“Christ’s love ... has been the history and 

commitment of ACV, and will continue to be the 

center point of the ACV mission, even more so 

in today’s hectic and confused culture.” 

Achanging world? Yes! Is now and always has been! As one 

of our ACV Board members stated at a recent Board meeting, “It 

is our challenge to marry up the mission of care with the reality 

of operations and finance.” It is exciting to see the physical 

growth and development at the Village with the continuing phases of Taylor 

Commons, the completion of the Kennon Library, and the groundbreaking for 

the Polk Ceramics Shop. But, it is equally important to witness and assure the 

ongoing quality of care delivered to residents within the various stages of need. 

Your Advent Christian Village Board works with — and is supportive of 

— the dedicated management and staff at ACV to execute the ACV mission 

statement, “to express Christ’s love by providing compassionate care and 

quality comprehensive services for senior adults, families with special needs, 

and children in a secure, supportive residential setting and in the surrounding 

communities.” 

A recent cliché being expressed in academia and the media is that our culture has moved into the “posttruth” 

era. As a culture, we have too much data, information, and stories without any verification of the 

truth for all that is presented to us. Christ’s love is truth; has been, and always will be! That love has been 

the history and commitment of ACV, and will continue to be the center point of the ACV mission, even 

more so in today’s hectic and confused culture, wrestling with the idea of post-truth. As an ACV Board, we 

are committed to working with our management team to stay focused and responsive to our mission in a 

changing world.

President’s Report 


The Year in Review 

A Message from the President/CEO 

Recently, the daughter of two ACV members 

wrote this: 

“Mom and Dad have lived in Carter House 

for almost two years. They have the best of both 

worlds: independence, but within a caring community of 

fellow retirees and caring staff. The people who work for the 

Village and the church are the most amazing people who give 

of themselves tirelessly. I truly appreciate you taking such 

good care of my parents!” 

Peace of mind for family members is certainly a 

wonderful by-product of the compassionate care and quality 

services provided to Village members. Nearly 500 ACV 

employees work diligently in 

an effort to provide the best 

care, using their unique skills 

with a focus on ministry. Many 

individuals working together 

with one purpose: to serve the 

members and guests of Advent 

Christian Village in the name of 

Jesus Christ. What a privilege it 

is to work with this great team. 

ACV received another positive 

review within the past few 

months. This one was from CARF-CCAC, the accrediting 

body for retirement communities. Surveyors once again 

visited the campus to evaluate ACV’s compliance with 

1,200+ standards relating to administration, finances and 

care and services provided. It gives me great pleasure to 

report that Advent Christian Village was awarded another 

Five-Year Term of Accreditation. This latest accreditation is 

ACV’s fourth consecutive five-year CARF-CCAC accreditation. 

We recently learned that only 15% of providers receive 

accreditation, and of those that do, only 4% receive the full 

five-year term. My gratitude goes out to the staff that works 

so hard each day to ensure that ACV is a place of quality that 

is worthy of trust. 

In 2016, Advent Christian Village and RiverOak Technical 

College partnered to bring a Certified Nursing Assistant 

course to Good Samaritan Center. The class can be compared

to a paid internship: Individuals taking the five-week CNA 

class are students of RiverOak and also paid employees 

of ACV. Once the course requirements are complete — 

including passing a state test — each student continues their

employment at ACV as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Seven 

classes graduated in 2016 and the eighth class began at the 

end of January. 

Two of the 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign projects 

made major progress in 2016 and a third began. Phase 

II of Taylor Commons began this summer. Three six-apartment 

town homes similar to McGranahan Place are under 

construction in Taylor Commons, alongside Cleo’s Meeting 

House. The first building will be completed soon, the second 

is scheduled for completion in the summer, and the third 

should be started later in the spring. Construction on the 

Jo Kennon Dowling Park Public Library and Shirley Brooks 

Archive Wing wrapped up at the end of 2016. Currently, 

work is going into furnishing the building and pulling 

together the library collection and displays. The community 

eagerly looks forward to its official opening. Lastly, a 

groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Marion Polk 

Ceramics Shop in August. Since then, work began in earnest 

at the first of the year and is set for completion in the spring. 

