Faulkner’s junior teammate,
Rohrer, just missed
securing the fifth spot in
all-around—her sixth-place
score of 36.2 was only .2
shy of Shanahan’s score.
GBS junior Bebe Haramaras
came in seventh in the
event (35.975), followed by
New Trier freshman Maeve
Murdock (35.975).
Rohrer was second in
parallel bars (9.35) and tied
for fifth in the vault (9.35)
while Murdock was fourth
in the balance beam (9.375).
Although Glenbrook
North won’t be represented
in the state tournament,
the injury-plagued
Spartans had a successful
season, finishing second
in the regional at GBS and
also at the Central Suburban
League North meet.
“I love my team,” GBN
coach Julie Holmbeck said.
“I cannot say enough about
what exceptional young
ladies they are. They’ve
jelled so well together;
they’re the most close-knit
group I’ve had. I’m disappointed
for (senior) Alex
Michalak. She made it to
state as a sophomore (finishing
20th on the beam).”
Because of a knee injury,
Michalak was sidelined for
segments of the season and
at the sectional she didn’t
compete in the floor exercise
and the vault. Her
vault score of 8.9 tied her
in the beam she finished
19th (8.45).
The best all-around
performer for the Spartans
was junior Kelly Lazar
in 14th place (34.2). Her
best event was the vault,
in which she tied for ninth
(9.3). Fellow junior Brittany
Ulrich was eighth in
the parallel bars (9.025).
Holmbeck also made
a point of praising Katie
Brownlee, who along with
Michalak was one of only
two seniors on the team.
“Katie has a great work
ethic and she always has
a smile on her face,” the
GBN coach said. “She’s a
solid all-arounder and she
did a fine job for us in the
vault this year.”
10 Questions
with Lauren Kaplinsky
The North Shore Country
Day senior is also an
All-ISL soccer player and
tennis player
Do you have any
superstitions before,
after or during a game?
Before a game, I tie my
left shoe before my right
shoe. I always take a
headband from Caroline
Segal. I’ve always tied
my left shoe before my
right shoe, for school,
for soccer games, everything.
The headband thing
started this season and two
of our three losses have
been when I didn’t take a
headband from her.
Is there any music that
pumps you up?
We’ve had the same play
list since my freshman
year. It starts out with rap,
then goes to pop and has
some country towards
the end.
What’s the best
coaching advice you’ve
ever gotten?
To not let my height
(5-foot-2) be the reason I
can’t do something.
If you could travel
to one place, where
would it be?
Fiji. I’ve always wanted
to go to Fiji and sit on
the beach.
If you could have
dinner with three
people who would
they be and why?
Beyonce, Michelle Obama
and Shakira. Beyonce
is awesome, Michelle
Obama is someone I’ve
always looked up to and I
just love Shakira.
When did you start
playing basketball?
I started when I was 8.
My mom put me in an allboys
league and the boys
wouldn’t pass to me so I
hated it. I quit for a couple
years but started again
in sixth grade and liked
it again.
What’s the hardest
part about basketball?
Working well with everybody
on the court, trying
to figure out everybody’s
styles and how to play
with that.
Do you feel soccer or
basketball is harder?
Basketball is harder mentally
and soccer is harder
physically.
What’s the best part
about being a North
Shore Country Day
athlete?
That I can be a three-season
athlete and play club
soccer at the same time.
I play basketball, soccer
and tennis and play for FC
United’s club team.
What’s your favorite
moment as a North
Photo Submitted
Shore Country Day
athlete?
The sectional [semifinal]
game of my sophomore
year for soccer (2015 vs.
St. Edward). We lost but
before the game, everything
that could have gone
wrong went wrong. But
we went to PKs and it was
the best game I’ve played
with my team. I forgot
both my shin guards and
cleats, two players on
our team were coming
late and they got caught
in a traffic jam and one
of them was our goalie
and she showed up 10
minutes into the game, our
center mid was out of the
country doing service and
everything had to shift.
If you were on a
deserted island, what
would you bring and
why?
Food, so I could survive.
Seeds so that I could grow
an apple tree.
