The exhibition was opened together with the Film Festival. “Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes,” said the computer scientist and ACM Turing Award recipient Edsger Dijkstra. The quote was stamped as the motto of the exhibition Abenteuer Informatik (Adventures in Computer Science) that was shown in the Karlstorbahnhof in Heidelberg. Therefore, the visitors did not encounter computer programs or applications, instead simple experiments with many “Aha” moments that provided a lot of fun. Exciting puzzles made it clear how computer scientists approach problem solving. Binary magic, weight sorting, traveling salesmans solutions, monkey puzzles and treasure hunts were all constructed in a way that visitors could playfully dive into the groundworks of computer science. At several experiment stations visitors could touch computer science in the truest sense of the word. “You will quickly realize that though the computer is indeed an important tool for computer scientists, computer science revolves around people, not computers,” said Jens Gallenbacher, Professor of Computer Science at the Technical University (TU) in Darmstadt, who designed the exceptional exhibition together with the didactic department of the TU. 106
