home of the Arizona
State Sun Devils.
A long way indeed.
Such has been the
journey for Northwestern
pitcher and Glenview
native Tommy Bordignon,
who found out this past
fall that he is scheduled
to be the opening-night
pitcher for his Northwestern
University team
against one of the most
storied programs in all of
college baseball — Arizona
State.
That is big-time, centerstage
stuff for the young
junior who just a few
years ago was wearing
the maroon and gold and
throwing the small white
pill for the Rambler baseball
squad.
Being named the opening
day starter? Any baseball
fan will tell you, that
is quite an honor. It requires
a confidence shown
by both your coaches and
teammates to be “the guy”
on the hill as you kick-off
the season.
“I am pretty excited,”
Bordignon said. “I had
a really good fall season.
After it was over,
our pitching coach, Josh
Reynolds, came up to me
and said ‘are you ready to
open up for us on Friday
night?’”
Bordignon contained his
excitement long enough to
calmly answer: yes.
But this was an honor
that didn’t come easy.
During his freshman year,
he pitched sparingly and
strictly out of the bullpen.
Last year, a sophomore and
still mostly a reliever, he
had 20 appearances, threw
48 innings, had two saves
and got a couple of starts.
Things were on the
upswing, for sure.
“I prefer to start,” the
longtime Glenview native
said. “My pitching
coach, Josh Reynolds, has
been great with me. Really
improved my mental
aspect of pitching along
with my confidence and
command of the breaking
ball. Those are my biggest
improvements. I’m ready
to go this year.”
Actually, Bordignon’s
journey began long before
Northwestern. He is a
textbook example of the
strength of our Glenview
community baseball
system. He played GYB
house league, then played
Glenview Patriots travel,
and then joined the Glenview
Blaze, for whom he
played many years.
Back then, Bordignon
was known every bit as
much for his prowess as a
shortstop as he was for his
pitching exploits. At shortstop,
he had great hands,
good range and a tremendous
throwing arm.
In fact, at Loyola he
made all-conference —
but as a shortstop and not
as a pitcher.
It was that strong throwing
arm that impressed
then-coach Paul Stevens,
who recruited Tommy.
(He didn’t have to go far.
Stevens is a Glenview
native and helps with the
Blaze baseball program).
The Wildcats wanted
that arm strictly on the
pitching mound. So his
shortstop days were over.
After a strong weightand
strength-training
routine in the off season,
the 6-foot Bordignon now
checks in at a very solid
188 pounds and is much
stronger than his successful
high school days.
As for the Wildcat prospects
this year?
“This is the hardest
working team I have been
around here at Northwestern,”
Bordignon said.
“Everyone is really committed,
and we are really
looking forward to this
season.”
It all starts in Arizona
on Friday, Feb. 17, at
beautiful Phoenix Municipal
Stadium — 1,758
miles from where he
played ball and grew up.
But when he walks to
the mound to take the ball
to open the season, there
is no doubt that Tommy
Bordignon will feel right
at home.
Cohn has a new book published
called “Stuff People
Might Want To Know,” available
at Amazon.com or any
local bookstores. He can be
reached at jcsportsandtees@
Loyola Academy quarterback
Tommy Herion
knew that without playing
tape from his junior year,
landing a major Division I
scholarship offer would be
tricky.
The senior attended numerous
camps over the
summer, including one at
the University of Iowa. On
Jan. 10, he accepted an offer
to be a preferred walkon
there, starting in the
2017 school year. Herion
chose Iowa over a scholarship
offer from the University
of New Hampshire.
“Iowa is close to home,
both my sisters go there
and it just felt like a good
fit,” Herion said.
Herion was forced to
sit out his junior year after
transferring to Loyola
from Notre Dame College
Prep. Due to IHSA rules
about transferring from
one private school to another,
he sat out the 2015
season, giving him only
one season to play and
show his skills on the varsity
level.
“I developed more physically,
but I think I developed
more on the mental
side, just learning more
about the game and our offensive
coordinator Tyler
Vandenberg was extremely
helpful in developing
me,” Herion said. “We run
a college-level offense in
high school, so that’s going
to be helpful going to
the next level.”
