On March 24, Gail Simmons will be hosting a highly anticipated annual
event, the James Beard Gourmet Four-Course Luncheon at Palm Desert
Food & Wine 2017, organized by Palm Springs Life magazine.
Co-producer Tony Marchese of TRIO Restaurant gave me a
chance to interview Gail before the big event. It is always a pleasure to
meet television personalities who are celebrities based on more than
just their beauty alone. Gail Simmons is just this type. She is as vivacious
and beautiful as a tv host could be. Yet on top of being a dynamic
television personality, Gail Simmons is a trained culinary expert and food
writer. She has been a permanent judge on BRAVO’s Emmy-winning
Top Chef since the show’s inception in 2006. Now in its 14th successful
season, Top Chef is rated the #1 food show on cable television. Previously,
Gail was head critic on Top Chef Masters and host of To p
Chef Just Desserts, Bravo’s pastry-focused spinoff of the Top Chef
franchise. She was also co-host of The Feed, which aired in 2014 on
FYI, A+E’s new lifestyle network.

2017
Juli Ragsdale: Hello Gail, it is so great to connect. I always enjoy the
chance to see you on tv and I am honored to have a chance to chat with
you personally.
You are constantly on the road and in the media as a leading demonstrator
and a culinary event producer. How do you stay inspired? What
personal influences play into your choices of recipes for demonstrations?
Gail Simmons: Being on the road is what inspires me. I am constantly
traveling, tasting new foods or flavor combination, learning about cultural
and culinary traditions, meeting new people and exploring new places.
There is nothing I love more than bringing all of those lessons home to
my own kitchen to add my own twist, then test and taste. In terms of
what I choose to demonstrate or cook when I am at events, a lot of my
choices are based on where I have most recently been, what’s in season
locally where I am and what I am craving at that moment.
JR: You have been documented to be in Palm Springs many times. Any
stand out visits?
GS: I try to get to PS at least once a year. Two of our closest friends
have homes here and every time I come it is a reunion for us all as we
live on the East Coast and don’t get to see them as much as we wish
we could. We love checking out new restaurants, galleries and cocktail
bars but most of all, we love cooking at their homes, relaxing and catching
up together. That said, my most memorable visit to PS ever had to
be when Top Chef shot here in 2015. We created an episode around a
massive same-sex wedding ceremony for over two dozen couples. It was
extremely emotional for everyone and a moment I will never forget on the
show. It really highlighted how far we have come since our first season in
San Francisco, when we also did a same-sex wedding challenge. Back
in 2005 when we shot it, gay marriage was not yet legal in America. Who
knew we would be still making this show a decade later and able to celebrate
marriage equality in this way? It was beautiful!
JR: Have you any favorite restaurants, hang-outs, or activities in Palm Springs?
GS: Absolutely. I love Workshop for dinner and Hadley’s Date Farm for
shakes. I also love Ernest Coffee and Bootlegger Tiki! Of course a visit
to the Parker is always fun too.
www.palmdesertfoodandwine.com
Gail joined Food & Wine magazine in 2004, where she directs special
projects, working closely with the country’s top culinary talent and acting
as liaison between the marketing and editorial teams on events and chefrelated
initiatives. During her tenure, she has been responsible for overseeing
the annual Classic in Aspen, America’s premier culinary event.
Prior to working at Food & Wine, Gail was the special events manager
for Chef Daniel Boulud’s restaurant empire.
Born and raised in Toronto, Gail moved to New York City in 1999 to attend
culinary school at what is now the Institute of Culinary Education. She
then trained in the kitchens of legendary Le Cirque 2000 and groundbreaking
Vong restaurants, and worked as the assistant to Vogue magazine’s
esteemed food critic, Jeffrey Steingarten. Throughout her career, Gail has
contributed to several cookbooks, including It Must’ve Been Something I
Ate by Steingarten, Chef Daniel Boulud: Cooking in New York City and
The New American Chef, by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page. Gail’s
first book, a memoir titled Talking With My Mouth Full, was published by
Hyperion in February 2012. She is currently at work on on her first cookbook,
