Karen Polak Teaching about the Genocide of the Roma

Summary During Holocaust Education Week in Toronto, 2012, two programmes were dedicated to the genocide of the Roma. This article reflects on these events and looks at the experiences with diverse groups of learners and educators in workshops held in Europe since 2013. These workshops revolved around online teaching materials, The Fate of the European Roma and Sinti during the Holocaust, compiled by an international team of historians and educators. The implementation of these teaching materials is an ongoing process. Exploring the differences in how they are used and received in various settings provides insight into both the opportunities and the challenges the educational community faces in bringing the history of this “forgotten” genocide into the mainstream. The significance of this history for society today and the urgent need for work on this topic are highlighted by some of the experiences of educators and responses from learners. 37 HOLOCAUST EDUCATION IN PEDAGOGY, HISTORY, AND PRACTICE