“Coach (John) Holecek
runs our program like college
programs do,” Herion
added. “Our weight program
and offseason program
are really good. We
emphasize watching film.
We watch film before
and after practice every
day and we’re supposed
to watch it on our own as
well. Everything is bigger
once you get to college
but the roots at Loyola are
pretty good.”
All Herion did in his
one year as a starter was
lead the Ramblers to their
second straight state title
game while putting up big
numbers. He completed
176-of-286 passes for
2,274 yards and 20 touchdowns
and zero regularseason
interceptions.
“Tommy’s got a great
arm and is very accurate,”
Holecek said. “He’s
got athleticism and he’s a
winner. He doesn’t make
mistakes and that’s what
makes him so good.”

flaunted by Wheeling
and New Trier in the
3A Wheeling Regional,
all three had wrestlers
advance to the sectional
round of competition.
The top three finishers
in each of the 14 weight
classes in the regional on
Saturday, Feb. 4, will compete
on Friday-Saturday,
Feb. 10-11, in the sectional
at Barrington.
GBS qualified five seniors:
Ethan Bond, the
second-place finisher in
the 132-pound class, and
third-place finishers Ben
Schonken (120), Daniel
Pravich (152), Branko Andelkovic
(195) and Alex
Balabanos (285).
Bond (30-8) came close
to emerging as the king of
the 132-pound class, losing
a 3-2 decision to New
Trier senior Nick Elias
for the championship. In
his semi-final match, the
Titans star overwhelmed
the eventual third-place
finisher, Wheeling sophomore
Andy Madrigal, 9-2
and in the quarterfinals he
eliminated Buffalo Grove
senior Lucas Ramirez on a
fall at 1:20.
It took Pravich (32-7)
only 44 seconds to topple
New Trier junior Bayne
Kiser in their third-place
match. He also won his
consolation quarter-final
match on a fall, putting
down Palatine senior Jose
Aragon at 1:42.
“It was nice finishing
third but I wish I would
have been in the finals,”
Pravich said. “Last year I
was the second seed in the
regionals but I lost in the
semis and then lost in the
third-place match. I had
the adrenaline pumping
(in the third-place match)
because I didn’t want the
same thing to happen this
time. I knew he was successful
and I didn’t want
him to get a fluke pin so
I decided to do what I do
best — I came out fast and
pinned him.”
Balabanos (28-10) was
a 4-0 winner by decision
over Palatine senior Sammy
Cercas in their thirdplace
encounter.
“I was able to use my
speed to get around him
and get two takedowns,”
said Balabanos, who was
a starting guard on the offensive
line for the GBS
football team. “Coming
out of the football season I
weighed 255 pounds and I
tried to get back down to
220, which was my weight
last year. I only drank water
and I wasn’t eating
very much and I felt weak
so after the Russ Erb tournament
I made the decision
to bump up in class.
Now I weigh 239 but
I’m an undersized heavyweight
compared to everybody
else — the average
(weight) is around 265.”
The Spartans qualifiers
were senior Jacob Weingardt,
the 285-pound
runner-up, and third-place
contestants freshman Kazden
Orshoski (106), sophomore
Cam Casey (182)
and senior Brandon Friedman
(220).
Weingardt (27-10) won
two decisions — besting
Wheeling junior Matt
Killian 3-1 in the quarterfinals
and Cercas 3-0 in
the semis — before Fremd
senior Zachery Nemec
pinned him 45 seconds
into their 285-pound
championship match.
“I was the last seed in
the bracket and in my first
match I felt nervous,” said
the underdog from GBN.
“I wound up winning because
I put out everything
I had. In the semis, my opponent
was fresh out of
the gate because he had a
bye in the quarters, but my
theme going in was just
how bad I wanted it and I
got it.”
Teammate Friedman
(25-9) said a little bit of
luck contributed to his
pinning of Fremd senior
Connor McMillin at 1:47
in their 220-pound, thirdplace
match: “He was trying
to turn me and I got
lucky and I wound up on
top.”
