Mummy
Myths!
Should I only use non-bio detergents on baby clothes? NO!
This popular misconception was tackled by researchers in 2008,
but how many mums are aware of the facts...?
BIO VERSUS NON-BIO:
The difference between bio (biological) and non-bio detergents is that bio detergents contain
enzymes that are extremely effective at cleaning stains. Enzymes are biological proteins which
break down other proteins, starches, and fats that are common in everyday stains.
4
To advertise contact us on 01706 353 729 or email sales@adwiselocal.co.uk

The enzymes used in detergents are able work at
lower temperatures, so bio detergents perform
better at lower temperatures (30 to 50°C) than
non-bio detergents. If you prefer to use the quick
wash cycle on your machine or set it to lower
temperatures, then bio detergents will be a better
choice for you. Non-bio detergents don’t contain
enzymes, so you will need to wash your clothes
at higher temperatures. This obviously consumes
more energy and is therefore more expensive.
THE MYTH:
It is generally accepted in this country that the
biological agents in detergent that combat dirt and
stains can irritate skin and aggravate eczema. We
know that baby skin is sensitive, and we want to
do all we can to avoid their discomfort, so you’d
be forgiven for thinking that using bio detergent
on baby clothes is a big no no. As parents, we
get bombarded by well-meaning advice all the
time, on everything from wiping to weaning, but
where did this belief about bio detergents come
from? Is it backed up by facts? The wariness of
enzymes in detergents is thought to have started
after workers manufacturing detergent enzymes
suffered skin reactions, so are required to work
with strict exposure control measures. It could
have also come about from a time before modern
washing machines, when clothes harboured
much more residues from powders which caused
irritation. The idea is also reinforced when you
walk down a supermarket aisle and see this obvious
split between the two types, bio and non-bio, and
the non-bio is marketed as ‘without enzymes for
delicate skin’.
THE REALITY:
In 2008 scientists reviewed the scientific literature,
considering the skin reactions following both
normal and extreme exposures to the biological
agents in detergents. They discovered that the
enzyme raw materials do not pose a risk of irritant
or allergic skin reaction. The researchers' findings
appear in the British Journal of Dermatology
in a paper called ‘Enzymes, detergents and
skin: facts and fantasies’. The lead author of
the paper, Dr David Basketter, concludes that
"Investigations of numerous individuals with
skin complaints attributed to laundry products
demonstrate convincingly that enzymes were not
responsible." He then goes on to relegate this long
held belief to the realms of mythology "Indeed,
enzyme-containing laundry products have an
extensive history of safe use. Thus, the supposed
adverse effects of enzymes on skin seem to be a
consequence of mythology."
Curiously, dividing our detergents into ‘bio’ and
‘non-bio’ seems to be a British oddity. No other
country separates their detergents like this and in
many countries, you can’t even get hold of ‘nonbio’.
It therefore seems that our irrational belief
about enzymes have turned into lucrative products
for consumer goods companies. Even our NHS
succumbed to this belief it until it was challenged.
For decades, the NHS recommended washing
baby clothes with non-bio detergent until a group
of volunteer mums from a project for reusable
nappies pressured the NHS to explain their stance.
Following an investigation, they realised that
the advice was based on no evidence at all and
seems to have been left over from a pamphlet for
expectant mothers from the previous Department
of Health. What the NHS website now says is that
“There's no evidence that using washing powders
with enzymes (bio powders) or fabric conditioners
will irritate your baby's skin.”
Of course, washing powders and liquids can cause
skin problems in some people, but the causes of
the problem are likely to be due to the perfumes
they contain, which are found in both bio and
non-bio detergents. It seems to me that given bio
washing powders are far superior at getting stains
out than non-bio they are the preferred option
when you’re washing poo and sick out of clothes
on a daily basis, as in my family at least...!
“HI HO HI HO
it's off to work we go”
What momentous happenings occurred forty years ago?
Spain and Portugal joined the EEC. The
M25 circling London was completed. UK
and France announced plans to construct
the Channel tunnel. Halley’s Comet reached
its closest point to Earth during its second
visit to the solar system in the 20th
Century. Interest rates at the year end were
10.88% and a gallon (4.54 litres) of petrol
was £1.89p. and Village pantomimes began
in St Gabriel’s Primary School on Vicarage
Road South. in Castleton
Right what Pantomime is being performed
this year and when? Answer Snow White and
the Seven Dwarfs beginning on Wednesday
22 February for four nights at 7-15pm plus a
Saturday matinee at 2-15pm So its “Hi Ho Hi
Ho it's off to work we go”
FOR TICKETS CALL TOMMY ON 01706 353184
OR JOANNE 07759006599
“ So now prepare for Joy sublime in
the wonderland of Pantomime “
With the formation of the PTA an ambitious plan was
to stage a pantomime in the then relatively new school
hall. There was no proper stage or stage lighting just a
small raised area that could be adapted. “Aladdin” was
chosen to be the first production, and with portable
staging blocks loaned from Bishop Henshaw High
School ( now St Cuthbert’s), make shift scenery and
lighting plus colourful costumes sewn together by
Ladies of the parish,. A cast of principals with choruses
of children numbering just forty four, and just a piano, a
“wonderful tradition” began.