to be released in late 2017 by Grand Central Publishing.
In 2014, Gail and her business partner Samantha Hanks, founded
Bumble Pie Productions, an original content company dedicated to
discovering and promoting new female voices in the food and lifestyle
space. Their first series, “Star Plates”—a collaboration with Drew Barrymore’s
Flower Films and Authentic Entertainment—premiered September
2016 on the Food Network.
In addition to her work on Top Chef, Gail makes frequent television appearances
on NBC’s TODAY, ABC’s Good Morning America, and Fox
& Friends, among others. She is regularly featured in such publications
as New York magazine, Travel + Leisure, GQ, People, Entertainment
Weekly, Los Angeles Times, and was named the #1 Reality TV Judge
in America by the New York Post. Along with her annual appearance
at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, she makes regular appearances
at the nation’s foremost culinary festivals, including the Austin Food &
Wine Festival and South Beach Wine & Food Festival.
Gail currently lives in New York City with her husband, Jeremy and
daughter, Dahlia Rae.
JR: I heard you have a young daughter. She is three? Do you find yourself
learning many things from her?
GS: Yes she just turned three! At the risk of sounding cliché, parenting
is the hardest, most surprising and most rewarding job I have ever had. I
learn from her every day: lessons in patience, in knowing the importance
of slowing down and finding joy in little moments together, and especially
how to problem solve in unexpected ways. Every child and every family
operates differently, has different likes and dislikes, and reacts uniquely
to any given situation. She has taught me to be so much more flexible in
my life and daily decisions, and to not sweat the little details but instead
enjoy the NOW. We laugh so much together which is the best feeling in
the world. I am so thankful for that!
JR: Any clues or teasers about what you may present at Palm Desert
Food & Wine 2017?
GS: I am doing a cooking demo on Saturday with Brooke Williamson, a
chef I have admired since she first set foot on the set of Top Chef in season
10. She returned for our most recent season in Charleston (season
14). We both fell in love with the city and its food, so it seems only fitting
that we cook a few simple but delicious dishes inspired by our experiences
there.
JR: Do you have any outstanding favorite wines at the moment?
GS: I rarely drink the same bottle of wine twice when I am out as these
days there are so many new winemakers and varietals I want to try. I love
the natural wine trend we are seeing now in wine bars around the country,
as well as all the orange wine available. These new, emerging wines
can be challenging in the best way, delicious and unusual.
JR: Any favorite charities?
GS: As mentioned above, I sit on the board of several incredible organizations
for causes I am passionate about, including Hot Bread Kitchen,
City Harvest and Common Threads. For 2017, I am also really excited
about working on projects with Chop Chop magazine (chopchopmag.
org) as well as Cycle Kids (Cyclekids.org) and the Environmental
Working Group (EWG.org).
JR: Palm Springs is a very giving town to the hungry so you fit right in
here! We look forward to seeing you at the festival. Thanks Gail!

Fine art documentary photographer
Nancy Baron will share her
spare, jewel-toned photographic
impressions of her part-time
residence from her second
monograph, Palm Springs > The
Good Life Goes On (Kehrer Verlag),
on Tuesday, February 21 at 10 a.m.
She documents, with a positive
bias, her ongoing and endless discoveries of her second home and its
community of midcentury modern enthusiasts. This large tight-knit group
of self-proclaimed modernists is committed to the midcentury modern
life style and the preservation of its architecture. Their homes, cars, and
clothes pay homage to the carefree, post-World War II time in US history
that glows warmly in their vintage rear view mirrors. Baron’s informal
images casually document the carefree Palm Springs lifestyle as though
captured in passing, in the seemingly effortless way that most things
happen in Palm Springs.
Baron’s images of Palm Springs have been featured in The New York
Times, Mother Jones, Architectural Digest Italy, Palm Springs Life,
Palm Springs Style, Conde Nast Traveler, Fast Company and CNN,
amongst others. A Q&A and book signing will follow the presentation.
The presentation will be held in the Lorraine Boccardo Archive Study

