DEVONSHIRE HOME Building Peace of Mind A conversation with Susan Folwell of Devon based design studio Artisans and Artists Complete renovation and furnishing of a romantic medieval manor house What are the main activities of Artisans and Artists? "We work with private clients to build, develop or enhance their homes." "Our multi-disciplinary design studio provides clients, locally, nationally and internationally, with a bespoke design, build, renovate and furnish service. We are increasingly involved from the design and planning stage right through to final install of furnishings and offer a complete package for clients, including project management and project accounting, this is especially helpful for clients embarking on significant projects. We can be working on a ground-up design and build for a new home through to the extension, refurbishment or make-over of an existing home, the interiors of a suite of rooms or the renovation of a particular room. We also have a retail showroom in Devon where we offer customers a globally sourced premium range of interiors furnishings, fabric, wallpaper, paint, lighting, art and antiques." How would you describe the Artisans and Artists design style? "Diverse, really diverse." "Clients design requirements range from purist traditional, or traditional with a twist, through to "let's break the rules" design wise and do something rather different. We can be specifying how to resolve problems with a historic Listed building, or researching the history of a particular period property and historic furnishings in 54 Countryside, History, Walks, the Arts, Events & all things Devon at: DEVONSHIRE

A Venetian blue ceiling, cool blue angel and Fortuny lighting add drama the morning and designing a rough-luxe meets rock star's lair style space in the afternoon. We thrive on the variety. Our design influences are global as well as local so, when appropriate, we introduce design elements from other cultures into our work. Whether traditional or contemporary, there is always an element of difference in our work, we do not do "ordinary", there is always some element of surprise, perhaps an unusual use of colour or mix of styles, maybe a touch of irreverence or drama and hopefully a bit of magic. The resulting design on any project is driven by the spirit of the client and the property." When a client comes to you for a complete design and build project what are the main advantages for the client? "Reducing risk and gaining peace of mind." "One of the most appreciated elements of the service that we offer clients is the ability to present to them their project designs in 3D. This enables the client to truly understand the final result and is particularly important when dealing with complete house design and build. Not every client can truly read architects plans and indeed why should they. A computer generated 3D representation of their home enables good decisions to be made about space usage and planning right from the start. We recently produced a computer generated 3D video presentation for a client of their 7 bedroom, 7 bathroom new build project, it enabled them to truly understand how the space will flow and important design decisions were made with complete confidence. When appropriate to do so we will utilise 3D presentation of design schemes for individual rooms, this is particularly helpful to clients for kitchen and bathroom projects. The ability to source and procure materials, furnishings and fittings of the right quality at the right price is also paramount to client peace of mind. We have spent years building the right team, finding the very best people. Our tried and trusted builders, trades, professionals and crafts people, combined with in-house experienced design, project management and project accounting, complete the package designed to make for a stress-free experience for clients." Global design influences in a Mallorcan project Turning to interior design - do you foresee any particular trends? "We do try to avoid trendy as passé tends to follow swiftly on the heels of trendy." "The home as refuge and sanctuary has always been important to us all but never more so than in our troubled world right now, so we are seeing a greater appreciation of comfort, not just style. People are increasingly design aware and with even just a little encouragement can be braver and more individual in their interior design choices - for designers this is a good thing as we all love to work with brave and adventurous clients." What is the worst part of the job? "Muddy site visits at early building stage on cold, wet mornings!" And the best? "Happy clients." "It sounds like a cliché but happy clients make it all worthwhile, especially if you have encouraged a client to be braver design wise than they might have been on their own. One client recently sent us a case of champagne and a wonderful thank you letter for completing the restoration of their romantic medieval manor house. Just before the end of 2016 we completed a couple of projects for clients and each took pen to paper to thank us and that really does makes it all worthwhile." 01364 653276 55
