How long have you been doing gymnastics, and how did you get started? [I’ve been doing gymnastics] since I was 3 years old. My mom was a gymnast and so was my grandma, so naturally my mom just put me in gymnastics. Did your mother and grandmother influence you? They really pushed me into gymnastics, because they were kind of like my role models, and I wanted to be like them. I focused on my gymnastics so I could do well, so I could live up to how well they did. [My mom] knows all the skills and all the events, so I can talk to her about my gymnastics. What did you do before joining the Lincoln-Way co-op? I did club gymnastics, so it was really intense. I just wanted a change and wanted to be with some friends, so I joined the high school team. What has been your biggest accomplishment this season? My biggest probably winning floor at regionals. It was really a confidence booster for me, and I just felt more confident going into sectionals, now that I won floor. What have you learned from your teammates or your coach? That really, if you put your mind to anything, you can accomplish it. You start off doing a skill and it’s really hard. But your teammates and your coaches encourage you, and you can get those skills you’ve been working for your whole gymnastics career. What are your plans for after high school? I am most likely going to focus on my education. I have been focused on gymnastics my whole life, and I just want to focus on my academic career now. I want to do something with math, because it’s my favorite subject, but I don’t know exactly what job yet. How do you stay calm and focused at meets? Before a meet, I listen to normal music and get in the zone. I make sure my whole team is encouraging me the whole time. That’s how I do well: I just focus with my team. Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media What is one memorable moment that occurred outside of a meet this year? We’ve had a lot of pasta parties. It’s a lot of fun because we all hang out and play fun games. The pasta parties are definitely my favorite because we all have a fun time and we don’t have to thing about gymnastics for a bit. Who is your favorite athlete? Aly Raisman is my favorite athlete because she’s been to the Olympics twice, and her gymnastics really inspires me. It was awesome [watching her at the Olympics] because she went the first time, and her second time was even better. I just felt she worked so hard to get there, and she just encouraged me to do better. What is your favorite TV show? “Pretty Little Liars.” Interview by Kirsten Onsgard, Editor.