It is exciting to watch your gifts transform these projects into 

reality before our very eyes. 

Good Samaritan Center has been undergoing a renovation 

process for some time and I’m pleased to report that in 2016, 

the initial project was completed: the renovation of every 

resident room. Each room received a fresh coat of paint, new 

flooring, and many ACV-furnishings, including beds, were 

replaced. Facility wide, the nursing stations in each neighborhood 

have been remodeled and the air conditioning system 

was improved. More improvements are currently underway. If 

you haven’t visited in a while, stop in to take a tour. 

In 2016, we bid farewell to several dear friends. Rev. 

John Harper moved to North Carolina to pastor the Lees 

Pickleball was introduced to the Dowling Park population 

in 2016. The sport combines elements of tennis, 

badminton and table tennis. 

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Marion 

Polk Ceramics Shop in August. Construction should be 

complete this spring. 

Phase II of Taylor Commons commenced in 2016. The first of the last three neighborhood buildings is nearly 

complete, the second is scheduled for completion in the summer, and the third should be started later in the 

spring. These three new buildings will each have six two-bedroom, two-bath units.

Church; Dede Stoddard retired as Director of Social Services 

for independent living; Shirley Lawson, faithful CNA for 31 

years, retired; and Dowling

the year. We are thankful 

for the many years of service 

each of these individuals 

contributed. 

ACV also welcomed 

some new key personnel 

last year. Natalie Gordon, 

ARNP-C, joined the team of 

medical providers at Copeland 

Clinic. She specializes 

in geriatrics and has been a 

perfect complement to our 

other medical professionals. 

Nancy Moral joined the 

Social Services department 

as a Service Coordinator, 

and Janice Estey came on 

board as the new Director 

of Social Services. Each 

contributes their unique 

skills and experience and we 

are pleased to have them in 

Dowling Park. 

As you might be aware, 

my favorite myth about 

senior living communities 

is that people just sit 

around, bored and isolated. 

Those of you who are well 

acquainted with Advent 

Christian Village know 

how far from the truth that 

statement is. In fact, many 

members comment that 

they’ve never been so busy 

— or so contented. Whether 

enjoying a lifelong hobby, 

learning something new, 

volunteering, or staying fit,

there’s always something available at ACV. Along with the 

many other activities at ACV, this year, a new sport was 

introduced to the Dowling Park population: pickleball. 

Pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton and 

table tennis, and those who participate are really enjoying it. 

Dick Grillo does a great job of lining up the Artist Series 

each year. Among the outstanding performances last season, 

we were treated to a night of big band music by the world 

famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. It was a night of delight, and 

conjured fond memories for many in the audience of other 

GMO concerts they attended in the past. 

Advent Christian Village has always been a strong 

supporter of education. In 2016 we celebrated twentyfive 

years of helping students further their educations. At 

the annual scholarship banquet, college scholarships are 

awarded to deserving Suwannee High School seniors, Village 

employees and the children of ACV employees through the 

Marvin E. Jones Educational Trust and the ACV Forward 

Fund. This is all made possible by generous individuals who 

have contributed the funds for these scholarships. 

Another student ministry that celebrated its 10-year 

anniversary in 2016 was the Camp Suwannee Leadership 

Development Training program. This professionally 

designed program employs techniques used by many Fortune 

500 companies, and focuses on creating a positive, energizing 

experience where high school juniors and seniors learn — 

and then hone — leadership skills that help ensure success in 

college, career and beyond. 

Each of the highlights described here, along with the 

many other programs, services and the compassionate care 

provided at ACV are woven together to form ACV’s mission 

of expressing Christ’s love to those we serve. It is only through 

God’s blessing that we are able to report on the 103rd year of 

ministry at Advent Christian Village. We pray for His continued 

blessing as we strive to be His hands and feet here in Dowling 

Park to senior adults, families with special needs, and children.

