FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Your first step in regards to financial aid should be the FAFSA. It will assist you in obtaining financial aid, such as grants, loans and your eligibility for work-study. States and schools may also use your FAFSA information for non-federal aid. In order to complete your FAFSA on the web there are a few steps to follow: 1. Get a social security number Without it your application will not be processed. 2. Request a PIN To complete a FAFSA online you can request a PIN from the U.S. Department on Education. The PIN allows you to apply and “sign” the FAFSA online, check the status, and make corrections. 3. Make note of state and college deadlines and requirements College and state deadlines are usually earlier than the federal deadlines and sometimes they require additional applications. 4. Use the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet This will assist you in what information you will need to complete the actual FAFSA. Worksheets are obtainable from a high school guidance office, a public library, or on 5. Complete the FAFSA It can be completed on the web and should be as soon as possible after January 1. The money is awarded on a first-come, first served basis. Information need to complete the FAFSA Student Information Marital status Citizenship and state residency Education history Major course of study Expected course workload (part-time or full-time) Interest in student loans and work-study Income taxes and deductions (including spouses) Spouse’s income Assets Dependency status Household List of schools of interest Parent Information Level of education Income taxes and deductions Household assets Family members State residency Age *IMPORTANT NOTE: You will never have to pay to apply to a scholarship, FAFSA, or any other financial aid source.
