It's All About the Details
Well, actually, we think it's all about the celebration of marrying your best
friend, but when we're talking about wedding decor, it really is all about the
details!
Decor, think of it as setting the stage for your wedding. There are many
elements of decor that will ultimately set the mood, create the atmosphere
that most closely matches your overall theme, and contribute heavily to the
experience of both you as a couple and your guests.
E L E M E N T S O F D E C O R
So the bad news is, you've got a lot of details to determine! The good news is,
with so many different elements at play, you have a lot of wiggle room in
what you may want to take on yourself and what you can leave to the
professionals. So many elements also equates to lots of ways to save money
on some aspects while still being able to splurge on others!
Always the Details
Once you have your budget determined, you really need to do a bit of soul
searching to decide on what elements of your wedding truly mean the most to
you. Identifying your priorities will help you to determine how much of your
budget you will designate to decor.
If, for example, your wedding photography is a high priority, you will definitely
need to invest a good solid amount towards your photography; don’t skimp on
this! Hire the best photographer you can afford. That being said, there are many
elements of your décor that will be captured in those photos, so you’ll want to
keep that in mind too!
Okay, so what exactly are all these decor elements anyhow? Here's what we're
going to take a closer look at today:
THEME
What's in a Theme?
Your theme will be a consistent thread throughout your design. It
may be a very well-defined theme like vintage, or rustic chic, or
maybe based upon your favorite movie, destination, or your own
history as a couple. It can also be much more subtle or just an
overall "feeling" that you create with details.
T H E M E
Sometimes, your theme will be driven by your venue. For
example, if you are getting married in a barn, or a church, or an
open field, or a hotel ballroom; all of those very specific locations
have a distinctive "feel" and will consequently drive or cater to
certain themes. On the flip side, your theme may be the driving
factor on finding your venue. Additionally, the date and time of
year can also play a factor, if for example, you are wanting an
outdoor wedding. So it's really all about priorities again and
narrowing down what is most important to you as a couple.
Once you have your theme or "feel" determined, the remaining
decor elements will simply build upon it to help you transform
your wedding vision into a realty and have your guests raving
about "the best wedding ever."
Charm, in most men and nearly all
women, is a decoration.
COLOR ME WED
Color, it's one of the first decor elements that you will decide on and just like the
theme, it will act as a common thread throughout your wedding. Color is instantly
recognizable and one of the first things that your guests will associate to your event.
The options for color are pretty infinite and for that reason may be a bit
overwhelming when trying to narrow it down. Unless of course you have a
signature color or favorite combination of colors that you just knew immediately you
would be using. Even if you have a firm grip on your favorite colors, there are still
additional considerations such as the time of year and flower availability.
C O L O R S C H E M E
And you'll want to be aware of a color's impact on the mood and atmosphere as
well as your venue space. Consider the following color associations:
Red; excitement, passion, drama, fire
Orange; warmth, richness, optimism, fun (Broncos!)
Yellow; happy, joyful, hope, energy, positivity
Blue; wisdom, trust, loyalty, coolness (as in temperature)
Green; growth, renewal, nature, youthful, fulfillment, happiness
Violet/Purple; wealth, royalty, luxury, sophistication
White; crisp, clean, cool, goodness, faith, purity
Black; mystery, formality, sophistication, drama
You'll first want to decide on a primary color for your scheme and then
choose a good base (neutral) color and at least 1 accent color for balance.
And of course complementary colors are a must!
Keep in mind that you can use certain colors to make spaces feel smaller,
larger, cooler, or warmer! Color is an amazing tool at your disposal for
creating just the right impact on your entire day!
Center of it All
Flowers will always spark more oohs and aahs than anything in your
wedding decor. And with so many wonderful options and ways in
which to incorporate them, well, they're kind of a big deal!
And there are great ways in which you can incorporate flowers
while still saving precious money too! That being said, we would
highly recommend hiring a quality florist to provide at the very least,
the bridal bouquet and the reception centerpieces. You can also then
work with your florist to get some loose flowers for accent decor. We
talked in our last issue too about using your more expensive flowers
in the bouquets and centerpieces while using the less expensive
flowers in your accent floral decor. Also consider the season you are
getting married in to determine flower availability; readily available
and "in-season" equals less expensive!
F L O W E R S
Explore the world of alternatives too. Consider hand-crafted paper
flowers/arrangements; they can be absolutely gorgeous and you'll
have the bonus of being able to use them beyond your wedding
day. Additional decor can be used with flowers to enhance the mood
and atmosphere: candles (be sure to check with the venue on what
is allowed), lanterns, and bird cages can all be used with or without
flowers!