Casey (15-16) also finished
third thanks to a fall.
The 182-pound Spartan
sophomore upended Palatine
senior Billy Ilkka at
3:17.
“I thought my first takedown
was the key,” Casey
said.
Orshoski (17-15) made
an impressive regional debut
in finishing third in the
106-pound class.
The GBN freshman
pinned Buffalo Grove
freshman Alec Dishchuk
at 2:49 in consolation
semifinal action, then did
it to Hersey freshman Zac
Joyce at 3:29 of the thirdplace
match.
Qualifying for the Ramblers
were senior Andrew
Gonzalez, who lost by
fall to New Trier senior
Jake Lowell at 1:53 in the
title match after winning a
7-4 decision over Andelkovic
in the semi-finals,
and 126-pound sophomore
Aidan McKeag,
who pinned Fremd freshman
Jack Riemer at 1:50
in their third-place match.
Gonzalez will take a 27-9
record to the sectional,
while McKeag has a 26-16
record.
In the team competition,
Wheeling was first with 259
points, followed by New
Trier with 177. The Warriors
had five champions
and the Trevians had four.
GBS was fifth with 86
points; GBN was sixth
with 83.50; and Loyola
was seventh with 50.

South sets school record, wins regional
Titans take top four
all-around spots
Todd Marver
Freelance Reporter
The injury bug has bitten
the Titans this season,
but they were as healthy
as they’ve been all year at
the regional on Jan. 30 in
Glenview.
Glenbrook South won
with a score of 146.4, a
school record, and the
first-place Titans advanced
to the sectional as a team.
“Our team has been
working so hard,” GBS
junior Bebe Haramaras
said. “We’ve had a lot of
injuries this year, so coming
back now and being
there as a whole team today,
I think this is the first
time we’ve all been really
healthy. ... It felt so great to
be out there with the whole
team. We all just motivate
each other and it was awesome.”
The top five competitors
in each individual
event and all-around automatically
advanced to the
sectional on Monday, Feb.
6, at Stevenson. South
junior Hannah Hartley
placed first in all-around
with a score of 38.25, including
first place in each
of the individual events
with 9.725 on vault, 9.5
on bars, 9.475 on beam
and 9.55 on floor.
“I was really happy
with how I did,” Hartley
said. “I know there’s a
few things that I can go
into practice working on
this next week and hopefully
go out there and hit
it hard at sectionals and
stick everything. [With]
beam, I definitely want to
work on one of my skills
more, my side aerial, and
The Titans pose with their first-place plaque.
then just tighter landings
on my floor routines.”
Haramaras placed second
in all-around with a
score of 36.825, including
9.2 on vault (third
place), 9.025 on bars (second
place), 9.3 on beam
(second place) and 9.3 on
floor (third place).
“I think this is the best
meet of my season so
far,” Haramaras said. “I
was a little shaky on a
few events and I know I
can improve a lot, so I’m
hoping to clean up some
events and add in some
bonuses and upgrades if I
can. So I’m really happy,
but I’m looking forward to
sectionals and hopefully
I’ll kill it there. I’m looking
to upgrade my vault
for sure and just cleaning
up all my routines and
making sure I’m solid and
confident. Like I said, today
I had some shake-ups.
That’s OK. That’s what I
wanted. I needed to know
what I needed to work on,
so now I’m just looking
to hit my routines and be
confident and upgrade my
vault if I can and upgrade
anything that I can.”
Freshman Jenna Hartley
placed third in all-around
with a score of 36.175,
including 9.425 on vault
(second place), 8.725 on
bars (fifth place), 8.65
on beam (fifth place) and
9.375 on floor (second
place).
“I feel like I did pretty
well,” Hartley said. “I
could work on some stuff
but overall I felt like I did
really good considering
the circumstances that I
was under with my first
regionals in high school.
I think that I need to just
work on perfecting my
routines and being more
confident.”
Junior Kylie Kruger
placed fourth in all-around
with a score of 34.475, including
8 on vault (17th
place), 8.35 on bars (seventh
place), 8.875 on beam
(fourth place) and 9.25 on
floor (fourth place).