On Wednesday, February 22 at 10 a.m. Photographer Dan Chavkin
presents Midcentury Parking Lots. Midcentury Parking Lots is a
photographic book based on a selection of parking lots throughout Palm
Springs whose common attribution is that each one belongs to an iconic
midcentury modern building. Initially inspired by artist Edward Ruscha’s
seminal 1967 book ‘Thirty-Four Parking Lots’ both in concept and
typographic presentation, Chavkin thoughtfully captures the architectural
qualities inherent in a commercial parking lots design. Without direct

10 Things Straight Women
Can Learn from Gay Men

things
Several years ago I picked up a book called Sex Tips For
Straight Women from a Gay Man, which deals mainly with
lovemaking and seduction. Calling Palm Springs my home for
over a decade, and hanging out with a lot of fabulous people,
I can assure you that there is way more to learn from gay men
than epic bjs. That classic quote in M. Butterfly: “only a man
knows how a woman is supposed to act” becomes evident right
here, in town. So without further ado here’s my own list.

1. Staying in your best bikini body year-round. You just never know
when the next pool party is going to break out and where.
2. If there is one item you should wear is lipstick (or gloss/balm ). In
other words, always keep that pout inviting. Chapped, leathery lips -
ewww.
3. Learn how to wear crazy make up. It should be worn with an attitude,
darling. If you’re feeling insecure… well, then you’ll just look weird, not
fabulous.
4. A red dress is a must! It’s hard to rock a red dress like gay boys do,
but we must try. My favorite annual event in Palm Springs is the Red
Dress/Dress Red party, which combines a wonderful cause with an
absolutely rollicking fun evening. Even those cuddly bears show up
in dazzling gowns and heels. So say goodbye to you LBD (little black
dress), and say hello to the lady in red.
5. Though it doesn’t rain much in Palm Springs, the one thing you
know for sure when it does is that you can still look good. I haven’t
seen anyone in huge ugly rain boots. There are alternatives.
Currie Mendez, Alfie Pettit
6. Everybody looks older with gray hair. I know, it’s hard to compete with a
gay man’s perfect highlights, but even DIY out-of-the-box color will make
a huge difference. By the way, smart women do color their hair. Think
Hillary.
7. Making things pretty. It’s OK to get takeout, and eat it out of the box
every once in a while, but setting the table with real china, napkins,
and candles makes a whole world of difference. That’s where your red
dress will come in handy, btw.
8. Lovely, soft, groomed hands and nails. Must I say more?
9. The art of accepting gifts. Every gift I’ve given to my friends here
was welcomed with wonderful grace. No matter how big or small, it’s
always appreciated, and acknowledged with a phone call or a Thank
You card.
10. Walk that walk, sugar. Every woman should have an arsenal of
signature moves at her disposal, like “bend and snap” from Legally
Blonde. Here’s one I’ve learned from the boys. When out with your
significant other, get up to go to the powder room, but don’t leave right
away. Linger there for a moment, until he has eyes on you, and then
slowly walk away. Sway those hips. He definitely won’t be looking at
his cell phone until you’re well out of his sight.

