30 | February 16, 2017 | The Northbrook tower sports wrestling From Page 34 suddenly ended it by pinning his Dundee opponent Chase Raap with 59 seconds remaining in the second period. He advanced to the match with Raap (40-8) via a semifinal 8-0 major decision over Jake Leske (33-8) of McHenry after eliminating Huntley’s Justin Henry (22-17) on a fall with 59 seconds elapsed in their quarterfinal match. “It’s something to keep me motivated,” Penick said of his flawless season. In last year’s state tournament, Penick finished sixth. He then went on to compete in track and made it to the sectional. But this year Penick doesn’t plan to join the track team when his wrestling season ends. He wants to use the time to get ready for college football. “Football is my passion, and I love the place (Murray State),” he said. “I’ll go and see what I can do down there.” Penick’s 145-pound junior teammate, Alex Rosenbloom (26-5), finished second in the sectional for the second year in a row, losing a 3-0 decision to Barrington junior Markus Hartman (41-1) in the title match. Rosenbloom, who competed in the 138-pound class last year, fell behind when Hartman got a twopoint takedown at the outset and a second-period ankle sprain hindered his attempt to make a comeback. The Giants’ other sectional representative, 152-pound Steven Weathers (34-4), won his first match on a fall at 1:48 but then was defeated in the quarterfinals by Huntley freshman David Ferrante by 6-5 decision. Ferrante (26-2) went on to win the championship. Weathers went to the consolation bracket where he took a 13-2 major decision before losing a semifinal match by decision. Athlete of the Week 10 Questions with Julia Betman Betman is a senior cheerleader at Glenbrook North. When did you start cheering? Freshman year. I quit gymnastics in eighth grade and I was deciding between trying out for poms or for cheerleading and I went to the open gym and I loved it. I was really excited because I was one of the only people who knew how to tumble and they really needed that for the team. What do you like most about the sport? I love everyone on my team and I also love cheering for the football and basketball games. Competitions are also really fun for me. New Balance North Shore 610 Central Avenue • Port Clinton Square Downtown Highland Park 847-266-8323 • Open 7 Days • What is the best advice you’ve ever received about the sport? To be confident in the air because I am a flyer. If you have confidence that your stunt is going to be hitting then it will. Something most people don’t know about the sport? I feel like everyone just thinks that is just sideline cheers and that it’s not hard but they don’t realize that you have to tumble and jump. They don’t realize how hard stunting is. They like don’t even consider it a sport but they just don’t understand how hard it is. Any pregame rituals or superstitions? I have a pep talk with Hailey Shuman. Who is a hero of yours? My mom. She is a great role model and is always supporting me in cheerleading and outside of cheer. What is an item on your bucket list? Photo Submitted I’d like to visit somewhere else in Europe. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself as a elementary school teacher somewhere in the suburbs and having a family. Advice to someone just starting the sport? I would say to live every moment, every game because sometimes you just want it to be over but now that it’s over I’m really sad and wished I cherished every moment more. What is one thing you can’t live without? My phone, because I like going on social media and texting my friends.
