LEVEL: Medium Crossword by Myles Mellor and Susan Flanagan life & arts the wilmette beacon | February 16, 2017 | 23 Chasing dreams Karabas releases ‘Warehouse Full of Wishes’ ahead of album debut Sarah Haider, Assistant Editor It all started with a name. The song title “Warehouse Full of Wishes” came to Chris Karabas — songwriter, musician and owner of the Rock House — when he was sitting by the fireplace in his writing room last year. The idea sparked a desire to write a country music album based around those four words. “[‘Warehouse Full of Wishes’] reflected who I am and defined who I am as sort of a positive guy with a lot of dreams that I’m still chasing,” he said. Karabas immediately pulled out his guitar to write the wealth of songs inspired by the new title. Unfortunately, nothing came to mind. He sat down with the intention of writing the songs dozens of times, each time feeling the excitement of his newfound title, and each time it seemed the well of inspiration had run dry. The title was not given up on. Instead, Karabas decided to search for inspiration at Music Row in Nashville, where he originally developed his song writing skills after college. In between mixing sessions, Karabas went to a building owned by the Nashville Songwriters Association, of which he is a member, and sat in an open office, where the first single “dropped out of the sky and into his lap” within 20 minutes. He rushed over to his producer, who loved the song, before calling Glen Duncan, a Grammy award winner, and demanding to meet him at the studio with every instrument he had. They spent the rest of the day building tracks and recording songs. They wasted no time showing off their new creation in multiple pitch meetings, where they received immediate positive feedback. The title track, released on Dec. 29, is the first of six songs that will be released every six weeks before being combined to form an EP. This decision stemmed from Karabas’ desire to give his audience a steady drip of content, as well as cater to the modern music world of Spotify and Apple Music. These kind of decisions Chris Karabas, owner of the Rock House in Wilmette, teaches the song “Coming Home” to The Studio Band. PHOTO SUBMITTED have come from the experience Karabas has gained over decades in the industry. “Back in the ’90s I was signed to a record label in Nashville and nothing ever panned out, so I moved back to Chicago and sort of put that career on the back burner,” Karabas said. “And then flash forward all these years later, I went in just to record some stuff for fun and the next thing I know I’m signed by a publishing company and I’m back in the thick of it now.” After moving back to Chicago, he found love, got married, started a family and released an album inspired by having kids. He also played top venues, like the House of Blues, with his former roots rock band — The Lucky Jackson Band.