Aladdin made just over ninety pounds profit for the
school PTA.which proved Pantomime was a financial
viability. The following year the cast numbers increase
to eighty eight, and the year after over one hundred.
Any child from Junior One, up to those in the Senior
High school could be in the Panto. No special dancing
or singing talents were needed to take part, just
enthusiasm, and this is still the case forty years on.
Over the years a special purpose collapsible stage was
designed and built, proper stage lighting installed,
brilliant scenery painted by the late Jack Sheerin
making the presentation and production full of colour
which is what pantomime is all about. Even when major
alteration to the school building took place a few years
ago did not prevent the tradition carrying on. The
Panto temporarily moved out of the Village down the
road to Cardinal Langley High School returning when
the building work was completed. The stage had to
be repositioned after the alterations and this was duly
done to enable the show to come back home.
What benefits can the pantomime claim over all
these years? Children love to perform in front of an
audience, and the Panto gives them the opportunity.
It also helps their self confidence, and it teaches them
that team work is a good thing. Lasting friendships
have been made and many happy memories that will
never be forgotten. These special qualities bring about
community cohesion which is vitally important for our
well being especially in a small village like Castleton.
WHY DESIGN WORKS
The Design Council’s research has shown that
businesses that choose to add value through
design see a greater impact on business
performance than businesses that don’t.
Design isn’t just something that’s nice to have: it can
directly improve sales, turnover, profit and overall growth.
Design is a key communication tool: it helps you
get across to your customers, and potential
customers, exactly what you can do for them.
Your brand will help you build the kind
of trust that draws customers in,
and keeps them.
SPOTLIGHT ON AARON THE LOCAL HEAD CHEF AT
CENETTA
Castleton Eye love telling local stories about
local people so we went to visit Aaron at
Cenetta to find out more about his new role
and Cenetta...
Cenetta previously Fallen Angels have recently
undergone a refurbishment with a new style of family
friendly modern dining and a more modern up-to date
menu including promoting Aaron to new head chef in
the house!
How did you become a chef?
I started working here at Cenetta as a pot washer in
2004! I was still at school but soon became part of the
preparation team. I always showed initiative and was
keen to help the chef. I was eager to learn and so went
to college to get my qualifications whilst still working
here. Working my way up to second in charge. Its been
twelve years and I love working here, I am grateful for
this opportunity and couldn’t have done it without the
staff here.
Who inspires you in your role?
We had a second head chef before, his name was
Manuel. He was so organised, I loved this about him.
He was never stressed and made us all feel relaxed.
What is your signature dish?
Ahhh this is hard. Italian food, or a full English I love
hash browns. When I am not cooking I love fish from
the chippy.
What is your favourite meal to cook on your menu?
I love to cook Sea-bass this is my favourite.
What is the most popular dish on your menu?
The most popular dish on our menu is still steak
and chips, this has been on the menu since the very
beginning. I believe this is down to the quality of our
beef. We source our meat from our own butchers in
Castleton.
The new menu and décor really needs to be seen, so
why not treat yourself to a wonderful night out situated
right here in Castleton Village.
They also have pizza building for kids!
GRILLED SALMON
TAGLIATELLE
INGREDIENTS PER PERSON
1 fillet of fresh salmon
50g smoked salmon
4 spears of asparagus
50g samphire (optional)
small handful of frozen peas
1 portion of tagliatelle pasta
3 tablespoons of double cream
Salt & pepper
TOP TIP – your pasta water should be as salty
as the sea. Never thrown all of it away when you
drain your pasts. Always add a tablespoon or so
into your sauce.
METHOD
Put the tagliatelle in boiling salted water for
approximately 6 minutes if dried, or 3 minutes if
using fresh.
Season your salmon fillet and place under a hot
grill for 6 minutes turning after 3.
Tear the smoked salmon into small pieces and
place in a pan with the cream and warm gently.
Chop the asparagus spears and boil with the peas
and samphire until the asparagus is tender, 3-4
minutes. Drain and add to the smoked salmon and
cream.
Drain the pasta and add to the sauce, stir, and
season to taste.