The ministry of Advent Christian Village is one of expressing Christ’s love to those we serve. That mission 

is only possible because of the generosity of individuals, churches and organizations. With the support of ACV’s 

faithful donors, lives are changed. 

Benevolent Ministry: How are gifts used? 

One of the things that sets ACV apart is that, 

thanks to benevolent gifts, the ministry and services of 

ACV are available to all, not just those with abundant 

resources. Support comes in many forms and serves a 

variety of purposes. 

• Senior adults: Housing, meals, essential 

services and more 

• Families: Assistance in times of crisis, help in 

getting back on their feet 

• Children: Special assistance and programming 

custom designed for their specific needs 

ACV relies upon the generosity of individuals, 

organizations and churches to accomplish its most 

worthwhile mission. Support comes in many forms and 

serves a variety of purposes. 

Direct Giving: All gifts received that 

are not specifically earmarked are used for the 

Benevolent Ministry. 

Endowment Funds: Funds are invested 

conservatively and a portion of the annual income 

is used to help defray the expenses of the benevolent 

ministry, special programs and services, and facility 

upkeep. Named endowments are established with a 

minimum of $10,000 paid over a period of up to 3 

years and the purpose can be chosen by the donor. 

Special Project Funds: Gifts that have been 

earmarked to assist with specific projects in various 

departments across ACV. 

Capital Funds: Such as gifts designated for the 

100th Anniversary Capital Campaign, are specifically 

for the construction and maintenance of ACV facilities. 

Capital funds keep costs down for members because 

facilities are built without debt. 

Ways to Give: 

1. Cash (checks, credit cards, online donations, IRA 

distributions, and gifts of stock). 

2. Non-cash Gifts: Any tangible asset that you wish to 

donate either for use or to sell. 

3. Planned or Deferred Gifts: 

• Outright gifts of valued assets such as real estate 

or personal property. 

• Gifts that return income or other financial 

benefits to the donor in return for the 

contribution (e.g., Charitable Gift Annuities and 

Charitable Remainder Trusts). 

• Gifts payable upon the donor’s death: Life 

insurance, bequests, and life estate agreements.

look at the different areas at ACV toward which generous people chose to give. Gifts listed under Operating 

Contributions actually provided practical help to individuals in need or supported special programs or services 

that are such a vital part of the ministry that happens at ACV (see Page 10 for details). Capital Contributions 

are gifts for facilities or infrastructure that provide the community where ministry happens. Endowment 

Contributions are gifts that increase ACV’s endowment fund, thereby increasing the annual earnings that are used 

for ACV’s Benevolent Fund, for special named programs like the Artist Series or facility upkeep.

What Your Benevolent Giving Accomplished Last Year 

Your generosity accomplishes amazing things! 

Advent Christian Village seeks to extend its ministry of compassion to people of all economic 

abilities. Without you it would not be possible for ACV to serve those with financial needs. 

Many lives are enriched each day through this remarkable partnership in ministry. 

Last year, your giving provided:

Each month, an average of 29 People received nutritious 

meals through the Eat Right program. 

Services 

Assisted

Membership 

Discount 

ACV paid more than $12,000 every month toward a grant that 

provides Home Care, Housekeeping, Medical Transportation 

and Meals to many ACV members. Without these vital services, 

many of these individuals could not live independently. 

An average of 7 People each month received help with the 

cost of Assisted Living. Without this help, they could not 

live at Dacier Manor and would either be at risk in their 

own home or be admitted to nursing home care. 

On average, 51 People per month were assisted with 

access to all the benefits of ACV’s membership. 

Minister’s 

Discount 

An average of 40 People per month received discounts at 

Advent Christian Village based on their many years of 

service to the Advent Christian denomination. 

Counseling 

Services 

$3,225 in assistance was provided toward counseling 

individuals who could not have paid the full cost of this 

vital service.

Camp 

18 High Schoolers received this specialized training in 2016 

toward becoming effective and ethical leaders. 

In 2016, 21 Children being raised in foster care were able 

to attend these meaningful weekends that are customdesigned 

for them.
