Celebrating our Silver Jubilee COMMUNITY 11, TEMA History of Immanuel Society 26 IMMANUEL S O C I E T Y

Celebrating our Silver Jubilee BRIEF HISTORY OF IMMANUEL METHODIST CHURCH The need to found and build a Methodist Church for Community 11, Tema and its environs was mooted as far back as 1977 when Rev. Samuel K. Hodasi was the Superintendent Minister of The Methodist Church, Tema. For this purpose, St. Paul Methodist Society acquired a piece of land in Community 11. At that time it was considered more expedient for the future growth of the church to develop the land into the present Methodist Day Secondary School (MEDASS) instead of a church building. Ten years elapsed before the initial effort was made in 1986 to open a society in Community 11, Tema. In pursuance of this, the then Superintendent Minister, Rev. William Robert Abeeku Blankson had a Bible class Meeting started with members of St. Paul Methodist Church resident in Community 11. The Class Meeting was held in the residence of Bros. Cdr(Rtd ) E. Oko Arthur, now Reverend Minister under, the Leadership of Bro. Ekow Sey assisted byCdr. (Rtd) E. O. Arthur and Bro. E.K. Haizel. There was at that same time another Bible Class of Bethel Methodist Church also made up of members resident in Community 11 meeting in the residence of the late Bro. Kwame Boakye who was their leader and assisted by Bro. John Mbroh. When the Methodist Day Secondary School’s(MEDASS) classrooms became available, the Sey-Arthur-Haizel class moved into one of the classrooms in November 1987, followed by the Boakye-Mbroh class a few months later. With the two classes meeting at the same venue, they decided that they met together on the first Sunday of every month for joint class meeting. Older than these two classes was another class then in existence at the residence of one of the leaders of Bethel Methodist Society, the late Paa G.K.B. de Graft Johnson in Community 10. This class was started In the early 1980’s for some members of both St. Paul’s and Bethel who were residents in Communities 10 and 11. For convenience and closer fellowship, other members of St. Paul’s and Bethel resident in the neighborhood joined Paa de Graft Johnson’s Bible Class for Sunday Evening Services. However, with the death of Paa de Graft Johnson, the Sunday Evening Services at his house joined the Sunday Evening Services at the Methodist Day Secondary School (MEDASS), which had then started.