About 7 years ago Juli and I met Julie Montante through her aunt,
Phyllis Silver and our longtime friend, award-winning author,George
Newberry. Phyllis is quite the business lady owning strips of buildings
with leased businesses along Santa Monica Boulevard in Los
Angeles.
It is not surprising that entrepreneur Juliette Montante and her
brother Lenny inherited this genius of business and business development.
One year ago at the opening of PSA Organica, City Councilwoman,
Ginny Foat, Jeff Hocker, tv crews, LIVE Magazine, Chamber of Commerce
and well over 100 supporters attended the Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony.
on their web site, “Do not put yourself or others at risk! Only become
members and conduct transactions with permitted medical cannabis collectives.”
Community Compassion
It is a very exciting time in the world of medicine. New and ground-breaking
research is bringing to light the multiple medicinal properties of cannabis
in the treatment and cure of diseases. With each passing month there
are discoveries of new cures, treatments and medicines.
In keeping up with the latest modalities, the integrity and expertise of
the cannabis dispensaries increasingly comes into play to counsel and
dispense the newly identified and sometimes intricate treatments. Further,
an ideal collective would provide wellness services and educational
programs. An ideal dispensary would give back to the community with
compassion and charity.
Enter the new, Palm Springs ‘Dispensary That Cares’, Palm Springs
Associated Organica. It is located just south of downtown in the ‘Sunny
Dunes Antique District’, on E. Sunny Dunes Road and Industrial Place,
just off Palm Canyon Dr. Open for clients 7 days a week from 9am - 7pm.
At PSA Organica they intend to raise the bar and become the model for
what a collective in Palm Springs should be. From the quality of their
meds to the dedicated service, PSA Organica truly strives to be the best
at what they do. To them, every detail definitely matters.
This is reflected from the moment you walk in their door; in the thoughtfully
selected decor, comfortably furnished waiting room, and complimentary
snacks they offer. At PSA Organica they put the patient’s comfort first,
making a point to always treat the patients with warm welcoming respect.
“Volunteers at PSA Organica are here to assist in the patients’ medicinal
needs so the quality of their lives can be increased. Our goal is to supply
compassion to those in need- All the while embracing their wish to treat
themselves with a natural alternative. Here at PSA Organica, we provide
a safe, comfortable environment, off of the streets where our patients can
obtain their medicine from a trusted source. There is no greater reward
than that which you obtain from assisting those in need. Our only wish is
to be able to provide that much needed help to our patients and our community,”
said Juliette.-
PSA Organics is the newest of the only five City of Palm Springs permitted
medical cannabis collectives and cooperatives. The City contracts
with an independent medical cannabis testing laboratory to perform random
sampling and testing of various products at each collective. This is
important to maintain a standard of quality and integrity. The city advises
One of the major determining factors for the City was PSA Organica’s
commitment to the community. “This is the kind of thing that I always
envisioned the collective to be.” said Palm Springs City Councilwoman
Ginny Foat, in her support for PSA Organica. “Not just a business selling
medicine.”
PSA Organica donates 5 percent of after-tax receipts each month to local
charities. “My promise is to open and run a facility that will benefit the
merchants and residents of Palm Springs.”, said Julie. “Medical marijuana
will be made available for free to terminally ill patients. I want to open
and run a facility that will benefit the merchants and residents of Palm
Springs.”
Julie Montante and her brother, General Manager, Leonard (Lenny),
make the effort to attend all Medical Cannabis industrial shows and
events to bring home the best products for their patients. When asked
how she got into this industry, Julie replied, “Our mother developed Stage
4 breast cancer at the age of 45. This spurred our personal interests in
finding alternatives to chemo, radiation and surgery without stripping her
of her dignity.” This was the beginning of an extensive and compassionate
journey which has led Julie and Lenny to their pursuit of helping those
in need.
“We have discovered products such as Rick Simpson Oil, and Morongo
Seed. There are many alternatives items on the market being researched.
We turn no venders away who might have that one item which provides
comfort and possible remission for even one patient.
As part of effort to give back to the community, the collective offers incentives
for the patients to give back as well. Bring in 3 canned goods or
non-perishible food items and receive $5 off your purchase. Food items
go to organizations as Well in the Desert, Desert AIDS Project, Martha’s
Kitchen, and AIDS Assistance Program. They have an animal program
as well. If patients bring a 5 pound bag of food for cats or dogs, they get
$5 off their purchase.

