CONNECT. I SS U E 2 2 0 1 6 RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE IS HURTING NORTH EAST SHADOW TRANSPORT SECRETARY ANDY MCDONALD MP RECENTLY VISITED AV DAWSON TO HEAR OF THE CURRENT CHALLENGES FACING THE REGION’S RAIL FREIGHT INDUSTRY. “WE WORK CLOSELY WITH OUR CUSTOMERS TO MAKE THEIR LOGISTICS AS EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE; SHORTENING LEAD TIMES AND MAXIMISING ON CAPACITIES” Gary Dawson, AV Dawson managing director told the Middlesbrough MP of his concerns over the rail infrastructure issues that are affecting the region’s competitiveness. He said: “The lack of a direct North East to West rail route across the UK is having a major impact on North East business. With rail infrastructure as it is, some of our customers have to resort to protracted rail routes; channeling freight down South to get it up to the North West – while this can still be more cost effective and environmentally efficient than road haulage it’s far from being ideal. “The biggest issue is the clearance on tunnels, bridges and platforms, which isn’t sufficient for today’s high-cube freight containers. The route therefore needs significant investment to resolve this. “At AV Dawson, we work closely with our customers to make their logistics as efficient as possible; shortening lead times and maximising on capacities is key to increasing productivity and delivering savings to our clients. We’re therefore keen to add our support to address this issue.” Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald, Shadow Secretary of State for Transport and previously Shadow Rail Minister commented: “There is still not enough focus on freight within transport infrastructure, particularly rail freight. Businesses like AV Dawson are doing a fantastic job for our region and Governments over many decades haven't given rail freight the attention it deserves. More needs to be done and that lack of sufficient focus on rail freight has to be remedied immediately. “It’s great to have businesses like this in our region. AV Dawson has a really impressive operation, particularly its automotive distribution centre, which includes a rail-link directly into its automotive steel store from the East Coast Mainline, and is llustrative of the importance of making rail as streamlined as possible.” 04

Safety Integrity Family Resourceful GIANT 287-TONNE SUBSTATION EXPORTED FROM NORTH SEA SUPPLY BASE THE TRANSPORTATION AND EXPORT OF A REFINERY SUBSTATION BUILT AT AV DAWSON’S NORTH SEA SUPPLY BASE MARKS THE SITE’S BIGGEST LIFT OF THE YEAR. The 287-tonne module, which is larger than a tennis court and measures 37 metres in length, nine metres wide and six metres in height, was constructed by Mech-tool Engineering at AV Dawson’s freight handling facility. The unit was transported as one piece from AV Dawson’s specialist fabrication halls and onto its River Tees quay before being loaded into a ship destined for Central Asia. The innovative transportation & shipping operation was managed by freight forwarder FH Bertling, which is also a tenant on AV Dawson’s site. The project included 60 axle, selfpropelled modular transporters to manoeuvre the unit to the quay. Specialist lifting gear, designed and procured by FH Bertling, loaded the cargo with a single crane into a Russian Sea-River vessel for onward shipment via the Russian inland waterway system to the Caspian Sea. AV Dawson provided port services; including rigging and stevedoring support and its in house onsite ships agency Cockfield Knight supported with getting the ship in and out of the port. Mike Hetherington, technical director at FH Bertling Logistics Aberdeen Ltd said: “There are so many people from so many organisations involved in the logistics of a load-out of this size, but the co-ordination between teams was impressive and ensured we were able to complete the operation safely and efficiently.” The cargo marks the first of a series of major new contracts secured by Mech-tool. Steve Oliver, business development director for Mech-tool’s modular division said: “Business is looking strong for the future – we have a programme of planned construction projects up to at least 2020 which will all be completed at AV Dawson’s fabrication halls. From a tonnage perspective, they’ll be getting bigger too.” 287 TONNE LIFT ACHIEVED Keep up to date with our latest news on our... W 05
