Beecham, who has worked part time with the Winnetka Historical Society for the past two years, is excited to be introduced as executive director at the organization’s annual luncheon on Feb. 22. Van Cleave, who will continue to serve as the president of the Winnetka- Northfield Rotary Club, is confident Beecham will lead the society in the right direction. “Tane’s knowledge of the village, dedication and enthusiasm make her a perfect fit for the Winnetka Historical Society,” Van Cleave said. An 18-year resident of Winnetka, Beecham originally became interested in the historical society because of her strong belief in the group’s mission of sharing the rich history of the village with everyone from the oldest residents to the newest families. “I really believe in what the mission of the organization is, which is really to preserve the past and the stories of the past, specifically Winnetka, and really bring that forward to the public,” she said. “We do that through our exhibits, our collections [and] our outreach programs to the public, and I love history, so it made sense.” In her prior role as administrative assistant, Beecham’s tasks included managing the member and donor databases, taking in miscellaneous research requests from the public and working on demolition requests that came through the Village. Now as she prepares to carry out the group’s strong local legacy as executive director, Beecham’s biggest goals are to improve the society’s visibility and relevancy. “We are a very, very small organization and a small museum, so of course we don’t get the sort of foot traffic into the museum that larger museums would get,” Beecham said. “One thing I think is really important is to have a greater outreach to younger families. There’s so many people in our community who really don’t know who we are and what we do. I’d like to work on bringing our exhibits out of the museum — bringing them to the public whether as a traveling exhibit or going to different organizations.” Additionally, Beecham hopes to focus on building the society’s social media presence as well as online exhibits. Overall, Beecham believes being involved in local historical program is important for all area residents because of the lessons that can be learned through discovering the history of why things were done the way they were in town. “I think if you build an interest and respect with younger people for our historic buildings, our historic architecture, our architecturally-significant older homes, they start to understand why we would want these things to remain as opposed to losing everything and then you become a much more contemporary, modern town,” she said. “These younger parents can pass this along to their children. I would love to see greater use of our log house for families also as a way to teach what it was like to live in the 1800s.” Since 1932, the Winnetka Historical Society has worked to educate locals on the stories of Winnetka’s past to “enrich our present and inspire our future.” The group operates two historic buildings open to the public, the Museum and Research Center at 411 Linden St. and the Schmidt Burnham Log House at 1140 Willow Road.
