ENGINEERING FOUNDATION<br />

APPRENTICESHIP - SCQF LEVEL 6<br />

The <strong>Foundation</strong> Apprenticeship (FA) in <strong>Engineering</strong> aims to give pupils<br />

the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to<br />

enter into a career in <strong>Engineering</strong> and the Advanced Manufacturing<br />

sector. The programme is designed to provide students with theory,<br />

practice and related work experience.<br />

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS<br />

Pupils must be working at National 5 Level (SCQF Level 5) as a<br />

minimum and should have the potential to develop to Higher Level<br />

(SCQF level 6). Maths at SCQF Level 5 and working towards success in<br />

Higher Maths is expected, as is taking another STEM based subject.<br />

A good level of written and spoken English is essential, as is and real<br />

aptitude for problem solving. Prospective candidates will go through<br />

an interview process, provide a good school reference and may also be<br />

required to take an aptitude test.<br />

DAYS, TIME & DELIVERY<br />

The course duration is over 2 years and would involve:<br />

• 4 afternoons a week for 2 years.<br />

• 1.30 - 4:30pm for 36 weeks<br />

• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday


COURSE CONTENT<br />

The <strong>Foundation</strong> Apprenticeship in <strong>Engineering</strong> has 3 major<br />

components:<br />

• A full National Certificate (NC) in an <strong>Engineering</strong> discipline (SCQF L6)<br />

• 5 units of a SVQ Level 2 in Performing <strong>Engineering</strong> Operations<br />

(SCQF L5)<br />

• Work-related experience and an Industry Challenge project.<br />

Year 1<br />

• Complete a range of NC Units<br />

• Complete a range of PEO Level 2 units<br />

• Undertake work placement activities<br />

Year 2<br />

Completion of any outstanding Performing <strong>Engineering</strong> Operations (PEO)<br />

units including 3 mandatory, and the remainder of any core / restricted<br />

core and optional units from the NC in <strong>Engineering</strong> Systems. The majority<br />

of work-related experience is expected to be gained in year 2.<br />

PROGRESSION<br />

On satisfactory completion of the programme candidates will have the<br />

opportunity of progressing to our HNC programme in <strong>Engineering</strong>, or<br />

may be able to secure a fast-track<br />