dexterity, and in general they tend to eat more sweets more often, and not brush
as often.
There is also another component that needs to be explained here. In the mouth
there are several types of bacteria. Some are responsible for gum disease and
some are responsible for decay. Some people may have the best hygiene
and still have gum disease and some who have the worst hygiene may not
suffer from gum disease at all. This is because they do not have the bacteria
responsible for gum disease. Same thing for decay. Some people will be more
susceptible to decay then others even if they eat just a little sugar and have
decent dental hygiene. That is because they have that kind of bacteria in their
mouth in a higher rate then another person. But that is not a reasonable excuse.
More brushing and plaque control with a topical fluoride application daily,
preferably with a special personal tray made at the dental office will help.
Very rarely a person will suffer from gum disease and a high rate of decay. It is
generally one or the other. If someone has a high rate of decay, in general they will
not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, periodontal pockets and tooth mobility.
It is a proven fact though, that the better the dental hygiene you have and the
better your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, the healthier your gums and
teeth will be.
So, it is not true that decay affect only kids. As long as you have one tooth in
your mouth you are subject to get decay if you leave dental plaque on it and eat
sugar!--
Do you think that dental cavities are problems only for
children?
The best way to prevent that is to have good dental hygiene at home and
brushing after any sugar intake, and to visit your dentist 2 to 3 times a year.
Dr. Bruno Lemay
It is a general belief that cavities are for kids only. But in fact,
cavities affect all ages!
The reason why cavities are more prevalent in children is
mainly the fact that they tend to eat more sugar and have
poor hygiene habits. However, when looking at the cause of
decay, which is basically plaque with the presence of sugar,
it is easy to understand that cavities can happen at any age
even if your mouth is full of crowns.
Of course there are some people who have teeth that are
softer then others and are easier to decay but that affects
only 1% of the population. Basically any diet rich in sugar
will increase your chance of decay. Soft drinks, candies and
anything sweet will have a potency to create decay in the
presence of dental plaque. Of course in order to create
decay there has to be the bacteria that will transfer the sugar
into acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental plaque and
it forms very quick after eating. The better hygiene a person
has, the less they will have decay. It takes both sugar and
plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush and floss, the
more plaque removed and the less risk of decay.
Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have more decay.
It is more obvious with elderly patients who are loosing their

DAVID
GEIST
www.ma4sd.com
A San Diego Native, David moved to New
York in the 1990’s and took Broadway by
storm. David is one of Broadway’s most celebrated
musicians. Even though David has
traveled the world performing in show stoppers,
San Diego remains his home.
• “David Geist is a splendid musician, arranger
& coach! I’ve so enjoyed working with him. He
wrote one of my favorite charts ever for my concert
at Carnegie Hall for Broadway Cares Equity
Fights Aids!” –Betty Buckley
Send in the Sounds is a combination of piano playing, vocals and storytelling
from a 21st Century master. His song list includes spellbinding
versions of songs from Guys & Dolls, An American In Paris, and West
Side Story among many others. Send in the Sounds also captures songs
at the crossroads – where David plays “one of a kind” versions of some
of the most timely and wonderful music ever written alongside new and
exciting original material.
David has spent several years perfecting his craft in Santa Fe, New Mexico
where he performs regularly at his own cabaret room Pranzo Geist
Cabaret. David showcases showstoppers that he launched from many
of the original Broadway productions he played for. He plays a whimsical
and then intensely maddening version of “Memory” from Cats, delivers a
fun, witty and charming version of “Tomorrow” from Annie and so much
more!
Throughout the show, David shares a few of his own musical masterpieces
including The Caged Bird Flies, where he pays a musical homage to
Dr. Maya Angelou. David is also an illuminating storyteller!
For over 20 years, David worked as one of Broadway’s most celebrated
musicians. He performed in over 30 Broadway shows including Sunset
Blvd, Smokey Joe’s Café, Les Miserables and The Boy From Oz to name
only a few. You’ll be amused. You’ll laugh. You’ll tap your toes. You’ll be
transported to another time, another place. But above all else, you’ll leave
the show feeling loved and light-hearted.
• “David Geist has an entire orchestra at his
fingertips when he’s at the piano!!” –Lee Roy
Reams
• “From the very first rehearsal I knew I was in
good hands with David Geist. Besides his positive
energy, which is essential, he’s an excellent
musician, who knows how to put a show together.”
-Donna McKechnie
• “David Geist is a genius. The world needs to
know that David’s also a wonderful composer.
This show should be seen by all.” -Kaye Ballard
Confirming rumors swirling for months, the best-selling boy band
of all time, with over 130 million albums sold worldwide, is heading
to the Las Vegas Strip. The pop juggernaut Backstreet Boys
announced they will begin an exclusive Las Vegas headlining residency
show, “Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life,” inside The AXIS at
Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino beginning Wednesday, March 1,
2017. Audiences will be captivated as Nick Carter, Howie Dorough,
Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson take the stage with
a one-of-a-kind, over-the-top production made exclusively for the
Vegas stage.
For 22 years, the Backstreet Boys, one of the most successful
groups in music history, has continually delivered the finest pop
music one has to offer, making them one of pop’s most influential
performers. With countless #1s, record-setting tours, countless
awards and worldwide sales in excess of 130 million, BSB has been
recognized as the best-selling boy band in history. In 2013, BSB
celebrated their 20th Anniversary with the release of the album
In A World Like This, which saw the group receive a star on the
legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame. BSB are currently in the studio
working on their next album.

