Legionella
Legionella bacteria are naturally occuring and can
be found in environmental water sources such as
rivers and lakes. The bacteria can survive under
a range of tempartures, typically between 20°C
and 45°C and often where there is an abundant
food source or slow moving water. Below 20°C,
the bacteria are dormant but still able to multiply
when water temperatures increase. Thermal
inactivation of Legionella bacteria starts in water of
approximately 50°C. Water temperatures of over
60°C are effective in destroying Legionella in a short
period of time.
To date there are at least 40 different forms of
Legionella which have been identified. The strain of
Legionella called Legionella Pneumophila accounts
for 90% of all cases of Legionella infections and is
the main cause of Legionnaires Disease.
What does it mean for me?
Here at King's, we perform a rigorous and
compehensive monitoring and testing regime to
make sure that the hot water is above 50°C and that
the cold water is below 20°C. We check every tap at
least once a year.
We also monitor usage of water taps in the building
to make sure all taps are used at least once a
week. If taps are not in weekly use, our engineers
will visit the tap to run the water. We will also take
temperatures at this time.
What can I do?
If you are aware of any taps in your working area
which are not used, please report these to us via
the Estates & Facilities Service Desk so that we can
add them to our register.
Porters
The King's porter service is available to transfer goods
between rooms and buildings.
Items such as archive boxes can be picked
up and delivered to post rooms by porters.
Porters are also available to move furniture
around or set up rooms for teaching or
events.
The porter service is also available for the
completion of small internal office moves
within the same building.