“Individually, I’m
pleased with most of my
first-place performance at the regional on Jan. 30 in Glenview. Photos by Carlos
GBS freshman Jenna Hartley balances on the beam.
events,” Kruger said. “I
know next time I can do
even better, which I’m
excited for, but today
was really good. For
sectionals I’m hoping to
get my flipping vaults.
If I work really hard I
will achieve it. And just
getting my double even
more consistent.”
South sophomore Sarah
Healy automatically qualified
for the sectional in
floor exercise with a fifthplace
score of 8.9. She also
took sixth on vault (8.775)
and 10th on bars (8.075).
“I did put out my best
effort, but I know that I
can still do better because
I had some mistakes on
some of the events,” Healy
said. “I’m working to get
a harder dismount off of
bars and to clean up my
floor routine a little bit.”

Loyola’s 10-game win streak halted by Fenwick
STARS OF THE WEEK
1. Daniel Pravich
(above). The
Glenbrook South
wrestler qualified for
the sectional after
topping a New Trier
junior in 47 seconds
and winning his
consolation quarterfinal
match at the
Wheeling Regional
on Saturday, Feb. 4,
in Evanston.
2. Hannah Hartley. The
GBS junior advanced
to the sectional after
earning first in the
all-around, including
first in vault, bars,
beam and floor,
at the Glenbrook
South Regional on
Jan. 30 in Glenview.
3. Ramar Evans. The
Loyola Academy
senior guard scored
13 points during the
Ramblers’ 46-37
loss, their first since
before the holidays,
to Fenwick on Jan.
31 in Wilmette.
Loyola entered its contest
with Fenwick on a
10-game winning streak
and without a defeat since
before the holidays. A win
over Fenwick would have
given the Ramblers an
undefeated January and a
chance for a share of the
CCL North title.
But those things did not
come to fruition, as the
Friars topped Loyola 46-
37 on Jan. 31 in Wilmette.
“To compete for the
CCL championship is always
a big deal,” Ramblers
senior guard Ramar
Evans said. “I wish we
could’ve come out on
top and that would have
been more special. But
you can’t sit on this game
and you’ve got to move
forward. This was a good
game for us to learn and
grow from. Now we know
we can hang with teams
like Fenwick, which is a
good team. It’s definitely
a confidence booster.”
Loyola (15-6, 6-2 Chicago
Catholic League
North) faced a 13-point
halftime deficit, but
opened the third quarter
on a 14-5 run to trim Fenwick’s
lead to 35-31. Evans
had six points, senior
guard Jack Martinus and
junior guard Kevin Cunningham
each hit 3-pointers,
and senior forward
Julian DeGuzman made a
Ramblers guard Matt Lynch drives past a Friars
defender.
shot in the post during the
run.
“We just played Loyola
basketball,” Evans said.
“We defended and we
started making shots.
That was really it. We just
played how we were supposed
to play.”
“We made a couple of
open shots and when you
make some shots, you can
cut into a lead,” Ramblers
coach Tom Livatino added.
“Defensively we were
solid.”
Fenwick ended the third
quarter on a 6-0 run to enter
the final period with a
41-31 lead. Jamal Nixon
hit a free throw and a pair
of Loyola turnovers led to
a DJ Steward bucket and
an AJ Nixon 3-pointer to
close the quarter.
“We were completely
unable to finish out the
quarter,” Livatino said.
Tracy Allen/22nd Century Media
“We finished out the quarter
with two turnovers and
that led to a basket and
then they scored another
basket. You can’t do that
against a really, really
good team.”
The Ramblers outscored
the Friars 6-5 in
the fourth quarter, but it
wasn’t enough. Loyola
fell behind 18-9 in the
first quarter before going
on a 6-0 run to close
its deficit to 18-15. But
Fenwick ended the first
half on a 12-2 run to take
a 30-17 halftime lead
thanks to five points from
Nixon, a Steward 3-pointer,
and Jacob Keller and