“Comedians don’t get much bigger than global phenomenon
Jerry Seinfeld.”
...Las Vegas Theater
Entertainment icon Jerry
Seinfeld’s comedy career
took off after his first appearance
on The Tonight Show
with Johnny Carson in 1981.
Eight years later, he teamed up with fellow
comedian Larry David to create what was to
become the most successful comedy series in
the history of television: Seinfeld. The show
ran on NBC for nine seasons, winning numerous
Emmy, Golden Globe and People’s Choice
awards, and was named the greatest television
show of all time in 2009 by TV Guide, and in
2012 was identified as the best sitcom ever in
a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll.
Seinfeld has also starred in, written and produced
movies (Comedian, Bee Movie), directed
and produced a Broadway hit (Colin Quinn
Long Story Short), and even wrote a best-selling
book (Seinlanguage) and a children’s book
(Halloween).
Seinfeld directed the off-Broadway production
of Colin Quinn: The New York Story and the
upcoming Netflix stand-up special.
Seinfeld’s latest project is the Emmy nominated
and critically-acclaimed web series Comedians
in Cars Getting Coffee, seen exclusively
on Crackle and comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com,
which has garnered over 100 million
views, and which the New York Times
describes as “impressively complex and artful”
and Variety calls “a game changer.”
The Forum Deluxe Room features a modern interior with a warm neutral palette and a pop of golden
yellow. The custom-upholstered headboard incorporates mirrored panels. The custom artwork is a nod
to Caesars’ rich history of Roman-inspired style.
Most recently, Seinfeld has been performing
at the Beacon Theatre as part of a year-long
residency entitled, “Jerry Seinfeld: The Homestand.”
Seinfeld resides in New York City with his wife
and three children. He remains active as a
standup comedy performer, continuously touring
both nationally and internationally.

PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE
Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of
the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center
Ticket prices start at $29.
Paris, 1904: The Lapin Agile, beloved watering hole to struggling
artists and would-be geniuses, welcomes two soon-to-be legends for
one extraordinary night. Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, whose
egos are as big as their intellects, spar with the regulars and each
other about art, science, inspiration, love, and the promise of the 20th
century. Throw into this mix a mysterious visitor with a penchant for
blue suede shoes, and you’re in for a brilliant and witty evening in the
theatre.
Diversionary celebrates the storytelling genius of Lisa Kron by bringing
two of her contemporary classics together in repertory for the first
time ever! Both autobiographical plays deftly explore Kron’s hilarious
and poignant relationship with two of the most perplexing people in
her life: Her Parents.