LET THERE BE LIGHT
"In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary."Aaron Rose -
photographer And in the right hands, lighting can dramatically affect your
entire wedding in an incredible way that will complement your entire design.
This is one area that unless you need just a simple stringing of market lights
over an outdoor reception area (which isn't as easy as you might think), you
really need to hire a professional! Lighting designers know their stuff; they
know the effects to be gained by certain types of lighting and how best to
apply them. Be sure to budget an appropriate amount for this one and if
you hire another vendor such as a DJ that has their own lighting, just be
sure to talk to them about exactly what their lighting can achieve and the
role it will fulfill within your overall design.
IT'S THE LITTLE DETAILS
While floral centerpieces will take the starring role on your reception tables,
softening and accentuating them with additional decor is a must. Soft flickering
candlelight, bits and pieces of interesting theme related decor, even your table
numbers will all serve to give your guests something fun and interesting to look
at over dinner. Table decor is also a great do-it-yourself project that won't
require a lot of valuable time, money, or effort to create. You can also think
about including your guest favors in your place settings; they're another great
DIY project that can also contribute to your theme and guest experience!

moment will spread beyond all boundaries.
On Full Display
Don't just settle for a standard table draped in linens when it comes to
your cake/dessert, gift, memory, or escort card tables and displays.
Think outside of the box and use furniture pieces or rustic tables
instead! And then extend your accent floral arrangements and table
decor to these areas as well. The furniture pieces themselves can all
lend nicely to your theme and are so much more interesting to look at!
They'll make for great photos too so you can remember all of those
special details that made up your unique and fabulous day!
HAVE YOUR CAKE...
The food you serve, the cake you display, and the desserts your guests will
enjoy can all contribute to your overall theme and color scheme. Get creative
with your caterer or venue staff when you are planning for these elements.
What fun ways can you incorporate the food into your guest experience and
the feeling you are trying to convey to your guests throughout your entire
wedding? Even the appetizers you serve during cocktail hour can play a
supporting decor role in the event. There are so many options out there in
the way of food, cakes, and desserts and all of those options are just one
more way you can contribute to your theme!
And don't forget presentation; if you are having a buffet, don't forget to add
some decor details to service tables. Your cake and desserts can be displayed
in and on some spectacular dishes, cake stands, and furniture pieces. These
areas can all benefit from some small decor and floral accents too!
TABLES AND CHAIRS
Okay so sometimes, this is just an absolute no-brainer. Quite often, your
venue will offer both tables and chairs as part of the package deal but
sometimes they don't. Sometimes what they have to offer is just not right for
your theme, guest experience, or the overall vibe you are trying to create.
Trust us, there are some pretty ugly chairs out there and linens over standard
tables can only do so much. And again, the standard look may be in total
contrast to your vision.
T A B L E S / C H A I R S
Now we know we're pretty biased but don't ever underestimate the value of
a great big rustic farm table or the fabulous and laid-back look that
mismatched vintage tables and chairs can create. We've said it before and
we'll say it again, no one will ever remember your tables and chairs unless
they are absolutely amazing!

/ L A Y O U T S
Setting the Table
Your linens and tableware will play a key role in the overall look and feel of
your wedding. So be sure to explore your options with your caterer or if you’re
handling food on your own; maybe think about researching options through
local rental companies. Linens and tableware come in so many different colors,
textures, and patterns now so have fun with your selections and find just the
right pieces to play up and complement your theme and color scheme. Go bold
or go subtle; allow your centerpieces and other table decor to determine which
way to go with the linens and tableware.
Laying it All Out
While not exactly decor, your layout will work right alongside all of your decor to
create the perfect environment and atmosphere. The layout not only needs to look
great and enhance your theme but it also needs to be functional. A great layout
will also highlight your head table or sweetheart table, other display tables, and
keep your guests visually engaged throughout the entire event. And maybe
there's a great view at play that you'll want the layout to highlight. It's just
another one of those aspects you don't want to underestimate!
IN CLOSING
So to wrap it up, consider your budget, your priorities, your personality, and
your style when you begin planning for all of the décor details of your
wedding. Again, with so many aspects to consider, you really can take
advantage of certain aspects to save money. And there are plenty of options
available to conform to your budget.
Lastly, seek out help from family, friends, and professionals wherever and
whenever possible. When it comes to setting up all of your décor on the day of
your wedding, consider hiring a day-of coordinator or someone like Yours For
Your Day to handle those tasks for you so you and all of your guests can enjoy
the day!