Serve the pasta in a bowl topped with the grilled
salmon fillet.
your local convenience store
Peter, one of the new owners at your local
Nisa store (formally kwiksave) served in the
Armed Forces for 7 years and very recently
entered into business with my brother-in-law
Rada and some very close family friends who
have been in the convenience store sector for
over 20 years.
When we initially decided to buy the store we
did some background work on the area its
self and we fell in love with Castleton and all
it had to offer, I must say in our short space of
time here we have been overwhelmed with
kindness from the local community who
have been nothing short of perfect in
welcoming us.
We operate 12 other stores across the south
Manchester area and we have been pleasantly
surprised with our first venture into Rochdale.
The shop its self will see a transformation over
time with panning permission accepted to
extend the store and make it bigger,
this should happen hopefully in around
6 to 7 months.
We are currently recruiting for new staff and wish to employ only local people. Anybody
interested should drop a CV in store. We would also welcome any suggestions as to which
local charity to support, being part of the Nisa family does allow us to spend money on local
projects etc. and it would be brilliant to hear any suggestions from the community.
WHAT AN
ACHIEVEMENT!
Smith’s
Bakers & Confectioners Ltd
We pride ourselves in offering
a first class service and product.
Three generations of family dreams have contributed
to Smiths success. It was in 1928 when William
and Mary Smith bought the business for their four
children, wanting a better future away from the
Cotton Mills.
Believing in keeping the business within the family
one of their other family members a butcher supplied
the local fresh meat for all the pies and sandwiches
produced in Smith's Bakery.
The bakery has survived the second world war, food
rationing, and now competition from larger chains and
supermarkets, it has proved how important it is to keep
with traditional roots and the quality they offer.
Today third generation brothers Stephen and Chris
continually add new lines to meet our customer
requirements and demands. Smith's continue doing
an amazing job, providing good quality traditional
recipes to the local communities of Castleton and
surrounding areas.
You can find Smiths bakeries on 872 and 764
Manchester Road Castleton and 36 Manchester
Road Heywood.
(extract taken from the book Rochdale the Golden Years)
Traditionally handmade delicious homebaked
bread, pies and confectionery
cakes for most occasions.
We pride ourselves in fresh homemade
produce of a high class and baked
to an exacting standard.
Everything that leaves our bakery has had
pride kneaded into it, and has been made
and baked with care and attention.
GREEN
OPEN
SPACES
UNDER
THREAT
By Councillor Billy Sheerin
The Greater Manchester Spatial
framework proposal had only
been made known to local
councillors for a few months
This was only relating to the plan, and
not the actual proposed designated
sites, which our three ward councillors
first saw in detail in a drop in session in
Number One Riverside on
Monday 5th Dec at 5.00pm.
It was Jaw dropping for all of our
ward Councillors seeing just how
much land in our village had been
put in the draft proposal.
The actual process has been going on
for most of this year with landowners
all over Greater Manchester being
invited to offer their land for
development even if it was protected
by green belt legislation.
This has happened with the land behind my house
( Leander Drive) which was farmland owned by the
Brown family who have been trying for many years to
get it allocated for residential/industrial use. It has, I
believe been sold to either an investor or developer
and is now included in the draft proposal.
There is a large outcry at the vast scale of the
proposal which will affect many, especially with green
belt allocation. Brownfield sites are also included but
these don't attract developers like an un-spoilt green
piece of land and the sad truth is that the government
is using the argument of the lack of house building all
over the UK to be an excuse to allow building on our
precious open spaces.
There is an argument that Rochdale currently has
over 65% of its borough as green belt land and the
proposed allocation will reduce this to around 50%
which is still far more than any other local authority in
Greater Manchester. However this statistic is irrelevant
if it impacts directly on you and your neighbours .
It is still a draft and comments that have lodged
regarding the first stage on GM Spatial framework
website (which closed at midnight on the 16 January)
are currently being analysed.
The second stage of consultation on expected
modifications to the plan will be in late spring and
this will allow another raft of objections to be made.
The Plan is to satisfy land supply for growth regarding
Housing, Industry, and recreational open space, until
the year 2035.
If you want to be involved in the consultation process
regarding the land that is under threat around
Castleton there is still time – Using the reference
28.3.4 NG2 land east and west of the A627M
(Oldham & Rochdale ) send an email to GMSF@
agma.gov.uk or register on line via the Greater
Manchester Spatial framework Portal consultation
and this will let you submit comments You will then
also receive updates on all what is happening in
the process first hand. Please mention the lack of
infrastructure if you do use the consultation process
it’s the strongest argument against the plan at present
Please note, as your Ward Councillor and local
resident I am closely monitoring what is happening
and will ensure that I keep all property owners on
Leander Drive fully informed of any developments.
